Scroll down for an update to this story including testimony from the fired server:
–
Well, it looks like there have been some major developments in that “I give God 10%” receipt story: The alleged “pastor” is real and the server who posted the photo has been fired.
A photo posted to Reddit on Tuesday by a user named “GateFlan,” who claims to be a St. Louis-area server, shows how an alleged “pastor” reacted to the restaurant’s automatic gratuity policy:
“I give God 10% — why do you get 18?” the customer wrote on the receipt, signing it “Pastor [redacted].”
“My mistake sir, I’m sure Jesus will pay for my rent and groceries,” the Reddit user posted along with the above photo.
The “pastor,” who had the server separate the bill for the group’s 20 members, was reportedly unhappy that the restaurant included an automatic gratuity of 18 percent on the party’s bill.
When we first reported this story, we cautioned that the photo might be part of a hoax designed to stir up some sort of anti-Christian, anti-religious sentiment (as people have pulled similar cons in the past). But it turns out the story is authentic. The pastor is very much a real person, she very much left a “snide” comment on her Applebee’s receipt, she very much complained to management about the Reddit photo, and the waitress is now very much unemployed.
“A pastor says when she left a snide comment on a receipt, she did use bad judgement, but she did leave a tip,” a Fox News affiliate in St. Louis reports
“My heart is really broken,” said Pastor Alois Bell. “I’ve brought embarrassment to my church and ministry.”
The 37-year-old pastor explains herself: “What [the photo] didn’t show is the money that I left and that we all left on the table.”
Pastor Bell claims she left $6.29 on the table and her credit card was also charged the tip amount. She also says everyone in the party left cash tips.
“I’ve actually been harassed because of this and it doesn’t tell the whole story,” said Pastor Bell, adding that although her comment may have been in poor taste, she and her ministry do good work in the community and “would never want to tarnish the light of Christianity.”
And what of the Reddit user who posted the photo?
Pastor Bell said she called up the Applebee’s to complain about the “dissemination of her receipt,” as the Smoking Gun puts it, and was told in a follow-up conversation that the waitress was “immediately terminated” by management.
UPDATE — The Reddit user, Chelsea, tells the Consumerist a little more about the situation:
“I originally posted the note as a lighthearted joke,” says Chelsea, who was dismissed from her job at Applebee’s on Wednesday, as the story began to spread across the Internet. “I thought the note was insulting, but it was also comical. I posted it to Reddit because I thought other users would find it entertaining.”
Chelsea tells Consumerist that the receipt was actually not even for her table. Rather, the server on the receiving end of the note showed it to Chelsea, who snapped a photo of it later that night.
But wait! There’s more [emphasis added]:
Some time on Wednesday, Chelsea says the customer who had left the receipt contacted her Applebee’s location, demanding that everyone be fired, from the servers involved to the managers.
Seriously?
“We make $3.50 an hour. Most of my paychecks are less than pocket change because I have to pay taxes on the tips I make,” Chelsea said, explaining why Pastor Bell’s note got her so hot under the collar. “After sharing my tips with hosts, bussers, and bartenders, I make less than $9/hr on average, before taxes.”
“I am expected to portray a canned personality that has been found to be least offensive to the greatest amount of people,” she adds. “I come home exhausted, sore, burnt, dirty, and blistered on a good day. And after all that, I can be fired for ‘embarrassing’ someone who directly insults their server on religious grounds.”
For its part, Applebee’s has released the following statement:
Our Guests’ personal information – including their meal check – is private, and neither Applebee’s nor its franchisees have a right to share this information publicly. We value our Guests’ trust above all else. Our franchisee has apologized to the Guest and has taken disciplinary action with the Team Member for violating their Guest’s right to privacy. This individual is no longer employed by the franchisee.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 12:06pmI have never waited tables, maybe because it looks so hard. I always try to leave a good tip, these people deserve it. Not everyone makes a good waitress, but everyone that tries deserves a good tip. They put themselves out there and are pretty much at the mercy of a sometimes rude and unappreciative public. I think the note was quite a put down. I think Christ would be glad that someone would give, with a good heart, without judging the reciever as “unworthy.”

