‘Has God Ever Spoken to You Directly?’: Here’s How Blaze Readers Responded

Recently, we asked readers if God has ever spoken to them directly. For those who don’t believe in a higher power, the question might seem odd, however many Americans report hearing — either audibly or through other means — from God.
Consistent with past findings, the overwhelming majority of Blaze readers in our latest poll said that they are Christians (of the 3,352 individuals who answered the question, 96 percent make this claim). And these individuals, based on their own account, are extremely close with the Almighty.
Overall 93 percent of respondents reported sometimes feeling God’s presence, with 94 percent claiming that they also feel connected to God while they pray. And, more than nine in ten (92 percent) said they have felt “God’s presence through an unexplained peace — especially during troubling circumstances.”
While these aforementioned indicators are either personal or internal measures of connectedness, the results changed a bit when Blaze readers were asked about more specific and direct communications with God. While 66 percent answered affirmatively when asked if they have ever felt the Lord communicate with them “through mental imagery,” the proportion of those claiming they have heard Him speak directly was much lower; four in 10 (41 percent) reported hearing God speak audibly, while 59 percent said they have never had such an experience. Similarly, only 42 percent of Blaze readers said that God has visited them in their sleep (i.e. through a dream).
Regardless of some of these lower proportions, Blaze readers are less-than-judgmental when it comes to those who have reported that God has “spoken to them directly.” In fact, when asked if people making such a claim are crazy, only 5 percent of readers answered affirmatively, with 95 percent saying “no.” So, even if Blaze readers haven’t experienced direct communication or connection, they are not skeptical of those who have.

Interestingly, when the question turned away from audibly hearing God’s voice to experiencing it inside one’s mind, a larger proportion — 74 percent — of the 3,118 respondents answered that the Lord has reached them in this way. Only 26 percent of Blaze readers who participated said that they have never heard the Almighty speak in this manner.
Even though Blaze readers are less likely to experience more overt connections with God than they are more indirect (or less pronounced) ones, they are highly likely (95 percent) to believe that “visions and miracles” in the Bible — many of which involved God directly communicating with men — can still happen today.
The vast majority of respondents also credit God (more than 90 percent for each indicator) with “positively changing” their lives, intervening to help them “overcome a personal obstacle” and for having a “distinct plan” for their lives.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 4:24pmHebrews 1:1-2 – God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son…
God has communicated with man over time in dreams, visions, direct revelation, etc. If we are to believe His word, God now speaks to us through His Son.
Matthew 17:5 – God said…Hear Him (Jesus).
How do we hear today? Through the Word of God…the Bible. No dreams, visions, direct revelations, etc…
God is NO RESPECTER of persons, so why would He pick and choose who He appears to give additional comfort, directions, or instruction? God has “given to us ALL THINGS that pertain to LIFE and GODLINESS, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:3), and Jude 3 tells us “to contend earnestly for the faith which was delivered ONCE for all.”
We have everything that we need in the Bible.
Yes, God speaks to us today, but only through His Word!

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 5:07pmWhile it is true that God does not give new revelation today, that is NOT the same as giving comfort and guidance to a child (and believers ARE His children). You say that God now speaks through His Son; well and good. Then it was JESUS who spoke to me one morning some 40 years ago when I was in the throws of self loathing to the point of being unable to say my own name. He said, “God likes your name. Jesus likes your name. WHO ARE YOU TO NOT LIKE YOUR NAME???” That’s it. 16 words. One time. No blinding revelation, no angelic host, no trumpets. Never repeated. But He changed my life. It was not new teachings for the Church, not some fancy treatise on scripture or theology, just a simple wakeup call from a loving Father to a wayward son. To me God is ALIVE. He speaks to whom He wills, when He wills. Maybe He wants YOU to grow without hearing directly from Him, and that may well be – but don’t confuse revelation with comfort or protection, and don’t put an Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent GOD in a box because someone else’s reality doesn’t match up with your philosophy. JMnsHO, YMMV.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 5:13pmI agree Troll.
God does in fact still speak to His children, He just does it through the Holy Spirit. Jesus told his disciples he had to leave so the Holy Spirit could come and teach them all things.
I have had spiritual dreams that came true.
I have had visions that were 100% verified.
I have been woken up in the middle of the night and spoken to directly.
I have been given revelatory prophecies, that came true.
But, mostly God speaks to us through the revelation of his word.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 5:19pmJust as a follow-up, in re-reading your post I note where you ask, “…so why would He pick and choose who He appears to give additional comfort, directions, or instruction?”. PLEASE tell me, HiHoRando, that your god is not so small that he can’t do anything you don’t understand or approve of. Personally, I would have argued against the Holocaust … but His ways are not man’s ways. Remember, the promise of God to the Hebrews that He (paraphrasing) knew the plans He had for them, plans for good and not ill, plans to prosper them etc., … that promise was given as they were basically going out the door for 70 years of exile in Babylon. Would YOU have told them that, or would you have told them that they were in for a time of chastisment/punishment for their rebellion?
May it never be that I am one who trys to decide what *GOD* can and cannot do. That’s DEFINITELY above my pay grade!

