Legal Immigrant’s Must-Watch Testimony Against Gun Control: ‘Few Saw the Third Reich Coming Until It Was Too Late’
UPDATE:
We tracked down Mr. Ong and he gave us an exclusive interview. See what became the tipping point for his support of the Second Amendment here.
–
During a public hearing on gun violence in Hartford, Conn. on Monday, a legal immigrant by the name of Henson Ong issued a passionate defense of the Second Amendment and argued that gun control simply “does not work.” The video of Ong’s testimony has already surpassed 130,000 views on YouTube.
“Forgive me, English is not my first language. I am a legal immigrant and I am an American by choice,” he began, prompting applause from the audience.
“Thank you for giving me this opportunity to express my opinion and give my testimony in opposition to the majority of the proposed bills, which do nothing to deter future crimes,” he added. “Gun control doesn’t work.”
Ong then launched into a impassioned diatribe about what he considers to be the real problem fueling gun gun violence — “societal decay.”
“Your own history is replete with high school rifle teams, boy scout marksmanship merit badges,” he explained. “You could buy rifles at hardware stores, you could order them… your country was awash in readily available firearms and ammunition, and yet in your past you did not have mass school shootings*.”
“What changed?” he asked. “It was not that the availability of guns suddenly exploded or increased, it actually was decreased. What changed was societal decay,” he added, resulting in more applause.
Ong pointed to the Washington, D.C. and Chicago as two cities with some of the strictest gun laws but also “the highest crime and murder rates.”
“If gun control actually did work, Washington, D.C. and Chicago would be the safest cities in your nation. But [they are] not, they have the toughest gun laws and the highest crime and murder rates,” he said.
Ong also defended Americans’ right to own so-called “assault rifles,” which are really just semi-automatic rifles. Citing a recent purchase of 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO “personal defense weapons” by the Department of Homeland Security, he noted how the agency described the weapons as “suitable for personal defense use in close quarters.”
He went on: “Had the Koreans in the LA riots not had AR-15s and AK-47s with 30-round magazines — and Ruger 30s — their businesses would have burnt to the ground like all the other businesses in their neighborhoods. Theirs stood because they stood their ground.”
Driving a point home that many U.S. lawmakers don’t even seem to fully understand, the legal immigrant stated definitively that the Second Amendment’s purpose was not for hunting.
In closing, Ong quoted a famous statement by Judge Alex Kozinski in his dissent on the case of Silveira v. Lockye in 2002.
“My excellent colleagues have forgotten these bitter lessons of history. The prospect of tyranny may not grab the headlines the way vivid stories of gun crime usually do. But few saw the Third Reich coming until it was too late. The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed only for those exceptionally rare circumstances when all other rights have failed. A free people can only afford to make this mistake once.”
Ong ended his testimony to applause from the audience.
* In reality, school shooting deaths have actually experienced a steady decline between 1993 and 2010, studies show.
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Mr. Ong demonstrated why I have long maintained that in order to vote, one must have passed the same test required of those seeking to become naturalized citizens. Being born here does not guarantee that one understands our government, but having passed the test does.

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 8:40amAre you dim? Both legals and illegals come here to work. Both want freedoms. The difference is the law and the difference in breaking the law or understanding the law. The difference is those who do so legally waited, studied, and as Mr. Ong said by choice he is an American. Also you are wrong.Many Americans do want jobs. It is hard to compete when there are no jobs or licensed American jobs are undercut because of cheap illegal labor. The problem is our government has not done it’s job. For years and years. As to the 2nd amendment which is what this article is about he so understands our history I am proud he is an American. Condoleeza Rice also wrote in her book the 2nd amendment is why she chose to be a Republican. Personal story/civil rights. As Mr. Ong said or quoted “few saw the Third Reich coming until it was too late”. Dianne Feinstein obviously is not part of the “few”. Back to your comment–if my family were hungry or lived in a repressive country I would be sorely tempted to be an “illegal”. Houston, we sure have a problem!! Write your congressman about border control rather than gun control. If you really care, that is.