Feb. 1, 2013 at 12:46pmBig groups demand a great deal of a server’s attention and that’s a very good reason there’s an 18% MANDATORY gratuity on groups of 8 or more.
I have zilcho sympathy for the “Pastor” (is anyone else annoyed at how she wrote “Pastor” on the receipt like Pastors are somehow exempted from tipping?). And I am highly skeptical that she left “$6.29″ on the table. If you’re going to pay the tip, why not just leave it on the card like it already was? Sorry that doesn’t add up.
What a childish lie. Pastor indeed!

Feb. 1, 2013 at 12:50pmUnless you are accusing the rude patron of also being a liar, she did leave a 20% tip in cash. She was also charged the tip amount, so she gave 40%. If the gratuity is mandatory, it’s not really a gratuity. Kind of like how using the tax code to force people to support the less fortunate isn’t charity.
Writing that comment was rude. Showing the world the comment is also rude. Both lost something. The pastor lost prestige and the cost of the tip. The server lost her job.

But they do like showing off their 2-300 dollar hats.

They don’t come here any more and all the restaurants are thrilled about it.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 11:23pmI call BS on that. I worked at Service Stations in the middle of blizzards and rainstorms and heat spells pumping gas for ungrateful jerks who wanted a bucks worth of gas and then I was asked to check their tires, battery, radiator, oil, trans fluid, and brake fluid. In the summer we had to wash every window on a car if nobody else had pulled in at the same time, or at minimum wash the front and rear windows. That was in the 60′s and 70′s, and NOT ONCE did any of us get a tip! Yet some candy a$$ working in an air conditioned room putting plates on a table wants a tip. Forget it! They don’t work any harder than the rest of the minimum wage workers who get no tip, so why do they deserve it? Just to keep them from spitting in your food? BS, I know all kinds of jobs where people work twice as hard for minimum wage and get no tips. I say, if they did a GREAT job, worth giving them something for their extra positive attitude and work ethic then fine, I will tip them, but not otherwise.

You being a server are already being paid to serve the food. People give what they can afford, NOT by some arbitrary system of percentage. Nobody put a gun to your head and said you have to work as a waiter. Don’t like the pay, then get a different job. Otherwise, know your role and shut your hole.

I never dared to think that I deserved a tip. If I received one it was for doing my required job above and beyond what my customer’s thought they deserved. So when a tip was received it was appreciated and NEVER EXPECTED.
By the way, putting the customers first and providing the best service possible did allow me to receive many a tip for my assistance to them. So understand this… IF today’s younger generation would have the work ethics that I grew up with and put the customer above their expected entitlement maybe they would actually gain something besides the tip they demand… Self pride of accomplishment in a job well done serving others instead of expecting the world on a silver platter.

Cheapskate! It’s common knowledge that servers despise working the sunday church crowd because of similiar cheapskate attitude. Never once is it mentioned the server provided less than stellar service. Feb. 2, 2013 at 10:57amRIGHTOFWAYNE, Servers do not make minimum wage, they make $2.50 an hour, they rely on tips for their income. And times must have been different then because people tip at service stations, at least from the 90′s on and presently at the few that are out there. Servers do work hard, there are many minimum wage jobs that are easier and some that are harder. Waitresses deal with so much crap it’s not even funny. In addition to that, taxes have to be paid on a percentage of the sales, so if people don’t tip, the waitress loses money. Not to mention all the people they have to tip out like bussers, bartenders, sometimes hosts, etc. So yeah, if the server is doing their job properly they should absolutely get a tip, otherwise don’t waste their time, cost them money, and take up a table that could otherwise bring in some income. Making $2.50/hr, they need the tips!

Feb. 2, 2013 at 8:11pmAs a Christian, I am always amazed at how cheap my fellow Christians often are. Twio of my children, raised in the church, were servers when young and hated working the Sunday after-church-for-brunch-bunch. They said the customers were usually in large groups, many had special dietary needs or things for their kids. And if their food wasn’t to their satisfaction, they would not tip the server, no matter how goods the service was.
My wife and I make it a point when we’re out to tip a bare minimum of 20%, unless the service is awful. Sometimes we’ll tip 30 or 40% and write “God loves You” on the ticket. It is fun for us to use what God has blessed us with to bless others.

