Former Soldier Charged With Capital Murder in the Death of Chris Kyle
GLEN ROSE, Texas (TheBlaze/AP) — A 25-year-old man was charged with murder in connection with a shooting at a central Texas gun range that killed former Navy SEAL and “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle and his friend, the Texas Department of Public Safety said Sunday.
Sgt. Lonny Haschel said in a news release that 25-year-old Eddie Ray Routh of Lancaster was arraigned Saturday evening on two counts of capital murder. Officer Kyle Roberts at the Erath County Jail said Routh arrived there Sunday morning and is being held on a combined $3 million bond. Roberts did not have information on whether Routh had a lawyer.

Haschel said Erath County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a shooting at the Rough Creek Lodge, west of Glen Rose, at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Police found the bodies of Kyle, 38, and Chad Littlefield, 35, at the shooting range about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth. Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said he did not know where Kyle and Littlefield were hit because he had not yet received the medical examiner’s report.
Kyle and Littlefield had taken Routh to the range, said Travis Cox, the director of a nonprofit Kyle helped found. Littlefield was Kyle’s neighbor and “workout buddy,” Cox told The Associated Press on Sunday morning.
“What I know is Chris and a gentleman – great guy, I knew him well, Chad Littlefield – took a veteran out shooting who was struggling with PTSD to try to assist him, try to help him, try to, you know, give him a helping hand and he turned the gun on both of them, killing them,” Cox said.
Police said Routh opened fire on Kyle and Littlefield around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, and then fled in a Ford pickup truck, which Bryant said was Kyle’s truck. At about 8 p.m., Routh arrived at his home in Lancaster, about 17 miles southeast of Dallas. Police arrested him after a brief pursuit and took him to the Lancaster Police Department.
Records show Routh previously lived at Marine Corps base Camp LeJeune, N.C., according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The U.S. military confirmed Sunday that he was in the Marines from 2006 to 2010, and was deployed to Iraq in 2007. His current duty status is listed as reserve.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear. A knock on the door at Routh’s last known address went unanswered Sunday. A for-sale sign was in front of the cream-colored wood-framed home.
Capt. Jason Upshaw with the Erath County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Sunday afternoon revealing Routh used a semi-automatic handgun in the attack, and it was later found at his home. He said Routh has not made any statements revealing a potential motive, though he speculated that Routh may be suffering from some “mental illness.”
“I don’t know that we’ll ever know,” the sheriff said. “He’s the only one that knows that.”
Kyle, a decorated veteran, wrote the best-selling book, “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History,” detailing his 150-plus kills of insurgents from 1999 to 2009. According to promotional information from book publisher William Morrow, Kyle deployed to Iraq four times.
Kyle’s nonprofit, FITCO Cares, provides at-home fitness equipment for emotionally and physically wounded veterans.
“Chris was literally the type of guy if you were a veteran and needed help he’d help you,” Cox said. “And from my understanding that’s what happened here. I don’t know how he came in contact with this gentleman, but I do know that it was not through the foundation.”
Cox described Littlefield as a gentle, kind-hearted man who often called or emailed him with ideas for events or fundraisers to help veterans.
“It was just two great guys with Chad and Chris trying to help out a veteran in need and making time out of their day to help him. And to give him a hand. And unfortunately this thing happened,” Cox said.
Craft International, Kyle’s security training company, had scheduled a $2,950-per-person civilian training event at Rough Creek Lodge called the “Rough Creek Shoot Out!” for March 1-3. The price included lodging, meals and shooting instruction. Kyle was scheduled to teach the first class, called “precision rifle.”
Kyle is survived by his wife, Taya, and their two children, Cox said.

There was a guy I used to shoot with. I found out he was suffering from occasional brief bouts of a dissociative disorder of some kind. I never seem to have any way to fit it in my schedule to go shooting with him these days.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 1:30pmThe real story will come out in dribs and drabs over the next few weeks.
I hope that we don’t find out that Routh was an angry, suicidally depressed man with violent tendencies. Because if so, then I question the judgement of attempting to council him on a gun range.
Honoring the Military brotherhood and trying to help veterans is a very noble thing. But it’s trumped by a simple common sense rule, “Never give an angry suicidal man a gun.”

