Boy Held in Week Long Alabama Hostage Standoff Released Alive, Source Says

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) — Authorities stormed an underground bunker Monday in Alabama, freeing a 5-year-old boy and leaving his increasingly agitated captor dead after a week of fruitless negotiations that left authorities convinced the child was in imminent danger.

Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, had taken the child off a school bus after fatally shooting the driver. He was known by neighbors for his anti-government rants and for patrolling his property with a gun, ready to shoot trespassers. He had stayed for several days in the tiny bunker before.

“He always said he’d never be taken alive. I knew he’d never come out of there,” said an acquaintance, Roger Arnold.

Dykes had been seen with a gun, and officers concluded the boy was in imminent danger, said Steve Richardson of the FBI’s office in Mobile. It was not immediately clear how authorities determined the man had a gun, or exactly how Dykes died.

Late Monday, officers were sweeping the property to make sure Dykes had not set up any bombs that could detonate. Full details of the bunker raid had not yet emerged. However, neighbors described hearing what sounded like gunshots around the time officials said they entered the shelter.

Michael Senn, pastor of a church near where reporters had been camped out since the standoff began, said he was relieved the child had been taken to safety. However, he also recalled the bus driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., who had been hailed as a hero for protecting nearly two dozen other children on the bus before being shot by Dykes.

“As we rejoice tonight for (the boy) and his family, we still have a great emptiness in our community because a great man was lost in this whole ordeal,” Senn said.

The rescue capped a long drama that drew national attention to this town of 2,400 people nestled amid peanut farms and cotton fields that has long relied on a strong Christian faith, a policy of “love thy neighbor” and the power of group prayer. The child’s plight prompted nightly candlelight vigils.

Throughout the ordeal, authorities had been speaking with Dykes though a plastic pipe that went into the shelter. They also sent food, medicine and other items into the bunker, which apparently had running water, heat and cable television but no toilet. It was about 4 feet underground, with about 50 square feet of floor space.

Authorities said the kindergartner appeared unharmed. He was taken to a hospital in nearby Dothan. Officials have said he has Asperger’s syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Melissa Knighton, city clerk in Midland City, said a woman had been praying in the town center Monday afternoon. Not long after, the mayor called with news that Dykes was dead and that the boy was safe.

“She must have had a direct line to God because shortly after she left, they heard the news,” Knighton said.

Neighbors described Dykes as a menacing, unpredictable man who once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe. Government records indicate he served in the Navy from 1964 to 1969, earning several awards, including the Vietnam Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He had some scrapes with the law in Florida, including a 1995 arrest for improper exhibition of a weapon. The misdemeanor was dismissed. He also was arrested for marijuana possession in 2000.

He returned to Alabama about two years ago, moving onto the rural tract about 100 yards from his nearest neighbors.

Arnold recalled that, for a time, Dykes lived in his pickup truck in the parking lot of the apartment complex where Dykes’ sister lived. He would stay warm by building a fire in a can on the floorboard and kept boxes of letters he wrote to the president and the unspecified head of the mafia, Arnold said.

Dykes believed the government had control of many things, including a dog track he frequented in the Florida Panhandle. Arnold said that Dykes believed if a dog was getting too far ahead and wasn’t supposed to win, the government would shock it.

Ronda Wilbur, a neighbor of Dykes who said the man beat her dog to death last year with a pipe, said she was relieved to be done with the stress of knowing Dykes was patrolling his yard and willing to shoot at anyone or anything that trespassed.

“The nightmare is over,” she said. “It’s been a long couple of years of having constant stress.”

  I really don’t think that folks were on the side of the misguided soul. He had mental issues. I am glad the kid is safe but what did it take, 50-75 SWAT goons to storm the dude and murder him, just to send a message to the rest of us, including you sir? I will never understand why it takes 100 cops and SWAT creeps to take down one guy. We will never know if he surrendered of not. The plan all along was to send a threat to all of us. Tow the line or else. But again, I am glad the kid made it. Don’t be so quick to side with the goons. It is unbecoming of your status as a leader among us.

  Mil-Dot To be honest with you I personally don’t like or understand why they need that many police swat etc that does bother me a great deal. It’s just when a child like that is abducted it enrages me profoundly and I didn’t consider the amount of force used at the time,I think you know what I mean.

  This one hits close to home cause it is less than 50 miles from where I live. What made the old vet do these horrible crimes? Agent orange? flashbacks? Maybe the kid reminded him of children he shot in Nam. Maybe he had a bad trip. Does it matter? I don’t care if it took 1 or 1000 soldiers or cops to get the job done. The crazy SOB is dead! If anyone puts an innocent child in harms way because he is flipping out, a pervert, or for any other reason TAKE HIM OUT! Bottom line: innocent child is alive, crazy old coot is dead, taxpayers don’t have to pay for prison time, court cost, or psycho meds and treatment. God was watching. Nuff said.

