The New York newspaper that published interactive maps pinpointing the homes of residents with gun permits has admitted that the records they used included “outdated, inaccurate data.”
The Journal News removed the names and addresses of suburban New York City handgun permit holders from its website two weeks ago after a nearly month-long public outcry, but conceded this weekend that much of the information it published was incorrect to begin with.
“Nobody ever called and verified the address,” resident Mike Smith told the Journal News. Smith was one of many who contacted the newspaper after his home falsely appeared on the map. He determined that his brother-in-law once used his address to apply for a gun back in 1997, before moving out of state.
Of the nearly 17,000 permit holders published for Rockland County, fewer than 4,000 were considered “current,” according to the newspaper. That’s because Rockland, like much of New York, issued permits that didn’t need to be renewed. As a result, the vast majority were considered “historical,” with some even going back to the 1930s, County Clerk Paul Piperato said. Other entries included people who had died, moved away or no longer had guns.
The permit information published for Westchester County fared better, but was still not exact. Until this month, Westchester was one of three counties that required permits be renewed every five years.
The newspaper has defended its decision to publish the information despite vast criticism. When it removed the name and address information earlier this month, replacing it instead with with dots representing the density of gun permits in each county, publisher Janet Hasson said it was “not a concession to critics.”
Instead, Hasson said the information had been up for long enough and was likely to become outdated the longer it remained.
“[T]he database has been public for 27 days and we believe those who wanted to view it have done so already. As well, with the passage of time, the data will become outdated and inaccurate,” Hasson wrote.

Jan. 30, 2013 at 7:00pmThe tragedy cherry picking media once again has demonstrated another “wah wah” moment, distorting events in order to manipulate reactions of the “sheep dull” (people?), another day that clarifies that everyone from Alex Jones to Rush Limbaugh are at times laughing, other times lamenting, trying to wake up as many people that they can, that the media does not care about civil rights, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?
The media joked about Mitt Romney comparing a nightmare regulatory process that wasted a business’s resources and time to the simplicity of ordering a hamburger joint at a restaurant using innovative, efficient technology, and all you environmentalists, all you business owners, all you advertisers, were denied the truth, that Mitt Romney was the real deal?
Sean Hannity reminded me about that Wah Wah moment, and Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Sen Paul and others are the shining lights on the hill, because they want to elevate us all?

Jan. 30, 2013 at 4:39pmSomeone should use the liberal tactics against them and stage a break in. And when the police ask why you did you will say “I targeted the house because of the newspapers gun chart.” (I dont really recommend this)
Sounds like something a liberal would do. Make themselves a victim of something that never really happened.

Jan. 30, 2013 at 3:19pmWhat were they thinking. The release of that map was wrong on every level.
Now the criminals know who have the guns so they can try to steal them.
They know who have the guns so they can avoid being shot.
And they know who DOESN’T have the guns so they know who to victimize.
The really bad part is that now your liberal neighbors know who to call when they are being victimized.

Jan. 30, 2013 at 2:46pmThese liberal idiots are getting creepier and creepier. Clearly this “outdated” garbage is tailored to give some cushioning from accountability for their reactionary and hostile publishing of names and addresses that have resulted in at least two robberies so far that appear to be specifically targeting the guns in the published households.
Someone needs to get a class-action suit together on this rag..the only thing that will shut them up (and others like them) will be by hitting them where they hurt the most, in their bank accounts.

Jan. 30, 2013 at 2:45pmYeah, and some of them weren’t. There have been stories about some of the homes listed on that map being broken into. The only reason the guns were not stolen…responsible gun owners had their weapons locked up in a gun safe. Now imagine if a gun owner had once resided in one of those homes, but had since moved. Perhaps someone’s grandmother was sitting in her chair watching her stories when those thieves came calling. The fact that the organization that produced that map is still in business brings me to the conclusion that a majority of New Yorkers condone its actions. You fools deserve what you get when you reap what you sew. I’ll never set foot in the rotten Apple again as long as I live.

Jan. 30, 2013 at 2:44pmSo, if I’m understanding this…not only did they put out information like this in a completely irresponsible manner putting lawful firearms owners at risk…they may have now put people at risk that potentially don’t even have a firearm in the current residence? Brilliant journalism. You better believe if I was one of the residents in a home that was published as “potentially having a firearm licensee” and someone robbed me as a result, hurt my family, etc as a result of this “journalistic statement” they felt they had to make…I’d be suing this newspaper to the point I would own the place.