I am no Chris Kyle he was from all accounts a true American hero at a time when the word hero is handed out to anyone just wearing a badge, he truly is a hero. Here’s my point, I too invite these Marines to my house for holidays and birthdays many are here in 29 Palms w no family. I also take them to the range and we help each other telling stories, talking about life etc. these Marines are all of our responsibilities and one case such as this will not deter me or my family from trying to be there any way we can. Don’t be to judgmental after all these guy’s are just humans and one good deed could potentially change their life around. God Bless them all, Oathkerpers.org

This can be you so before rushing to mindless judgement how would you like being prevented from gun ownership strictly due to combat related issues. Posted on February 3, 2013 at 3:49pmWe’ll find out over the next few weeks what the story is.
And as the writers above have pointed out, it is a matter of degree. PTSD isn’t a diagnosis of insanity or suicide. There’s nothing wrong with taking someone who has PTSD to a gun range and counciling him.
There is a problem however in taking someone who is suicidal, and violent to a gun range for councilling, Vet or no vet, it’s a terrible idea.
I have a feeling…no evidence…but a strong feeling that this guy was mentally unhinged, violent, and likely suicidal. I believe that he was a worst case scenerio, and Kris Kyle wanted to help him, because he had been successful before.
When you council a vet about the utter SUCK of combat, it helps if the counciller knows what the hell he’s talking about. Kris Kyle is a poster boy for knowing what combat is all about. I believe that the guy went loopy, had a gun, and shot him, and another.
If I’m right then this is a hard lesson about giving an angry, violent, and unhinged guy a gun. The idea that it will help him to heal if people trust him with weapons, and treat him as normal might not work for everyone. Regardless, this person likely needed professional help in a safe setting. Ironically, he’ll likely get it now.

PTSD in and of itself is no reason to keep someone from doing something he loves. PTSD does not mean crazy it does not mean you are a potential killer. I am sure as the story unfolds we will find many other issues in this guys life besides PTSD.
Please refrain from making the same knee jerk reactions that the ******** do.

Where is the range relative to the truck? Did they walk to the range, drive to the range or ride an ATV (which is available at the ranch) We do not have those answers yet.
2) My husband and various friends, neighbors and family go shooting on our property. Sometimes I go, sometimes I stay up at the house. I don’t go check on them each time the shooting stops (sometimes it is as much a social event as anything). If the shooting has stopped and they are still not back an hour later, I would begin to worry, grab my gun and take a look.
3) We do not know what this guy’s level of PTSD was. PTSD IS NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL!!!

The Boeing 767 that hit the WTC was flying v=264m/s with m=179000kg. The heat capacity of steel is c=0.466J/K/kg, requiring dT=1100K to melt. Therefore, the kinetic energy alone of UA Flight could melt 12.2 million kg of steel. [ KE = 0.5*m*v^2 TE = c*M*dT; when KE=TE we find this value].
Steel is p~8000kg/m^3, so V=1561 cubic meters of steel would be melted [p/M=V]. The maximum width of the fuselage is w=5.5 meters, therefore the 767 could melt through x=V/pi/(w/2)^2= 64 meters of steel from kinetic energy alone. The WTC towers were ~70 meters wide, but one must remember they were not composed of solid steel. It takes less energy to shear metal than to bring it to its melting point, so yes, an airplane can (and did) bring down the WTC.
Brush up on your “physics.”

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 4:34pm@joepsy-op A36 structural steel can support 89,000 pounds w/ a single square inch, so 5 sq in would support that entire load. A single column has twice that much cross sectional area, and we aren’t even considering the 4in concrete floors which have great compression strength, or the modules of inertia from the shape of the columns. In addition, a large commercial airliner can NOT exceed much over 300mph at sea level, it weighs too much creating more drag and the air is much more dense.
@000degrees you certainly prove your lack of education, try some history like the 45′ impact of the empire st bld. The people inside said “the building swayed like a pendulum for 30 sec” this is why no one was rescued from the roof. Witnesses on the street agreed “It sounded like a can being crushed, the 5sec later an explosion” ie the av gas ignited, much more volatile than jet fuel. Fuel bombs don’t work in confined areas, it takes too much oxygen.
No firefighter EVER stated seeing a plane inside either tower, the N tower communication was down (by design) and those in the S tower stated “small pockets of fire”. All were assassinated by the port authority to prevent the truth from being exposed.
It was a HOAX, and those who continue to deny it are only adding to the problems this country continues to face over the past eleven years.

