One of the most touching commercials from Super Bowl Sunday was the Dodge ad based on the “so God made a farmer” speech by Paul Harvey. We’ve included the full audio from the speech below so you can listen to the entire, rousing tribute.
But first, here is the ad itself:
Harvey delivered the speech at the 1978 Future Farmers of America convention. Here’s the full transcript (the text in brackets didn’t make it into the Dodge commercial):
And on the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said I need a caretaker- So God made a Farmer
God said I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk the cows, work all day in the field, milk cows again, eat supper then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board – So God made a Farmer
[I need somebody with arms strong enough to wrestle a calf and yet gentle enough to deliver his own grandchild; somebody to call hogs, tame cantankerous machinery, come home hungry, have to await lunch until his wife's done feeding visiting ladies, then tell the ladies to be sure and come back real soon, and mean it - So God made a Farmer]
God said I need somebody willing to sit up all night with and newborn colt, and watch it die, then dry his eyes and say maybe next year. I need somebody who can shape an axe handle from a persimmon sprout, shoe a horse with a hunk of car tire, who can make a harness out of hay wire, feed sacks and shoe straps, who at planting time and harvest season will finish his forty hour week by Tuesday noon and then, paining from tractor back, will put in another 72 hours – So God made a Farmer
[God had to have somebody willing to ride the ruts at double speed to get the hay in ahead of the rain, and yet stop in midfield and race to help when he sees first smoke from a neighbor's place - So God made a Farmer]
God said I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bales, yet gentle enough to wean lambs and pigs and tend to pink combed pullets; who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the broken leg of a meadowlark.
It had to be somebody who’d plow deep and straight and not cut corners; somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed, and rake and disk and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and a hard week’s work with a five-mile drive to church.
Somebody who would bale a family together with the soft, strong bonds of sharing; who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply with smiling eyes when his son says he want to spend his life doing what dad does – So God made a Farmer
And here is the audio of the full speech:
You may recognize Harvey’s name from another piece of audio that seems to resurface often. Last year, his 1965 speech with the refrain “if I were the devil” experienced a viral surge on TheBlaze and elsewhere. We’ve included it below:

Feb. 4, 2013 at 6:41amAnd then Satan created Marxists, to take your farm away from you. This commercial is sad for all of us INFORMED Blaze readers. We know that farmers are no longer permitted to be the masters of their own lives or to pass their farms on to their families. Good point about Disney being a huge propaganda arm of the Left. Just like this commercial is washing our face, selling us a foreign-made vehicle while reminiscing about a lost American dream. It’s despicable to exploit the great Paul Harvey for this deception. Think about that poor dairy farmer in Missouri whose beautiful raw milk products were confiscated. He’s ruined. Buy a FORD and overthrow this fascist regime.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 6:14amBest damn commercial ever!
Bout time somebody saw who the real heroes in this world are: Those who get up every day and struggle to make America strong (not just farmers but all of us who actually have a real job, I do farm by the way) and not those playing some damn ball game for some ridiculous amount of money or those politicians in DC wasting our hard earned money like they know what they are doing.
But 36 years at #1 Ford F150 need I say more I’m a Ford Man!

Feb. 4, 2013 at 6:10amSo, Saturday mornings beginning in May, I drive a 1/2 mile to the farmer’s stand. You take what you want from the outside vegetable and fruit stand and put your money into a slot in the shelf on the stand. It’s the honor system. You pay for what you take. No one is ever tending the stand-they are all out working in the barn or fields.
Nice way to grow up and grow old.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 6:06amThis day and age in America very few know how to WORK like a farmer and no kids know how to work.Nohting but metro sexual pansies. Now that the DEMOCRATS have taught everyone how to get their free stuff, why work. just take. Take from the workers, take from the successful that still work, and give to the DEMOCRAT takers.
Great ad. Makes me prout to know real ones.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 5:54amWe all remember our parents telling us to turn our music down because the generation of Gene Autry didn’t relate to the music of Elvis and the Elvis fans never quite got Heavy Metal and so it goes. 95% of these ads left me and my wife looking at each other going,”huh?” “They PAID an Ad agency for that?”
I thought Jeep tried too hard in their military families Ad. We love you guys, but buy a Jeep. Skip the dramatic Oprah nonsense and show the Jeep through the years with the military. Male it generational. Not some saga about the families that you really don’t care about and oh, by the way, buy a Jeep.
We actually applauded the Paul Harvey ad. It was the best of the night – by far. But, because it mentioned God (CAPITAL “G”), it will not receive any awards.
The Bar whatever her name is and the definition of a boy in the 21st Century (over weight, 70′s doo looking like he needs a shower and needs to get out of the video game center in his basement) was
one for the cutting room floor.
As for the Audi ad. Did you find yourself thanking the Prom King for kicking the twerp’s a$$? I did. The kid didn’t own the car. He didn’t earn the car. He was a skinny version of today’s feminine male and he got his A$$ kicked the way kids got theirs kicked in the old days. Only today, the kid who would flunk gym class would go home and get his dad’s gun and come shoot up the place in revenge and we’d all wonder why.

good ad, it reminded some of us that there are still people who not only take care of themselves but take care of an ungrateful looter class

