SAN DIEGO (AP) — Male Marines listed being falsely accused of sexual harassment or assault as a top concern in a survey about moving women into combat jobs, and thousands indicated the change could prompt them to leave the service altogether.

The anonymous online questionnaire by the Marine Corps surveyed 53,000 troops last summer, with the results provided to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta before he opened thousands of combat positions to women last week.

The Marine Corps released the results to The Associated Press on Friday.

Among the other top concerns listed by male Marines were possible fraternization and preferential treatment of some Marines.

Respondents also worried that women would be limited because of pregnancy or personal issues that could affect a unit before it’s sent to the battlefield.

Military experts said the results were not surprising because the Marines have the highest percentage of males among the branches of the armed forces.

Former Marine infantry officer Greg Jacob of the Service Women’s Action Network said the Pentagon’s estimate that 86 percent of assault victims opt against filing complaints “suggests that there’s hardly an overabundance of reports, false or otherwise.”

Some, however, said the survey shows the need for sensitivity training and guidance from leadership so the change goes smoothly, as occurred when the military ended its policy that barred openly gay troops.

“I think there is this sense among what I would imagine is a very small minority of Marines that this male bastion is under siege and this is one more example of political correctness,” said David J. R. Frakt, a military law expert and lieutenant colonel in the Air Force reserves.

Just as the Marine Corps adjusted to the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” despite being the most resistant among the military branches, troops will likely fall in line again with this latest historical milestone, said Frakt, a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh.

Marine Corps officials did not respond to a request for comment on the survey results.

About 17 percent of male Marine respondents and 4 percent of female respondents who planned to stay in the service or were undecided said they would likely leave if women move into combat positions. That number jumped to 22 percent for male Marines and 17 percent for female Marines if women are assigned involuntarily to those jobs, according to the survey.

Both sexes mentioned intimate relationships between Marines and feeling obligated to protect female Marines among their top five concerns about the change.

Female Marines also said they worried about being targeted by enemies as POWs, the risk of sexual harassment or assault, and hygiene facilities, according to the survey, which did not give specifics.

The women surveyed also expressed concern about acceptance and physical abilities if given a ground combat job.

About 31 percent of female respondents – or 1,558 women Marines – say they would be interested in a lateral move to a combat position as their primary job, and 34 percent – or 1,636 – said they would volunteer for a ground combat unit assignment.

Elaine Donnelly of the conservative Center for Military Readiness and a vocal critic of the change said the survey asked the wrong questions and should have been asking if troops favor it and whether it will make a more effective force.

The questionnaire also relied on the “mistaken belief” that training standards will remain the same, which Donnelly said is not realistic given the differing physical abilities between the genders.

She said the Pentagon is bent on imposing gender-based quotas that will drive down standards. Defense leaders say standards will not be lowered.

“The results that are being put out there are designed to manage public perception,” she said. “There is a lot about this that still needs to be discussed and it’s really not fair to the women who serve out there.”

The infantry side is skeptical about how women will perform in their units, and some positions may end up closed again if too few females meet the physically demanding standards of combat, said Gen. James Amos, head of the Marine Corps, who spoke to reporters Thursday at a defense conference in San Diego.

“I think from the infantry side of the house, you know they’re more skeptical,” Amos said. “It’s been an all-male organization throughout the history of the U.S. Marine Corps so I don’t think that should be any surprise.”

Most Marines support the policy change, Amos said.

It will be up to the military service chiefs to recommend and defend whether women should be excluded from any of those more demanding and deadly positions, such as Navy commandos or the Army’s Delta Force.

Over the past decade, many male service members already have been fighting alongside women in Iraq and Afghanistan. Women who serve in supply units, as clerks and with military police have ended up on the unmarked front lines of modern warfare.

More than 150 women have been killed in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan while serving in support roles.

About 7 percent of Marines are female compared to about 14 percent overall for the armed forces.

Both sexes surveyed said getting women closer to the action will improve their career opportunities.

This is exactly why Obama is promoting pphagots in the armed service and forcing women to now jeopardize the lives of men in combat.

HE WANTS MUTINY in the service and chaos and financial ruin in the civilian populous to crush this nation so he can setup martial law.

As the Obama Administration mismanages the military, the young warriors who have served proudly for generations will stop enlisting and the nation will again have to rely on the draft system to fill their ranks. You say, not a big deal. Serving in the military is mostly a warrior mind set and this Administration seems intent on destroying this mindset. Destroying the 2nd Amendment is also a no brainer for the warrior mindset. It will also bite us shortly down the road.

Insanity reigns, how did people get so stupid so fast?! Would not blame the MEN that are leaving, they deserve to be able to depend on their brethren when fighting. To put men in this position is evil and shows a total disregard for what is best for their safety and best possible odds to satisfy the selfish, ignorant, liberal idiots.