I had a roommate in college that felt such a need to speak in tongues that he blurted out nonsensical jiberish within 1 month of becoming a born again. Yes I have no doubt people can convince themselves of pretty much anything. Some even convinced themselves that Sarah Palin was intelligent and is doing something other than parlaying her 15 secs. of fame into as much money as she can. So much for a great citizen seeking to serve her country.

You are way off base my friend. God truly does speak to and reveal Himself to people still today. He certainly has revealed the end times to us through His word. But He still reveals things to people in their personal lives. You must be from a denomination that preaches that miracles happened long ago but not anymore. I was in one of those faiths once. I thank God he led me to a real church that preaches His word. You are correct that you need to read His word. You certainly won’t connect with God if you aren’t reading and studying his word regularly.

Twice HE spoke directly to me. Once when I was really down and once when I was really happy and contented and just passing the breeze with HIM.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 8:09pmIf He does not speak to you, then you must have made up your mind that He has said all you want to hear. The five-fold ministries, one of which is the Prophet, brings fresh revelation continually. He (God) listens for His words, spoken through his Prophets and declared by us, to act. (Why this is so is a whole other ball of wax – suffice to say angels learn of the things of God by listening to us.)
Without revelation, there is no move of God. That’s biblical, as in Israel when there was no Prophet, there was no favor, and wickedness arose, and they pretty much got their butts kicked by just about everybody. Such times as these are when you should seek out a Prophet, and hear what God is planning for America, for example. Unless, of course, you have your mind made up.

What a joy it is to converse with God with intimacy and depth… and use scripture to confirm that what He speaks to us is genuinely from Him.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 9:55pmIt is strange to me to hear so many people say that God speaks to them personally, but that new revelation is not given. That is contradictory.
Prayer = man speaking to God,
Revelation = God speaking to man.
In the ancient times such as with Moses, or Abraham God spoke to them. They in turn taught all who were around that would listen. In those days, not many people believed what they would say. For Example, Noah. He was mocked and scorned by all. There were only seven souls who lived. If we believe that God is no respector of persons, then why did he pick those men? He picked those men because they would listen, not because they are better than any one else.
Today God is the same, He has chosen men today to speak to, why? because they listen to him. They in turn teach all who are willing to listen. Let all who have ears to hear, God has chosen 12 Apostles. He has restored his gospel, along with all the truths that have been lost for hundreds of years. Many have found this to be true. I am one who knows it is true, not by any man do i know it is true, but by the whisperings of the Holy Spirit.
Unfortunately many will read what i have said and will consider it foolishness. I am sorry for you if you are one, please go to Mormon.org and read for yourselves.

The Holy Spirit was poured out on the Church in Acts. That is Gods Spirit residing in the Hearts of Born again Christians. That being said baptism of the Holy Spirit is separate event so you CAN be saved and not have the Holy Spirit therefore not hearing that still small voice.
If you are a Christian and are not hearing God speak to you. Seek Him and you will find, ask for his baptism.

Many of you have probably felt the same for the past few years, wondering why the people of our beloved country have chosen to go down a path that we cannot follow. Feeling hopeless, I begged God to please send me a sign. I asked to send a shooting star. That very second, the same second that I asked for the sign, a shooting star appeared in the sky, exactly where I was looking. It was so beautiful and amazing, and I was and am so very thankful to God. I thank him for the beautiful world he has created, the wind, the sun, the rain, cold and heat, summer and winter, spring and fall, all so very beautiful. Thank you for my life.

Yes! And He’s said quite allot actually.
Read it all … in the Holy Bible (yes, it’s said “directly to you”).
Okay, so maybe you were thinking of some … LOUD THUNDERING? Kind of like Charton Heston’s “Moses”?
11 – … And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind;
. and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake;
12 – and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire;
. and after the fire a still small voice.
13 – So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
- 1 Kings 19, Holy Bible
Or maybe it’s more like … a George Burns in “Oh, God”?
JERRY LANDERS: “Uh … sometimes … uh … now and then … couldn’t we just … talk?”
GOD: “I’ll tell you what. You talk, I’ll listen.”