  No Jungle, he speaks as a paranoid schizophrenic who doesn’t understand that yes, 50 guys is correct. You expect a 4-12 man team to stand by 24/7? What about meals? Rest, overwatch? Every major tac team has at least 2 people to do every job just to allow minor amounts of rest, for protracted events more people are needed. Add that not ever officer is going to be a demo expert so you need a few of those to ensure at least one of them is ready should the time come. List goes on and on, most of the guys are not entry team members even.

the city clerk said, a woman seen in the town center praying and after she left the clerk said she got a call telling her that the perp was dead and the boy is safe. these are strange times we are living in. and unrelated i heard that obamacare will cost a family of 4 nearly 20K a year now who thinks obamacare can survive if thats true. things are going to change but they will get worse before they get better better hold on it’s going to be bumpy.

  50-100. Man, they must be really scared if they think it takes 50-100 fully garbed goons in body armor to handle a 65 year old vet. They hate vets. They hate their guts. They go out of their way to smoke them. Again, I am glad at least one of them came out alive. I do think that these so called hostage negotiators are really just phoney con men. I think I could have done a better job of talking the guy out. But hey, it’s fun to plug people. It is a blast i tell you. These events are not isolated incidents people. They are psy-ops designed to intimidate and frighten people from resisting. Pull on heart strings=people stand down and side with the govt. Oldest trick in the book.   Your ignoring that nearly all members of the FBI HRT are all prior vets, most prior SOC. If you knew anything about TT&P you would know why a major tac team rolls deep into a situation. Major teams roll capable for a multitude of options and have to have each position backed up by at least 1 other person.
  
  Heres what happens had they shown up like it was Barney Fife in Mayberry. The situaion goes South fast and the cops are portrayed as a goof troop not capable of any action except whiping their own third point of contact. The other option is that they show up in force and usually it results in a happy ending.
  
  A successful hostage rescue depends on a tactical triangle being completed: speed, stealth and violence of action. That means you act fast when it become neccesary for you to do so, make entry from an unexpected location and time, then you use an overwhelming display of violence to prove your intent and capability to do great harm to the hostage taker should they not relinquish the INNOCENT hostage.
  
  In this case it means they blow the trap door, present deadly force while ordering the turd to stop then when he doesnt stop IMMEDIATELY the officer makes a T-zone shot. You don’t have time to give him more commands otherwise the INNOCENT kid dies.
  
  But thats what you likely wanted anyway, a dead kid, so you could say how stupid the HRT was.

  I’ve asked this before and need some clarification. Your name suggests possible military service. Yes, I know other occupations use milradian units of measure but not very many.
  
  I ask this because of your absolute ineptitude with L&O TT&P. If you had any military or L&O experiance you would know why officers or the military over seas can not act like it is Mayberry or Gommer Pyle’s USMC. If you had any real world tactical knowledge you would be saying, God bless the FBI HRT for being the best hostage rescue team in the world. Then you would be asking the Lord to please help the officer(s) who made the shot(s) as they are now going through a world of crap! No cop, even when 100% justified, ever wants to be in the position to take a shot. But we put ourselves in that position so that cowards like you don’t have to. So that cowards like you never have to know what it’s like to see the terror in a 5 year old boys life as the hostage taker slices his thoat because you had no shot. So that cowards like you never have to tell the grieving mother their child is dead.

Now that this thing turned out well (and thank God it did!), the administration’s photoshoppers are probably busy placing Skeeter at the scene. Maybe they’ll even show him as one of the entry team members. There’ll probably be stories “leaked” that he planned the mission and directed its execution.

While a bit tongue-in-cheek, you know it’s not beyond Skeeter to do something like that. And his fawning masses would eat it up.

I’ve been watching this on several stations since the first mention of it. So glad to hear the child is safe and will rejoin his family. Sorry to hear that Dykes lost his life, but he is solely responsible for his own actions. The alphabet networks are running their local news shows and since I am in Alabama, they are all covering this news as well as CNN. I have spot checked BSNBC several times and they are steadily flogging away Wayne La Pierre and gun owners. Go figure!

The story was a hoax. A “drill” at best, but more like a stinking, rotten hoax meant to scare people.

You need to report it that way, The Blaze. Don’t tell us a man with a gun killed a bus driver and then kidnapped a little boy. Don’t tell us he held the boy captive in a bunker, and that the FBI heroically saved the child. That’s Stalinism, The Blaze, and you know it is.

Tell the American People that this was all cruel act, that you are sorry it got misreported, and you will ask more questions before listening to the FBI in the future. Don’t complain about “state-controlled media” elsewhere when you can’t live up to these standards.

  BOBBA, Give that tin foil hat a few more wraps of duct tape to insure that it does not come off when you go outside. Since I live here in Alabama we call duct tape redneck repair all. I’m former LE and have been in touch with a couple of people down in that area by email. Well, news for you. **** after modestly terrorizing the community for years finally did flip out, attack a school bus, shoot and kill the drive, abduct a child, and holed up in his underground bunker. It actually happened, and it came to an end today. Geez, where do you fruitcakes come from? Surely, you’re not from Claxton, GA are you?

Fox News just reported that there was a loud noise prior to the announcement.
