Former Navy SEAL & ‘American Sniper’ Author Chris Kyle Reportedly Killed at TX Lodge

Former Navy SEAL and bestselling author of the book “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History” Chris Kyle was killed at the Rough Creek Lodge in Texas Saturday, NBC DFW reports.

WFAA adds:

Two people were killed Saturday at a gun range in Erath County. Three sources tell News 8 that one of the victims was Chris Kyle, a former Navy SEAL and author of the New York Times bestselling book, “American Sniper.”

Kyle was shot point-blank while helping another soldier who is recovering from post traumatic stress syndrome, News 8 learned.

An alert was issued for the suspect, who was reportedly captured in Lancaster, south of Dallas. The suspect was believed to be highly trained with military experience.Β  [Emphasis added]

KXAS-TV has more:

Reports indicate the suspect actually took off in Kyle’s car and, according to KHOU, officials say the second victim may have been the suspect’s neighbor.

Lancaster police later confirmed that the suspect Eddie Ray Routh was arrested Saturday night and is expected to be charged with murder.Β  A spokesman for Lancaster police said officers flagged Routh and took him into custody at Interstate 35 and Camp Wisdom Road after a brief chase.

WFAA-TV released the following photo of Routh late Saturday night, but did not specify when the photo was taken:

Routh reportedly attempted to flee when approached by officers and crashed into a squad car.

Blaze Front Page Editor Jon Seidl spent time on the same ranch where the shooting occurred earlier this fall and describes it as a sprawling, secluded area “in the middle of nowhere.”Β  He recalls there being several shooting stations.Β  It is also the host site in December for the annual Spartan adventure race.

The website’s description reads:

No matter what your individual style, Rough Creek Lodge and Resort is a β€œhave-it-all” place for our β€œwant-it-all” guests.

Rough Creek Lodge , Resort and Dallas Conference Center is nestled on 11,000 acres in the foothills of the picturesque Texas Hill Country. Located 90 minutes southwest of Dallas Fort Worth, Texas, our exquisite grounds boast 57 stylish guestrooms and suites, 4 exclusive cabins, and 2 opulent guest houses. Our Dallas lodging is finely decorated with sophisticated fabric, furniture and artwork to create a feel of rustic elegance for our guests.

Kyle was well-known both in his field and by the media, earning the nickname of “the devil of Ramadi” by insurgents, and “America’s deadliest sniper” at home.

You may also remember the time he punched former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura in the face.

Kyle served four tours of duty in Iraq and had 160 kills as a Navy SEAL, NBC DFW reports.Β  According to the Stephenville Empire-Tribune, he made his longest successful shot after he spotted an insurgent with a rocket launcher 2,100 yards (about 1.2 miles) away, near a U.S. Army convoy.

He is married and the father of two.

Before his death, Kyle weighed in on the gun control debate for SHOT Show 2013:

Jack Murphy at the Special Operations Forces Situation Report (SOFREP) wrote this moving note Saturday night:

I am saddened to have to announce the tragic loss of another one of our own.Β  This has been a hard year for the Special Operations community, perhaps the SEAL community most of all.

Today Chris Kyle was shot and killed at a shooting range at the Rough Creek Lodge in Texas, murdered along with a second individual.

Chris had been volunteering his time to help Marine Corps veterans suffering from PTSD and mentoring them.Β  Part of this process involved taking these veterans to the range where one of them snapped and killed Chris and his neighbor for reasons that remain unknown at this time.Β  The perpetrator then stole Chris’ vehicle in an attempt to escape but we have received word that the police have since arrested him.

You can read the rest of the note at SOFREP.

Geraldo comes from the era of the fake news reporting brought on by a CIA program dubbed CIA News Network, later released to the public as the world’s first 24 hour news station.

It’s funny that we all made fun of Baghdad Bob, while we were all convinced this guy was serious:

This is why no one ever trusts the media anymore when it comes to things like Aurora, Sandy Hook, and I’m the the theories that will pop up over Kyle’s death…because it is obvious they are willing to stage news and reports.

Glenn never covers this though in his reports about media fakery…which would lead some into questioning Beck.

This are a few problems with this story. First of all, Rough Creek Lodge DOES NOT allow invitations to an open range without a guide. Really? A name like Chris Kyle would be wined an dined. Everyone on the property is registered. Make no mistake about that. WFAA reported witnesses say they saw the two men shot at 3:30 and saw the suspect drive off in a black truck but Stephenville police weren’t dispatched until 6:00p.m. Did the witnesses not dial 911? This is a high profile 5 star resort. These 3 men were not the only ones present today. It’s ironic that being in the second smallest county in the state of Texas, the has been no rumors or reports of what happened, where news ALWAYS travels like wildfire. Sandy Hook, Rough Creek, and other high profile murders. Wake up America!!