My experience (which obviously does not cover everything) with PTSD is that the people who have it are not a danger to anyone else. They have urges to run away, or they break down crying. Or they do things that some might think to be strange, like sleeping in the tub with a rifle for a few months.
They have no interest in hurting anyone else. I’ve been shooting with them and never worried for a second.
IMHO, there’s something else going on here.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 5:53pmThe media always does this with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), because they have no idea what it is.
PTSD doesn’t turn people into Shooting Psychopaths, in fact it does the opposite with people, it make them not want to pick-up a firearm at all, and their is a great deal of anxiety, fear, feeling more aware and a paranoia. The paranoia is not of other people or the government, but that something bad is going to happen in a hypervigilance kind of way.
Even doctors misdiagnos and mistreat PTSD, because it’s an easy label to put on someone, just like doctors give everyone with a type depression and or mental illness the doctor has never dealt with before, the label of bipolar disorder, because doctors don’t like looking at their patient and saying, I don’t know whats wrong with you, now try this pill………

1) This guy could be growing a Muslim beard. I zoomed in and sure enough as per M-mad’s instructions, the beard is untrimmed, but the mustache is neatly trimmed. Very suspicious.
2) Remember Hasan? What excuse did the state media unanimously concoct to explain away his jihad attack? Yep, you got it, PTSD, even though he had never been deployed. The media diagnosed this guy overnight, but we still don’t know what happened in Benghazi. It doesn’t matter anyway.
3) Let’s say Routh did have a delusional episode. Why did he then run back to the parking lot, steal Kyle’s car and take off? Does that sound like someone having a delusional episode? He then went to his sister’s house and told her what he had done. Oh, so he DID remember the event. This all sounds as credible as Hillary’s concussion. The guy may very well have mental problems, but I doubt he was legally insane when he committed the act.

Several types of medications can help symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder improve.
Antipsychotics. In some cases, you may be prescribed a short course of antipsychotics to relieve severe anxiety and related problems, such as difficulty sleeping or emotional outbursts.
Antidepressants. These medications can help symptoms of both depression and anxiety. They can also help improve sleep problems and improve your concentration. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medications sertraline (Zoloft) and paroxetine (Paxil) are FDA-approved for the treatment of PTSD.
Anti-anxiety medications. These drugs also can improve feelings of anxiety and stress.
Prazosin. If your symptoms include insomnia or recurrent nightmares, a drug called prazosin (Minipress) may help. Prazosin, which has been used for years in the treatment of hypertension, also blocks the brain’s response to an adrenaline-like brain chemical called norepinephrine. Although this drug is not specifically approved for the treatment of PTSD, prazosin may reduce or suppress nightmares in many people with PTSD.

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 10:12pmIf the NRA had it’s way, this guy, having been diagnosed with PTSD, would have been entered into a national database for mentally ill people and would not have been allowed to buy a gun. Of course, if he already had a gun that’s one thing, and he could have bought a gun of any kind legally from a private vendor. So it wouldn’t have made any difference.
But the NRA position to try to take guns away from the mentally ill is disturbing. Who determines who is mentally ill? Personally I find it outrageous that the NRA is supporting the idea that some anonymous government agent decides who can have guns, and whose guns will be taken away.
Unlike the NRA, I feel that our Constitutional right to keep and bear arms is prevents a government bureaucrat from denying anyone the right of gun ownership. What is more important, Freedom, or the occasional mass murder or murders such as this? He could have killed him with a rock or a big stick. Do you want to ban sticks? I vote for Freedom and the Land of the Free. There’s a price for freedom Americans! Chris Kyle made ultimate sacrifice in the fight to protect YOUR rights.
With all due respect those of you who support the NRA position can go to heck.

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 12:02amChris loved his job and being a SEAL. He liked to help and was obviously not aware that Routh was in such a serious mental level of anger. Sometimes it is hard to tell the depth of someones depression or anger until it is too late and it isn’t right to criticize Chris or his friend for trying to help. There aren’t enough programs to help many of the Vets although the VA does have programs in place to help. If a person is secretly going to do harm, there is most times no way to tell until the act is carried out, especially a Vet who has been in a combat environment. There is so much hate and killing as an outlet today in public. It is especially hard to see this as a Vet since we tend to look at other Vets as brothers and family. Sometimes the mold is broken, in this case we don’t have all the information yet and what drove this Marine to carry out this cold blooded murder against fellow Veterans. It is a sad day and time to see Chris as a SEAL and HERO of 4 tours to retire and come home to his family and be killed in this manner along with his friend. The psych evals will bring out more on what motives were there. I feel for his wife and children who thought the battle was over and they got their husband/dad back after many years of having to be on duty and wondering if he would come home. I hope that justice will be done and that the shooter will get the full penalty for premeditated murder, whatever that may be. I will pray for the families of Chris and his friend.

