Gossip Site Suggests Britney Spears’ ‘Revealing Outfit’ Too Sexy for Church — Agree? Plus, What Do You Think About Worship Attire in General?

Pop star Britney Spears (left) (Photo Credit: Omg! Yahoo!)
It’s not uncommon for the faithful to debate key elements of the church-going experience. TheBlaze already explored the never-ending battle over the style of music in American churches (while some people like old-school hymns, others prefer contemporary worship music), but what about attire?
Clothing, like music, can be a controversial subject, as some congregations prefer suits and ties for pastors and parishioners, alike, while others would rather see more comfortable outfits — jeans, t-shirts and even sweatshirts. The argument that those in the former category pose is that people should look their best to honor the God they are worshipping. Those in the latter group contend that clothing is merely an outer fixture — one that has little to nothing to do with praise and salvation.
Of course, the debate is more detailed — and that’s especially true for women. For example, it’s more than just formal versus informal: women are also constantly the center of debates about skirt length and shirt tightness when in the pews.
And it seems the controversy extends beyond the church community. On Tuesday, Yahoo’s celebrity gossip site omg! published a piece detailing Britney Spears’ outfit choice for a Sunday church visit. Under a headline that reads, “Britney Spears Wore–What?!–to Church?,” omg! wonders if the popular pop singer, 31, and her attire were too racy for a church service at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village, Calif. (You can see her clothing in the above image.)
The outlet describes her “revealing outfit” as consisting of “a super-short skirt and sky-high heels.” Rather than being suited for church, the ensamble, according to omg!, is more tailored to “a night on the town.” Watch the video report describing the outfit, below:
While you may care little about Spears, the real issue here is church attire. Based on what you saw in the clip, was the pop singer’s outfit appropriate for church — or something that women simply shouldn’t be wearing inside of a house of worship? Or, was it fine and nothing out of the ordinary? Also, what are your overall views about the types of clothes that should be worn in church? Do you support formal or informal wear?

But as one grows in their understanding of the scriptures they will come across passages like 1st Timothy 2:9-10 “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided **** and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.” (NASB) The focus becomes the changing of the heart towards God which then affects the way we dress that glorifies Him.

Are not MOST of the Issues Facing The Republic Today, at least tangentially related to the Principle of HOW WE TREAT ONE ANOTHER? About the Principles of “MY RIGHTS” vrs “My RESPONSIBILITY”? About the Effects of what WE do/say/practice/consume on Our Neighbors and Society as a Whole?
HOW then is this issue of CHOICE and EFFECT NOT a Fit Subject for Consideration.
Not to mention an exmination of How Media and Marketing can EFFECT MORAL CHOICES?
As for Blaze doing it. Have you MISSED the Fact Glenn processes News through his FAITH lens?

The people on here who call themselves Christians who are passing judgement on her need to be reminded of one of the important things their book teaches. Your bible teacher you are not to judge others. That is the job of God. It’s your job to love your fellow man regardless of their sins real and/or perceived.

Is that showing reverence to God?
2 Timothy2:9 Likewise I desire the women to adorn themselves in well‐arranged dress, with modesty and soundness of mind, not with styles of **** braiding and gold or pearls or very expensive garb,10 but in the way that befits women professing to reverence God, namely, through good works.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 3:38pmIf your argument is we aren’t allowed to hold fellow Christians responsible for their Right Behavior, Sman, you haven’t read “The Book” all that much.
Start with Corinthians and James if you think it’s all “live and let live”.
Jesus himself never hesitated to say “SIN no MORE” as well as “neither do I condemn you”.
To Forgive and Show mercy is NOT the same as to “look the other way” “tolerate” or “not care.”

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 5:33pmSEARCHER,
My grandparents generation were so poor that they had one good suit of clothes or one dress, and ONE pair of shoes — most likely hand-me-downs, as they were from large families.
The few other items of clothes they had were play clothes that they wore to school too.
That one good outfit was worn only to church.
It wasn’t about what they had, or didn’t have. The choice to wear their best to church reflected where THEY PLACED GOD IN THEIR LIVES.
The Lord got your best, even if it was a well-worn hand-me down suit or “dressy” dress.
It’s a cultural thing.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 3:21pmGod doesn’t care what she wears. He cares that she is Saved by The Blood of Christ. Going to church is a good start—no matter what she wears. I think God has given her some incredible gifts. I believe one day she’ll use those gifts to glorify Him. When she begins a relationship with Christ as her Savior and Lord……she’ll change from the inside out. For now pray for her to grow closer to God, and THANK GOD she’s going to church. Are you?????

If it ain’t appropriate in “Church” then it probably means it ain’t appropriate anywhere, and vice versa.
Though I wouldn’t in most cases, extend that all the way to Making Love. Making OUT? Maybe.

Doesn’t mean my opinion has any greater intrinsic value, but does mean I got some street cred for OFFERING a credible opinion.
Second, don’t get sucked in to strawmen arguments and arguing to infinity here. Stick to PRINCIPLES, ONE of which is the Principle of Biblical Tension, two nearly mutually exclusive things held side by side. God’s Sovereignty-Man’s Free Will, Faith-Works, Law-Grace, etc.
One of the Tensions here is that “man looks on the outside, but God looks on the heart”.
Note this as applications in two directions. 1. God, in some sense, doesn’t CARE how we “look” just that we SHOW UP with a LEARNERS ‘tude. And so, in a sense, should WE not care how others look. However, 2. We do have to take responsibility that our outside does trigger response in other humans. Which leads us to a very key principle of “Church.”
ALL decisions made in “Church”, the “Body of Christ”, are CORPORATE in the sense of “you don’t live to yourself or die to yourself, but for others and God”. We “look out not just for our personal interests but the interests of others.” LOTS of Scripture on that. [Note that THIS has application for MY obesity—I got to take personal responsibility that it DOES NOT set a Healthy EXAMPLE for Self-Discipline and Self-Care and COULD encourage others to cut themselves slack on Hea

