MSNBC Caught Selectively Editing Another Clip — This Time of Sandy Hook Victim’s Father

MSNBC Caught Selectively Editing Another Clip This Time of Sandy Hook Victims Father

No stranger to selectively edited video clips, MSNBC on Monday aired a misleading and incomplete clip of testimony given by the father of a Sandy Hook victim at a hearing before the Connecticut Legislature. The edited version of his remarks, aired on Martin Bashir’s show, make it appear as if pro-gun advocates maliciously interrupted (or “heckled” as many have said) the dad for no reason as he calmly argued against civilians owning semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines. In fact, the edit was so subtle not even we picked up on it in our original story.

“It’s not a good feeling to look at your child laying in a casket. Or looking at your child with a bullet wound to the forehead. It’s a real sad day,” Neil Heslin, father of Sandy Hook victim Jesse Lewis, said during Monday’s hearing.

“I ask if there is anyone who is in this room that can give me one reason or challenge this question: Why anybody in this room needs to have done of these assault-style weapons or military weapons or high capacity clips?” he asked rhetorically. He paused and then said, “Not one person can answer the question.”

It was at this point that a few members of the audience voiced their support for the Second Amendment. “The Second Amendment shall not be infringed,” one man yelled, appearing to try and answer Heslin’s question.

As the presiding official pointed out, comments were not permitted during the testimony, however. And Bashir was quick to hop on that point.

Here is how he presented it in his selectively edited clip on Monday:

But on Tuesday afternoon, more complete footage of Heslin’s remarks began circulating. In those remarks, it appears the “hecklers” were responding to his rhetorical question.

As you can see, MSNBC decided to completely remove the portion of the video where Heslin asks his rhetorical question. Does that mean no one would have spoke up had Heslin not posed the question? That’s impossible to say. But what is clear is that by removing the full remarks, MSNBC cheated its audience of making up its mind about what the video shows. And although a relatively small edit, the absence of the question changes the context drastically.

MSNBC has been caught selectively editing video in the past, too. In June, host Andrea Mitchell aired a doctored clip of Mitt Romney talking about WaWa convenience stores to make him look “out of touch.” In reality, he was explaining the difference between innovation in the private and public sectors.

Then of course in March, NBC was busted selectively editing the George Zimmerman police tapes to make it appear as if he voluntarily proclaimed Trayvon Martin “looks black” when he was actually asked by a police dispatcher.

Finally, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough in September aired edited video of a Romney rally in which he argued supporters were chanting “Ryan! Ryan!” as Romney spoke, insinuating that he was being overshadowed by his running mate Paul Ryan. Romney then attempted to get the crowd to chant “Romney-Ryan! Romney-Ryan!” — Scarborough mocked Romney incessantly for his “failed” chant.

However, upon closer review of the tape, it became evident that the crowd was actually chanting “Romney! Romney!” and the former GOP presidential candidate was attempting to get the crowd to include Ryan. A Blaze reader who was present at the event also confirmed that to be the case.

UPDATE 9:10 p.m. ET: CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Slate and even (kind of) Piers Morgan have conceded that Heslin was not really “heckled” during the hearing. Our friends at Twitchy have the details.

MSNBC, on the other hand, had yet to issue a correction as of Tuesday night. The network did later post the full video of Heslin’s testimony but did not clarify as to why it allowed such a deceptively edited clip to air on Bashir’s show.

UPDATE II: MSNBC is now reportedly “reviewing” the “heckling” tape aired on the network Monday, The Washington Post reports.

“We’re reviewing the video in question,” an MSNBC source said.

While I desperately feel sorrow deep in my heart for this man loss of his son, as I do for the loss of a son to a military member’s family. I’ll be the first to say if I had the power to reverse all of it I would. He’s understandably thinking out of his grief and not thinking clearly on overall picture, nor considering the American citizens constitutional right to keep and bear arms for their own protection. Yes Sir, there is a need for these weapons, expecially with the current push for a socialist government take over in this country by this administration. I noticed no one was allowed to answer you question, that was really 1st amendment fair. I’m sorry there are stupid people in this world who do stupid things with all sorts of lethal weapons and objects and kill innocent people such a your son and others in their wake of rage, all the more reason to be armed and have the ability to defend yourself at home. But, consider the number of unborn children the socialist democrat left have murdered with their laws on abortion. Where’s the grief for those silent victims of the socialist left’s hate and rage?

The media wants to cherry pick the news so they can rewrite history, how much international business is the United States loosing to China when China can go around and say, look at Israel, and look at every dime the United States sends to an Islamic state to support the nation of Islam?

