Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke, Jr. made headlines earlier this week by urging residents to become responsible gun owners so they can defend themselves during situations when first responders are unable to get there in time. On Tuesday night, the sheriff joined Piers Morgan on CNN where he was berated and criticized for making such “irresponsible” statements.

Morgan accused Clarke of using a “Hollywood voice” and dramatizing the serious debate surrounding gun control, to which Clarke replied, “this is my voice.” The sheriff explained that his department has limited resources and it is unrealistic to expect police to be able to respond in time to each and every emergency.

Morgan then attempted to discredit firearms as an effective means of self-protection, asking how many people actually defended themselves or their families by firing a gun in Milwaukee. Clarke said he did not have a figure off the top of his head.

“You haven’t got a clue, have you?” Morgan said in a condescending tone.

“You want to arm everybody in Milwaukee. You do these racy Hollywood-style adverts, you want them all out there, armed and shooting,” Morgan continued. “What you’re creating is a return to the Wild West in Milwaukee. So I think it’s actually relevant that you don’t have any idea how many people actually need a firearm at home to defend themselves.”

Morgan hardly let Clarke get a word in the debate as he repeatedly interrupted and berated his guest. Finally, Clarke asked, “Are we going to have an honest exchange here or are you just going to talk over me?”

The sheriff explained that a citizen’s decision to own a firearm is an “individual responsibility” and it’s not up to him to decide who should or should not own a gun.

“No, no, no. I’m not going to let you get away with that,” Morgan interrupted yet again. He then repeatedly spoke over Clarke.

“I said you can hide under the bed,” Clarke said. “Those are choices the individual has to make, not law enforcement.”

Morgan’s counterargument? He said it is no longer a “personal choice” when a sheriff encourages people to become gun owners. He did not clarify exactly what he meant by that. Using that line of reasoning, every single Milwaukee resident would have bought a gun just because the sheriff encouraged it, apparently unable to make the decision on their own.

    Why do I see NOTHING wrong with, illogical or irrational about the Sheriff’s “suggestion” to residents to learn how to protect themselves with a fire arm? Fire arms are LEGAL you know? Because there is nothing wrong with it. It’s makes perfectly logical, rational sense. Only a gun grabbing liberal socialist communist could possibly have an argument against that. You gun grabbing socialist need to think about this…… are you willing to rip this country apart and are you prepared die to try and take away the guns from the MAJORITY of the LEGAL gun owning American public? I don’t threaten anyone, don’t need to….. but there are those American patriot citizens out there, who highly value the US Constitution, unlike liberal democrat traitors, who will blow your face off if you continue down this road.       The only thing wrong with the above statement is: we are the first responders – police are 2nd responders – that is why we need to be prepared with knowledge about how to use a gun, ability to handle the gun and a gun. Sheriff David Clarke, Jr. Thank You!

      Here’s a thought.

      If it turns out that a person has to get a background check (or if you live in a state that already does), that person shall be denied a firearm if evidence shows that person has ever been a registered democrat, or has ever participated in liberal, left wing, progressive political lobbying, that person shall be denied a firearm. After all, that is what ‘they’ want, and it is about time ‘they’ put their ‘money where their mouth is’, and live it the way ‘they’ want the rest of us to live it. These political idiots are on record saying, “It is suppressing the right to vote, for a person to prove who they are before voting, with a picture ID.” What do they call it when a person has to fill out a two (2) page Form 4473, show a picture ID, and answer all the questions on that form “correctly” OR that person is DENIED their RIGHT to the 2nd Amendment and cannot bear arms.

      That is a whole lot more than suppression!

      The 2nd Amendment was so important to our founding fathers for so many reasons, it can’t be taken on with an idiot like “Prince Morgan” in the 3 minutes he has a slot open for you on his show, it is an agenda. I think everyone should decline his invitation, people would stop tuning in and maybe CNN would drop him.

      The 2nd Amendment is an Amendment that does not share. What is meant by that is the 1st Amendment has religion, speech, press, assembly, and redress. The 2nd says exactly what it means, period!

      You are right. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Moreover, it is just plain common sense.

      The sheriff seems to me to be a clear-thinking and forthright person, and those in his juridiction are doubtless pleased to have him in that position.

      It has been noted that when politicians cut police budgets, the police sometimes respond by making cuts in frontline officers and then point the finger of blame at the politicians in order to apply pressure. I do not know if that is the case here.

      Mr Morgan is unloved in his own country and one can see why. He denigrates and mocks decent men and women who are among those who have welcomed him to their country. His arguements are sometimes specious and facile, and at other times just plain false – as he must be aware.

      In the UK he was caught red-handed engaging in journalistic dishonesty of the worst sort. And as an editor, no less. If I were British, I would be cringing with embarrassment.

      He is self-serving, rude, contemptuous, and utterly lacking in integrity.

      The sheriff is only stating the facts. Law enforcement will not be there if you are confronted by a intruder. Mostly what law enforcement intent is a deterrent to crime. But unfortunately mostly what the local law does is record the crimes that happen for historical and insurance purpose. And of course as a means to collect revenue for the government.

I think what upsets people like the radical left wing limey liberal is that the Sheriff actually told the public the truth, that being that the police cannot guarantee your safety, and everyone needs to be prepared to defend their own homes. This goes directly against liberal philosophy that the government can take care of all of your problems.       The average life or death situation last seconds the average police response time is 22 minutes……
      The police can’t protect the citizens unless you have a police station on every block in America.
      The police are there to bring criminals to justice AFTER THE FACT. Armed law abiding citizens limit the need for police and prisons.
      It’s alot easier to for a lawful citizen to tell police why their attackers has two holes in the chest than for the police to tell that lawful citizens family that their loved ones murderer has been arrested.