Wow, naturally from what you have just said, you do want the mentally ill to keep and bare arms. LOL, that is so refreshing to see that you do have you agenda. Let the nuts continue to massacre people so that the public will eventually bow to the whims of the government after being continually beaten up by the media. Hmmm, you are still transparent, aren’t you?
Oh yeah JZS, you do know who you are, just look in a mirror. But, I guess you can just be MEAT again tonight. Watch Bull Durham if you still don’t know what I am talking about.

I hate to tell you this, but the last time the federal government tryed a national database only 5 states fully complyed with the FBI background check, and all other states refused to even share information with the Fed’s. Most states opted for inhouse criminal and mental background checks and even when someone was declared mentally incompetent by their doctor, because very strict HIPAA laws ( The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ), doctors are forbidden from giving or sharing your medical information with anyone but you, so the Federal Government has screwed it self from the beginning.
I believe their are currently 5 or 8 states that have no background check compliance at all, you just walk-in and buy your firearm….I like that kind of compliance because all others don’t work……….

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 1:49amYeah, PTSD is a little overused as a diagnosis. Kind of like “autism” being used to diagnose kids who eat to much sugar at breakfast to kids with physiological-based developmental issues. So, no, not neccesarily a “bad idea” to take a fellow veteran to the shooting range. Now if we could de-politicize the fields of psychology and psychiatry and go back to using the more proper, clinical terms of ******, mongoloid, nutcase, and sick-twist, then maybe Kyle would still be alive today. Or maybe not.

No pictures, no video, no NOTHING. I can understand keeping info from the public if somebody is to stand trial. But in Sandy Hook, no one will stand trial. This will be no different. Posted on February 3, 2013 at 1:19pmIt doesn’t add up to me either. These great heroes who are returning from combat with PTSD are given psychotropic drugs, which seem to be the common denominator in all unexplainable murders these days. Why are they being given mind altering drugs which, based on the increasing the suicide and murder rates amongst our veterans, are hurting and not helping?
Was he taking these drugs? Our gov’t has conducted drug experimentation on our soldiers in the past, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they’re continuing to experiment. (very disturbing if they are) I guess we’ll get a few answers eventually, but we need to know if our gov’t is treating our veterans like lab rats.

Simpler explanations are, other things being equal, generally better than more complex ones.
Not everything is a conspiracy by some amorphous entity. Sometimes it is just what it is. Three skilled marksmen went to a range and one killed the other two. The “why” may be simple or complex. We don’t know. Try not to make things up, please.

First these are retired SEALS, so it’s not a Soviet style purge and replace with loyal officers thing. And if this were a government hitman, why we’re there so many witnesses and why was he caught si relatively easy. Nah I just think he’s a whacked out piece of crap. And if any of the lefty trolls are feeling smug about our conspiracy theories making us look silly, I’ll point out that for awhile, something like fifty percent of Democrats thought George Bush was behind 9/11. I am entirely disgusted with Americans who just don’t see the manipulation and conspiracy in our current administration. I wonder who the next target is? I hate senseless murder. That is what I hate and find so awful.
I do not know Ole Joe Cortina; however, I do feel that the biggest threat to American sovereignty is Jewish Marxism not radical Islam.
If you read my posts carefully you’ll see that I’m very consistent and for me the biggest issue facing America today is Jewish supremacy.
This is not the thread to discuss that issue unless more information becomes available but since I have your attention and I asked you this on the past post which was pertinent to the topic… How many times have 6 million Jews been Holocausted in the 20th century?
It’s a simple question and I believe that it proves that the Holocaust is pure garbage and Jewish nonsense. So when you answer once I’ll provide you at least 3 articles claiming 6 million Jews murdered in different years of the 20th century. Then what do you have to say? Other yes sir I’ve been lied to?