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 4:19pmThis reminds me of a story The Monk once posted on the Blaze…
The Monk and the Elephant:
Once there was a Monk who wandered around the country side. Through towns and villages and forests he wandered. He saw God in everything he saw and always proclaimed, “God is in the rock, God is in the lizard, God is in the trees, God is in the person, and God is in the breeze”.
In one village that this Monk was wandering through a mad Elephant had gotten loose and was terrorizing the village. As the Monk walked down the road making his proclamations a voice of one of the villagers cried out, “Mad elephant, get out of the road, run, hide, get off the road”. The Monk looked at the elephant that was charging at him and proclaimed, “God is in the elephant”. Well, the elephant grabbed the Monk with his trunk and tossed him violently into a tree.
The moral of the story is,” God was in the voice telling the Monk to get off the road”.

It just “a voice” I can’t even tell you what it sounds like, his words are few, they soothe me immediately and the feeling of love he brings cannot be described, the closest description I can give you is the love of a parent to his child but even that doesn’t amply describe it.
I don’t deserve to have him listen to my prayers let alone respond to them. I’m a flawed and terrible sinner and I have much to answer to him for when I face him…yet his love is so great that he will listen even to someone like me.
And yes..I know how vulnerable one can sound having just described all that but I don’t care, God is far more important than getting uptight about something like that.

And what’s with these Tea Party crazies and their whining and legalized murder and hatred for the poor? Can’t you do better than that?”
And He said, “Hang on, My Sensei. Look, every now and then even I have to take a dump. And when I do I typically plop out a Limbaugh or a Hannity or yet another Palin. The heavenly host calls it Pinching a Gipper. But I promise, I will smite those pretenders in due time and visit upon them the fires of righteous judgment for their greedy and indolent ways.”

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 4:14pmThe Blaze sometimes comes-up with a good discussion point, this was one of them. Indeed, I’m one of those who have been in God’s presence and have heard His voice. I can definitely say, that while I was in His presence, all things seemed possible, and I could view the past, present, and future happenings of this earth. As if I was in the bosom of Eternity. His voice while He spoke gave me the impression of great power coming from a distance, many more things could be said of this experience, but personal experience of your own, would fill-in all those things you wanted to know for your self. So it’s of ‘no’ surprise when many people have had experiences beyond their immediate world of living. and it’s of ‘no’ surprise when Satan manifest himself in all the BAD things around us, and in some Government leaders, and he does rule in the armies of the earth … and more nations than is comfortable … just saying

As I drove home one afternoon I heard a voice as if they were sitting right next to me. I was told there was more than one way to be healed, there was the physical, the spiritual and the physcological. I knew then we would not get the physical, but we did indeed have miracles of the others as God worked through us, our families and friends. There was peace in my heart along with the pain, but I accepted that it was all part of the great plan for our lives. And best of all, I know with an unshakable faith we will be together again.

You will not climb a stairs…you will walk to the light and it is very brite…..The journey of getting there will be very confusing at first and you will experience a place to travel to and a place you will return to. Then one day, you will go to the light….St Peter will be there….God is there too……That is how far I made it till I was revived…St Peter told me we would revisit this in one year….I am not longer atheist…that was 12 years ago…God Bless….I never forgot the short trips to the other place…I really hated to return….one day I hope to stay at the other place.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 3:39pmYep all the time, seriously, every time I go to do something stupid…I feel a tap on the shoulder, a wrench in my gut. Most of the time I listen, and there’s the other times. Well let’s just say God is a forgiving God!

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 3:46pmMitten, you are not alone. Maybe that’s why we have a conscience and understand the failings of the human race.

If I wasn’t so deaf, I would be a better person.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 3:56pmYep, and yep…I wrote what I wrote because the question asked in the article is a trick question…God is a person’s conscience. Problem is over half (52%) have stopped paying attention!

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 4:23pmHe has never spoken to me audibly, but I know some whom He has. Among them my Pastor. I suppose just as the Holy Spirit leads us in different ways God also speaks in different ways.
With me I strongly feel His presence and I have learned to be sensitive to the prodding of the Holy Spirit in my life. More and more often I simply become an empty vessel and allow Him to work through me. I have often said or typed things that are beyond me. I have also known things that I did not know…If that makes any sense.
He is there, and I have reached the point in my walk with Him that He is more tangible to me than those around me I can see and touch. I feel bad for those who do not know Him. All they have to do is but look.
