Vancouver police are investigating multiple stabbings at an apartment in the 1200-block of Barclay Street. Jan. 31, 2013. (CTV)
Vancouver police on Thursday night arrested a seemingly deranged man who ran through the hallway of an apartment building stabbing and slicing people at random.
The stabbing rampage left seven people injured, six of which were taken to the hospital and one remains in critical condition, according to officials. Three of those individuals had been released from the hospital as of Friday morning.
Witnesses described a terrifying scene to CTV News where a 33-year-old man began stabbing residents for no reason.
“There were about six or eight cop cars on the scene. People were hanging over their balconies directing police, so obviously they could see the [suspect],” witness Angela Robinson told CTV News.
“I heard the police shout, ‘Vancouver Police, stay where you are,’ a few times and then I thought it would be best to get out of there,” she added.
Vancouver police Sgt. Randy Fincham said the only thing the stabbing victims have in common is the fact that they live in the same apartment building and were unfortunately around when the stabbing spree began. Investigators are still trying to determine motive.
“It appears that a lot of these victims were unrelated to each other and they had no dealings with each other tonight,” Fincham said.
“It was a very vicious, very serious attack. There were multiple victims in this,” he added.
Police eventually found and arrested a 33-year-old man they believe to be the suspect. Officials don’t think he is a resident of the apartment complex. The suspect had not been charged as of Friday afternoon.
“We’re looking at how he got into the building, or what he was doing in the building at that time,” Fincham explained.
Some have already took to social networks like Twitter to mock gun control by sarcastically calling for a “knife registry” and “knife control.”

Meanwhile, others argued that there were no fatalities because the man used a knife instead of a gun — meaning gun control worked.

And this is why gun control works: Canadian nut goes on rampage, no one dies ctvnews.ca/canada/vancouv… End of discussion.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper previously bragged that Canada has much stricter gun control laws than the U.S. In an interview with Quebec’s TVA network, he said that “the most important thing to remember is that Canada has a gun control system that is much more strong and strict than the Americans.”
According to gunpolicy.org, the right of private gun ownership is not guaranteed by law in Canada. Instead, a chief firearms officer determines whether a person is eligible to own a firearm based on an array of qualifications.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 10:30pmI really wish that I kept a list of every link I ever read or was given to me about self-defense/martial arts.
To those who think that a knife is less dangerous than a gun: the FBI did a study on this in 1992 (I believe) and concluded that:
1) A gun is about 30% effective [overall] at delivering a lethal wound within it’s effective range.
2) A knife is about 80% effective [overall] at delivering a lethal wound within it’s effective range.
3) In most cases knives are more dangerous than a gun because A) they are rarely brandished and B) the victim usually (~90% of the time) doesn’t realize there is a weapon involved until after they’ve been injured.
Cases like this are not really a fair comparison. We don’t know the motive, if the assailant meant to kill or just to wound, what he knew about how to use a knife or a gun, or where the wounds were sustained.
If you stab or slash 10 people on the arms, and shoot 10 people in the chest, you’ll probably kill more people with the gun.
On the other hand, if you stab 10 people in the chest, statistically, 8-10 of them will die.
A person with ANY knowledge of human anatomy (as in where the heart and lungs are) can easily deliver a killing strike with a knife. Where a bullet may “just” cause pneumothorax, a knife in a lung is usually fatal, especially if you twist it after stabbing the person.
There are other studies that come to different conclusions…

Feb. 1, 2013 at 10:42pmThe studies vary in how they are done and where wounds are received.
Based on those other studies, it would appear that the FBI ignores “defensive wounds” and only counts chest and abdomen stabbings in their data.
However, I would argue that the knife is a POTENTIALLY worse weapon for the following reasons:
1) Rarely, brandished. People carrying a knife for criminal activity intend to get up close and personal and probably use the weapon. People who carry guns in many cases just want to scare people.
2) Knives, at least in my thought process, are far more likely to spread disease when used on multiple people.
3) Many people “spray and pray” with a gun, not so with a knife.
4) More skill is required to use a firearm. A lot of these mass shootings are quite frankly pathetic from a marksmanship point of view.
Many of these mass shooters fire many many many rounds and kill few people for the amount of lead they put out. To really compare a knife to a gun would require that the knife be used for dozens or hundreds of “attempted stabs”, which almost never happens.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 5:48pmOkay, the available facts don’t go that far.
The total number of homicides in the United States from guns greatly exceeds the number of homicides from knives. Most firearm homicides in the U.S. are from handguns. Up until 1996, knife-homicides exceed gun homicides from Other Guns, which includes guns, rifles, etc.–anything other than a handgun. However, as the chart shows, handguns are still the primary weapon used in U.S. homicides.
Here’s the data from U.S. Justice Department data from 1973-2008, the latest year where data is available.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:48pmUNALIEN, here’s some data.
http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp#crime
* A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 0.5% of households had members who had used a gun for defense during a situation in which they thought someone “almost certainly would have been killed” if they “had not used a gun for protection.” Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 162,000 such incidents per year. This figure excludes all “military service, police work, or work as a security guard.”[12]
* Based on survey data from a 2000 study published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology,[17] U.S. civilians use guns to defend themselves and others from crime at least 989,883 times per year.[18]
* A 1994 survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Americans use guns to frighten away intruders who are breaking into their homes about 498,000 times per year.[20]
* A 1982 survey of male felons in 11 state prisons dispersed across the U.S. found:[21]
• 34% had been “scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim”
• 40% had decided not to commit a crime because they “knew or believed that the victim was carrying a gun”
• 69% personally knew other criminals who had been “scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim”[22]

Feb. 1, 2013 at 5:22pmRegarding the claim about knife vs. gun lethality …
Here’s actual data from the U.S. Department of Justice. The following chart shows the number of homicides from Knives, Other Guns (not handguns but includes shotguns, rifles, and even those dreaded “assault weapons”), and Other Weapons (clubs, fists, poisons, cars, etc.).
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-urkGy1YrL0E/UQME0jQV7AI/AAAAAAAAB0U/spjdqODjMLQ/s1600/nij_homicide_data_knife_other.png
Notice how Knives killed more people than Other Guns up until about 1996. Knife-related homicides continued to drop from 1980 until 2008. Why? Was it because of strict federal assault knife ban? Nope.
Here’s a big-picture view of U.S. homicides and the type of weapon used.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S8FD-OqhBcw/UQME0KqPWzI/AAAAAAAAB0M/F21BPdy8gfk/s1600/nij_homicide_data_doj.png
Here’s a chart showing the 10 U.S. cities with the highest firearm homicide rates. Imagine the gains we can make as a nation just by reducing gun homicides in these cities first. This chart uses data provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Of course, there are other major pressing causes of death for innocent American children. This chart shows selected causes of death using U.S. Census Bureau data.

If this nut job or any of the helpless victims had aids or hepatitis the possibility of spreading a deadly disease is very high. So the initial anti gun idiot responses assumes they were only injured maybe they have been given a death sentence…..
