Wounded Warrior Project is refusing to accept a Florida Christian church’s money because it is “religious in nature,” Fox News’ Todd Starnes reports. Liberty Baptist Church and Academy, located in Fort Pierce, Fla., is also a K-12 school.
“We were heartbroken,” Pastor Wallace Cooley told Fox News.
It wasn’t until after Liberty Baptist Church and Academy had already paid a $100 registration fee to raise funds for Wounded Warrior Project that the they received an email from the non-profit organization.
“We must decline the opportunity to be the beneficiary of your event due to our fundraising event criteria, which doesn’t allow community events to be religious in nature,” WWP’s community events team wrote in an email. “Please note your registration fee will be refunded within the next 7-10 business days.”
Because Wounded Warrior Project considers itself to be a nonpartisan organization, the group says it can’t accept fundraising from companies “in which the product or message is religious in nature.”
The church was reportedly planning to accept a special offering on the last Sunday in February and students were collecting money from family and friends to give to WWP.
“We had to tell our children and parents we can’t give to the Wounded Warrior Project…We are second-class citizens now because we are people of faith,” Cooley told Fox News.
The pastor said the church anticipated bringing in roughly $50,000 for military veterans.
Fox News has more details:
A Wounded Warrior told Fox News they would look into the matter. The organization did not respond to subsequent telephone calls.
The fundraising project was a joint effort by the 400-member church and the 460 students who attend the academy. The pastor said he first learned about WWP by watching Fox News Channel.
“We appreciate the freedoms we enjoy in this country and the fact that our soldiers have fought for freedom of religion,” he said. “We teach patriotism in our school.”
Kindergarten teacher Tanya Sue Albritton posted a message on the Wounded Warrior Project Facebook page, explaining that her students were devastated.
“They were very sad,” she wrote. “One little girl wanted to know, ‘Why can’t we share with the soldiers?’”
“I was at a loss as to what I should tell her because I don’t understand it myself…Well, WWP, why can’t we share with the soldiers,” she added.
In delivering the news to his congregation, Pastor Cooley penned what he described as “one of the saddest letters I have ever had to write”:
“We are very disappointed that we, as a religious organization, are being discriminated against. But they are a private organization and have and should have the freedom to make their own rules.”
Cooley said the donations that were made have been returned and the church is currently looking for another veterans group to help — one that will accept their generous donation.
TheBlaze has reached out to Wounded Warrior Project and will update this story as additional information becomes available.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:44pmAs a regular contributor to this organization, I demand an explanation for refusing the donations of the “religious organization”? I suppose 80% of the donations they receive are from people of faith. I for one, will STOP my regular contributions if they do not solve this problem (IMMEDIATELY)!!!
Just for The Blaze readers info, you cannot email the WWP as the page has an “error”

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:35pmWWP has chosen to be secular but now will have to suffer the consequences. People of faith are by far the biggest givers in the world. Now we know that it would dishonor their principles to accept our money. In honor, we will have to oblige.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:32pmWe’ve been donating to WWP since it’s inception but now will seriously consider ‘spreading the meager funds’ around unless this gets rectified asap. This is what happens when society is catatonic due to ‘lawyerphobia’. Political correctness was invented by communists and has only made money for lawyers. There needs to be an ‘Emily’s list’ for lawyers. We need to know in a VERY public way who is a Patriotic Counselor and who’s just a money grubbing useful idiot.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:31pmThis makes me so angry. They seem to have forgotten the adage of “beggars should not be chosers”. I just completed my estate planning with a significant amount dedicated to Wounded Warriors. I will be calling my attorney to make a change, looks like it will be going instead to the USO wich provided so much to make my time in Vietnam tolerable!

