These Photos Of a Giant Marlin Sinking a Fishing Boat Are Supposedly Real
A couple weeks ago, Marlin Magazine posted a few stunning photos on its Facebook page of a hooked marlin appearing to take down a fishing boat.
Here’s how things seemed to go in the photo album titled “Marlin Wins!”:

The boat was like “got ya!” (Photo: Marlin Magazine/Facebook)

But then the marlin was like “not so fast…kiai” (sounds like hi-yah!). (Photo: Facebook/Marlin Magazine)

“Not so powerful in your “big” fishing boat now are you?” -Marlin (Photo: Facebook/Marlin Magazine)

“Yep, now you’re really going to get it. Just wait until you’re in the water with me.”-Marlin (Photo: Facebook/Marlin Magazine)

“Never going to mess with a marlin again.” -People (Photo: Facebook/Marlin Magazine)
One of Facebook photo captions, which places the event in Panama, states the boat actually floundered and passengers were rescued by the boat that was snapping pictures.
In the comments, Marlin Magazine confirms the images were not photoshopped. The Grind TV has more:
Not all the details are in, but apparently the captain began backing down on the huge fish, a common practice in big-game fishing when a fish is taking line. He puts the boat in reverse to chase the fish.
One commenter on Marlin Magazine’s Facebook post who apparently had some knowledge of the incident said that the captain fell as he was backing down on the fish at full throttle. The boat took on too much water and, finally, there was no correcting the situation.
Do you believe the pictures are real, or do they look too Photoshopped?
Apparently for now it’s marlin: 1 and boat: 0.

Posted on February 1, 2013 at 8:35amI own a boat and fish the stream often. No way the fish sank the boat. Facts 1) The test of the fishing line was probably 80lbs and that would be top end for Marlin. 80 Lbs of pressure is not going to tip a boat that size pulling from the cockpit. If it were tied to the top of the tower, maybe, if it were in conjunction with a rogue wave. 2) Only small roller (wave) in the picture. Not enough to overcome the stern on its own.
What really happened … An inexperienced captain. If you look closely, there is a ton of white water in front of the boat. He was driving the boat near full speed in reverse. Sometimes this is done to back down on the fish or help line up the line but only briefly. It appears to me he was in full reverse and water started splashing up over the cockpit walls. This is very common in this situation. But .. it also appears he backed into a wave at the same time flodding his cockpit causing the boat to list and thus sink.
Bottom line .. poorly skilled captain at the helm.

Noooooo… You’re gonna spend 24/7 only thinking about one thing. What a lousy pain in the a$$ you must be to be around.

Posted on February 1, 2013 at 7:46amThank you Weiners Wiener. Well said. I am also sick of the negative comments whenever The Blaze posts anything that is off their idea of “Topic” especially if it is the least bit light-hearted.
I too want to know what else is going on in the world and oh yes, I too enjoy and need a good diversion once in a while.

LOOK BACK OVER THE YEARS……..The political stories are the same year after year … decade after decade. There certainly is more to life than politics.
.
IF YOU ARE SO CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY….where were you when the children in our schools were being indoctrinated in the liberal way of thinking for the past 50 years?
.
As an AVID FISHERMAN…..it was great to see this story.
.
AND YES……I believe the photos. The fish did not sink the boat. Water washing over the stern flooded it.
.
Live and breath politics and you will not live.
Live and breath life’s refreshing moments and you will truly live.

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 8:10pmIt is common when backing down on a large fish to take water over the transom. If the Captain loses control over the throttle, this can and will happen.

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 7:41pmConsider the relative masses involved here, and the whole thing becomes inconceivable. That fish cannot exert a sufficient force to cause the boat to heel over like that. Maybe if you strapped a couple of exocet missiles onto the fish and aimed them away from the boat. What the skipper was doing with the craft would have little to do with anything. Note to author: boats and ships “founder”, they don’t “flounder”.

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 4:21pmThere was another Marlin story within the last couple of months where this thousand pound Marlin came into the boat momentarily and probably would have killed everyone on the stern where it not to have slipped back into the ocean. It did hurt one of the fisherman with deep lacerations on an arm. I am thinking I might pass on catching a fish like that during some of the deep sea excursions I have fished….give me a Mahi-Mahi any day.
Real.

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 4:16pmI was on a boat like that out of Cancun on my honeymoon. A HUGE guy, the linebacker type, hooked an 8 foot white marlin. The ensuing fight was like something straight out of “Wild Kingdom”. The fish would strip out line, he’d reel it in, and the fish would strip it right back out like it was nothing. By the time he handed that fish, that big tough guy was HURTING. As epic as that was to watch, I never felt the boat was in danger of tipping over…

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 4:12pmThe pictures are probably real, but the fish couldn’t make this happen. The “captain” ran too fast in reverse and swamped the boat. Once water started coming over the stern it couldn’t be stopped. Captain Doofus is lucky that they’re all alive. It was his fault.

If the captain slipped and fell onto the throttle control, it would have propelled the boat in reverse at full speed. Not a good thing when you have a low transom – as you can see.

Posted on January 31, 2013 at 6:26pmthe results of JPEGSnoop in this case are meaningless… it will return that answer if you did nothing more than crop the photo and even in some cases the simple act of uploading it will cause it to come back with that answer.
I have over 5000 images on my drive that will return that answer, not because they are fake but because I shoot in RAW and by that fact alone must process them in a photo development program such as Lightroom.
The photos are not fake, but the marlin did not sink the ship, the Captain screwed up!