You conspiracy theorist people disgust me. We have one of our heroes killed by a marine suffering from PTSD and all you can do is point the finger and say the government did it. What the hell is wrong with you? One of you said it’s suspicious because the shooter had PTSD. This isn’t an isolated incident. People with PTSD have killed before. all it takes is the proper stimuli and they snap and think they’re back on the battlefield. No one can predict what it may be. We had a case a few years ago where it happen to a shrink that was stabbed to death by a patient suffering from PTSD. It usually goes unreported in the news due to it not involving a high profile person. And no I’m not saying to disarm or vets. I trust them. I am one. then we have the notion that the time lines don’t add up. THAT’S CALLED MEDIA COOPERATION WITH THE POLICE! I work in law enforcement and the police ask the media to fudge preliminary facts all the time. It helps give the perp a false sense of security. Studies have shown that when the media gives out more than is needed when the perp is on the run they tend to make less mistakes and are harder to catch. When the media cooperates and releases as little as possible the perp is more likely to slip up because they don’t think they’re being actively searched for. You people need to get help for your delusions.

As for Chris Kyle, I met the man on a book tour and he seemed a gentleman who truly loved his country. R.I.P. Chris.

Not only that..he was training police officers how to be expert snipers..you know..for the coming police state.? You might want to google the “drills” that have been taking place over some major cities for the last year..helicopters and gun fire..and telling the people..go back to sleep..just doing drills..so..”Go back to sleep!” Everything is just fine..

You conspiracy theorists are disgusting, but I know it’s not just a matter of being crazy. The problem is, you want there to be a conspiracy because you can’t handle the fact that you might have to pay just a bit more taxes in order to provide mental health support to your fellow citizens, especially those who serve.

You’d rather this story be about some shadow big government out of control. In reality, this story re-affirms the fact that we all owe something to our community and to other citizens, and that “freedom” doesn’t mean you can ignore everyone else and so whatever you want. You don’t want to acknowledge the fact that demonizing the government and defunding it whenever you can makes the government unable to provide the kind of care and support needed for the weakest or sickest in society. As long as that is true, these tragedies will continue to happen.

Notice how NONE of these gun-violence shooters look at all like Kyle or anyone else who truly supports the 2nd Amendment. These gun-violence shooters look like crazy, trashy, homeless types who would NEVER be able to survive in this world if it weren’t for their overly-protective mommies and government assistance. Am I really the only one who finds this rash of shootings just WAY TOO COINCIDENTAL to the current gun-control debate? Am I the only one who wants to see if Eddie Ray Routh, Adam Lanza, or James Holmes (or any of the other sick twists) would go glassy eyed and start to play solitaire with an imaginary deck if you calmly asked them, “How about a game of cards?”

PS The allusion is to the 1962 version of the movie “The Manchurian Candidate” that is the GOOD version with Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury!

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry about an American icon who survives 4 tours only to be murdered by a fellow veteran diagnosed with PTSD. This incident further primes the pump for legislators to prohibit ALL veterans diagnosed with Post-traumatic Stress (mental) Disorder from ever legally possessing weapons due to mental deficiency. If any of you vets admitted to any form of service-related stress to latch onto the VA teat you have effectively forever provided the government the medical justification needed to declare you mentally unfit to own or possess a firearm. But that will probably be moot before too long…

Today Chris Kyle was shot and killed at a shooting range at the Rough Creek Lodge in Texas, murdered along with a second individual. Chris had been volunteering his time to help Marine Corps veterans suffering from PTSD and mentoring them. Part of this process involved taking these veterans to the range where one of them snapped and killed Chris and his neighbor for reasons that remain unknown at this time. The perpetrator then stole Chris’ vehicle in an attempt to escape but we have received word that the police have since arrested him.”

Can one of you guys explain (from the military logic standpoint) why taking someone with PTSD to a shooting range is a good idea? Presumably Routh is being treated by a psychiatrist, at what point is a patient considered stable enough to visit a range? I image sounds of gunfire negatively affects people with PTSD (combat), so are there guidelines established for the “supporter” dictating when someone should or shouldn’t go? What is the likelihood of someone snapping and shooting a friendly? What is the likelihood that this guy was a ******** in normal life and was unfortunately permitted to join the military and has now killed someone good?

PTSD doesn’t make warriors forget what side they are on or who their friends are, otherwise there would be more incidents downrange of soldiers attacking their own. I think this PTSD thing is just the cover story for a targeted hit. Kyle had a price on his head.

      All –
PTSD is not black and white.

It can be something as simple as becoming uncomfortable when driving down an American street with thoughts that maybe someone has put an IED on the side of the road, it can involve violent dreams where your central nervous system has not shut down all the way and you wake up punching your wife in her face. It can be as extreme as actually hallucinating and blacking out with no memory of what you did during that period of time, temporarily living in an alternate reality. This last kind is what usually makes the movies and the news.

It is not the exclusive realm of those who have experienced combat. Anyone who has experienced a trauma can have PTSD (rape victims, children who witnessed their mother being beaten, people who have witnessed a murder). Sometimes the depth of the problem is not realized until the person has an β€œepisode”. For instance, you may feel uncomfortable driving quickly through close quarters such as buildings and that is the worst you think it gets for you (for years), then a sight, a smell or a voice or a combination, sends it deeper.

The brain is a fabulous and complex thing and we do not understand it 100%, when we do God help us. Before making a condemnation of their actions, I think I will wait to see the details.