That said, she never, ever, left a restaurant without a large tip. She passed that down to her kids and grandkids by making us aware what waitresses make.
Last I checked, here in Florida they get paid around $2 an hour because the tips make up the difference of whatever the hourly is.
Folks, even if she gives bad service, always leave something. Doesn;t have to be much, but something.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:30pmActually I don’t think she should have been fired either. I believe that the server should have been provided the opportunity to correct her actions and keep her job, thus saving the public coffers another leach. HAd I been the manager, the young server would have been told she had the offer write an apology to the pastor, attend 4 Saturday outreach ministries at the church to help out and been placed on the slowest schedule for 4 weeks, or her other option would have been to quit. Best of both world’s the server learns that there are real life consequences to his or her actions and if he or she chose to quit they don’t have the standing to sue or draw unemployment benefits (at least not here in Texas).

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:33pmWhy should large tips be normal?
I thought tips were 10% to 15%. Why should 20 people in a group pay more in tips than 10 couples? Are more meals served? Is it harder to take orders?
If tips can be up to 25%, why not make them 50% or 100%?
Why have tips? We are moving into a new reality. Obamacare. Just give a straight wage or salary.

Yes it IS harder. MUCH HARDER to take care of a party of 20 vs. 10 tables of a party of 2. You don’t have 10 tables at a time, most restaurants are 3-6/7 tables max. This is so the server can provide better service to each table. Some servers though can’t even handle 3 tables :(
Also, most places require more than one server if there is a large party. So that 18% is being split between 2 servers right from the start. Then they need to tip out the other employees like bartender, busser and hosts.
I think EVERYONE should be required to have a customer service/public job such as a server before they graduate high school. Make it an internship type thing. People would stop being so stupid to others if this was required. Both parties were in the wrong. Wrong of a Christian to write something like that, and wrong of the employee for posting something personal like that with the name online! Shame on both of them.

The waitress didn’t need to show the receipt online, but then the pastor started it. Never mind that she and other’s left money on the table, she did NOT need to write the obnoxious comment, especially being a pastor, signing her name, and knowing someone could raise an issue using it.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 5:41pmAs a former waiter (1966-1969), the reason an automatic tip is added is because the server generally has their service area reduced since they spend their time on a large group.
The way it works is a server has an area which is their’s. The tips they earn are based on the service they provide in that area. Large groups move slower than small groups which means the server is not making as much as they could. On top of that, servers often have to share their tips with the cooks. Finally, with their area reduced other servers pick up the area and get the tips.

I wish I had it & any Dear Abbey columns pertaining to tips. Third, getting into a shouting match or fist fight in a restaurant is not conducive to one’s staying out of jail, etc. Fourth, I don’t eat out much. If 20% is considered the norm, then I’ll have to eat out less. Fifth judging from other countries (& how they tip) that have socialized medicine maybe when Obamacare is fully implemented people will tip less to be in line with socialist European countries. Sixth, maybe we can look at this whole tipping thing from the standpoint of psychology & use some computer modeling to see what tips & wagers would bring in under different conditions.

For me though, my family and I usually tip based on service (The best service we had ‘was’ at Applebees several years ago and we tiped I think it was almost 24%, and that waiter that we had we ask for every now and then when they are working). Tips shoulds NEVER be a requirement, after all, that is why they are called TIPS, you are giving extra money if you feel the service was good. It’s no longer a tip if it’s required.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 1:43pmI don’t think ANY of you read the story. The server (waitress) who served the pastor was NOT the one fired. The person fired was another waitress who snapped a picture of the receipt and posted it on the internet. Anyone who has had their personal information hijacked will attest that you are putting people at risk when you post ANY information like this on the internet. When you bring in large groups and the restaurant has a policy on gratuities – you are unfortunately subject to their terms. That said, I always try to leave CASH tips – because I know (done it) waiters/waitresses have tough jobs, and it can be tough to earn a decent wage without taxes being deducted, and knowing you usually (not all restaurants) have to payout tips to others in the business, including bus boys, sometimes bar staff (who earn the most), and kitchen staff. Tip 20% when you can or more when you can and on small checks, less on larger checks (over $ 100.00) – but it is your choice based on SERVICE quality provided. If you feel you need to tip less than 10% though – complain to management. There is something wrong.

Why would someone be required to pay for other waitresses, bartender and other employees, who have done exactly zero for the customer in question? I am glad the lady called them out on it. Restaurant owners should not expect or be allowed to force customers, in addition to paying for their inflated meal, also pay for their help. This is especially true in the case of a large chain like Applebee. This also happen to us and we have not been i Applebee since then. It is up to the individual, whether they want or don’t want to give a gratuity, not management or the server.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 6:41pmI totally agree with you about the shame of a STINGY and VENGEFUL “pastor”. I also agree with Applebee’s decision to fire the employee who breached the client’s privacy. That employee obviously did not have the best interests of the franchise owner at heart, and jeopardized their own job by acting in such an unseemly manner. Customer relations is a tricky business. Losing customer confidence is death to a business.

