Miami Mother Shot in Face by Robber After She Gave Up Her Purse — and X-Ray Shows Bullet Lodged in Her Throat

A 36-year-old Miami mother of two was walking out of a restaurant Thursday when she was held up for her purse. CBS4 out of Miami reported even after she relinquished her bag, the robber still shot her in the face.

Evelin Matamoros, 36, was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital where doctors were not able to remove the bullet lodged in her lower jaw due to its precarious location, CBS reported.

The Matamoros’ jaw was fractured by the bullet’s trajectory and she was operated on Wednesday by maxillofacial surgeon Michael Peleg to fix her bones and shattered teeth.

“The bone fragments are very close to vital structures of the neck such as blood vessels. She’s at great risk of infection due to the nature of her surgery and the contamination of the surgical field,” Peleg said at a press conference, according to CBS.

The doctors will insert a plate into Matamoros’ jaw during the surgery, but up to three more surgeries could be needed. CBS reported it could be more than a year before she will be able to eat and speak normally.

As for the robber, NBC Miami reported 20-year-old Kamiah Lanier was arrested eight hours after shooting Matamoros and is currently being held without bond on charges of attempted murder and owning a firearm as a convicted felon, among others.

Police spokeswoman Kenia Reves told NBC “not only are we cleaning the streets from people like this, but we also recovered a firearm.”

    I see an evil patern, it’s not enought to rob, they must inflict harm or death as well. Too bad she did not have one of those concealed carry purses and her own permitted gun, one less maggot to share the planet with.

    I grew up in Miami in the fifties and early sixties when it was still a decent place to raise a family….I left thirty years ago and have been back twice….What a dangerous place it has become……

    Don’t expect Joe Biden to make a press conference, hesitate for a few moments while the tears well up in his eyes, and then advocate that anyone that can get their hands on a gun buy one? Is Joe Biden going to say, we have had enough of being vicitims by the degenerate in this society, I am going to introduce legislation to President Obama allowing government paid concealed hand gun carry classes to anyone that wants them, and waive the fees for the carry license, because we have got to put a stop to this kind of senseless acts of domestic terrorism?

    Is Joe Biden going to offer a $5000 tax credit, to anyone who shoots a crook committing a crime? Will you sign that bill Mr. Obama?

    Anyone who shoots someone during the commission of a crime should get the death penalty. Leniency for criminals has done nothing to prevent crimes it has only increased the number of crimes and the severity of the violence. It is a fact that criminals do not obey the law. It is also a fact that dead criminals never commit another crime. Crime reduction will only happen when we reduce criminals. Incarceration and rehabilitation has done nothing to reduce crime. It’s like locking up cockroaches and rats and trying to teach them not to infest your house. Once you turn the pests lose they return to invade your home. Extermination is the answer to eliminating cockroaches and rats especially the two legged kind.

    Democrats have been breaking gun laws ala Fast and Furious for decades. This guy is only one example.
    How many people have died at the hands of liberals who will not enforce gun laws so that they can cry out for more fun laws. This criminal is a symptom of liberals.
    ANY gun law that may get written in the future should have an accountability clause with criminal prosecution for those who sign it, if and when a crime death is committed because of it. Then we will see how good these liberals think they are..

      It seems like the Democrats are blazing the trail of safe work environments for criminals. This is another historical landmark achievement of the Obama administration. We can’t have people going about their daily work of robbing raping and mugging with the constant nagging doubt and stress induced by fear of some unauthorized rube trying to defend his stuff or himself with lethal force. This is a sure impediment to social justice.

    Well, CLEARLY, we need some more gun laws! I mean – laws against bigger magazines, etc, would have prevented this, right? OR, is it possible – just a little bit – that he’s a disgusting felon and he (shock) had the gun illegally? AND is it further possible that all the gun laws in the world wouldn’t have kept this felon, who had the gun illegally, from having this gun?

    In situations like this, pulling a weapon is not easy. That is why I bought my wife a lightweight .38 spl. We have Hornady .38+p hollow point critical defense ammo in it at all times. She keeps it in her purse in the side pocket and keeps it unzipped when walking to/from the car. I’ve always told her if something like this happens, just act like she’s handing the purse over, then bang! bang! bang! Three to the chest. He’ll never suspect it and never see it coming.

      These thugs would be surprised at who is carrying .. he is very lucky she was not … in Florida we have a lot of people with permits and purses who won’t so quietly .. just like your wife .. those who design purses should be aware that women are buying styles like you described for that exact reason.

      I know my state and two that border it that dont have the death penalty. Its also BS that executing murderers is more expensive than housing them for life. I dont know what method you propose,but its cheaper to kill someone than to house them for the rest of their lives,feed them and provide medical care.

      Florida not only has the death penalty .. we have extra laws for ANYONE who uses a gun “unlawfully” .. this guy should never see the light of day .. even if he doesn’t get the needle.

      FLORIDA 10-20-Life

      1) producing a firearm during the commission of certain felonies mandates at least a 10-year prison sentence;

      2) firing one mandates at least a 20-year prison sentence; and

      3) shooting someone mandates a minimum sentence of 25 years regardless of whether a victim is killed or simply injured. The maximum penalty is a life sentence unless the defendant is charged with felony murder or first degree murder in which case the maximum is the death penalty.

      Expound as to why KUPO! It is cheaper to give someone the death penalty vs life on the basis on the costs when you omit the additional legal courtroom gazillion appeal bs. The costs mount because death penalty trials and appeals take far longer than others, involve more lawyers, investigators and expert witnesses, and displace other cases from courtrooms. In contrast, adopting a maximum penalty of life without possibility of parole (for which there is growing sentiment) would incur only a fraction of the death penalty costs, including prison expenses.” It’s a gd government scam! The government still has to pay a crap-load of money either way. We need streamlined capital punishment laws. Screw it I guess…put in more nonviolent offenders and and give the uber-violent life to make the Prison–industrial complex mo-money that the fed is just digitally creating in cyberspace!

      Yes, and there is a very good reason for such a lengthy appeals process. Even with such a process in place innocent people are executed by our judicial system. Before the government is allowed to take the life of one of its citizens we have to be absolutely 100% certain that the person is guilty.

    Couple things…

    -giving this guy what he wanted and complying (what the gun grabbers tell you to do instead of Conceal Carrying) didn’t help this woman.
    -banning this guy from owning a firearm due to his felony conviction didn’t stop him from having it.
    -banning robbery didn’t stop him from doing this.
    -banning armed criminal action didn’t stop him from being armed.
    -banning murder didn’t stop him from attempting it.

    But what the heck…lets ban guns. That’ll stop this. Because banning heroin and cocaine has done so much.

      Some may think the punishment of death is too harsh. But I happen to agree with you a thousand percent. If a person shoots someone in the commission of crime, or for any other reason other than self defense, regardless if the victim lives or dies, there should be an automatic death penality, because by shooting that person(s) their total intent was to kill that individual(s). No exceptions… You would see the crime rate in this area drop really fast.

      I agree of course, but mind that a fair trial is due before the press and public convict him.

      Once again, gun laws and restrictions did not stop him, he is simply an evil man who hates his victims for the fact that they are weak victims. Handing over her purse and cooperating did nothing to keep her safe, laws did nothing to keep her safe, the police did nothing to keep her safe. Being armed would have reduced her risk to a fraction. Better than anything would have been a high likelihood that she would be packing which would have been the deterrent that would have made the encounter unlikely in the first place. Then the odds of the other scenarios would be factored only after the loss of the preceding chance.