Melika, In answer, I am a combat Marine, served 2 tours in Iraq and suffered multiple injuries from an IED near Fallujah in September 2004. One injury is a penetrating brain injury to the right frontal and temporal lobes. I do suffer from what we now call PTSD or PTSS. I also know many other veterans who have PTSD. In my own case I can tell you that shooting is very therapeutic for me.I was an infantry machinegunner and involved in many gun battles. There is a big difference in being in a gun battle and going to the range. The primary difference being the lack of threat on the range and the difference in the sound of shooting, and being shot AT. For me, a trigger for flashbacks has to be a very specific sound, or perceived threat. It doesnt happen just by being around a firearm or by shooting. That is me in particular though, and I cannot speak to the unique triggers of others. However, I have been on multiple hunting and shooting trips with other wounded veterans, and we are always more laid back and relaxed when with one another and armed. Being armed usually calms true combat veterans because it gives us a sense of security not felt when we dont have a firearm. This is the reason that time on a range with other veterans can be so helpful. If this shooter was a true combat veteran, I tend to doubt that PTSD was a factor. I tend more to suppose he was either coached or commanded.

Doubtful. I am a former ARMY Medic and while serving over in Korea and Virginia, I personally witnessed as well as heard about a couple of cases of people with PTSD having very intense flashbacks.

I was working a graveyard shift at the Urgent Care Clinic at our local TMC on Camp Casey and we had a young soldier come in who was delusional to the point that he honestly believed he was back in Iraq… It took an MP, the patient’s battle buddy, a nurse and myself about 3 hours to guide him back into reality.

From an eyewitness account from one of the Medics I knew. Just before I got to my unit over there, we had a couple of soldiers horsing around with an airsoft bb gun in the barracks. One of them shot it at a Sgt. who’s prior tour had been in Iraq. He said he pulled out a knife and started to low crawl from behind and towards the soldier who had the toy gun. The soldiers were able to restrain him before he could do anything.

PTSD is a very real disorder. Rest easy folks, I really think that is what we saw here.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Kyle and his family. Thank you for everything and R.I.P.

Mil Dot your comments about these people being taken out because of a skill is mind numbing. Anyone with decent knowledge of the weapon system and ballistics of that round can do the same amount of damage. Most of the bigger calibers .30 and up start to tumble at about a thousand yards. So with that being said, a person with a .300 Win Mag and a properly dialed scope can easily hit center mass of a target at 700-800 yards with not much difficultly. A .338 and your distance goes out even further before tumbling. 800-1000 are common in engagements. Add wind and it is little tougher. Anyway my point is that most all with experience with high power rifles would be dangerous against these people you all think “killed/ assassinated” this true American hero. So in your thinking, I have multiple times hit targets out past 1200 yrds with my .338, that must mean I am on a hit list?

      @DeltaBravo:

It’s not the skill with a rifle they’re talking about. It’s all the OTHER stuff that goes into guerrilla warfare. Hiding. Moving unseen. Sniping (it takes more control to do this, than to take out an elk at 1000 yards). Military discipline. Whomever said these Green Berets will be force multipliers, when SHTF, is correct. If word gets out just WHO these people are, look for them to sit in Leavenworth for the duration of the (likely, IMNSHO) coming hostilities, or look for them to meet untimely ends.

These bass turds aren’t playing games.

John Noveske’s fatal vehicular accident was reported to be alcohol related. He was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from his vehicle. The only similarity is that both left behind wives and young children.

Terrible tragedy this murder. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the surviving family of the second victim. RIP.

@BonnieBlue2A Interestingly, except for the β€œstandard” police-spokesman report, there are virtually no significant details about Noveske’s accident β€” no witnesses, no pictures, no audio tapes or videos. Was Noveske speeding? Was alcohol involved? Do skid marks on the road indicate he tried to stop? For all we know, he could have been forced off the road by a second vehicle? Funnt how this happened right after he released his report showing the correlation between school shootings and psychiatric medications.

And… Don’t forget gun maker and outspoken 2A advocate Keith Ratliff who was recently murdered – shot in the head surrounded by guns – none of which were the murder weapon.

So, we have three… count them, three, dead, outspoken 2A supporters who have recently spoken out fiercely against the governments movement to ban guns. Three within a matter of weeks? Coincidence? That’s up to you.

Seriously!?! I am really getting tired of folks blaming Bush for our nation’s woes.

Bush also got a bad hand dealt to him soon after he took office, but did he ever blame it on Clinton? HELL NO! He manned up, took the reins and led this country the best way he saw fit. He may not have been the smartest guy or made the best choices, but I honestly believe he meant well even through some of the big mistakes his administration made,

I’d like to point out that you don’t see Bush berating Obama for the past four years. President Bush is definitely a man of good character.

Yeah, I’m sure it was the same government that wants to spend another ten or twenty years in Afghanistan, Iraq, and maybe Iran. I would be willing to bet Routh is an anti-government nut. I’m not saying he’s a Republican or even a Tea Party guy. He’s probably beyond Tea Party. I know extreme anti-government people his age, and some of them have a lot of contempt for our military.
