Gossip Site Suggests Britney Spears’ ‘Revealing Outfit’ Too Sexy for Church — Agree? Plus, What Do You Think About Worship Attire in General?

Is This Britney Spears Outfit too Sexy for Church? Take TheBlaze Poll About Church Clothing

Pop star Britney Spears (left) (Photo Credit: Omg! Yahoo!)

It’s not uncommon for the faithful to debate key elements of the church-going experience. TheBlaze already explored the never-ending battle over the style of music in American churches (while some people like old-school hymns, others prefer contemporary worship music), but what about attire?

Clothing, like music, can be a controversial subject, as some congregations prefer suits and ties for pastors and parishioners, alike, while others would rather see more comfortable outfits — jeans, t-shirts and even sweatshirts. The argument that those in the former category pose is that people should look their best to honor the God they are worshipping. Those in the latter group contend that clothing is merely anΒ outerΒ fixture — one that has little to nothing to do with praise and salvation.

Of course, the debate is more detailed β€” and that’s especially true for women. For example, it’s more than just formal versus informal: women are also constantly the center of debates about skirt length and shirt tightness when in the pews.

And it seems the controversy extends beyond the church community. On Tuesday, Yahoo’s celebrity gossip site omg! published a piece detailing Britney Spears’ outfit choice for a Sunday church visit. Under a headline that reads, “Britney Spears Wore–What?!–to Church?,” omg! wonders if the popular pop singer, 31, and her attire were too racy for a church service at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village, Calif. (You can see her clothing in the above image.)

The outletΒ describesΒ her “revealing outfit” as consisting of “a super-short skirt and sky-high heels.” Rather than being suited for church, the ensamble, according to omg!, is more tailored to “a night on the town.” Watch the video reportΒ describingΒ the outfit, below:

While you may care little about Spears, the real issue here is church attire. Based on what you saw in the clip, was the pop singer’s outfit appropriate for church — or something that women simply shouldn’t be wearing inside of a house of worship? Or, was it fine and nothing out of the ordinary? Also, what are your overall views about the types of clothes that should be worn in church? Do you support formal or informal wear?

Take our multi-question poll, below, and let us know:

    I’ve always had the opinion that God doesn’t care what you wear, he’s just glad you’re there. But I don’t think it’s acceptable to continuously dress like a prostitute during a service…

      Well, if she dresses like a prostitute you may have a point. Currently, that photo is rather pedestrian and normal by most standards.

    My son 22 year-old-son came to my church, struggling…He had a lollipop in his mouth when an usher in black held his hand out and made him spit it into his hand. If church is for the self-righteous, we need another venue where Jesus can reach Brittany, and let the Holy Spirit train her in attire. There has to be a place where the naked can be clothed without spite and disdain.

      A lollipop or a nook in the mouth of an adult gives me RAS/PC of drug abuse and a crime in progress. Mouth toys are sly bite protectors for ‘Ecstasy’, MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine), yhe top side-effects reported are difficulty concentrating, jaw clenching, and grinding of the teeth.

    I think when the bible talks about modesty it’s so that we’re not a distraction in a house of worship. I had a friend that walked in with a long black duster coat and black cowboy hat which he didn’t remove. He was a distraction. It’s great that she was in church but she brought a lot attention to herself or this aritcle wouldn’t have been written so I’m not sure of her motives. She should’ve known better. sometimes you gotta draw the line.

      So you don’t go to a Christian church then?

      Christ went to the whores, money lenders and tax collectors as they existed, and preached to them and changed their hearts. If he’d have restrained his teaching to the well dressed folks outside of those areas his message would not have been quite so…universal.

      So her skirt is just a bit short, and not even much at that. And you’d tell her you wouldn’t welcome her to accept Christ’s message? Man, who knew that clothes were more important than the heart to the Lord?

    Scripture says:
    (1) Do all things in moderation;
    (2) Be careful your actions are not a stumbling block to the faith of others;
    (3) Do everything to or for the glory of God.
    How does the way we dress reflect these things?

    I think Christians (and I can say this because I am one) have a tendency to over focus on self inflicted rules rather than on what Christ truly taught. Modesty is important; it should be something that we practice EVERY day of the week, not just Sundays. Perhaps if Brittney goes to that church for a while and develops a relationship with people there, someone can lovingly and gently talk with her about that. I think it’s more important to have people come to church than to have them look and dress exactly how you would like them too.
    As far as dressing up for church or not, that’s entirely up to you. God doesn’t care if you are wearing a three piece suit or jeans and a tshirt. In Biblical times, most people didn’t even own multiple pairs of clothes, so that’s just a rule Christians have set for themselves. If you choose to dress up for church as a sign of respect, by all means! But don’t look down on someone if they don’t dress how you’d like them to.

    I can’t say that I like what shes wearing. But I would be happy to see her walk through the doors of my church. That would mean she feels comfortable and would not be judged as a celebrity but seen as someone coming to worship God. Church isn’t for the perfect. He has already been here and he says love everyone. And little by little help them understand what is appropriate not just for church but for life.

      No, not really, where would you get that? Her evil mother foisted her off onto Hollywood to raise, but that never killed the small flame of humanity she has in her. It did destroy her younger daughter, but Britney seems to be coming back to normalcy. Hey, she’s attending church and not advertising it (though the paparazzi are, clearly), that has to count for something.

      You speak as if people can only entertain one thought at a time. Why do you hold that opinion about all people, Sensei? Since you assume it about the Right, you clearly hold it for the Left, otherwise there would be no criticism to offer. What a low view you hold of your fellow human beings.

    My congregation is one is change; mostly older folks -WWII generation- with a small but growing number of 30-somethings starting to join. This has been an issue for us pretty much since we started a contemporary service after the traditional worship experience; traditional ways of thinking are hard to break. But sometimes, we need to do just that.

    So long as someone’s attire is respectful of others around them, then three piece suit or track suit doesn’t matter. What matters is that we don’t dress in a manner than could become a stumbling block to others. I’ve had to speak to more than one teenage girl -and her parents- when she decided to come to church in shorts that left precious little to the imagination.

    Looking at Ms. Spears’ outfit -assuming it’s what she wore to church- it’s actually pretty tame; a little short maybe, but not scandalous. However, she should ask herself why so short a skirt and if she’s comfortable with the attention it will bring and with the distraction it may cause.

    Britney is dressed in a manner that is no different then the way most women dress when they go to church.
    Whoever has a problem with her needs to take a good look at themselves first. Jesus did not come to call the (so called ) righteous but sinnersw to repentance.
    Once a person’s heart has been changed it will be the Spirit that addresses such matters and not hypocrites. The modern American church is akin to business corporations that are run by a few select people who think that Christianity is their own private enterprise.
    The worldly church that exists today is known in the scriptures as Babylon the religious whore, full of hypocrites and self called men and women who scatter, not gather the flock.