So, on THIS issue SISTERS, [not as much going on with “”guns out” guys and tight male jeans in church these days—if “codpieces” every come back into fashion we will need to talk] at SOME point you have to ask, “WHY am I DOING this THIS way, and WHAT do I THINK its EFFECT is?”
A short skirt is going to draw male (and some female) attention to your legs. Is that what you were after? Why? A tight or see-thru (pic looked a bit “sheer” to me) blouse will draw male attention to your bust. Is that the objective? Is the effect you are going for “nice” or “HOT!”? Be honest and remember we’re supposed to NOT put temptation in each other’s way.
Now does ANY of this let the Males off the hook for CONTROLLING their looks and THEIR lust. Nope! But neither do the Sisters get to play a “well I dress this way for my husband/boyfriend/target subject for first two but NOT for other men and THEY shouldn’t look!” Nope again. Lots of Scripture on cutting the “weaker” Church member some slack.
We AIN’T allowed to just “put it out there.”
PERSONAL responsibility for CORPORATE effect.
Which brings us to the Fairly recent (last few years) return to the “spike” heels.

3..Used to be you could only find the 5inch plusers (8’’ ain’t unusual now, got to have that “built up” clunky toe piece to make it work) in the “Centurians” “Fredericks of Hollywood” or other “Sex Specialty” Adult Catalogs. They had, a few years back before the Trend went Mainstream/Mainstreet, the sobriquet “Eff me pumps”. I leave it to the Sisters to decode that and consider how they like that language and what that should tell them about the EFFECT!
4. I suggest that the Principle Effect of such High Spike Heels is two fold and very specific. It places the Woman (of child bearing age usually) on her tip toes in such a way as to indicate her pelvis is presenting for intercourse. And it contains more than a hint of “bondage” and “Sado masochism” with both the position on the tip toes and the unstable nature of the spike heel.
Blow me off, call me a perv if ya want, sisters. But THAT’S the Truth. DEAL with it, and decide if that’s what you INTEND or not, because it WILL be the EFFECT.
Final note. I recently shifted Congregations and Denominations as my previous Faith Community underwent Leadership and Directional Change. I couldn’t help but notice that far fewer sisters, of any age, wore “Eff Me-s” at the PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) Congregation than at the Independent Charismatic/Pentecostal one. It was “the style” at the latter, especially among the Hispanic Congregatio

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 3:02pmFirst of all, as Christians, they should not be judging what she’s wearing. Secondly, Jesus doesn’t care what you wear. That said, I’m no Britney fan, but it appears to me that she tried to tone down what she normally wears. I think the people she deals with in her business, influence her quite a bit, so maybe she’s not aware of what this looks like to others. I also want to say that when I became Christian, as my heart grew in Christ, so did my respect…not only for others, but for myself as well. That changed what not only what I wanted to wear, but my attitude. Hopefully, this will happen to her, too.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 2:47pmFor a Christian woman, it is not Christian to tempt others through your dress, so if it is something revealing or you find that people are getting the wrong impression though your clothing then it may be good to evaluate that piece with a discerning heart. There is plenty of great clothing available for Christians that is both modest and fashionable. It is not a sin to like nice clothes, but it is a sin when that desire for fashion becomes more important than your faith.
When and if Brittany becomes a “true” believer; as others have said the holy spirit will convict her of
her clothing choices. By their fruits you will know them…
1 Timothy 2:9 – “And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their **** or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes.” (NLT)
Proverbs 31:30 – “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting: but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”(NIV)

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 2:33pmIf a burlap bag is all you own to cover your self, that’s one thing but when you own a different outfit for each day of the year, and won’t wear something respectful, that is saying I do not respect God or myself and it is telling people around you, that you do not care enough to give some thought to your surroundings, the people who are there and why you and they are there. Dressing (respectfully)up for a few hours in stead of advertizing your body or being so dressed down that you have difficulty finding your way out of the clothing, is very refreshing and very impressionable, too bad people no longer dress for the reason or to show respect for your faith.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 2:27pmThe point about what she wore to church isn’t simply about clothes. When women wear overly tight or revealing clothes they entice others to sin by lusting after them (does look but don’t touch sound familiar?). Jesus said in Matthew 5:27-28 that lusting after woman was the same as committing adultery, which is condemned throughout Scripture and particularly in the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:14). The reason women should dress appropriately as ladies isn’t simply because God has a dress code. It’s to help the men out by not giving them an extra occasion to sin. Romans 14:21 talks about how we are not supposed to be a stumbling block to others. Incidentally, the Bible includes a revealed thigh as nakedness (Exodus 28:42). So ladies, please do the men, and impressionalbe young boys and girls (Mattew 18:6), a favor and dress approprately.
I’m definitely for dressing in your best to honor God, but I would rather seen someone come in an old and tattered track suit than something tight/revealing like Britney’s example.

I don’t think it’s all that important what you wear to church. We live in a ski resort, and often see ski attire at services, or hunters in their hunting gear. It’s cold, so last week I wore my jeans and I’m the pastor’s wife.
But socially speaking, Brittany might have been a bit more sensitive and worn something more conservative. I see people dressed like this at funerals and wonder what people are thinking sometimes. I suspect girls just don’t know how to appropriately dress anymore (according to social norms, not what God thinks).
