Imagine the following scene:
A handful of union bosses crowd around an old card table, punching numbers into their calculators. They’ve been up all night. Someone puts on another pot of coffee and a few of the older bosses are starting to fall asleep. Those who are still alert and active scratch their heads and re-enter their calculations.
“Oh, my gosh!” one of them shouts, concluding the all-night exercise. “‘Obamacare’ is going to cost us!”
Yes, according to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, union leaders (i.e. the same people who campaigned tirelessly in favor of universal healthcare) are trying to figure out a way to avoid paying for the costs associated with “Obamacare.”
From the WSJ:
Labor unions enthusiastically backed the Obama administration’s health-care overhaul when it was up for debate. Now that the law is rolling out, some are turning sour.
Union leaders say many of the law’s requirements will drive up the costs for their health-care plans and make unionized workers less competitive. Among other things, the law eliminates the caps on medical benefits and prescription drugs used as cost-containment measures in many health-care plans. It also allows children to stay on their parents’ plans until they turn 26.
To offset that, the nation’s largest labor groups want their lower-paid members to be able to get federal insurance subsidies while remaining on their plans. In the law, these subsidies were designed only for low-income workers without employer coverage as a way to help them buy private insurance.
In early talks, the Obama administration dismissed the idea of applying the subsidies to people in union-sponsored plans, according to officials from the trade group, the National Coordinating Committee for Multiemployer Plans, that represents these insurance plans.
As financial reality sets in, and rather than figure out a way to pay for the bill they helped pass, unions are trying to see if Washington will bail them out.
“Top officers at the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the AFL-CIO and other large labor groups plan to keep pressing the Obama administration to expand the federal subsidies,” the WSJ notes, “warning that unionized employers may otherwise drop coverage.”
“A handful of unions say they already have examined whether it makes sense to shift workers off their current plans and onto private coverage subsidized by the government. But dropping insurance altogether would undermine a central point of joining a union, labor leaders say,” the report adds.
No, really, union heads are acting like no one warned them that costs would go up.
“We are going back to the administration to say that this is not acceptable,” said Ken Hall, general secretary-treasurer for the Teamsters.
“I heard him say, ‘If you like your health plan, you can keep it,’” said John Wilhelm, chairman of Unite Here Health, the insurance plan for 260,000 union workers. “If I’m wrong, and the president does not intend to keep his word, I would have severe second thoughts about the law.”
Why? Why? Why didn’t anyone tell these leaders about the costs associated with “Obamacare”?
“It seems someone finally noticed that mandating benefits and imposing regulations has a tendency to … increase costs,” Doug Bandow writes for the American Spectator. “Increases which workers are stuck paying. Who would have imagined such a result? It’s not like anyone warned them, right?”

Jan. 31, 2013 at 11:32amThe union leadership is so stupid they don’t study history. The communists have used them to get their power and now the communist policies are turning on them. They really thought they would not suffer any inconveniences at the hands of evil. I can only laugh not with satisfaction but at their ignorance. I still don’t understand why union members aren’t rising up against their leadership.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 12:00pmBased o leftist rhetoric, Obamacare IS RACIST. Here’s the logic tree.
1) Asking the poorest of the poor to produce ID to vote is racist.
2) Obamacare, an extention of the same Federal laws that require all doctors to have a copy of your photo id, in order for you to prove you are the insured, requires everyone to be insured. You must have photo-id to prove you have insurance you are required to have.
3)Obama-care is racist.
Or it could be that asking for id to vote might not be racist.
It is great joyous fun asking your lib firneds to answer this one.

Now it will be an executive order that grants them immunity or gives them permanent subsidies to offset their costs. They have at their disposal the most proficient actuaries in the insurance industry. They are well paid and most certainly gave a full account of the risks of the monstrosity called the “affordable care act”. Their “Dear Leader” also knew. The concept of unions was born in the earliest throes of the communist movement. It is in the D.N.A. of that heinous ideology. ObaMao and his minions the labor unions bosses are cut from the same communist cloth, and their goal is to destroy the capitalist system. The union rank and file will pay the price along with those of us who opposed Obamacare. In the end the only satisfaction we will get is knowing we were right and they are useful idiots. This will be interesting to watch unfold. IMHO – the unions are no longer needed by this administration (useful idiots) so I believe no deal will be made. I believe the administration’s next move will be to purposely end the “power” of the unions. Can’t have organized labor lingering around that could rise up and oppose them. History does repeat itself. Unions = Hitler’s brownshirts. Hitler also got rid of organized bullies after serving his purpose. The only difference is Obama will destroy the Union’s structure (through legislation and negative public opinion) so it will collapse under itself, not actually kill the members of the unions, as Hitler did.
The only change to this scenario will be if the administration finds they still might need the unions. Then a temporary deal (which looks permanent) will be made.