And here is my take from my personal view of working at a night club for many years.
Black men Love love love white women…….. ” Where all da white women at!!” quote from Blazin Saddles.
Black women hate white women for this fact, and I have met quite a few young black women lately and Yes they are single moms with no means of male support.
So there you go if you are a waitress and that is the explanation of why you get stiffed on a tip.
But mostly older women are some times jealous of younger ones and really jealous if they think they man might “hit” that.
This is something NBC will never and I mean ever talk about…..But the problem here is not with the white woman, but the problem here is responsibility in a relationship.

Also, if she was embarassed about her actions then why did she call the restaurant and get the waitress fired? Its okay to be rude and snarky, but only if its in secret and only offending the person who is serving your food, because a waitress is beneath you. Jan. 31, 2013 at 4:47pmAmen, brother. Posting the receipt was wrong, but as a pastor, what happened to the virtue of forgiveness? I have three kids who have worked in restaurants and they have a whole host of stories about those most difficult customers being the ones who won’t leave a tip regardless of how hard they have tried to please. It is standard procedure for an automatic gratuity to be added for a large party because, yes, it is significantly harder to deliver twenty hot meals simultaneously and I’m bettin’ when that group of 20 arrived, they were informed of that policy. I have never dined out with a large group where the server hasn’t made that distinction right from the start. Argue all you want with the whole idea of tipping but until that trend changes, it is what it is. The people who whine about tipping are also the ones who will whine when menu prices skyrocket when tipping is done away with. You don’t want to tip? Then go to McDonalds.

Feb. 2, 2013 at 3:29amFirst, the Pastor was wrong by equating tithing to God with tipping a food server, I think that attitude is disrespectful to God. Second, the Pastor wrote that stupid comment on the receipt, knowing that it could be used to make Christians look bad. Lastly, the Pastor is on the cheap side, I worked in the food industry through my twenties and it is hard work, especially serving large groups. One of the worst nightmares is having the large group order on one ticket and then change their mind and demand separate tickets; those types usually leave a lousy tip after running you ragged.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:53pmIt is based on how much income the IRS thinks you should have been tipped. If you make more in cash tips then you could be pulling one over on the feds, but if you go under you still pay the same in taxes. They also use sheets were you are supposed to fill in how much you make each night total in tips, so the days you do go over the IRS estimation you can pay more.

Yet if you hear about a CEO pulling in $10M, I’m pretty sure you’d be shooting smoke out your ears to hear that they used a LEGAL “Loophole” to shield part of THEIR income. Note the two differences:
1) Loopholes though unpopular (you get it and I don’t) are LEGAL
2) NOT reporting your TIPS is ILLEGAL
Yet most people will excuse the waitress for breaking the law and condemn the CEO for using parts of the law that others can’t. The real difference is one person gets more than the other.
Look inside yourself and ask yourself if it’s just jealousy.
Personally, I think EVERYBODY should pay their taxes. I also believe that the taxes are confiscatory and need to be dialed way back along with government interference in our daily lives. I also reject the common idea that it’s OK to break the law if you’re “poor” as that leads to a slippery slope where nobody feels that THEY have to pay anything.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 3:06pmWaiter and waitresses, oops I mean servers…. are required to pay 18% of thier TOTAL SALES in taxes even if they get shanked they still are taxed on that figure. A quick fyi for whomever said 10-15% was enough, its not 1990 anymore. The standard has gone up. The standard tipping procedure is 18%. And most restaurants add 18% gratuity to party’s of six or more. It is standard operating procedure. The fact that the government taxes them 18% is the reason the standard tip is now 18%. If you tip 10-15% they are going to lose money as most servers make $2.89 per hour at least in Rhode Island, their checks are $0.00. The only money they make is on tips. So if you cannot tip properly dont go out to eat! this is how they pay their bills. As far as getting paid a wage, most small outfits would go out of business, they simply cant afford it. A lot of big hotels do pay a wage for banquet servers but as I said smaller outfits cannot absorb the cost.