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:28pmI’m sorry the nature and quality of the letter written to the church indicates WWP is atheist and likely socialist in it’s structure. Legally there is no reason for them to not accept donations from a church, this is a policy issue, and as such it indicates the rotten anti morally straight values that are becoming pervasive in military culture. I hope fox publicly flogs them.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:46pmEveryday we hear stories about things like this. The progressives have infiltrated all walks of life, government agencies, banks, charities and communications. I’m only donating to causes that have been proven that they have no sneaky agendas. Not many of them left, I’m afraid.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:26pmI am most surprised about the WWP. It should be the opposite–regardless of your type of institution, you should be able to give and use the logo–even if you have to have a disclaimer when you use it–something like “WWP does not necessarily endorse the given organization’s goals etc…”
WWP should know that prior to Christianity there was no real charity trait (no Bill Gates; Gates is a by product of the Christianity, even as he denies his God) in any society–some individual exceptions existed, but nothing that reached the level of any society’s conscience.; and in a post-Christian world WWP-like organizations will dry up or not even get started–we are heading there though.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:23pmRidiculousness is the only “word” I can think of to express how I fill on the matter. Sounds pretty stupid to me. Someone should tell this charity its not about religion, its about the soldiers. I would send my money to another charity. Why should they care where the money comes from? As long as it is going to the right cause. If it came from a atheist organization, would they be saying the same thing? The word religion means belief. So in that regard, atheism is also a belief and they should not accept anything from them either. Just saying. It sounds like Obama and democratic politics have evolved in this charity.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:20pmI bet a lot of the Wounded Worriors pray for GOD’s grace and blessing as they work toward recovery. To play politics with money given for the WOUNDED WORRIORS!!! is idiotic and a huge mistake. I will now give to other organizations that serve the same purpose!

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:20pmI am so done with supporting WWF and anyone else with similar PC hang ups. I am so sick of listening to all the hatred from the left and the leaders they elect, most of who so readily support their attacks on anyone of faith. One of key freedoms these warriors protect is “Freedom of religion”. I served in the military and to this day continue to support all those who followed after me… But so many things we have loved about our country are changing and/or disappearing. It is now so obvious that I can’t understand how any thinking person would actually die for a dieing nation and an administration that holds them in contempt, along with the faiths they believe in.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:13pmSGBT… With all due respect, the story is accurate. My children attend this school & it was simply a school fundraiser. My youngest was so excited to help the wounded veterans & planned to case the neighborhood for others that wanted to give. It is my understanding that it had nothing to do with logos, hats, merchandise… just giving.

Feb. 2, 2013 at 9:22amSally, my children attend this academy as well. You are CORRECT that this was to be a simple fundraising challenge for the kids. The story is accurate. My children are heartbroken. WWP guidelines DO NOT say donations from religious orgainzations will not be accepted. I guess WWP will accept money from Christians as long as they do it “in secret”. Not gonna fly. I did some research into WWP financials and it appears they, too, have signed on to the war on religion (that all good lefties deny is happening). No more donations from this house. I’ll go straight to a local wounded warrior. Also, I’ve told simply EVERYONE (and I mean everyone) I know about this farce of a “charity”. Even non-Christians are outraged.
WWP backtrack and apology in 5…4…3…2…1…(it’s in the leftie playbook)
May God continue to Bless Pastor Cooley.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:12pmI am shocked and saddened, there are only 3 charities are donated to last year, WWP, Mercury One and Salvation Army. I even did a fund raiser for WWP, I couldn’t combine it with a campaign event but that is expected, they knew we were a 912 group, I’m not sure they knew what it meant. I hope this is resolved. WWP does so much good, I would hate to think they are gone too.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:09pmThis is a crock! The WWP website says nothing about “religious in nature”.
It does state “please bear in mind WWP fundraisers cannot be sexual or political in nature and cannot be partnered with alcohol brands.”
Now- it’s time to find out what the problem here is. I know I will be calling the closest office tomorrow in Nashville to voice my anger.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:07pmI have given thousand$ to Wounded Warriors, donated to Tough Mudder events, and promoted their cause for years. Kicking God out of the foxhole (can I still use that word?) is repulsive and repugnant. I changed my giving to Special Forces Wounded Warriors Project several years ago. I know they believe in God.
Special Forces Prayer:
Almighty God, who art the Author of liberty and the Champion of the oppressed, hear our prayer.
We, the men of Special Forces, acknowledge our dependence upon Thee in the preservation of human freedom.
So with us as we seek to defend the defenseless and to free the enslaved.
May we ever remember that our nation, whose motto is “In God We Trust,” expects that we shall acquit ourselves with honor, that we may never bring shame among our faith, our families, or our fellow men.
Grant us wisdom from Thy mind, courage from Thine heart, strength from Thine arm, and protection by Thine hand.
It is for Thee that we do battle, and to Thee belongs the victor’s crown. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and glory, forever.
Amen.

Feb. 1, 2013 at 7:01pmSounds pretty silly/stupid to me. We’ve contributed to WWP in the past, but my wife has noted the large numbers of mailings we’ve received along with numerous tv ads, none of which are cheap. If they’re spending this much money to raise money it makes a person wonder how much of what they raise goes to the “wounded warriors”.
