MSNBC Finally Addresses Deceptively Edited Video of Sandy Hook Dad

MSNBC Finally Addresses Deceptively Edited Video of Sandy Hook Dad

On Monday, MSNBC aired a deceptively edited video on “Bashir Live” of testimony given by the father of a Sandy Hook victim. On Tuesday, several outlets, including Twitchy and TheBlaze called out MSNBC for the obvious discrepancy in the video. And on Wednesday, MSNBC finally addressed the controversy — but issued no apology or correction.

“On Monday on our program, we aired a portion of a hearing where we heard from Neil Heslin, whose 6-year-old son Jesse was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School,” fill-in host and MSNBC contributor Ari Melber said. “We have received a number of comments over the past two days, so we are going to play the relevant portion of that testimony in full.”

After playing the unedited video of Heslin’s testimony, Martin Bashir’s fill-in host still did not issue a correction or apology.

“Martin [Bashir] and many others who saw Mr. Heslin’s testimony have called that interruption ‘heckling,’ some disagree. He wanted you to hear it in full so you can draw your own conclusion,” Melber added.

Bashir was out sick on Wednesday. According to previous reports, he has been dealing with some health issues related to a brain tumor. We certainly hope he is in good health.

In the video aired on Bashir’s show Monday, an audience member can be heard shouting, “the Second Amendment shall not be infringed” as Neil Heslin, the father of victim Jesse Lewis, advocates for a ban on semi-automatic rifles. Bashir made it appear as if the father was “heckled” by pro-gun advocates for no reason whatsoever.

However, once the full context of the video became available, it became evident that the so-called “hecklers” were actually responding to a question posed by Heslin. He wanted to know “why anybody in this room needs to have one of these assault-style weapons or military weapons or high-capacity clips.” After pausing, he added,  “Not one person can answer the question,” prompting a couple of audience members to respond.

While some have argued that the audience members were out of line either way for speaking out of turn during the hearing, MSNBC didn’t even give its viewers a chance to make up their own minds by airing such an unfairly edited clip.

An MSNBC source reportedly told The Washington Post that the network was “reviewing the video in question,” TheBlaze’s Madeleine Morgenstern reported.

Its not deceptive editing. they just cut to the part where he was heckled. Thats the story. The story isn’t how long it took for the grieving father to be heckled during his testimony. It’s the fact that he was at all.

Lil Keatie. While I do feel deeply (not really) for your personal emotions on this hot button emotional issue, where a crackpot lefty went nuts and killed the innocent after murdering the one that brought him into your callous world, and committing many crimes in the process. We need honest dialogue that you just don’t seem mature enough for. His first crime was perhaps adopting the leftist stance. The dad asked a question, looked for a response, and got one. It’s clear, lefties need to be removed from any and all firearms as they are just too damn emotional to trust. Same with children. We need new laws to keep the emotional wrecks that are lefties way far away from the children. It’s for the children. Wear a helmet, mark yourself for the public while in public as the emotional wreck you really are. It’s for the children after all. Adopt a propeller for your helmet if you want, it’s still almost a free country.

Absolutely shameful. After viewing al Jazeera in Europe and Washington, DC, I didn’t think that any American television network/news channel could match it for its selective reporting. However, NBC/MSNBC meets and/or exceeds their lack of fairness in its reporting. There’s a pattern here of misinformation that I thought would cease once COMCAST purchased the network from G.E. Instead, it’s only gotten worse.

Yelling out “Second Amendment shall not be infringed” does not really answer the question posed by Mr. Heslin. Numerous print pieces and cable news shows including other MSNBC shows gave the full context of Mr. Heslin’s comments unedited and still called the outburst “Heckling”.

At the most basic level of this argument, all supreme court Justices, even the most conservative ones, who rail against men in black robes making law, agree that the second amendment does not give Americans the right to own any weapon they choose.

ahhh, another Canadian here to poke their nose in business that isn’t theirs…thanks for your insightful POV. However, over here IN AMERICA (the ONLY place where opinions on OUR CONSTITUTION matter) many of us understand that their response was not only completely appropriate for the situation, but also 100% answered the question. We need assault rifle because it IS OUR RIGHT TO OWN ONE.

Why do I “need” to tell you that you are spineless liberal puke? I don’t, but it is my right to do so, and I’m choosing to exercise that right. Those same judges you mentioned, they too understand the true intention for the 2nd amendment (TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT IF IT TURNS TO TYRANNY) and that is the very reason they have created unconstitutional precedent. They know that when we overthrow this tyranny, we will hold THEM accountable for their complicity.

I see. Some have said that we shouldn’t have a law against someone coming to the country simply to have a baby and make it a citizen. However, their argument is that the constitution states that if they are born here then they are citizen. For some reason those same people argue that it is okay make restrictions on the 2nd amendment. How can we pick and choose which laws we will respect? That was all the answer necessary for the question; Who needs an AR-15?

This guy got what he deserved when posed a rhetorical question then decided to add, “nobody in this room can answer that.” That isn’t a tool of making a debate, that is issuing a challenge. Their response was appropriate for the time they had to give it.

We aren’t talking about banning M-16′s, M-4′s or M-249′s, functionally the guns they are talking about banning are very different from actual military weapons. Why do I need a gun like that you ask? The same reasons I own any other kind of gun for, self defense, target shooting, hunting, etc. These weapons, contrary to the popular beliefs of the know-nothing press are exceptionally good at each of those function (depending on what you are hunting, big game, stick to larger rifles) and are highly customizable to the preferences of the user (AR-15, the barbie doll of guns). Now you can tell me, “well you have no practical need for a 30+ round magazine” but that is not necessarily true either, situations where they are useful are rare, but it always is a good measure to be prepared.

Besides, how many criminals use these types of weapons to do their dirty work? Less than 2% according to the UCR. So on the ratio of millions of owners who a law abiding, to a few hundred criminals, you are going to create a law that will turn all those people into outlaws? There’s bad policy, downright stupid policy, and what you’re proposing Canook.

Colin Powell said recently in an interview that the Republican party was too far to the right. Meaning I guess that they rely too much on the constitution. He voted for Obama so I guess that means if the Republican party were to nominate Obama as a Republican then they would be more moderate. I have quite different opinion of the Republican party, they have moved too far to the left. To get farther left than Obama you would have to be Hitler or Stalin.
