Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke, Jr. made headlines earlier this week by urging residents to become responsible gun owners so they can defend themselves during situations when first responders are unable to get there in time. On Tuesday night, the sheriff joined Piers Morgan on CNN where he was berated and criticized for making such “irresponsible” statements.
Morgan accused Clarke of using a “Hollywood voice” and dramatizing the serious debate surrounding gun control, to which Clarke replied, “this is my voice.” The sheriff explained that his department has limited resources and it is unrealistic to expect police to be able to respond in time to each and every emergency.
Morgan then attempted to discredit firearms as an effective means of self-protection, asking how many people actually defended themselves or their families by firing a gun in Milwaukee. Clarke said he did not have a figure off the top of his head.
“You haven’t got a clue, have you?” Morgan said in a condescending tone.
“You want to arm everybody in Milwaukee. You do these racy Hollywood-style adverts, you want them all out there, armed and shooting,” Morgan continued. “What you’re creating is a return to the Wild West in Milwaukee. So I think it’s actually relevant that you don’t have any idea how many people actually need a firearm at home to defend themselves.”
Morgan hardly let Clarke get a word in the debate as he repeatedly interrupted and berated his guest. Finally, Clarke asked, “Are we going to have an honest exchange here or are you just going to talk over me?”
The sheriff explained that a citizen’s decision to own a firearm is an “individual responsibility” and it’s not up to him to decide who should or should not own a gun.
“No, no, no. I’m not going to let you get away with that,” Morgan interrupted yet again. He then repeatedly spoke over Clarke.
“I said you can hide under the bed,” Clarke said. “Those are choices the individual has to make, not law enforcement.”
Morgan’s counterargument? He said it is no longer a “personal choice” when a sheriff encourages people to become gun owners. He did not clarify exactly what he meant by that. Using that line of reasoning, every single Milwaukee resident would have bought a gun just because the sheriff encouraged it, apparently unable to make the decision on their own.

Jan. 30, 2013 at 1:10amMorgan can’t seem to get a grasp of America……. and Its Constitution.
His deep-seeded problem probably stems from his inability to accept The Declaration of Independence. -lol
Poor sportsmanship drives his madness….his anger;
against American freedoms
that were prompted by ideas,
presented with words,
promoted by the press
attempted with conviction
… won through the use of arms.
Read A little George Washington …. how about some Thomas Paine.
Read that “little book” ; disresectful dweeb !
>Why not go back home? His own folks don’t want him. –pfffff

Jan. 30, 2013 at 1:07amI happen to think that Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke, Jr. is not only being logical and informative to the people in his jurisdiction, but also helpful and compassionate. When Hitler approached the king of Switzerland and asked what’s to stop his army’s from storming through his country, the king replied “Switzerland does not have an army, Switzerland IS an army. I can have over 1 million troops assembled within an hour.” This is the exact reason that Japan never triedd to bring an occupational force to the United States during WWII. What exactly does this administration have against law-abiding citizens arming themselves as guaranteed by the second amendment of the United States Constitution?

Jan. 30, 2013 at 1:28amI’m with the sheriff on this I am responsible for my own safety. I am responsible for my actions and will defend myself as necessary. Dialing 911 is not a deterrent to an assailant close enough to do me or my loved ones harm immediately, dialing 911 is to have the authorities on the way, if violence is imminent or taking place the authorities will be late. I was able to see an interview of Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke Jr. on a show where he was actually allowed to speak, he actually is concerned for the safety of the people he works for and has given them good advice.

Jan. 30, 2013 at 12:57amJudging by the comments here, I’m assuming it did not go well for the Sheriff. Blaze, what the hell? Seems as if all you are doing is making people angry. What about solutions? For gosh sake’s, the reason you came into being was to combat Progressivism. It’s not just you, many other Conservative websites and talk shows out there are just as guilty. All you do is make us p***ed off. Sometimes being p***ed off can be a great motivator, but what about some solutions? Glenn says R.I.P. G.O.P., but how are we supposed to replace an entire political party by 2016 at the latest? “The Blaze” is nothing but a business, designed to make a profit like any business, but disguised as a minuteman from 1776 with his powder dry and his musket at the ready. We need more than this. We deserve more than this. Some of us are scared, and let’s face it Blaze, you are guilty for spreading some of that fear, real or imagined. Show some integrity. Tell us, your loyal readers, if there is hope. And if so, post the stories and videos that best illustrate that hope. Post some articles by some creative thinking individuals with real solutions to the real problems we are facing. No more opinions ala Ted Nugent, He’s a great guitarist, but he’s on the fringe. Stop entertaining us and start enlightening us. I should have just said that in the first place, but now I’ve written all this and I have too much pride to delete it.

Jan. 30, 2013 at 3:48amLearn how to spell referenced. And your sentence should have read, “You are what is referred to as a pessimist.” , You could have simply said, “You are a pessimist” and your point would have been made, but no, you had to that extra mile and try to impress everyone. How’d that work out for ya?

Jan. 30, 2013 at 12:45amFirstly, I’m in NO WAY PROMOTING VIOLENT ACTIONS when I make this statement, BUT if ever the TSdoesHF, then people like P. Morgan will have one hell of a bullseye on their backs. it may just be in their best interest to learn to use a weapon, because if the nation keeps heading down this road, they’re going to need it.

Jan. 30, 2013 at 12:26amWhen CBS News defended their throwing puff questions to obama, they said that he knew they would be fair to him. Of course, obama knew they would go easy on him, but it’s also obvious that this “fairness” only extends to communist guests. When a conservative is on an MSM news show, the hosts shouts at them and shouts over them.
If these propagandists had a valid argument, they wouldn’t play these dishonest games, and its really sad when you realizes that they know they’re wrong, and the attacks come out of their FEAR of what the conservatives might say next.
I recently saw Chris Matthews berating some conservative guest, then he asked her a question, but before she could finish her answer, the interrupted her by shouting several more questions at her in rapid succession, then when she started to speak, he interrupted her again to announce a commercial. What a pig.
Welcome to 1984…next stop, the Twilight Zone….

Jan. 30, 2013 at 12:24amI challenge this fool, (Pierce Morgan) to go to the South Side of Chicago and hang out at a corner after dark without his elite armed body guard and see what will happen. I’m sure he will not get shot because guns aren’t allowed there. Surely he will not get attacked because according to him no one needs a gun for protection, right Pierce?
Good Luck Pierce, or are you a coward?

Jan. 30, 2013 at 12:23am“…would have went out and bought a gun….” shouldn’t it be “gone out”? I realize this is a fairly minor error, but it seems like every time I read a story on The Blaze there is a grammatical mistake or misspelling. It’s really disappointing.

Jan. 30, 2013 at 12:11amThe now Gov. Walker before he took on that job was Milw. Co. Executive. He kept Clarkes budget much the same from year to year. When Walker left the posistion of County Exec. a democrat took over the Exec posistion and has cut Clarkes budget every year. This year by 10 million. Clarke had to make serious cutbacks in his department. That is why he made the PSA about guns.
