Iran Claims it’s Rolled out a Stealth Fighter Jet, But Is it Real?

Iran’s newest fighter jet, Qaher-313 is unveiled by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, accompanied by top officials during a ceremony, in Tehran, Iran, Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013. (AP)

Iran has unveiled a new domestically designed and manufactured fighter jet that it says has stealth capabilities, a claim that aviation experts are already questioning.

Iranian authorities rolled out a single-seat bomber, the Qaher F-313 (“Dominant”), on Saturday to much fanfare, including an appearance by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who assured the jet is for defensive purposes only, a claim reminiscent of Iranian assurances that its nuclear program is designed for peaceful purposes.

The Tehran Times reports that Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi detailed some of the plane’s capabilities which he claims include:

•    avoiding radar detection
•    flying at low altitudes
•    carrying advanced domestically-manufactured weapons
•    taking off and landing on short runways
•    able to combat other aircraft and targets on the ground

According to Russia Today, Ahmadinejad said at the ceremony: “Iran’s defense might does not serve purposes of expansionism and aggression against other countries.”

“This project carries the message of brotherhood, peace, and security and it doesn’t pose any threat to anyone. There is no intention to interfere in any other country’s affairs,” he said.

On Iranian state television Saturday, Ahmadinejad touted Iran’s scientific achievements, even in the face of international sanctions: “Now the speed of Iran’s development in science and technology does not depend on circumstances, it depends on our will.”

“We should set higher targets. We see that it is possible, we have the capabilities,” he added.

The Tehran Times writes that the aircraft reflects Iran’s “significant achievements in the field of aerospace technology.” This as the official in charge of the project, Hassan Parvaneh, told Iran’s state-run television, “Its shape and structure is completely unique and peerless.”

The stealth claims are eliciting skepticism as they come on the heels of Iran’s admission that one of two official photos of the monkey it says it sent into space last week showed the wrong animal. Iran insists it successfully sent a monkey to space and returned it safely to Iran.

The Israeli paper Maariv interviewed aeronautical expert Tal Inbar who says the aircraft looked like a model made of fiberglass or cardboard. He said, “It’s not a plane, because that’s not how a real plane looks.”

“Iran doesn’t have the ability to build planes. Plain and simple,” Inbar added.

The Times of Israel spoke with an Israeli aerospace engineer on condition of anonymity who had a slightly different take. It reports the engineer “said that while the plane displayed by the Iranian press on Saturday was clearly not a working prototype, it integrated advanced stealth design with extreme maneuverability.”

He also believes that even though the plane can’t drop bombs, it could potentially operate as an interceptor to defend Iranian skies from foreign bombing threats. “They need a defensive interceptor that gives them the element of surprise, and it is big enough to carry real air-to-air missiles,” he said.

David Cenciotti, a pilot, Italian Air Force veteran and aviation reporter who runs the blog The Aviationist examined the photos and video of the new Qaher F-313 and is asking some big questions as to the viability of the plane. He writes:

Indeed, based on the first photographs released by the FARS News Agency, the new stealthy jet has a really peculiar design. It features hard edges and those distinctive edges and angle of the U.S. F-22 and the twin tail shape much similar to that of the F-35 Lightning II. […]

The canopy material is at least odd (based on its transparency, it looks like plexiglass or something like that).

The cockpit seems to be basic (a bit too much for a modern plane – note the lack of wirings behind the front panel and the presence of few instruments, some of those similar to those equipping small private planes…).

The nose section is so small almost no radar could fit in it.

The air intakes are extremely small (they remind those of current drones/unmanned combat aerial vehicles) whereas the engine section lacks any kind of nozzle: engine afterburners could melt the entire jet.

Iran Claims it’s Rolled out a Stealth Fighter Jet, But Is it Real?

Iranian pilot in cockpit of Iran’s new fighter jet (Photo from official Iranian news agency FARS)

Based on the above photo of an Iranian pilot sitting in the cockpit, Cenciotti concludes, “the aircraft is way too small.” Echoing the Israeli aeronautical expert Tal Inbar, Cenciotti also believes it’s “nothing more than a large mock up model” that can’t fit a real pilot.

Cenciotti also examined this video which alleges to show the Qaher F-313 in flight. He also believes “the depicted plane flies is suspect. It seems a radio-controlled scale model more than a modern fighter jet.”

