Israel Hints for the First Time it Was Behind Syria Airstrike — as Assad Vows to ‘Confront Any Aggression’

Israel Suggests for the First Time it Was Behind Syria Airstrike, as Assad Vows to Confront Any Aggression

Israel remains on high alert after the Israeli air force reportedly launched an airstrike Jan. 30 on a convoy that Israeli officials said was carrying weapons from Syria to Lebanon on the Syria-Lebanon border. MUNICH (AP) — Israel’s defense minister indicated Sunday that his country was behind the airstrike on Syria last week, in the first public comments from his government on the attack that U.S. officials said targeted a convoy carrying anti-aircraft weapons bound for the militant group Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak brought the issue up at a gathering of the world’s top diplomats and defense officials in Germany, initially saying: “I cannot add anything to what you have read in the newspapers about what happened in Syria several days ago.”

But, addressing the audience in English, he then added: “I keep telling frankly that we said – and that’s proof when we said something we mean it- we say that we don’t think it should be allowed to bring advanced weapons systems into Lebanon.”

In Syria, President Bashar Assad said his military was capable of confronting any “aggression” targeting the country, his first comments since the airstrike.

Syrian state television said Assad spoke during a meeting with visiting top Iranian official, Saeed Jalili.

Assad said Syria is capable of facing current challenges and can “confront any aggression” that would target the Syrian people.

Israel had not previously commented on the strike, but in the days ahead of the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials repeatedly warned of the dangers of Syrian weapons falling into the hands of Hezbollah and other hostile elements in the region.

The Syrian military, meanwhile, said the target of Israeli jets was a scientific research center. The facility is in the area of Jamraya, northwest of Damascus.

Purported images of the targeted site, aired by Syrian state television on Saturday, show destroyed cars, trucks and military vehicles. A building has broken widows and damaged interiors, but no major structural damage.

Following the attack, Syria’s ambassador to Lebanon, Ali Abdul-Karim Ali, said Damascus “has the option and the capacity to surprise in retaliation,” but that it was up to the relevant authorities to choose the time and place.

Meanwhile, Syrian opposition leaders and rebels on Friday slammed Assad for not responding to the airstrike, calling it proof of his weakness and acquiescence to the Jewish State.

The chief of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards said in remarks Sunday that Tehran also hopes Syria will retaliate against Israel for a recent airstrike on its territory.

The report by the official IRNA news agency quotes Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari as saying, “We are hopeful that Syria gives an appropriate response to the strike in the proper time.”

Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war, Israeli leaders have repeatedly expressed fears that if Syria were to disintegrate, President Bashar Assad could lose control of his chemical weapons and other arms.

On Saturday night, Netanyahu, who is in the process of forming a new ruling coalition, said his new government would have to deal with weapons “being stockpiled near us and threatening our cities and civilians” – an apparent reference to the deteriorating situation in Syria.

Barak said “Hezbollah from Lebanon and the Iranians are the only allies that Assad has left.”

He said in his view Assad’s fall “is coming imminently” and when it happens, “this will be a major blow to the Iranians and Hezbollah.”

“I think that they will pay the price,” he said.

Tzion, anyone that knows anything about the military knows, full well, that those hollowed out F-16′s pose little threat to the weapons and weapons systems that we have provided to Israel. This is payment for Egypt’s non-involvement in the recent Gaza-Hamas-Israeli conflict. Study how politics works.

      @ jerk
I don’t base the validity of Israel’s existence on some UN vote, especially not one that has no legal status. The UN vote in 1947 also established an Arab state in Palestine but as you can clearly see no such state was actually formed. Israel’s existence is a self-determined fact won through wars in which Israel was forced to defend its own existence.

Besides, the UN has zero authority to decide the location of a sovereign nations Capitol. The Israeli Knesset and the government ministries are in Jerusalem therefore that’s the Capitol. Moreover, these seats of government are located in the western part of the city which has been part of Israel since 1948 so on what basis should they not be allowed to govern from there.

Last I checked the weapons we provided Israel were also F-16s. Perhaps some 18s as well but not enough to make up their primary force. Besides, Egypt has always been well armed by Russia so they are hardly insignificant.

What I’ve never understood from the git-go is why the combined Arab countries don’t just perform a coordinated attack against this belligerent ‘nation’ of international criminals from all sides at once. This would solve the problem once and for all – and even Israel’s puppy state of ZOG wouldn’t be able to intervene in time. Then – and only then – could a lasting peace ensue, once the most warlike ‘nation’ in the world was OJ’d.

They did that in 1948. They lost the war and Israel gained territory. They tried again in 1967. They were decisively crushed and Israel tripled in size. They made one more attempt in 1973, attacking on the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, and despite initial success, never even reclaimed the entirety of what they lost 1967 and eventually lost more territory.

Only the Egyptian peace agreement was successful in reducing the size if Israel’s borders. Why would anyone dare attack?

By the Jerk, while you are right about American foreign aid to Israel, the Arabs received at least as much from the soviets. Wouldn’t that have evened the odds a bit more than you’re suggesting? Besides, in 1948 Israel had no foreign aid, no real tanks, only three highly outdated planes, and often had to face Egyptian tanks using Jeeps.

When elected in ’08, his chief of staff ‘and’ Biden’s chief of staff were both Jewish. His senior political adviser was Jewish. His senior economic adviser was Jewish. OMB was Jewish. This could go on and on with Sunstein, Stern, Bloom, Berwick, Kagan, Plouffe, Lew, Zients… on and on, but why?

The proof is always in the facts. And, it’s a fact that Jews only comprise 1.3% of our population. These results can not be accidental, and only a fool does not understand that equally talented people could be found in the other 98.7%.

