‘Doomsday Prepper’?: Gunman Who Killed Bus Driver and Took a Boy Hostage In Underground Bunker Is Alleged ‘Survivalist’

TheBlaze’s Jonathon M. Seidl contributed to this report.

The bizarre story about an Alabama man who shot and killed a bus driver, abducted a child, hunkered down in an underground bunker and sparked a more than 30-hour (and counting) police standoff continues to take intriguing twists and turns. Among them, people close to the investigation claim that the perpetrator is a “survivalist,” an individual who is prepared with an underground location, food and supplies in case of potential catastrophe.

Jimmy Lee Dykes Is Allegedly a Doomsday Prepper | Alabama Bus Driver Shooting

Heavily armed men move away from the suspects home at the scene of a Dale County hostage scene in Midland City, Ala. on Wednesday Jan. 30, 2013. Authorities were locked in a standoff Wednesday with a gunman authorities say on Tuesday intercepted a school bus, killed the driver, snatched a 6-year-old boy and retreated into a bunker at his home in Alabama. Credit: AP

While police haven’t officially named the suspect, neighbors and sources claim that he is 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes, a retired truck driver and Vietnam veteran who purportedly suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). New-found details about his beliefs and alleged outlook on America, the government and impending disaster are now becoming centerpieces in various media accounts of the dangerous situation at hand.

WFSA-TV is just one outlet that reports that Dykes is purportedly a “doomsday prepper.” As of Thursday morning, this factoid was gaining steam, with media outlets providing little background about the movement that the suspect is being attached to. In addition to claiming that the accused is a potential survivalist, WFSA also reports that the underground bunker he built  – the location he is suspected of keeping the child in — is stocked with food and other essentials.

In addition, some are claiming that Dykes holds anti-American views. However there do not seem to be corroborations or definitive assessments surrounding what, exactly, this means. CNN, among other outlets, has cited Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a liberal group that monitors extremism in America. Potok claims that Dykes has been described as being ”very much standoffish and very much a loner,” but that any attachment to anti-government groups is currently unknown.

In his CNN appearance, the SPLC staffer touched upon preppers, claiming that, ”survivalism has been associated with the far right in this country for many years.” That said, Potok refrained from making sweeping generalizations about the movement being tied to any sort of violence or criminal activity.

“Certainly most preppers are not going to kill anyone or [conduct] any criminal violence,” he told host Anderson Cooper.

Watch Potok discuss survivalism and the suspect’s potential beliefs, below:

This isn’t the first time the “prepper” movement has been included in a tragedy. After the Newtown massacre, many were quick to point out that the mother of gunman Adam Lanza was focused on being prepared.

“It’s just brutal right now,” Phil Burns, co-founder of the American Preppers Network, told TheBlaze in an exclusive interview at the time. “I have a community to look out for and to protect. This is my passion and I don’t like seeing it demonized.”

“Preppers’ are being used as a scapegoat right now,” he added.

As he explained at the time, “preppers” can be a misleading term since there are really three categories: survivalists, doomsday preppers and conspiratorial preppers.

As for the incident itself, neighbor Mike Creel spoke with students on the bus and painted a shocking picture of the scenario that began earlier this week. Dykes allegedly boarded a school bus and killed the driver, managing to leave with one child who had fainted during the incident. Creel says the suspect then “retreated back onto his land” and hid himself — and the child — in “his homemade bomb shelter.” According to the neighbor, the bunker was one of the first things that Dyke started building two years ago when he moved onto the land.

Since Tuesday, the unnamed, 6-year-old child has been underground with the alleged captor. While the situation is still being described as “static,” the young boy is said to be okay. Authorities were reportedly able to get essential medication to him (New York Magazine reports that the medications he takes are for ADHD and Asperger’s syndrome).

At the bottom of the story it states that he is on medication for ADHD. Many of those medications cause suicidal or homicidal tendancies. I have a 10 year old nephew on some of those and he tried to hang himself. He had never done anything like that before the meds. To me this medication is a major flag in this story.

After all, the SPLC personally knows every prepper in the world and exactly how they think. And we know the SPLC has only our best interests at heart, is all for preservation of life, liberty and the persuit of happiness and surely wants us able to defend ourselves when we need to.

They’ve been pushing this agenda for 30 years, and is the reason most people quit labeling themselves ‘survivalist’. Because if you mentioned you wanted to prepare for a disaster, or an apocalypse, or just a 3 week long power outage you were lumped in with whack jobs that wanted to break away from the government and destroy the world. People shy from the new label ‘prepper’ even though if your a practicing mormon, and their are a lot of them, you’re supposed to have at least a year of food in your storage. But if you told anyone, oh my god, its a prepper survivalist, shun them…
I once saw a ridiculous childrens book put out in the 90s that showed a kid exploring some random cave in the woods and ran into ammo laying on the floor, to which the book extolled how preppers just throw their stuff in random holes and might come kill you if you find them. This whole subject gets wierd attention it does not deserve.

Yeah I agree with you. Then again I live in an area where most prepare for power outages and weather related problems. We have never refered to ourselves as preppers.Simply citizens with common sense.
By the way at least here if they were to lump us all in together many officers and court officials along with many on city council would have the label attached to them as well.It wouldn’t stop them from gardening nor preparing for weather related problems.Somehow I don’t think they would stop the normal citizen from doing so either.
This is just another attempt at internal destruction. This will be used as all the rest were. Its truly pathetic how far they will go to advance a dead and dieing cause.

