Henson Ong, who testified this week in defense of the Second Amendment, told TheBlaze his pro-gun ownership views came from a violent attack he and his family suffered in their native Philippines. (Image source: YouTube)
Henson Ong, the Connecticut resident and legal immigrant whose passionate defense of the Second Amendment drew applause at a legislative hearing this week, said his pro-gun ownership views were cemented after he and his family were the victims of violent crime in their native land.
Ong, of Waterbury, Conn., said he and his family immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines 13 years ago. He declined to provide many personal details, including his age, but told TheBlaze in a telephone interview it was that crime that prompted their move to the U.S.
“As a personal victim of violent crime, I can say that appeasement to criminals and disarming the innocent is not the solution,” Ong told TheBlaze. “If a violent criminal were to attack you and your family, the only answer, the only logical answer, is to defend oneself and eliminate the threat. That doesn’t necessarily mean killing, but it means stop the threat as quickly as possible.”
He added, “I do not want those rights, and the freedoms that come with the rights, eroded in my adopted country.”
Ong said he felt compelled to testify at the hearing amid nationwide calls for more gun control following the Newtown, Conn. elementary school massacre last month.
“What is the point of gun control? The common factor of all violence in society is the violent individual,” Ong said. “If the violent individual was not there you could have an arsenal and the arsenal would have harmed nobody.”
He said the Newtown tragedy has been hijacked by people driven by an agenda to restrict gun ownership.
“I believe much of this overreaction is illogical and irrational,” Ong said. “It is all emotion-based, and it is fanned by people who have an agenda, who have been waiting for an opportunity such as this.”
Ong said the enthusiastic response he got from the audience was an “encouraging” sign that “there is more support for freedom against the statist agenda of the current administration.”
“A disarmed population is subject to being victimized by their own government, and by those criminal elements who unfortunately as time goes on becomes part of the government, either directly or indirectly,” he said, referring to government corruption.
“If the population is disarmed, we are helpless. And if the Second Amendment rights are taken away, how long before the First Amendment rights are taken away? How do you enforce the taking away for the Second Amendment without violating the Fourth Amendment?” he asked. “This is a stand that must not fall.”

Jan. 31, 2013 at 4:38pmI am glad to see this gentleman expressing his opinion but it really doesn’t matter. We can have all the facts and history on our side but none of that matters any more. You see, the liberals figured out that it was easier to import their voters than win them over with logic and arguments so thanks to the late Big Fat Teddy K. and LBJ the die was cast for the demographic shift in this country. If you want to see what this country will look like in another twenty years look to Detroit. There could have been video of Obama clubbing a baby harp seal to death while giving unfiltered “Luckys” to a grade school student and listening to “Dixie” on a radio and he would have still been elected. FACTS DON’T MATTER ANY MORE.
Sometimes when an alcoholic comes to in a puddle of his own vomit he realizes that there might be a problem in his life. I hope we don’t drown to death before regaining conciousness. Keep your friends close and hang on.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 8:32pmActually, it does matter… It matters a great deal. Unlike most issues between liberals and conservatives where things are very black and white polar differences of beliefs. The issues concerning guns and the second amendment have a huge number of fence sitters that believe that there is more gray area than black or white combined. (To me, there is either a government that respects the constitution and my liberty to protect myself and my family or there isn’t). If a “bad moon is on the rise” (CCR) then I want to know that as many of these people… Who just can’t wrap there heads around the fact that we could fall prey to a tyrannical govt just the same as Russia, Cuba, and so many others, wake up while our ability to put up a mighty resistance is at it’s strongest.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 6:32amDon’t forget history. Mr Ong fled the Philippines, a country that overthrew their own corrupt Government, and expelled Ferdinand Marcos to Hawaii in 1986. “The People Power Movement” was successful because it was a massive, unrelenting ‘Peaceful’ demonstration made up of millions of angry but unified Filipinos. The military and police refused to fire on their own citizens when Marcos finally, in desperation, gave that order.
The Philippines was then a God centered Roman Catholic nation where contraception and abortion were ‘then’ illegal, and they easily mustered the national unity required to oust Marcos. That condition is missing in balkanized America where most citizens have turned their back to God… killed 56 million babies, and… don’t care.
There is, extent, a faint hope all that will change. After all, with surprisingly effortless ease, The TEA Party march on Washington, September 12, 2009, swelled to well over 2 million (ABC news reported it as over 75,000) and is still the largest demonstration ever seen in the Capitol. (King’s “I have a dream” speech drew 250-400,000 est.) Eight to Twelve million determined ‘peaceful’ citizens flooding Washington for weeks could do the trick. Will it happen… Can it happen; who knows? We will see!