How is that right? Of course, these tax frauds are hurting themselves by doing this. because the social security checks these frauders receive will be smaller because the government will think they made less than they actually did …. so I guess you get what you get when you engage in fraudulent behavior.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 5:20pmI think it’s funny when restaurants have this mandatory tip policy.
I bussed tables and washed dishes for a while, and it sucked. I cleaned toilets and took out the trash and did all that crap. I owned a bar, and did everything involved there, plus cooking.
I leave GOOD tips, when service is adequate. I’ve been known to tip 50-100%, if the service is exceptional. I keep my surroundings orderly, and pick up messes, because I remember how it was.
When I see a mandatory tip, I leave NOTHING extra. NOT A DAMNED PENNY.
By buying the food, I have voluntarily entered into a transaction with the restaurant. I can deal with that. Forcing me to pay a gratuity, though… I might pay the extra to eat the food, but at that point, I am paying NOTHING for the tip, and I do not feel that I need to go out of my way to be tidy.

A tip, for your information, is a ‘gratuity’ not a requirement, you tip what you want, it’s yours to do with what you want!
You are brainwashed, uninformed, and babbling about what you feel rather than what actually is.
A restaurant that ‘charges’ a tip from a credit card is disingenuous at best, greedy and taking advantage of a flawed system for THEIR benefit at the worst. Just like there is NO collective salvation, no ‘collective’ charity unless it is willfully given, not taken. You should learn the meaning of actual words, not the ‘politically correct’ allowances offered by elitist, wicked, politicians, lawyers, and judges.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:10pmThe first time I was confronted with a ‘mandatory’ tip, was in Vegas about 25yrs ago. I’ve not forgotten it because it was extraordinary – 18% tagged on to the bill AFTER our party had left tips on the table. I demanded to know what the 18% tip was for, and when told, I said “Well if that’s for the waiter, who gets the tip on the table?!?”
“Sir, we’re sorry. We’ll take this off your bill…yadayadayada” and we never went back.
At the very LEAST, these restaurants should let their customers know in advance that they charge a tip, and how much. THAT way, I can CHOOSE to go to such a restaurant, or to one that DOESN’T automatically tag on a tip, and pay a tip reciprocal to the service I/we get.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:27pmThey do. If you read the menu it will say “18% gratuity added on parties of 8 or more.” It’s really a no brainer, just don’t leave a cash tip too, unless you think the server deserves more. The reason they do it is because on large party tables, the server can’t serve as many other people and has to run around on the whim of the guests who inevitably don’t order ancillary items at the same time (side of ranch, another beer, etc.).

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:34pmI’m sorry but I find that very hard to believe. Now, if the one complaining is an athiest and hates Christians, I can see why this was said.
I tip 20-30% just to be nice, if they are exceptional or even conversation nice, its 50%. If they are rude to anyone at the table or smug, its 0% and then I let the resturant know why. And YES, I have had many that turn rude after we say grace before we eat. (No we dont flare it out either LOL)
But most people that I do bring out to eat DONT usually go out for the daily cost is extreme or it just doesnt make sense… “Why spend $25 for 3-4 people to eat a meal when you can buy better stuff for your own table?”
So if they only give 1-3 bucks instead of the expected 4-5 for a 20 dollar table. They forgot to look at what I put on the receipt (20-50%) and again, if they are bored, lethargic or rude and opinionated, its a 0% tip but I always explain why to the establishment. I have only done it a few times but my party agrees that it was worth complaining about.
Sorry, but I have been surprised on how many table servers there are that dont deserve a dime for a tip that actually work in resturants.
My tips reflect their effort. Exception: if they are amazingly busy and all they have time is enough to check up and make sure we have everything we need, its a 20% tip. The fact they remember in the middle of chaos is worth recognizing.

