Suicide Bomber Strikes U.S. Embassy in Turkey

In this image made from video, emergency personnel are seen in front of a side entrance to the U.S. Embassy following a blast, Ankara, Turkey, Friday, Feb. 1, 2013. Turkish news reports say an explosion in front of the U.S. Embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara has injured several people. Credit: AP
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive Friday in front of the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, killing himself and a guard at the entrance gate, officials said.
U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardione told reporters that a Turkish citizen was also wounded in the 1:15 p.m. blast in the Turkish capital.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but both Kurdish rebels and Islamic militants are active in Turkey.
The bomb appeared to have exploded inside the security checkpoint at the side entrance to the embassy, but did not damage the inside of the embassy itself.
TV footage showed the embassy door blown off its hinges. The windows of nearby businesses were also shattered by the power of the blast, and debris littered the ground and across the road.
Police swarmed the area and immediately cordoned it off and several ambulances were dispatched.
An AP journalist saw one woman who appeared to be seriously injured being carried into an ambulance but a hospital official said she was “not in critical condition.” On its website, the Hurriyet newspaper identified the woman as Didem Tuncay, a television journalist who it said was at the embassy to get a U.S. visa.
The embassy building is heavily protected and located near several other embassies, including that of Germany and France. Hurriyet newspaper said staff at the embassy took shelter in “safe room” inside the compound soon after the explosion.
Phones were not being answered at the embassy later Friday.
Police examined security cameras around the embassy and identified two people who could have been the suicide bomber, a police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.
In a statement, the U.S. Embassy thanked Turkey for “its solidarity and outrage over the incident.”
Kurdish rebels who are fighting for autonomy in the Kurdish-dominated southeast have dramatically stepped up attacks in Turkey over the last year. The United States considers the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, a terrorist organization and has helped Turkey in its battle against the group. But the group has not attacked U.S. targets in its nearly 30-year insurgency.
Homegrown Islamic militants tied to al-Qaida have carried out suicide bombings in Istanbul, Turkey’s bustling commercial center. In a 2003 attack on the British consulate, a suspected Islamic militant rammed an explosive-laden pickup truck into the main gate, killing 58 people, including the British consul-general.
In 2008, an attack blamed on al-Qaida-affiliated militants outside the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul left three assailants and three policemen dead.
Turkey is also being deeply affected by the brutal civil war in neighboring Syria, and has become a harsh critic of President Bashar Assad’s regime there. The war has left at least 60,000 people dead so far, according to the U.N., and Turkey is sheltering tens of thousands of Syrian refugees.
The first of six Patriot missile batteries being deployed to Turkey to protect the country against attack from Syria was just declared operational and placed under NATO command. Others are expected to become operational in the coming days.

So, once again our Embassy was successfully protected from a failed attack. Benghazi compound was not an Embassy, but a locally notorious clandestine rendition site where captured thugs were
taken to be “debriefed.” If it had been heavily guarded it would have ceased to be clandestine.

Embassy or Fast and Furious Benghazi style..”what difference does it make” right? Isn’t that Hillary’s take on all this? Oh and let’s ignore the fact that the UK and the Red Cross had an embassy and a mission there too and left the area months before knowing trouble was fomenting. Let’s also ignore all the people that were saved at the site by SEALS who disobeyed orders to do so at the cost fo their own lives. Nah…had to have been an interrogation facility..which fits nicely into your lefty “anti-Bush policy” narrative. But let’s forget that Obama preserved Rendition on a long weekend while dolts like you were asleep.