Being put in a position that shows total disregard for what is best for their safety is the job of a U.S. Marine. The people who put them in those positions are often stupid and/or evil. If you don’t want your life to be squandered stupidly in a cause that may or may not be righteous, then you shouldn’t sign up in the first place.

This is not in reference to what this article is about, but this is in reference to understanding WHO this article is about.

Just remember Eisenhower warned us of the Military-Industrial Complex.

The Department of Defense, The NAVY, the ARMY, The AIR FORCE and every other division is a PRIVATE COMPANY !!!

      http://www.manta.com/c/mmbpwrh/united-states-department-of-defense.

That explains the TV commercials, NASCAR sponsorships and advertising campaigns.

LEON PANETTA also tells you that the PRIVATE COMPANY works for the UNITED NATIONS and could care less what the CONGRESS or AMERICAN PEOPLE think.

      Can these warriors pick up:

      (1) An 80 pound ruck sack.
      (2) A 10 pound LCE or combat vest.
      (3) A Full Combat load of Ammo and grenades (10 pounds).
      (4) A 4 pound Kevlar helmet.
      (5) 8 pounds of armor.
      (6) A 6.5 pound weapon.

Can she carry this load while walking up a mountain on ankle turning scree in 100 degree temperatures, and keep up with her platoon? Can she do this every damned day, for weeks at a time with almost no breaks?

Can she run and dodge as bullets impact the rocky sand? Can she jump over walls, climb through windows, kick down doors?

Can she buttstroke, kick, and punch 4 pissed off and sullen Iraqi teenagers who won’t sit down like we commanded when we were clearing the building? Can she do it alone because the squad screwed up and are all upstairs clearing the 2nd floor, and she’s alone with these angry teens?

Can she pick up her 220 pound, 6″2″buddy, who got shot in the elbow and went into immediate shock becaue the pain was too intense? Can she throw him onto her shoulders and run him 75 yards to a little sheep pen, because that’s the only cover around?

Can she shoot an Iraqi teen in the face, and watch him bleed out as he screams like a girl?

Can she laugh about his antics with her platoon later, rather than cry her guts out?

Can she fend off the sexual advances of a platoon of 20 somthing hard chargin’ alpha males. And yes they all want to get in her pants, because that’s just what young men like that do.

Ranger, to add to your list, lets consider woman at the speartip. In the field for months with no shower. How would this play into women’s specific personal hygiene needs? How about the new supply issue that goes along with that? Not to be gross, but units would need an extra truck just to carry bulky sanitary napkins and other hygiene supplies.

You already touched on fighting vs crying but this deserves more attention. Men possess much higher levels of testosterone which is responsible for strength, size and aggression. Women are nurturing by nature, men less so. I forsee huge PTSD issues when women are subjected to the horrors of the battlefield. If men suffer PTSD, how bad will it be for the women?

Ranger, my knees and shoulders are fairly screwed up as I enter middle age, how are yours? How will lighter framed women fare after subjecting their bodies to the same abuse?

Being a female this is complete lunacy. It only takes common sense to know we will be seeing more of our brave men coming home in body bags. If I were the devil this is a perfect way to further break down our families as well. Now the wife, who is waiting at home, taking care of things on the home front will have this added to her worry. She’ll be worried that his chances of dying are increased because now because some feminazi just had to prove she was better than a man. In addition she also has to worry that her husband who is lonely for some lovin isn’t going to be able to resist the temptation. He might come home alive but get that knock on the door that feminazi is pregnant or had a disease he has brought home to his wife. The other problem are the b* tches that scream sexual harassment because someone watched her go pee pee and she is now offended.

I’m sorry but I can’t stand most women these days which is why my husband is my best friend. This decision is just further proof that the women’s movement is going to be the downfall of our nation. I’m sure someone will disagree with my assessment. God gave Men and Women a role when he created us. We’ve thumbed our noses at his design so now we suffer the consequences. The worst part is those consequences are dead warriors. Common sense is officially dead within our government.

Well the Pentagon wanted to reduce the Marine Corps by over 20,000 Marines. This should help them get their wish. Personally, I saw female officers in the Field Artillery who weren’t even able to serve in any artillery unit other than the Division Artillery HQ. While the males were out serving as Fire support team leaders, firing platoon leaders, battery executive officers, and a variety of other positions that required often hard work and 18+ hour days with sleeping arrangements being whatever piece of ground was dry enough to lie down on, the females were pushing papers and making coffee. When it came time for evals, the senior officers didn’t dare give them anything but excellent ratings or they would file a complaint with the AG and get the senior officer in trouble.

