Oregon Baker Faces State Investigation After Refusing to Make Same-Sex Couple’s Wedding Cake

(Photo: KATU)
An Oregon man may have broken the law and is facing a state investigation after refusing to bake a cake for a same-sex couple’s wedding, KATU reports.
KGW has details on the story:
It started on Jan. 17 when a mother and daughter showed up at Sweet Cakes by Melissa looking for the perfect wedding cake.
“My first question is what’s the wedding date,” said owner Aaron Klein. “My next question is bride and groom’s name … the girl giggled a little bit and said it’s two brides.”
Klein apologized to the women and told them he and his wife do not make cakes for same-sex marriages. Klein said the women were disgusted and walked out.
“I believe that marriage is a religious institution ordained by God,” said Klein. “A man should leave his mother and father and cling to his wife … that to me is the beginning of marriage.”
[...]
“I’d rather have my kids see their dad stand up for what he believes in then to see him bow down because one person complained.”
One of the women filed a complaint on January 28– also saying Klein referred to them as “abominations unto the Lord”– and now the Oregon Attorney General’s civil enforcement officers are investigating the claim.
But Klein says he never used harsh language and has no problem with homosexuals; he just doesn’t want to be a part of their marriage.
“I honestly did not mean to hurt anybody, didn’t mean to make anybody upset, [it’s] just something I believe in very strongly,” he told KATU.
When asked whether he’d be willing to lose his business over the matter, Klein said: “If I have to be to, I guess, be penalized for my beliefs, then I guess, well, that’ll be what it is.”
The case now presents a unique legal dilemma, according to reports, since Oregon law forbids discrimination based on sexual orientation, and the U.S. Constitution protects Klein’s freedom of religion.
Klein has two weeks to file his official account what happened before the attorney general’s office decides how to proceed.
KATU has more on the story, including an interview with Klein:

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 2:25amhttp://data.lambdalegal.org/pdf/fs_oregon-equality-act.pdf — I cringe when I hear Washington, Oregon, and California more so than the other leftist states.
This guy is screwed….I guess he should think about moving his business to a more freedom loving state.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 1:48amOh for heaven’s sake, things have gone beyond the point of ridiculous. I, for one, will never accept a “marriage” between two males or females. The whole point of marriage is to legitimize any children produced by a couple.
Two guys, or two gals are incapable of producing a child on their own. They always need a third party. That’s because “gay marriage” is unnatural, and against all the Laws of Nature. Yes, a man and a woman can be married and NOT produce any children, but their marriage is still within the Laws of Nature.
Maybe they don’t want children; or maybe there is an infertility problem. It doesn’t matter because a marriage between a man and a woman is normal and natural.
It’s time for these freaks of Nature to stop trying to force their insane ideas on the rest of us. Go have sex with whatever can legally consent. I don’t care what you do. Just don’t expect me to “celebrate” your insanity.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 1:45amIt’s inspiring to see someone take a stand on principals. Let’s hope he doesn’t back down. I would contribute to a defense fund or a fund to set him up in business in another state. For the complainants, just take your business to another baker and tell your friends not to go to his bakery. It’s his financial loss and you and he get to stand by your principals, rather than forcing him to accept yours.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 1:36amIn my younger days, I would have after the bar closed parties at my place. We started getting a lot of party crashers. My cousin and I made a chocolate cake with a couple boxes of X-Lax in the frosting. Since these people had to drive Inter State 5 to get home, I was advised the next day that there were several cars parked along the edge of the freeway. I admire this man but would be very tempted to make them a special chocolate cake.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 1:24amOur freedom of religion is at stake and we need people with some influence and power to step up. I wonder how long before or if our churches will stand up and help individuals like this. America needs its churches to do something. Don’t be fooled this is going to effect them eventually and they are just standing on the sidelines hoping that if they stay quiet they will be left alone. If the churches with influence just watch and do nothing then one day they will be the ones who are getting sued for denying membership into their churches or refusing to marry gays.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 1:02amI think the issue here is that it is a homosexual wedding cake. He didn’t say he wouldn’t sell any cake to them….just that he wouldn’t do a wedding cake. That is a subject matter issue. Maybe he can argue it that way. Like, he probably wouldn’t do a porno cake or an “I hate God” cake or a “National witches and warlocks Day” cake or “We love Bin Laden”. Unfortunately Pandora’s Box has been opened and there are a lot of Pandora lovers out there. This might be a tough go.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 12:47amThis also happens with others. Like a photographer who refused to shoot a gay wedding. The couple sued and he lost out nearly $10,000. I would put in a contract that you are able to wear a shirt(beliefs) during the wedding. If they do not care for it, then they could find another photographer. Perhaps a gay photographer over charges and this couple wanted to pay less. Now the interesting part is will the “violence against women act” have this kind of garbage in it to call this abuse? I’m sure their is also a gay bakery too they could of gotten their cake.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 12:44amWhy would you be so stupid, so stubborn, as to want to give them your business ?
I think this is a set up,two lesbians seeking some attention
First we had Bill Clinton telling our kids that blow jobs, was not sex
Now we have Obama telling kids that having same sex partners, is cool , and nothing to be ashamed of

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 12:39amThere is a three stage process that’s repeated in history.
1. Allow me.
2. Approve me.
3. Join me.
It used to be that homosexuality could not be openly practiced, and people yearned to be ALLOWED. Then the laws were changed, and people finally enjoyed the freedom guaranteed in the Constitution.
However, openly homosexual people feel uncomfortable because, while homosexuality is now tolerated, it’s not universally approved. So now there is a yearning for APPROVAL.
Lawsuits like the one forming here are attempts to force people to approve, but approval won’t be enough either. After religious liberty is crushed, stage 3. In fact, it’s already happening in some places.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 2:54amIn addition to what you stated, let’s apply the Darwinish atheist approach. I’m talking about evolution and instincts. I think homosexuals don’t really accept themselves any more than people of other addictions do. The problem will be forever within them no matter how they try to convince themselves otherwise. I think they are trying to convince themselves into acceptance of their behavior is by mainstreaming it. I think the fatal flaw is that having same-sex preference is incompatible with human instinct. Perhaps the XY sex-determination system identifies what you are and triggers the appropriate subroutine in your instincts. Leftist progressives always try to point out genetic development flaws only when it advances their ideology and would never acknowledge this. Wait a minute……I think there was mention about this in the past few years and how to medicate the same-sex intolerant.

The courts are too overcrowded with frivolous lawsuits as is.
They need to be handling real criminal cases, not cake disputes.

I think this baker and his wife should be able to refuse service to anyone, if it compromises their own beliefs.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 12:06amI support marriage, and if you’re gay and want to marry, then marry. HOWEVER, not everyone agrees with me, and I don’t support trying to force others to agree with me. That would be intolerant of me.
Christians are often accused to trying to force their beliefs on others when they simply TALK about their faith, yet many of the same people who make that accusation actually try to force their beliefs on others.
If a baker doesn’t want to cater your gay wedding because it’s against his religious faith, find a different baker. The baker tolerates your wedding; he’s not trying to stop your from getting married; he just doesn’t wish to participate. But you who try to force him to participate against his faith are being intolerant.
Practice tolerance, and leave this man to his faith.

Posted on February 2, 2013 at 11:52pmI wish all you so-called Christians would follow in your Lord and Saviour’s footsteps. Loving and accepting of all. Instead you worship Him in word only but you live to hate those you don’t understand.
And if any of you think Jesus said anything about gays, you’re in the wrong testament folks. Follow Jesus’ life and teachings or stop pretending you are Christians. You are not.