So Obama, a man who hates Netanyahu, has yet to visit Israel during his presidency, has supported and armed Israel’s enemies, and who believes Israelis don’t know what’s in their own best interests, is actually a Jewish pawn? Is that also why he nominated Hagel, who by the way supported Obama twice more than myself?

      ==================================

I think they already did that:

      —————————
“For Israel, Iran had been a major arms market. In the first decade of Khomeini’s rule, Israel had been blinded to the radical nature and aims of the new regime by a desire to cash in on Tehran’s urgent need for weapons in the intensifying Iran-Iraq war. Thus Operation Seashell, in which hundreds of tons of Israeli weapons were airlifted or shipped to Iran, was conceived. More would follow in what became known as the Iran-contra affair. “I don’t remember even one discussion about the ethics of the matter,” one key figure from the Israeli Defense Ministry is quoted as saying. “All that interested us was to sell, sell, sell.” No one in the security establishment claims to have foreseen then that post-revolution Iran was to become the main exporter of Islamic fundamentalism and a vital supplier of Israel’s front-line enemies with money, weapons, and know-how. According to Bergman, one of the Browning machine guns sold to Iran by Israel was used by Hizballah 25 years later to kill Israeli soldiers during the kidnapping of two troops on July 12, 2006, an incident that sparked the Second Lebanon War.”

Of course many in DC and Israel are planning a false flag for War with Iran..

“Engineer”, you have so much in common with the late Yihye Ayash, the engineer from Gaza… you should consider follow his footsteps.

      @tech
Wasn’t it you, not me, who expressed his dissatisfaction with certain people living in this country? When have I ever expressed any desire to murder Christians? But of course you are White so you are above the need to actually prove what you say to be true, right? I despise Stalinist Russia for the purges it committed against Jews and Christians alike.

It is you who will not be satisfied until he has purged the world of Jews and you yourself have admitted this. In fact, you have all but said that it would be justified to wage war against any country in which Jews reside in order to achieve this goal.

Why don’t you finish the following statement for us: “It is okay to murder children when….”

I don’t want to see a **** on anyone harmed but don’t tell me that I’m suppose to be happy living under a Jewish apartheid knowing their history and undersanding how quick they will murder millions.. No sir. Please let’s separate.

You may be a decent man but I do not trust your people and just because there are some good ones doesn’t mean we should play russian roulette with our future.

Benjamin Netanyahu will continue to do what is best for his country regardless of threats. He will continue to protect Israel with or without permission from Obama or the UN and to that I say thank God.

I hope that BiBi hears me when I shout to the east and tell him to kill as many of Barry Soetoro’s Al Qaeda buddies as he can before I have to fight them in Virginia.

When the fighting starts over here, Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood will be armed with all those nifty exotic weapons seized from Gadhafi’s armories, shipped through Turkey and winding-up in Syria (and Alabama).

Oh, you don’t think that some of Gadhafi’s 20,000 shoulder-fired, anti-aircraft missiles will make their way to these fine United States? Eric Holder has probably already created a program to “fast track” these weapons into the US using his ATF bunglers. He’ll probably code name it “Missile Madness” or some such tripe. But. meantime, he and his boss will try their damndest to take away YOUR weapons.

Nope, not unless in a camel caravan. High tech weapons require high tech storage and maintenance – the Stingers FIM-92 are HE junk.

When was the most recent use of one, that you know of, by a Jihadi?

      Hi Doug,

Sorry, old son, you don’t seem to be understanding what I’m saying. Whatever help those slugs need to get the missiles, RPG’s and heavy auto’s into the USA WILL BE SUPPLIED by Barry Soetoro’s boys. You want the US Air Force to fly them into Tinker? They’ve got an App for that!

Who do you think has been shipping the arms out of Libya through Turkey and into Syria? It hasn’t been the Boy Scouts! It’s our government, Doug. This ain’t your Pappy’s America. Doug, Obama is suppying arms to Al Qaeda and the MB in Syria. We unseated Mubarak and Gadhafi and Bashar Al Assad is next on Barry’s list to create global chaos. You sound as if you’re stuck in the Seventies’ mindset. Your government is actively pursuing global chaos whether or not you choose to believe that fact.

Wasn’t “Fast and Furious” proof enough to you of the lengths the Obama administration is willing to go to create conditions to force you to live like a cow?

      Snap out of it, daddyo!

Well, this kind of redneck thinking is why the war in the Middle East will never end. Don’t worry, Israel will be paid back – and when it happens, I will laugh and laugh and laugh. Such a deal!

This has been a major concern of mine as well. At best, President Obama will stay out of it. He certainly will NOT assist Israel. Just how far he would go to help the other side remains to be seen.

Unfortunately, as we witnessed on the night of 9/11/12, most of our military will do as they are told, looking forward to being suupported for the rest of their lives. If that wasn’t the case, Stevens, Smith, Woods and Doherty would be alive today.

If Barry Soetoro tells them to target Tel Aviv, the repsonse will be “Aye,aye, Captain, three bags full!”

@Mr. Kuchta, so you have no confidence in Oath Keepers, the principles or the principals?

In my brief military experience, six years active, I was carefully taught to consider, question and disobey an order, particularly one within my technical responsibility.

DOUG: I do think the recent treatment of Petraeus and Allen, etc., shows something is afoot in this administration . The fact that the Left, from which Obama arose, called him ” General Be-tray-us ” long ago also points to this old anti-military bent. And the fact that Obama appointed John Kerry is the ultimate slap in the face for the American military.