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 9:46amWell, all I can say is that when you have to compare a person or policy to Hitler to make your point, you really don’t have a logical argument, only an emotional one. Once you’ve used the “H” word, you’ve lost all legitimacy.
Secondly, people have cause and effect reversed as far as gun control laws and violence. Cities with lots of guns and lots of murders enact stricter gun laws. Besides, according to NRA logic, cities with lots of guns ought to have the least amount of gun crime right? If more guns are the answer to crime, then Chicago and New York, having lots of guns, ought to have the least crime.

Of course, the pertinent fact you so obviously omit is that the cities you admit are awash in guns are not awash in legal guns – owned by law-abiding citizens. To the contrary, they are full of violent criminals using illegally obtained guns. Your snide attitude only reveals what a lying, manipulative, anti-freedom hypocrite you are!
Lawful American gun-owners have always been the guardians of liberty – the Second Amendment guaranteeing them the absolute Right to defend our nation by force of arms: not only from some foreign aggressor, but from those who would use the privileges and authority we’ve loaned them (as our elected representatives) and use that power to usurp the legal positions of power over our government and ourselves.
If you don’t like it, that’s just tough. That’s the way it is – and the way it’s going to stay! Unless, of course, you think you’re going to kill or disarm 100 million, armed and patriotic citizens – many of whom have had a belly-full of tyranny already!
Your move.

I’ll leave you with this word from Bill Maher: “They think that’s what keeps the government from going too far. Without guns, Obama would become an emperor and force everyone to gay marry. Posted on January 31, 2013 at 11:15amWhat’s funny about this here is how he pointed out that when the DHS buys 7000 AR-15′s, they are called “Personal Defence Weapons” but when the DHS, the fed gubmint, and all the leftist gun grabbers talk about those same weapons in the hands of us people, you know us “civilians,” then they always use the term “assualt rifle.” As if the “AR” in the term AR-15 stands for “Assault Rifle.” I had conversation with an idiot relative over Christmas who so much has never even touched a gun in their entire 60 years of living (yet they know what gun laws need passed on us all law abiding “civilians”), who said, “Well you know that is what the “AR” means in AR-15, it obviously stands for “Assault Rifle.” I asked where they learned that, and they said “It’s how it is always reffered to on the news” (an obvious MSNBC watcher here I’m dealing with). They didn’t say another word after I told them to go look it up on their phone, as he looked at his phone, I said it stands for “ArmaLite Rifle, does it not? He just said “Well, you know…” I just walked away.
On another note, this is where these debates should take place, in the governments of the several states, and if they want to pass stricter gun laws there in CT and NY, then nothing is stop us in TN from not adopting such nonsensical laws. The federal govt has no authority to make such laws at all, especially if we are to be a free country governed by the “republican principles” this country was found upon.

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 11:32amAnd somebody tell SendtheMeateors, that crime and gun crimes is much lower in our “RURAL” areas where there are the “MOST” guns. Her comment about Chicago and New York, makes absolutely no sense, I guess she is referring to “offensive” or “illegal” guns in the hands of criminals and gangsters, versus “defensive” and legal guns that aren’t allowed to be owned by us “civilians” anyhow.
Plus, if that one gun grabber study that claims if you own a gun, then that gun is 12 more times likely to be used in an accidental shooting, or in a suicide; then by all means, what the hell is the federal govt waiting on, let’s just give all the thugs, criminals, and gangbangers subsidized guns, then by all rights, crime should drop by about 12 times if I’m reading this correctly. After all, they will also be 12 more times likely to kill themselves purposely, or accidentally. So then, going off that study, we would all be safer if we were to arm those who we want to get rid of in the first place, they’ll take themselves out, and it will also save us much more tax money that goes into fighting crime.