Kryptonite, for once we agree on something. You are correct in stating that the entire Middle East was destabilized when Bush invaded Iraq, all in the name of democracy. I mean originally the claim was to eliminate WMD, but, when those where nowhere to be found, it switched over to the democracy thing. Because of that Iran became the supreme power in the Middle East and able to exert their influence to overthrow America friendly dictatorships.
What is the deal with this AvenueK guy? I know he’s a potty mouth, which is generally an indication of low IQ and an inability to express one’s ideas logically. Come on, show some intellectual honesty. You know darn well that was the intel, and Dims and Repubs were on the same page. I contend those WMD were moved to Syria, but we won’t know because Bush publicly warned Saddam of an invasion weeks before, which was quite stupid.
Yes, Bush talked about democracy in Iraq. In fact things were going fairly well, with FREE elections and all (unlike in Egypt where Islamists forced themselves in), until Hussein took over, and there was a clear resurgence of violence. It has been escalating ever since.
Those “American-friendly dictatorships” were overthrown thanks to Hussein and his media, who called Mubarak and Khaddafi “brutal dictators” and commanded them to step down. Do you delude yourself, JZS, or do you just enjoy lying?

Because the threats were so similar and because the first threat came to nothing, they were poking fun at them both.
Having said that, I also have to note that Glenn’s radio show has utterly lost its focus and is now among the worst radio programs I have EVER heard. I tune in to hear something of substance and instead we are treated, sometimes, to whole hours of the three of them talking about food, or movies or that STUPID, ANNOYING “More On Trivia”. Please, please, PLEASE at least dump the trivia: it is horrible and not funny. Taking unsuspecting people and asking them idiot questions and then, at random providing idiot non answers and then making fun of the people is some of the most awful radio content in the history of radio.
YOU heard it hear first – if Glenn et. al., don’t fix their show and go back to providing REAL content and news it will start to crash and burn within in the year and it will be gone in many, many markets by the time another year rolls around.
Final thought to Glenn – why in the name of God would anyone want to tune into a radio show and waste his or her time listening to three goons talking about nothing? Oh, and one more thing – that bit about “You know who” was funny for about 30 seconds…it is now insufferably annoying – I am starting to turn off your show regularly

@Lem– Glenn is just trying to cash in on the polarization of America. He endorses an Agenda 21 book, and then demonized Alex Jones. Fishy. Glenn claims he is a Libertarian, yet he spent hours of his Radio Show endorsing Romney..if he was a true Libertarian he would have endorsed Gary Johnson. These attacks against American targets in other places are part of a much larger picture. Christ warned you in Matthew 24 Mark 13 and Luke 21 that these events would occur, the problem is most people don’t study the Greek language which was translated into English, therefore they are unaware of the word nation in those verses actually being the Greek word Ethnos (where our word Ethnic comes from).
Christ warned us that in the end times (where we are today) that we would experience ethnic fighting.. Big surprise eh? Look folks the final generation started in 1948. Understanding that there are 70,80, and 120 year generations… well you do the math. Expect these occurrences to increase

Posted on February 1, 2013 at 8:53amAs I recall, wasn’t Ambassador Stevens meeting with the Turkish representative in Benghazi just moments prior to the start of the attack on the US? Wasn’t there talk of US arms going through Turkey into Syria? With all those other Embassies in that area, is there any wonder as to why they picked the US embassy? How did they get past the “heavily protected” security and into the compound next to the visa entrance? Wasn’t the US provided arms to Syria also used against Ambassador Stevens and our other Americans? Wasn’t the same arms also just used in the Algeria / Mali attack? Does anyone else suspect that the “homegrown Islamic militants tied to al-Qaida” might have used US provided arms in this attack?
These people were just driving down the road in a bomb laden vehicle.
They just happened to enter the US Embassy.
They just happened to get past the security check point.
They just happened to explode their vehicle on Secretary Clinton’s final day in office.
Secretary Clinton was proven to be correct. At this point in time what difference does it make! Benghazi just doesn’t matter, not when the US is arming and training groups and the groups are selling some of the arms to those that wish to harm Americans.
After a few weeks of rest and relaxation, maybe POTUS will nominate Secretary Clinton to become an Ambassador to one of these countries. I bet that hearing confirmation would be swift.