Feb. 4, 2013 at 3:53amSay what you ant about Dodge, but they came back via building trucks and keeping their past alive, not econoboxes, as “That Turd” suggested they do. They still did it their way. And you could never call them “Government Motors” to boot.
We may never no the real story until 50 yrs from now, what exactly happened with Dodge Chrysler, only that a few bad decisions put them on their knees. But we do know that our Auto Industry as a whole was dragged down by the UAW’s upper end. Until those slimy bastards are put down in their graves for good, this won’t likely be the end of the Auto Industry failing.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 3:19amWell NEIDERMEYER your are ill informed at best. Welfare? I work my **** of 14 to 16 hours a day, 6 and most times 7 days a week. I assure you it is not 4 times 4 as you put it. This year I raise a 60-bushel crop instead of the normal 200. I don’t see this welfare as you put it coming to my aid. I have to work even harder to figure out how to pay off the crop loans that have piled up while still trying to figure out how to get a crop in the ground this next year. You have absolutely no idea of the struggles and pressures that go into maintain a farm and ranch. You only understand what the media tells you and you are sadly mistaken. We take huge risk, bust our butts and our backs and live an honest and hard life so gluttons like you can belly up to the table and eat cheap from our labor. All the while showing us disrespect. Your sir/madam should be ashamed of your poor attitude and judgment. At the very least, get your facts down first before you condemn others. You would be wise to keep you mouth shut and appear Intelligent rather that speak up and remove all doubt.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 3:18amPaul Harvey”Brings back the best of Radio’ Miss the guy’ Farmers???The best of the hard working people out there. Lived on Farms, have kids that owned them and finally gave up to Govt. crap. Lived and worked on Ranches most of my life’ It’s a wonderful life to raise kids. Teaches them a great work ethic. All my kids turned out to be good hard working people, and I credit that to the years on the Ranches we lived on. Dodge trucks???I’d buy one again,. Have had my Dakota since 93,no breakdowns, never failed to start,no major money into it other then buying it new. A lot of guys want this truck. I’ll never part with it and can only hope I can live to see the day I can afford to buy a new one’ This commericial, and Oprah’s (service men related’) were the 2 best of the Super bowl ads. There were a lot of funny ones ,but these 2 brought tears to my eyes. True American ads’

Feb. 4, 2013 at 2:29amI noticed some of the online news sites are polling to see which superbowl ad they liked the most. I went to CBS.com and they did not even have this ad on their list to vote on, so I voted (none of the above.) Turns out none of the above got 27% of the votes. This was the highest tied with Budweiser clydesdales at 27%. Wonder why 27 % voted none of the above? because this ad wasn’t on the list. Tired of liberal media leaving out God. so sad…

Feb. 4, 2013 at 1:53amThanks to all the folks who had something nice to say about agriculture.
We don’t do this job for praise or contrary to liberal opinion for money.
We do it because it might not be a good living, but its the greatest life that a person could ever have.
Still, it’s quite something to read, people saying something positive.
On behalf of all of us in ag, you are very welcome!

Feb. 4, 2013 at 1:50amPaul Harvey would have never done this commercial!!!! Are people so gullible that they really think Dodge/Ram is American???? Wake up, wise up. It’s a foreign owned company AND all of the Ram trucks 2500 and up aren’t even built here, they’re built in Mexico. And look at the pictures of tractors in the commercial – Case…also owned by Fiat. Then they wave an American flag. Disgusting.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 3:14amChrysler IS foreign owned now–that why they understand what is happening in America, and they too are lamenting the loss!!!
The liberal city-folk think they rule the country, but if all of the farmers, ranchers and real people got together, we far outnumber the idiots running the country today! Here in NY, let’s cut off from West Chester county down to the bay, give it to north Jersey, call it our 51st state and sit back and watch it implode faster than California is doing right now.
As a farmer, we get it!!!

Winedude
Feb. 4, 2013 at 1:40amFor the first 10 years of my career I was in the farming business, managing vineyards. At the time I thought the post harvest production guys (winery managers and winemakers) were the biggest jerks on Earth. When my career evolved into wine making, and I had to deal with a lot of independent growers, I realized that they were some of the dumbest people in the world. I had been very involved in both state and national Farm Bureaus and those guys were the worst; figuring that the government owed them for not producing any of a half dozen crops or more or owed them subsidized water. I don’t even feel too bad about today’s exclusions on the death tax. Not that it mattered a whole lot but when my mom passed away in 2008 the exemption was only $2 million with the balance at 45%. Carnegie had the right idea about inherited wealth…

Feb. 4, 2013 at 1:38amNiedermier, you don’t have a fing clue what u are talking about. Go to USDA.com and find out what u have to be to get a check from the gov! Give u a hint the term socially disadvantaged is what qualifies you! I had to pay 600,000 to keep the place that has been in my family since 1895! I have never got a dime from the gov but I sure have to pay them every year!
I would like to invite you to come to any cafe in wy and spout that welfare comment out! You sir would be lucky to get out with your hide!
Everybody is entitled to an opinion but an informed opinion is preferred by all!
I haven’t had a new truck in 15 yrs but if I could I would get a dodge just based on this ad!
Thank you dodge, for some appreciation for what we in ag do for this country!

Feb. 4, 2013 at 1:28amThere are some great replies here. HCARTEXAS, that was a good piece of writing. Someone could publish a great book by gathering people like you together to collaborate, each one telling the story of generations of families who DID BUILD THAT, and the sacrifices they made, and the privations they suffered to do it. I really don’t care who paid for the commercial, but Paul Harvey was wonderful in this ad. Someone needs to take up where he left off and write some of these truths down.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 1:14amThey sure pulled out all the stops with that add. I found it to be much too much. They had me ’til the end when I saw that they were using every sentimental trick in the book to sell me stuff (a truck). Manipulation that heavy has the opposite effect on me…it makes me angry and determined not to purchase their product. It was slickly and professionally done….just too much schlock for me.