This has nothing to do with is immigration status. France had a national army, but not an armed citizenry. In fact, it was us Americans with our guns and courage, that were able to stop the Nazis in France. More gun power saved the French. Britain also was in short supply of arms and actually asked the US to send them more firepower. President Roosevelt responded and shipped 500 75mm artillery pieces, half a million Enfield rifles, 500 mortars and machine guns, and large quantities of ammunition. Private American citizens also stepped up to the plate and sent the British their personal firearms. French President Reynud asked Prime Minister Churchill and President Roosevelt to send them planes to help fight off the Germans. Roosevelt sent a carrier full of planes and dive bombers.
Next time, if you would like to make an educated comment, and contribute to the discussion, I recommend you don’t use Jon Stewart or Bill Maher as your source, or base your statements on leftist propaganda BS for that matter.

– President FD Roosevelt (1933-1945)
All the perplexities, confusion and distress in America arise not from defects in our Constitution; not from want of honour or virtue, so much as from downright ignorance of the nature of coin, credit and circulation.”

Just because a person makes a Hitler analogy does not make the argument incorrect. It would make it overused but not incorrect.
“Godwin’s law does not claim to articulate a fallacy”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law
Personally, I like using WW2 analogies when it comes to politics & foreign affairs. It was the last War that liberals & conservatives could agree.
Well, not really. All the die hard left wing fanatics were not on board until Germany attacked Russia. Only then would their be peace on the docks & no union rabble rousing by the left. But let’s just pretend that conservatives & liberals agree that defeating the NAZIs was a good thing.
So where are we?

“Well, all I can say is that when you have to compare a person or policy to Hitler to make your point, you really don’t have a logical argument”

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 2:16pmFormer11BRAVO, what do you mean when you say “illegally obtained guns”? Unless a gun was stolen, what could “illegally obtained guns” possibly mean? In this country, any person can legally sell a gun to anyone else. I could walk into a gun show with every penny I have, buy as many guns as I can afford, and sell them – legally – to any felon or murderer or rapist or terrorist. 40% of the guns in this country are purchased this way. All legally.
Yes, it sometimes happens that people protect themselves with guns. No doubt. But usually they are used to kill a family member or someone the owner knows. Or kill themselves.
I’m fascinated by this argument that we need semi-automatic guns with 100 round magazines to prevent tyranny. If you can only buy a 10 round clip, America is doomed to a dictatorship? Since we have way more guns per person than any other country in the world, you’d think we’d be pretty safe from tyranny compared to, say, Canada, the UK, Japan etc. You know, the rest of the world. You must be terrified about all those countries becoming tyrannical, leaving us the only Democracy in the world.
This macho, Rambo fantasy that without allowing anyone, anywhere to buy any kind of gun you’re going to be hunkered down fighting off tyrannical government agents with your 100 round magazine is just silly.

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 3:21pm@SendInTheMeatBalls Do you honestly believe that banning semi-automatic rifles would have prevented Adam Lanza from murdering all those innocent, defenseless souls in school that day? Do you honestly believe that limiting magazines to 10 rounds would have reduced the violence perpetuated that day upon those small children? In this country, no person can legally sell a gun to anyone else. Every state varies. In Maryland, any regulated firearm must be purchased through an FFL dealer, regardless if bought at a store, gun show or parking lot. In Maryland, you can not walk into a gun show and buy as many guns as you can afford, as the state only permits a person to buy one handgun per month. It is a federal crime to sell a firearm to any person you suspect of being a felon, murderer, rapist or terrorist, or to any person you suspect will commit a crime. A universal background check won’t reduce violence or crime but just increase the amount of paperwork and money a state and its law abiding citizens will have to spend, all just to administer and exercise a lawful right.
“According to a 2012 report to the Department of Justice, more than 72,000 people were turned down on a gun purchase in 2010 because they didn’t pass the background check. Only 44 of those cases were prosecuted.” http://www.policymic.com/articles/24070/gun-control-policy-universal-background-checks-aren-t-the-cure-all-people-think-they-are