      The Milwaukee Mayor should take a look at Kennesaw ,GA. There is a town ordinance that requires every household to own a working firearm and ammo for the same. And people all over the country said there would be gunfights in the street. Of course, it didn’t happen, and the crime rate went down, down, down. It’s a suburb of Metro Atlanta. Also rated as one of the best places in the US to raise a family. Don’t expect to see a 60 Minutes story on Kennesaw soon.
      There are things I know, and things I believe. Let’s just talk what I know. If someone enters my house with BAD INTENTIONS, I know that a .45 hollow point will move that someone back far enough for me to get a second shot at them. I will then call 911, the police will come and confiscate my firearm and perhaps arrest me. Since Florida has a “stand your ground ” law I am confident I will eventually be released, and may even get my sidearm back(probably not)
      If that same “person with bad intentions” enters a firearm free home, that home owner will call 911 and the police will come……………..and draw a chalk line around the home owners body, and investigate his and maybe his whole family’s murder. AND there is a 50% chance the police will even charge someone with that crime, and sometimes they even get a conviction.

      I LIVE in Milwaukee county. Sheriff Clarke is RIGHT. piers morgan is an IDIOT. Yes it IS an INDIVIDUALS RIGHT and CHOICE to defend themselves. The woman firing the gun is question is NOT what the sheriff was talking about. She was hiding behind the sheriffs statement in order to defend her stupidity. The fact is many people have used a gun to defend themselves and may not have reported it to anyone, or perhaps to the Milwaukee PD, NOT the sheriffs office.       Clarke is the best – Milwaukee is fortunate to have him. Morgan hasn’t a clue. The MANY criminals in Milwaukee continue to be well armed, it’s been crime ridden since the crack epidemic in the early ’80s. A lot of areas where police risk their lives by even showing up. Clarke makes much needed common sense – a rare commodity. Morgan is a tool and a liberal ideologue. Would LOVE to see him MOVE to the North Side of Milwaukee, and test his beliefs out FOR REAL.

      This is more of the same from Piers Morgan he invites normal americans who happen to beleive in their 2nd amendment rights on his show then handles them like idiots.Those of us on the pro gun side of this issue should stop boosting this guys ratings by allowing themselves to be ambushed. Most people know what they beleive but have a tough time defending it under pressure if they have not done their homework. Morgan understands that so when he has Ted Nugent or someone else who knows how to handle themselves on his show he treats them with respect.

      Morgan is a sniveling, conniving, sneering little shell of a twit that represents everything wrong with what modern men have become. I’m not entirely certain why this site continues to give him air time, but in this case it was good to see an upstanding traditional male type in authority stand up to “him”. If my family had wanted to hear more of his prattle they would not have emigrated to America in the first place. He needs to be dismissed as irrelevant and consigned to the obscurity his effeminate kind deserves.

      What is REALLY sad here is that he keeps getting beat up over “how many times was a gun fired in defense” yet that is actually the greater point…Officers don’t NORMALLY FIRE upon people, they take them into custody. The other option is that they how a firearm and the PERP RUNS AWAY….Police have that happen all the time. Criminal sees a weapon and flees the scene…did a shot get fired? NO!!!! Did the person protect themselves with a firearm YES!!!
      Look at the recent killings at the Theater or at the school…they did not even fire there…BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO LATE TO CATCH THEM IN THE ACT and STOP them.     2nd Amendment supporters — and shouldn’t that include all Americans? — need to stop responding to questions like this one:
    “Morgan…[asked] how many people actually defended themselves or their families by firing a gun in Milwaukee.”
    It doesn’t matter how many people used a gun for self defense in any particular place. What is important is whether the government is infringing people’s rights to bear arms and be prepared for any emergency, whether caused by street criminals or government criminals.

    Someone needs to drop off Morgan in Camden NJ in the night without a gun. Morgan is completely clueless when it comes to crime in the inner city. Since several of the major cities re in debt and have to cut resources then they can not be as responsive. When an intruder has a gun and the police won’t arrive at the scene in a timely manner then the homeowner has the right to defend themselves with a gun. Is that so difficult to understand. The police chief was just being honest with the citizens of Milwaukee.

All her complaints to police and local government fell on deaf ears – in fact they mocked her. Think this would have happened in Texas? Doubtful. Read and give thanks for your 2nd amendment rights.

    Poor Pierce! He comes across as believing all gun owners are criminals. The fact is he has no idea of what responsible gun owners are all about. He may be surprised to know that most gun owners’ lives are just like his. They get up in the morning, go to work, have families, friends, and hobbies.

    The (hopefully) soon-to-be deported Pierce judges guns only by what damage they can do–NOT by the damage and tragedy they prevent. I hope he is never threatened by a gun-toting criminal, but if he was, I’m afraid his view would be much different–if not from 6 feet under.

    I stopped getting frustrated with Piers Morgan anti-gun interviews. At first, I’d wish his pro-gun guest would make better, clearer points and I’d get frustrated when I’m not satisfied with what I’m hearing.

    I’ve now seen a number of interviews where I’m completely satisfied with the pro-gun retorts to this moron. He simply talks over them, whines and moans when his (in his feeble mind) “gotcha” question doesn’t produce the result he’s expecting.

    Bottom line is, it really doesn’t matter how much sense the pro-gun guest make. He’s absolutely not interested in that… not his (small) liberal audience.