Even if the aircraft doesn’t live up to the Iranian description, Cenciotti and Robert Johnson wrote in an article in Business Insider that it might one day be used to attack the U.S. Navy in the Persian Gulf:

Perhaps Iran isn’t imagining a fleet of stealthy fighter/bombers, based on some design similar to this new display, but a few dozen single seat craft with an array of missiles, a couple guns, and the ability to fly low and slow over the Gulf.

The Associated Press from Tehran provides more background on the aircraft and Iran’s military industries:

The Qaher is one of several aircraft designs rolled out by the Iranian military since 2007. Tehran has repeatedly claimed to have developed advanced military technologies in recent years but its claims cannot be independently verified because the country does not release technical details of its arsenals.

The Islamic republic launched a self-sufficiency military program in the 1980s to compensate for a Western weapons embargo that banned export of military technology and equipment to Iran. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, torpedoes, drones and fighter planes.[…]

Iran’s English-language state Press TV said Qaher was similar to the American-made F/A-18, an advanced fighter capable of dogfighting as well as penetrating enemy air defenses to strike ground targets.

Physically, Press TV said, the aircraft resembles the F-5E/F Tiger II, a much older American design that Iran has had in its arsenal since it was supplied to the U.S.-allied regime of the Shah before Iran’s 1979 revolution.

The aircraft’s introduction is one of several ways in which Iran is marking the “Ten-Day Dawn” commemorating the Iranian Revolution 34 years ago.

Besides the alleged monkey space mission and the stealth fighter, Iran announced it will unveil upgraded versions of two domestically designed tanks – the Zolfaqar and Samsam – on Monday.

Anyone who has any concept of stealth aircraft and what it takes to design and build one is laughing there arse off looking at these photos. The inlets, cockpit, leading edges, and control surfaces would all present a huge radar signature.

Yeah, I was thinking the only radar this “aircraft” would be invisible to would be Iranian-built radar.

No wait, maybe they’re telling the truth about the stealthiness. Since radar is pointed at the sky, and this static model can’t fly, then it could be called “stealthy”.

I spent 4 years in the USAF and 11 years working for Lockheed Martin. One look at the photos and video of this supposed aircraft say it’s a fake. The surfaces are uneven, the canopy does not meat the fuselage squarely, the engine’s exhaust nozzle is non-existent…Iran must have mistakenly thought the United States was full of idiots to put something like this out, it’s all a sham.

If you watch the video of the “aircraft” in flight there is an interview with the “pilot” with the aircraft rotating on it’s pedestal behind him. When the aircraft stops just short of clocking him in the head with the nose cone it steadily rocks back and forth with fairly lengthy pendulum type oscillations. I was in the air force for ten years and saw lots of aircraft rolling, stopping, rocking, etc. All kinds of short period repetitive motions. Short period because of the high mass a REAL jet has. The weight of the thing dampens out any motions very quickly. I bet someone that is good with math could take watch the video and make a fairly good guess as to the rate of rotation and length of the aircraft in the video and work out the “aircraft’ mass. I’m willing to put money that the whole thing weighs no more than 1000 lbs. The light reflecting off it reminds me VERY strongly of the bondo job on my 1985 ford escort…

Even if the rest of it WERE real, the fact that the canopy alone would present insurmountable difficulties in landing or flying the aircraft, makes this clearly a mock up. The canopy isn’t what one could call crystal clear. It is distorting everything viewed through it. The rest is plywood, fiber glass and papier mache.

The plane is made of tupperware plastic and metal made from recycled sardine cans – … its high tech computer ‘internals’ runs on 2 fire proof ethernet coxial cables that can be seen in photo – the advantage of having two ethernet cables has already proved of benefit – supplying the plane with the energy needed to fly at mach speeds – at the same time – allowing the pilot to research information about his enemy while flying – providing valuable ‘real time’ information.

Former F-15 crew chief and A&P mechanic here, and I doubt that it can fly, let alone be stealthy while doing it. It looks like a wood and fabric ultralight mock-up of a stealth aircraft, so maybe it can fly low and slow without a payload and a midget pilot, but I’m probably being way too charitable. It doesn’t appear to have enough wing to fly slow, I mean, a BD-5 has as much wing area and weighs about 350 lbs. empty…

I actually feel sorry for any Iranian pilot who tries to defend his country in this thing.

Hey Iran, I dare you to show a video of a pilot taxiing this thing to the runway and taking off. The RC model fly-by with the added sound effects isn’t going to cut it.