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 4:46pmThe biggest problem we face today is that too many people, even many on the right, look at the United States as a singular entity, and not the plurality that is. The true path to victory is through local governance, that is– all politics are local. If we always speak in republican terms, that is small ‘r’ republicanism, the civic reality the federal govt was built upon, absolutely nobody can challenge the legitimacy of our arguments, indeed. Leftists want you thinking within confines of a singular United States, that we are “one people” and they always argue for their perverse notions of one size fits all when it comes to their ruling everyone with their progressive ideals and laws. Well, we are not “one” people, we are many peoples with many different political viewpoints. We do not still have state and local governments just to establish speed limits and other rather simple laws. We do not have to obey the wishes of a president, nor Congress, nor the Supreme Court on federal gun laws within the borders of our said states, per our 9th and 10th Amendments. They must go through due process first by repealing the 2nd Amendments, just as they did with the 18th Amend. Think they will? Anything else would be a tyrannical move, per our Constitution, which is still the law of the land. This why it is LEGAL for all these sheriffs and state legislatures to not enforce the king’s laws, and legal for them to prosecute any federal agent doing said job of enforcement

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 7:45pmVance, Hitler references are clearly applicable to this situation. I, for one, would prefer that his history not repeat. Regarding France, they did stop the Nazi’s. Would Hitler have been defeated if the French Underground was not so effective? How about the Warsaw Ghetto? That is one of the great stories of the war. What would have stopped Hitler before he got a chance to destroy is a lot less of the pie-in-the-sky, head-in-the-sand thinking that is plaguing us again today.

France & Britain had more tanks & better tanks than Germany. The question is will power & intelligence. The French leadership did not have enough.
Considering that the French had their own plans to invade Germany via the Ardennes (Plan XVII), you got to wonder why they didn’t think the Germans would think of it. Also they used their superior tank forces in penny packets. Let’s just say they were sh/t for brains.
Would the Jews have survived being rounded up if they had guns? More of the would have than survived the death camps. Do you want to argue otherwise? I bet you do. You are just that way.
With the NAZIs fighting Jews for several days, they would have been hard pressed to beat back the French. Especially before the British LEFT gave Czechoslovakia tanks plus their tank factory (Skoda) to Der Fuehrer Hitler.
I have a question. Did your party (the left), wrap up the Skodaworks with a big bow tie, when you gave it to Herr Hitler?

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 10:24pmvaliant1776 asks, “Do you honestly believe that banning semi-automatic rifles would have prevented Adam Lanza from murdering all those innocent, defenseless souls in school that day?”
Uh, yes. In the real world – not the Rambo paranoid fantasy world of an individual fighting off hordes of tyrannical government agents – those semi-automatic weapons with 30 or 100 round magazines are only used to kill lots of people very quickly. And that’s how they are used. Not for hunting – if you need 30 rounds to kill a dear or hog, you’re not a hunter. Not for home protection, although I’d be happy to read any link you post about about a home owner needing a semi-automatic weapon with 30 rounds to protect themselves.
Sorry Valiant, those weapons are designed for and only serve one purpose: to kill lots of humans very quickly. That’s what happened in Connecticut, Aurora, Virginia Tech and Columbine. That kind of firepower has never been needed or used by any American – ever – for self-protection.
And any American can make a quick buck by buying those weapons and selling them to terrorists, murderers, other felons, rapists and anyone else. 40% of all gun sales require no background check, no nothin’. Just cash.
And the claim on the far right is that that is the price of freedom. The same people with the paranoid Rambo fantasies about holding off the horde of communists with sheer firepower. And vegetable seeds for food.