Liberals use these sorts of falacious arguments constantly in order to further their agenda. The media never seems to call them out. This guy has some very serious issues. The fact that he stores food, owns guns, has an underground bunker, is is tall or short; has blue eyes or brown has absolutely no bearing on his actions. From his behavior he is likely paranoid schizophrenic (and yes I have the training and background to say that) and his behavior was certainly known to the community. can we lock up every person that is paranoid schizophrenic, a sociopath or a psychopath? Most unlikely. Can we force them to obtain treatment and/or take medication? No and I would not want to see that either. Answer: I don’t have one.

On September 26, 2006, President Bush urged Congress to consider revising federal laws so that U.S. armed forces could restore public order and enforce laws in the aftermath of a …, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition. These changes were included in the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 (H.R. 5122), which was signed into law on October 17, 2006.

In 2008, these changes in the Insurrection Act of 1807 were repealed in their entirety, reverting to the previous wording of the Insurrection Act[7] that in its original form was written to limit Presidential power as much as possible in the event of insurrection, rebellion, or lawlessness.

Local news reports the boy is fine. He is watching TV, getting food, coloring books. While this is a bad situation it is certainly made worse by the media rush for viewers and sensationalism. The media and the government will exploit this as they do everything for their own agenda. If we got rid of the 24/hr news cycle and 90% of government we would have a chance.

Even if he surrenders, they will murder him anyway. Just for the fun of it and/or to make a psy-op out of it. So they can paint him as a conservative, even though he might be a prog. Since he will be smoked, it will be their version that we get, not the dead mans. They will not let this crisis go to waste, they will use it to smear us all. And by the way, did you get a load of the SWAT goons? You would think they were going on a 3 week mission into the jungles of Ecuador with all that crap and gear. Can you just imagine how cowardly they would be if they didn’t have all that body armor and 10 guys backing them up? All to defend against a 65 year old goat? Pffffttt….

Sorry but he has a point. If the guy is paranoid sending that amount of firepower may not be the best answer. You forget most military and their children have little trust in civilian law enforcement. They see them as a ticket for the enemy to use.[They are right too in many cases-the enemy sends backscattered lies to harrass and torture their targets through the use of cops medical systems exc] It might be better to have them stand down and have someone he does trust deal with the situation.Sometimes one trusted person can get more accomplished than a whole slew of untrusted people.
Well that is if they really are trying to save the childs life and not simply using the tragedy for their own purposes.

This is what you must know:

You’re right, of corse, this man is a hero, a patriot. He deserves our respect. And if I were part of that bus driver’s family, I’d already be collecting donations for his defense fund and / or his funeral. How about you, would you like to make a contribution?

Classic projection. You see, when a prog does not know what sex he is himself or goes both ways, he cannot discern the gender of another very easily. Thus the ambiguity in his address. It is so.

So, we have one guy holding a hostage in a bunker. And we have, what, about 150 cops and SWAT creeps running around? Little bit of overkill don’t you think? Yep, lets pull every single last goon with a badge away from protecting the rest of the county so they can enter the lottery to see who gets to plug the guy. What a joke. Who makes these decisions anyway?

Its really to show the rest of us how they will respond…esp when the guy is a socalled prepper.

These things happen all the time around this country, the local SAWT team and a handful of officers are usually on site because this is more important than collecting revenue through victimless crimes ie traffic citations. Ruby Ridge was a perfect example of overkill by the government.

“What is the opposite of a prepper? A welfare recipient? Which of the two commit more crimes involving guns?”

This is the most insightful, funny, and all around most awesome post I have seen in a long, long, time! Bravo to THEGREATSOCIETY. I am still waiting to hear what relationship this “prepper” (whatever the H3LL that is) has to the kidnappee. My money is on the child is HIS CHILD who was lost in a custody hearing. THAT IS WHY NO INFORMATION IS FORTHCOMING FROM OFFICIAL CHANNELS! If we all heard that this man was kidnapping his OWN KID, we would all BE SCREAMING FOR THE BIG TOUGH SOLDIERS TO BACK DOWN AND LEAVE HIM ALONE! But, I don’t honestly know. Still could be some total pervert who has kidnapped a random kid and is doing horrible things to him, BUT it is interesting that we STILL HAVEN’T SEEN THE PARENTS ANYWHERE!

Anyway, I am so glad that POTOK is out running his mouth about my fellow whites. You see WHiT3Y, this all fits into the scenario outlined by the GENIUS Kevin MacDonald in “Culture of Critique”. If you are truly a “free thinker” I dare you to read it. On the bright side, all these coincidental “random” acts of gun violence are making many of you “rational” people finally see the light. Know the tune to “Brother John”?

      Project Monarch, Project Monarch,
It is real. It is real.

Stockpiling food and supplies now will be banned because it makes you dangerous.

All these “things” that do all these terrible things to us must be controlled by the only ones capable, the government of course.

Danger Will Robinson!! Now its time to register underground shelters and stocks of food and water in addition to guns… and anyone have one can’t have the other! ‘Prepper’ shows will be pulled from TV, or lists of viewers will be monitored, don’t think your satellite box can keep track of that?? guess again! No more interstate shipping of dehydrated food, and background checks needed for transfering extra vegitables from your garden to your neighbors and for purchase of canning jars or lids!! and heaven forbid you try to buy a large capacity lid dispenser or bulk boxes of lids!!!

While the situation may be static, I see plenty of paras – paramilitarized internal security – on the clock.

When the rabbit goes in his hole, you put Barney Fife on it, with one round, to minimize “collateral damage” to the hostage. Remember Waco, remember Ruby Ridge, remember Lon Horiuchi.

This situation is obviously another “mental illness” case and many Vietnam Vets remain untreated since the war either drinking or drugging themselves to death. But, once again, they will make it about guns instead of mental illness. Geez. Can’t wait for all the media flummoxing on this especially that spineless toady Piers Morgan.