While the Lt Col in the article is a Lt Col, it’s in the AF reserves. While I have nothing against the Air Force, the vast majority of their operations are not close to being as strenuous as a Marine in a ground combat role. Women can serve in virtually all AF positions without endangering the lives of their fellow airmen due to reduced physical strength. The same can not be said for Army or Marine combat units. The very idea of putting a woman into the SEALs is ludicrous. Women simply lack the upper body strength to be able to carry the weight of a normal SEAL combat load. Some may actually be able to serve in Delta Force because some of their missions would benefit from a woman being used for cover.

True, there are a few women out there that might be able to keep up with the guys in general – however, there are not enough of them and I would not (after 20 yrs in military) want a female covering my six. Also would not want them captured as that would be a daunting experience – for everyone involved. Our society and cultural mores do not prepare us for this type of situation.

If the country were in a life or death struggle for survival, and you could only have an all male military combat force or an all female combat force which would the country chose? Of course, we know the answer. So, by adding one female to the all male force, would, by definition, weaken that force. Same question can be applied when you have either an all homosexual military force or an all heterosexual force. Social engineering has NO DAMN place when talking about the security of the United States of America and it’s families.

Cotton, the people who do not want to see will not see. The equal rights crowd will continue to stand and insist that women can do and are equally effective at doing anything men can do. Even if you built an all female NFL team and placed them at scrimage opposing the Pittsburgh Steelers (or even the Chiefs for that matter), they would still believe the women were equal competitors and stood a chance. Go ahead and take the best women in the world and put them up against the last place Kansas City Chiefs and lets see what happens. The trauma center it the local ER would be packed. Same principal applies to women in combat, but political correctness shall prevail.

“Just as the Marine Corps adjusted to the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” despite being the most resistant among the military branches, troops will likely fall in line again with this latest historical milestone”

Phhhhh. Just because the average citizen (or servicemen) chooses not to raise a fuss, do not presume anything. Tell me, did you bother to ask, and did you give any assurances there would be no retaliation for an honest answer (not that anyone would believe you)?

My brother oh so coincidently left the service shortly after this “repeal.”

The ancient Samatian women were warriors (some say they are the Amazons) and had their right breast removed to aid in wielding of the sword.

Yeah, and it completely makes sense to believe that could possibly actually be true because any woman who has had a mastectomy can tell you how much more limber it made her.

This really reminds me of Frank Herbert, Dune series. Fish women will soon replace secret service guarding the god emperor.

Word has it that the Marines are not happy with the way this country is moving. The clear majority of Marines never signed on for the garbage that is being forced on them. Things could get interesting in the not to distant future.

If only the Army and Marines hunker down and do not have their sons join these services and the two services can not meet their required enlistment goals, they will be forced to implement the draft which will now have to include………….women! Have a nice day!

Well O’furher wants to fire twenty percent of our best fighting force. I wonder why they want to remove the best of the best? Maybe the branch that would be the first to refuse to follow him and Big Sis against their own is a threat to them. They also want to put women on the front lines to stir up a mess and create havoc in the ranks of all branches. So big Sis is taking command of her forces arming them with 7,000 AR TYPE (self defense weapons) not assault rifles as they are not single shot/auto combinations like her teams guns.
This is starting to smell pretty bad. Millions and millions of hollow point rounds for Homeland Security, FEMA, ATF, Social Security and IRS forces. Downgraded real soldiers, ruining there moral, cutting their jobs. And all this is going on while two countries of hate are on the verge of nukes, Eight US Embassies bombed during the first four years of O’Furher. This is just all starting to look like the things done in the 1930′s in a small country in Europe. Not to mention putting a hack in charge of defense. I guarantee they have something on Hagel and he is trying to screw up just to get out of it. He may not want to be the pawn, so what is being held over his head. This all stinks.
In the few words left. There is no way women and men can survive and be a unit for days on end in the field. It will be a complete failure. If they want an all woman unit so be it. Put the best together and send them together as a unit. have them prove it in the f

Women need to look outside the front lines and let the boys be boys, if you want to create all women groups that makes sense mixing genders will lead to kaos and infighting. This isn’t the office, this is life or death, if someone makes a mistake or argues at the wrong time they don’t lose clients they die. Of course a real shovienst would say that this is an excellent way for feminists to commit suicide trying to prove a point only problem is that the collateral damage will likely be a whole platoon or division trying to save her targeted ass.
Perhaps we should send all feminists even those lobbying for this to the front lines and finally determine the truth of the battle of the sexes, if they are right, it will be the end of Taliban if they are wrong feminism is over. T

he tiny fraction of women who are excellent in military will not make up for the majority are not, the others will get everyone killed.