Posted on February 1, 2013 at 10:15amHere are a few facts to shoot down the left’s lame arguments.
The Largest school killing in America was from a bomb.
A person could EASILY mow down 50+ children and adults with a 2-ton vehicle at 60 m.p.h. on a busy sidewalk when a elelmetary school lets out.
A determined killer could get a job in the cafeteria, and poison an untold number of children.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 108th Congress in 2003:
(2) Citizens frequently must use firearms to defend themselves, as evidenced by the following:
(A) Every year, more than 2,400,000 people in the United States use a gun to defend themselves against criminals–or more than 6,500 people a day. This means that, each year, firearms are used 60 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives.
(B) Of the 2,400,000 self-defense cases, more than 192,000 are by women defending themselves against sexual abuse.
(C) Of the 2,400,000 times citizens use their guns to defend themselves every year, 92 percent merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their attackers. Less than 8 percent of the time, does a citizen kill or wound his or her attacker.
It never ceases to amaze me how much of an expert you are on this topic. I suppose I should just completely disregard the opinions of those expert firearm instructors and legends, like Col Jeff Cooper (retired US Marine and actual combat vet) who created and ran the defense/tactical firearm training center Gunsite. His thoughts, published numerous times on the topic of ‘fast as you can squeeze the trigger shooters’, pretty much could be summed up as: the pray and spray shooter (whom uses the SCARY looking semi auto) is far less lethal than the shooter armed with a bolt action and fires ONLY aimed shots. The reality, which an expert like yourself would know through your exhaustive research is that a trained rifleman with a bolt action is actually faster on-target for follow up shots than that same rifleman with the semi-auto. Maybe you should actually do some basic research on firearms and not simply spout ignorance.
But lets forget about that for a moment. Lets just assume that you were right (which you aren’t) about how much more lethal the speed of an AR-15 is than the average deer/elk hunting bolt-action. This still doesn’t for one second negate the reality that the idiots using this type of weapon, have little or no training and so DO fire in the above mentioned ‘pray-and-spray’ method…with a ‘poodle-shooter’ round as some of
The reality, despite your irrational fear-mongering is that had the theater shooter been trained…well the AR style rifles would probably not been his first choice and the story would have been far worse than it actually was.
Lastly here, your ignorance was actually two-fold regarding the hi-cap mags. If you had been familiar with firearms and shooting you’d never have made that claim…partly because, like the rest of us who HAVE spent a long day at an outdoor range you’d understand the utility of not having to reload every couple of groups fired(usually 3-5 shots constitutes a group…just thought I’d help you to get past your ignorance).
I still recall a day when I was aboard the USS Truxtun in 1981, or maybe 82, when we picked up an overloaded craft that was probably designed to handle 6 people and there were 30 Vietnamese packed on it in the middle of the South China Sea….these were still people trying to escape the Vietnam take over and the the Khmer Rough…….it was pathetic.
When we picked these people up and gave them food, water, clothing…..sailors gave up their racks so they could sleep…it was heart breaking. We delivered them to Subic Bay, Philliippines….don’t know what happened to them after that….but man, to pluck these people out of the sea and see the happiness and gratitude that a US warship “saved them”, made my heart soar. To be honest, I was just a sailor on that ship and had no real part in the rescue; but man, that has to be the highlight of my life so far as to have the opportunity to see real oppressed people at least get a chance at freedom.
If they are building the surveillance state that we know they are building, these domestic acts of terrorism and glorification in the media should tell you one thing, they will increase because in a few years, an organized group of domestic terrorists, no matter who they are, will have a very low chance of success because the digital footprint left behind will leave tracks to the terrorists that will be found and can not be erased?
If the motto of the military is you won’t see it coming, it behooves citizens to keep a viligant eye, especially on physical locations depicted in Hollywood movies, no matter who they are, if they look like they don’t belong, find out why they are there? Why do you think Israel still exists? Because they watch everything?
Buy a paperbook notepad and a pencil, and start writing stuff down? Hundreds of thousands of paper notebooks are something the people in the shadows with access to hackers do not want? We have to either discourage domestic terrorism or make the jobs of law enforcement easier to catch these crooks when they think no one is looking, and put them behind bars?