ALL of our youth should have this man’s knowlege and wisdom. Our tax dollars that are spent for Education are being wasted. Home school your children OR de-program them every day when they come home from Government School. Thank you Mister Ong.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 4:09pmIf gun control actually did work, “Washington D.C. and Chicago” would be the safest two cities in the United States. these two cities they have the ” toughest gun back ground check laws “, but they have the highest gun crime activity and gun murder rates WHY ?
Last time I was in “Washington D.C.” standing at the Washington Monument gunshots just down the street, I looked at a Park police officer he looked at me just gangs shooting at each other don’t worry about it.
First time in “Chicago” visiting a friend in the hospital, at my motel hearing gunshots down the street, when I was going out to look around the city, I was warned to stay away from certain parts of the city, I would get robbed or shot by gangs. Hmmmmm
Law-abiding United States citizens, being denied gun ownership WHY ?
Gang bangers and their “” Overlapping turf issues “”, in our biggest cities do gangs go through gun background checks ? NO!

Jan. 31, 2013 at 3:51pm“Gun Control” (sic) is tantamount to unilateral disarmament. It doesn’t work for foreign policy, won’t work for domestic policy. What I’m NOT hearing in these hearings is that the right to keep and bear (RKBA) is guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.
When I hear, “Nobody needs a ‘military style assault weapon’ (sic).”
My immediate response is: “It’s not the Bill of Needs. It’s the Bill of Rights.”

Jan. 31, 2013 at 3:49pmMr. Ong I thank you for your heart felt words, and truth. You sir are the kind of immigrant that we in this country are proud to have and you show your love of this country, our freedom and what we stand for. It is sad that so many other Americans do not have the knowledge that you do about the Constitution and Bill of Rights. How easily we take all that for granted and my only hope is that maybe your words will inspire others to get their heads out of the sand and learn to appreciate what we really have here and learn to fight to keep it. I wish you and your family all the best.

The Alinsky radicals are violent criminal lovers and protecting THEM for some odd reason. Ergo- The alinsky radicals are accessories to these gun crimes, before AND after the fact.

Guilt and being Convicted of a crime is not the same thing. Just like a guilty person claiming innocent will never be so even if he is “found Innocent” by a court of law.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 3:23pmThe same people who look to disarm the population are those that can be found mocking those who store extra food, buy generators and look to become self-sufficient and labeling them as violent kooks. They are also the same ones who were complaining after Sandy and Katrina that there was no food or potable water for them.
They are the same who get their food in Styrofoam , cellophane wrapped packages, expect that when they call 911 the police will show up within a minute or two and they believe that because they feel secure with that lifestyle and mindset, everyone else must adhere to it as well.
They tell you that driving a truck is environmentally irresponsible even though that same truck is used to haul barbed wire to repair the fences and keep the steaks, grown for them, in the pasture. They say you don’t need a powerful multi capacity gun, even though that is what keeps the wild boars from tearing up the new feed fields.
They forget that the reason 2% of the population can feed the other 98% and the populations of other countries is because of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, but they are willing to preach to farmers regarding how to make their own dependent city bound lifestyle possible.
They do not see their own hypocrisy but only their “superior” social views and are perfectly willing to tell you what you “should” be doing. I have had enough. Not another inch.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:50pmIt’s pretty sad when a legal immigrant has to school so called Americans on their rights. Of course he’s correct that our second amendment right shouldn’t be infringed but congress has been doing that for over a century and they won’t stop until they get a total gun ban. Or until WE stop them and put those parasitical pustules of humanity otherwise known as a lifetime politician in their place. YOU work for us and as such you’ll do as you’re told got it? That means hands off the not only the second amendment but all of our rights because you didn’t gives us those rights so you can’t take them away, you’re just an impedance to liberty and freedom from YOU. This government is no different than any other that has ultimately disarmed their citizenry and if we allow them to do it we will find out just how ruthless they can be. They’ll also find out it won’t be walk in the park disarming us either. Bravo Mr.Ong you are an American.