Good on you for tipping well. I do the same. What I hear from servers, is that we are the exception, and not the rule. I’m guessing that’s why this story has any traction at all.
Courtesy and generousity should be earmarks of a person’s faith. Whether in the form of a tip at a restaurant, holding the door for others, returning shopping carts to the stall, etc.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 10:29amAs Christians we are NOT supposed to work on the Sabbath (unless of course it involves working to help someone in immediate need), when you go ‘shopping’ or ‘dining’ on the Sabbath you are NOT honoring the Sabbath because your actions ARE causing others to work on your behalf, thus causing them to break that commandment, “Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy” (what’s worse, sinning yourself or causing others to sin by your sinful example?).
Understanding and implementing correctly the scriptures goes a long way…
Also, for the judging hypocrites on this site, one action does not define your Christianity, no Christian is perfect, and one Christian’s misdeeds over another, or error of judgement does NOT define Christians as a whole. It really is simple for all you self-proclaimed atheists…listen and learn, if a Christian does not follow the CLEARLY STATED message of Christ, then by definition he/ her is NOT a Christian, you will know them by their deeds, not words, not what they say they believe all the while going from one sin to the next.

I am Catholic because it is the church started by Christ Jesus this is supported by over 9000 scriptures verses and comentarys dating back over 2000 years. All other faiths started after this were because men disagreed. I am in no way trying to say there were no posers and fakes in the Catholic Church, but I am saying that they were men and must be separated from the churches true values. We as individuals must call them out where ever they are, when we do not we end up where we are today.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 1:59pmThat waitress was right to a rebutle. It sounds to me That paster practices the art of being a muk-e-muk, and is really a wqist of a good pastors position. that waitress should get her job back with back pay and estimated tips. Far to far people take positions of responcibility and then think people owe them.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 1:58pmIt’s been some years since I’ve had to patronize an Applebees. I stopped for their apparent server lifestyles – pierced, tattooed, poorly spoken and self-absorbed. I’ll let others recommend the alternatives that are out there.
I will not give custom to a restaurant/fast food joint that bars legally armed citizens. MOLON LABE Fly Lord of Lies.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:23pmPlease stop lumping people with piercings and tattoos into some bad, low-life, self absorbed category.
Just think about all the service men and women alone that get tattoos for many reasons like remembering their fallen friends etc.
Tattoos AND piercings actually go back to pretty much the beginning of man. They can be deeply religious and cultural so lumping them in with today’s wasted ignorant youth and fringe elements is just down right wrong. Please stop?
I’m sure people of faith wouldn’t want to be lumped in with Cults or Westburo Baptist?
More importantly ….. these tatted and pierced people you speak of would probably be libertarian if they had any clue and weren’t lied to, brainwashed, and pandered to regularly.
You would probably help your country more by engaging these people in conversation rather than shunning them because of appearance.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:29pmFrom what I understand, and this might vary from establishment to establishment. They don’t want open carry in their restaurants because it might make hoplophobic customers uneasy, but they ask that you conceal your firearm while in the restaurant. If true, that is acceptable to me. I haven’t looked at or eaten at applebees in many many years, so this might all be hearsay.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 1:57pmLMAO.
This is one of the few instances of complete justice on the internet.
All parties involved got EXACTLY what they deserved.
■ The server trying to publicly humiliate a patron online gets canned.
■ The Pastor being a smart@ss and condescending gets heckled and shamed.
LESSON: Keep your personal junk to yourself.
Outstanding.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 2:29amAgree! The “so-called” Pastor should have never written that note on her bill. The waitress should have never published personal information on the internet. Two wrongs don’t make a right. But then to make matters worse, now the waitress instead of accepting responsibility for her wrongful actions, she is attempting to justify her actions by saying she was mad and she only makes about $9.00 an hour. It wasn’t even her table!!!!!. Accept responsibility and the consequences for your actions. The Pastor doesn’t get a pass either. She should have acted more responsibly and not “holier than thou”. The waitress should have been fired and the Pastor needs to implement and work in the Soup Kitchen in the church!