If you watch the video and then watch a few more that are available at the end, there’s at least one that shows a cockpit view. I don’t see any rudder pedals, and where the canopy mates with the fuselage it doesn’t look like anything that could possibly be pressurized. I also don’t see a throttle, but it may be hidden from view. This “airplane” is not an aircraft at all, never mind the idea that a country that I don’t think has ever built an airplane before has a stealth model as its first offering… This is meant as propaganda for the people of Iran; they aren’t fooling anyone else.

If you look behind the seat wear the pilot is sitting (3rd photo down), the haul of the interior of the aircraft is blue, it’s fiberglass.

The pilot seat is a F-5/T-38 (MK-7) ejection seat, these were common ejection seats in F-4 Phantom and F-5 Tiger II, Both aircraft are in the Iranian Air Force and are considered obsolete……..

“Windex factory” LOL. That was the first thing that I noticed, too.

The cockpit looks fake. The canopy is too flimsy. There is literally nothing behind the pilots seat. The seat is so high that the pilot’s knees stick above the fuselage. In fact, most of the pilot’s body is sticking outside the aircraft. The instrument panel appears to be a toy with a ribbon cable sticking out of it.

From other photos, you can see seams around the cockpit that give the appearance that this is a plywood model. The decals are oddly placed. The engine compartment looks wrong, too. I guarantee you there is nothing behind that orange plastic covering.

And as everyone knows, Iran has never produced a jet aircraft before. Hell, from this ridiculous display, Iran can’t even produce a believable plywood model.

Nice mid-air flying coffin. Iran is coming out with rushed pseudo-weapons ready to wreak havoc on nothing. As advanced people of post military/navy ground crews see this flying misfit plane. The subtleties of what’s missing or lacking in the plane to actually perform stand out. Like one person quickly picked up on, the advanced seat for a pilot. Not only is it grossly ergonomicly incorrect but it doesn’t suit an advanced aircraft design for modern air combat. Then there’s other subtle exterior compositions. Nice try, but not near what a true stealth fighter needs in air to be successful. And we know what that means huh? If you aren’t stealthy, you are seen. If you are seen, you are dead.

Well, it is a cute little thing. But I think you’re being a little presumptuous when you refer to it as “flying coffin”. That assumes that it will fly at all, unless talking about the statistically significant probability that it’s going to go flying off the end of the runway. On the other hand, the Iranians claim that this aircraft has been flown for thousands of hours?!?! Who you gonna’ believe? I don’t doubt that they really would like to have something that works, but it appears to be more Potemkin Village, than aeronautical hardware.

Their veracity remains to be seen, but that brings up another point. That canopy is so optically distorted, they better have a good avionics suite onboard. It appears that they are going to have big problems seeing through that thing.

As to stealth, sayin’ it don’t make it so. If it really does fly (big if), the radar signature will be known in short order. All one needs to do is light it up with a ground or air based radar, and the claim will be tested. Elegantly simple.

Yes, with the technical aid from China or Russia and possibly other countries.

I am more inclined to figure this video is a partial propaganda made for the Islamic world, for the people of Iran and as a bluff to the Western powers.

      You are reverting to form.

Certainly Iranian influence was a threat to any & all Americans in Lebanon. Certainly Iran was a threat to all the soldiers that died in Iraq from Iranian supplied IEDs. Certainly Iran can play a spoiler in Afghanistan. Certainly Iran is a threat to its own citizens. Iran also has much influence in Syria

Let’s summarize. Clearly Iran has influence in 5 countries in the world Lebanon Syria, Iraq Iran & Afghanistan That it 5 countries out of around 195 in the world.

Oh & clearly they are a problem & perceived to be a problem to the gulf states by the gulf states.

So the troll known as AUSERNAME wants the U.S. not to have any business or cultural ties to 5 % of the world & leave it to Iran because Iran is not a threat.

You are either muddying the water or you are special.

Looking at the first image, the nose-wheel strut appears out of kilter.

the canopy looks awfully large and bulbous to this non-expert. I would think, if this were a real plane, that the canopy would have the same angles to it the rest of the plane does. and that it would not stick out above the fuselage as far as this one appears to.

Yep. It’s a mock-up at best, and by ‘someone’ that has no concept of stealthy physics. The instrument panel wiring is a freeking radar strobe light – shoot me shoot me! Stupid IraXis, model airplane Trix is for kidz.