All she sees is the “good intentions” of the law. “Pre-existing conditions”, “reproductive rights”, 31 million covered…ad nauseum. She only sees the catch phrases, the sound bytes, the lab coats around Obama in the picture at the White House. She hears “tax the rich or the employer to pay for it” and she thinks that’s more than enough. She hears “individual mandate” and believes we all must do our “fair share”. She doesn’t have the mental apparatus to examine the law further, to question it to consider the consequences. Liberals function on a different mental plane than conservatives or libertarians. Liberals function on the emotional level alone. That’s why theyr’e so easily manipulated by unscruplous liars like Obama and Pelosi.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 11:57amI am also in the teachers union in a highly pro-union state (Illinois). Trying to talk to the rank and file democrats and convince them that the union leadership was wrong on this was literally like trying to convert Bin Ladin to Christianity. Not only do they ignore the facts they get down right angry and insulted.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 12:46pmHave you seen a book called Intellectuals and Society? It does a good job of explaining WHY some smart people can act so dumb. You know your sister is no idiot. You can’t understand why you were not able to make her see what was obvious to you. This is one of the books I would recommend… I don’t know if it will help you figure out the best way to get through to her next time, but It can’t hurt.
You have to start with where someone is, not where you want someone to be, when you are trying to persuade them of something. It helps to understand just where they are, and why. It was an eye opener for me.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 2:50pmYeah ‘Book Smart’ doesn’t mean ‘politically smart’ or even, ‘knows-truth-from-BS’, smart.
I use to work for a ‘smart guy’. He had a doctorate in Electrical Engineering, but he was clearly confused as to how I, a rational thinking human being, could be a Republican. One day he flat out asks me ‘why?’, and I told him” “Lincoln, Reagan, Abortion” (The 3 N’s if your will)
My patter was basically,
Lincoln freed the slaves.
Reagan proved tax cuts equal more revenue
and
Abortion kills babies.
As soon as I said “I’m Republican because Lincoln freed the slaves” He went pale and called me a racist. The man looked at me like I’d stabbed him.
Took me a few long minutes to find a dictionary that proved to him Lincoln was a Republican.
Then… I had the wonderful experience of watching the lights go on in his brain.
The only truly open-minded person I ever met.
So yeah, ‘book smart’ is a subset of smart.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 3:32pmNot to mention that is a selfish reason to vote for Obama. I myself enjoy the fact that my children are on my health plan until 26 (their jobs don’t provide insurance) but I did not vote for Obama because I believe he is a radical and I didn’t WANT this country “radically transformed”.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 10:42am“I heard him say, ‘If you like your health plan, you can keep it,’” said John Wilhelm, chairman of Unite Here Health, the insurance plan for 260,000 union workers. “If I’m wrong, and the president does not intend to keep his word, I would have severe second thoughts about the law.”

Jan. 31, 2013 at 11:09amYa but he didn’t say you could afford it when he was done. I love all those idiots that continue to believe this liar. He has lied every time he opens his mouth since he became a senator and you fools keep supporting him. All I can say is it is what can be expected when someone has the IQ of a farm animal. You liberals wanted it, you got it so shut up we don’t want to hear your pathetic winning.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 10:35amOh the uttermost thrill of seeing the unions understand how badly they have been played by the communist in the White House. The sheer joy of it is very much worth seeing happen.
Now then, will they demand of Obama wavers for their union members, or the subsidies to ensure they do not lose any more bribe money or such for their members?
Or have we finally seen, with Obama-care, the stake driven into the heart of the unions corrupt corpse as their members will flee in droves due to no healthcare coverage as they had been promised for joining the unions.
May we all see the destruction of the unions and the Democrat party come about soon.

Jan. 31, 2013 at 10:44amSnow, you are correct, they will speed dial the Kremlin in Washington DC and get waivers for the big wigs in the unions. Then they will be ramping up the criminal voting machines and illegal voters, the multi-voters, the dead, etc.