Jan. 31, 2013 at 1:56pmIf she left a tip, I bet it wasn’t any more than a dollar. My daughters have been servers and tell how certain groups of people come in, run up big bills while demanding special service and walk out either leaving 1 dollar or nothing at all.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:26pmAgain READ the Article and LOOK at the picture. The Woman left $6.29 tip based on the 18% tip. It might been scribble on but it is STILL there. READ “Adtl Tip” Meaning “do you want to give more than the 18% we already put on your bill?”
She put a “ZERO”
Pastor was dumb enough to put a snide comment on a receipt. Heck the service could been awful.
The Server was dumb enough to post it on the internet, do something stupid and get fired from your job. It is not rocket science.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:48pmAdfoam, read the article and look at the photo. The food total was $34.93, with a $6.29 tip added. The “pastor” crossed out the tip amount, wrote in “0″ instead and totalled out the tab at $34.93.
$34.93 minus $34.93 is zero, not $6.29. The woman paid no tip on the tab, and I doubt she paid the tip in cash as she says. I leave cash tips all the time so the waitress won’t have to report it, and I never get complaints.
It is math such as you leftists employ that has our country in such a dire state of affairs.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 1:55pmHere’s a tip preacher. It’s a facebook, youtube, twitter world. Think twice before you do anything out of frustration. It will come back to haunt you. I completely understand her frustration but anyone who eats out regularly knows large groups always have an automatic tip added. The employee was out of line for posting the receipt so at least the Applebees took appropriate action. I’d like to know which Applebees that was so I could go eat there and thank them for maintaining a professional work environment.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 5:29pmwasn’t surprised when saw it was a black “pastor” not wanting to tip & i’d bet a months pay she doesn’t give 10% to God.
back in the day a group of us young single (well paid) engineers would get together every sunday for dinner at outback steakhouse & we’d split the bill & every week we’d be SHORT ON THE TIP so i’d kick in extra to make sure the waitress was taken care of
finally one week had enough & said alright what’s going on here there’s five of us & we’re always short on cash for the bill. turns out there was one engineer, that was black (coincidentally) that was just paying for his food and not tipping
so confronted him about it & he said they don’t need a tip they’re getting paid enough. maybe he was a “pastor” too? lol
so told him from now on we’re doing separate bills & he ought to be ashamed of himself waitresses work hard & they need tip money to pay their bills. he just shrugged & said whatever
i’ve had several girlfriends that were waitresses & they told me horror stories of black customers not tipping. one of them was a waitress at a club that had bands & she refused to work when she knew it was going to be a black crowd. they wouldn’t tip, they were incredibly rude, & the police usually had to show up
a couple of times she came home crying from having been pinched, groped, verbally abused, & not tipped for the night so she said enough is enough no more i won’t work fire me if you want to.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:27pmminimum wage in the US is around 7,25/hour. Minimum wage for tipped labor (servers, etc.) is only around 2,15/hour. This is why servers get grumpy when cheapskates leave a bunch of pennies on the table.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:48pmThen earn it.
I came for the food the service is up to establishment.
I tip based on performance, I dont care how blue people get in the face insisting that its required, I PAY FOR PERFORMANCE, act like an ass, get paid like one. I’m only there for 30-45 mins your telling me they cant be friendly and smile and say have a nice day and ask if I need something with my meal and make me feel welcome?
I’ll go where I “feel” welcome and I’ll go where the service is exceptional.
There is good reason why some resturants go belly up.
1) Food
2) Service
and the two go hand in hand.
Imagaine a bored, sighing waitress at Hooters? Cant? Guess why not.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 3:13pmLel2007- where have you been? I’m over 50 now, but when I worked as a bellhop in college, I made LESS than minimum wage because there was an automatic expectation that I would earn tips.
I didn’t like it. Still don’t. And I was as shocked as you to learn about this.
But this has been standard operating proceedure for a LOOOONNNNG time.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 1:54pmBut, I digress: I resent a restaurant adding an automatic tip, but usually they only do it if it’s printed on the menu or elsewhere that the tip is included if there are more than 6 people. Still, it’s my choice and I don’t like being told what I have to tip, it’s my decision only.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 1:50pmAll this did was make Christians look like cheap-skates. The last time I ate out at Red Lobster, my bill came to $12.90. I left a tip of $4.10 to round it off to $17. This over 30%, but if you’re going to eat out, do the right thing and tip at least 15% to 20% or eat at home or go to a drive through.

We have heard it said that most waitresses and waiters say Sunday after church is finished is the worst time for tippers. C’mon people…step it up a notch. You will like it better and they will too.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:26pmI don’t give anyone a tip with a “minimum”. The server must smile and fill my coffee cup to get a tip.
That being said, I’ve gotten coffee and said, “Keep the change” paying with a 5.00 bill.
But if he/she is haughty or acts like it’s a pain to serve me, there is 10% left.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 11:23amThank you, Blue. I’m glad to see there are other Christians who realize how our tips make us look (you might want to read my post above, I won’t repeat it here).
The waitresses really do need those tips. Not only do restaurants pay them less because they count on the tips to make up for it, but at least in some states, they have to pay taxes on tips whether the tip was actually given or not, because the state assumes they will be tipped.