The removal of gun free zones should be a priority, because we have no right to ask school teachers to be sitting ducks for the next kid that wants to saw off a shot gun? Gun free zones pushes the insane over the edge into the bottomless pit of tragedy, yet politicians act like they are not to blame?
Posted on January 31, 2013 at 6:39amWe treasure our children, but do not place protection around them more secure than a “keep off the grass” sign. There are plenty of other countries where armed security at the schools is taken for granted… it is a fairly standard feature of some private schools. ( I won’t even try to say all, my kid once went to an inexpensive private school without armed guards.)
1. focus on the mentally ill.
2. armed guards
– Both will be expensive, so be prepared to pony up even without a current tragedy in the news.
3. violent TV, games and movies. We need to make the reason WHY parents should pay attention to the warning labels part of the public discussion. Can anyone say skinnerian operant conditioning? Do you know what effects it has? Every species has some instinctive resistance to engaging in violence with members of it’s own species. Violence between species can be deadly, but within a species, there is more posturing and intimidation and less chance of real injury during most conflicts. The violence with which our media is awash creates Skinnerian operant conditioning, which lowers the threshold of resistance to violence. The industry has lied through their teeth about it just like the tobacco industry did, and for much the same reasons.
Time to add a warning label from the Surgeon General.
Fact is, I do not have faith that once a fascist socialist system impounds my guns as “evidence” I will ever see those arms again regardless of the verdict I receive.
Mr. Beck suggests that we allow our weapons be taken into the government’s hands should they come for them; and then turn to that same system to get them back. Mark my words, once they have them they will be destroyed and you will never get them back.
My gun is my right given to me by God to protect myself, my family, and my neighbors from all criminality.
That is why we can not let them strip us of the 2nd.
I’m glad Romney isn’t the one that gets to sell the gun grab; many on the right that oppose it fervently right now would concede out of loyalty to a Romney gun grab. My point is that Obama is a far worse salesman of the gun grab than Romney would have been…and he would have been:
Signed a permanent assault-weapons ban as governor of the Bay State. “Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts,” Romney said at the July 1, 2004, signing ceremony. “These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.”
While running for Senate in Massachusetts in 1994, Romney supported background checks and a ban on some assault weapons. “That’s not going to make me the hero of the NRA,” he said. Running for governor in 2002, he said, “We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts — I support them. I won’t chip away at them. I believe they help protect us, and provide for our safety.”
As you should be. I hope he does well. I deal with electrical engineers all the time due to my business and it’s a great way to make a good living.
His heart did not keep him out so in my eyes he is made of top notch military material and a Patriot.
BTW I never served and have never had the desire. However now I feel like I let my country down while watching my youngest do something that she does not have to do. I tried hard to change her mind but was told that this is what she is here on earth to do and what ever happens happens.
I must admit that I am scared but thats just because I am Dad and always will be.
Posted on January 31, 2013 at 9:12amOLDSURFRAT, Hey Bud, the entire time that I served I learned that it was not for everybody. That being said, those who work and support the military are just as much a part of the success as those who do serve. Naturally, that will be lost on so many of the trolls here.
Shoot, I hear and understand your concerns, I feel the same way with my son’s chosen course of life.
Absolutely. Now we conservatives have a black with Allen West, a woman with Michelle Bachmann, a gay with Rush Limbaugh, a Mexican with Marco Rubio (Mexican, Cuban, what’s the diff?), and now a Chinaman!
It is so.
Just for future reference, can you point to other Marines that fluff for 0, have no use for the 2nd, and have what appears to be a zero life and need to be told how to live? Hard charging devil dog such as yourself, it just seems odd that you would be a lefty after all your brothers and sisters would opt otherwise. Digress a bit and compare and contrast where a lefty and a “Marine” come together and how. Forego the heroics of Fallujah 2 momentarily. Is it a Jungian thing?
Don’t mess with Wango. The Marines probably taught Wango some martial arts like Karate or something.
Posted on January 31, 2013 at 1:05amI need this Patriot to run as my Congressman, Senator or President. We need to throw the trash out and water the tree of Liberty with “AMERICANS BY CHOICE” who are all too rare in Washington, where they believe they are American by privilege alone.
Bravo and Proud to have this man as my Countryman.