The media cherry picks events and ignores common sense, sending the mentally ill over the edge into insanity by protecting Hollywood and their pyschotic entertainment, and supporting politicians that create gun free zones, that invite the mentally unstable to carry out their fantasy’s with what ever means necessary?

The only defense against a cherry picking media is to stand up for your civil rights?

I love my child very much! However, the gun did not kill the children at Sandy Hook. The guy that pulled the trigger killed the children. That many had psychological problems as did many of the other people involved in mass shootings.

Having grown up in a home with guns. I knew were gun and bullets were. I knew how to shoot the guns and I knew that they were not toys and that if I was ever caught touching them, showing them off to friends, or anything like that, that their would be hell to pay.

It’s not that I don’t care about children. It’s that the gun is being blamed on the deaths of the children and the gun didn’t pull his own trigger. The killer stole his mother’s guns and pulled the trigger. The media is not looking at the facts, and is siding with the government who wants to take our rights away, and that is something that I and others will fight for.

How unusual for MSNBC. They do this kind of selective editing routinely. Well of course they’re liberal elitists, it’s for your own good. Any means justifies the end.

I actually saw when they aired footage of a man at an Arizona rally who was carrying (coincidently) a firearm, which is legal in his state. They used this photo to establish a meme whereby tea partiers and conservatives were “dangerous and racist”. What BSNBC didn’t show you though was the rest of the man in the looped footage. The footage was edited to hide the man’s race. He was black.

An AR-15, or the so-called “Assault Weapon”, was not used in the school shooting. The shooter even tried weeks earlier to buy a rifle but was turned down in the background check. So he had to kill his Mother to steal her rifle. There were initial reports, right after the shooting, that police found the AR-15 in his car, NOT IN THE SCHOOL. The rifle was not used. The shooter went into the school with 4 handguns, NOT an Assault Rifle as the media has charged.

In the initial hours of this shooting, the Police said they found the rifle in the car. But the Administration-controlled MSM had a pre-planned attack already waiting, to ban so-called assault weapons and jumped on that line of reporting, knowing it was a lie, which included people like Piers Morgan who said the shooter used an AR-15 that shoots hundreds of rounds per minute, as if it were a machine gun.

  Even Glenn covered this fact up in his “debunking” episode. He glossed over two areas for which he had no material to debunk with. He didn’t talke about four handguns being found in the school and he didn’t adress reports from federal officials stating that the AR-15 was found in the trunk. An AR-15 doesn’t look like a shotgun and LEOs, local, state and fedral, would know this. They wouldn’t report the AR-15 was found in the trunk if it was actually a shotgun. He also didn’t explain what an off-duty LEO from another town was doing in the woods?

  You are all correct. No “assault rifle” was used. He supposedly had one in his trunk (or he did after the government agents got there). Why hasn’t someone, somewhere asked obama,..”Mr. anal-opening,….how can you try and take away “assault” weapons and use Sandy Hook as your excuse when one was not used in that incident?” I am not one of those that think Sandy Hook was all a set up and never happened….but I do believe more than Lanza was involved and it was a black-ops move.   The police and the coroner have said all along that the AR-15 was used, and that the weapon found in the vehicle was a shotgun. No reports from police have ever strayed from that.
  The helicopter footage of the shotgun being removed from the trunk backs it up.
  
  The only sources that have claimed otherwise are speculating reporters from the early hours of the tragedy when half of them were still mis-pronouncing the name of the town.
  
  Keep asking questions, but try to stick to the ones that haven’t been answered yet.

I love how he pretty much says he has no idea whats going on in America, but people should listen to his opinion. I feel for his loss, but his views are bias. He is still too emotional to make a level headed decision. The problem is people like him get the spotlight and lead the way into a debate. He is an idiot. While his motives are just and sincere, his “opinions” to solve problems are biased. MSNBC….honestly at this point do we expect any diffrerent…im surprised they havent made a clip and cgi one of the kids faces saying how bad guns.

  The media will not destroy us, we will. It is our responsibility to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. If we are to lazy to do our duty, that is our fault. As long as their is beer in the fridge, American Idol and sports on the televison and gas is under $15 per gallon, we just set on our couches doing nothing.

I don’t really think this is what anyone means by ‘freedom of the press’. This modern tendency to twist stories to your agenda and edit them like this is completely wrong and misleading to everyone.

NBC has done this so many times its virtually SOP. There is a reason journalists are rated on the same level as ambulance chasing lawyers.
