Parent at Sandy Hook Hearing Lambastes Gun Control Advocates, Wonders if They ‘Failed American History’: ‘There Is Something Called the Constitution’

This story has been updated.

Bill Stevens Delivers Epic Speech Against Gun Control | Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting

We already brought you Mark Mattioli’s anti-gun control testimony in front of the Working Group Public Hearing at the Connecticut State Capitol on Jan. 28 (Mattioli’s son, James, perished in the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting). You also likely saw father Neil Heslin’s comments. As you may recall, video footage of his statement ended up being deceptively-edited by MSNBC.

But one speech you potentially missed comes from Bill Stevens, a father of a child in the Newtown Public School District. Unlike many of the other parents who testified, his daughter did not attend Sandy Hook (however she is in the same district). And rather than going after firearms, he took a different approach: He defended gun owners and lambasted those seeking new laws to remedy the problem.

Now, viral video of his impassioned defense of the Second Amendment is making its rounds today — and it’s certainly worth watching. In it, Stevens delivers a blow to other parents and politicians who proposed tougher gun restrictions at the hearing and wonders aloud whether they have “failed American history.” He also takes the time to read from the state constitution, while fervently defending his right to protect his family.

“My fifth grade daughter was in lock-down on Dec. 14, 2012. Unfortunately, her classmate’s little sister was murdered in Sandy Hook that day when lock-down and 9-11 weren’t enough to protect her from an evil person — not protect her from an assault rifle or some other inanimate object but from an evil person,” he says during his testimony.

The father goes on to note that he isn’t interested in citing statistics, as he proceeds to defend the freedom of citizens to own firearms without additional restrictions, calling legislators’ attempts to further crack-down on guns “asinine legislation.” Here’s a portion of his excoriating commentary directed at politicians and others touting gun control initiatives:

“I’m frankly shocked by some of the testimony today. In case some here failed American history, there is something called the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and a process by which to amend it. The same goes for the state Constitution. These rights are inalienable and endowed by our Creator — not you politicians — to all citizens regardless of gender, race or creed. In order to limit the rights of individual there is something called due process and legislation is not due process. You want to take my rights away? Let’s go to court.”

Stevens continues by noting that an official report about the Sandy Hook massacre likely won’t come out until the summer and that any legislation preceding that release would be premature. The father takes particular exception with attempts to demonize gun owners, claiming that his right to defend his daughter should be unimpeded.

“My guns are not dangerous. They are at home locked up collecting dust and cat hair,” he proclaims. “But criminals and tyrants — tyrants especially — beware. Lockdown is not an option at the Stevens residence. And 9-11 will be dialed after the security of my home has been established.”

He also alluded to the fact that additional school security would be a good avenue to protecting his daughter, not “making her dad a criminal” for being a gun owner.

“Charlton Heston made the phrase ’from my cold, dead hands’ famous,” he concluded. “And I will tell you here today, you will take my ability to protect my Victoria from my cold, dead hands.”

Watch the speech, below:

(H/T: The Gateway Pundit)

Editor’s Note: This story has been changed to reflect the fact that Bill Stevens has a daughter in the Newtown Public School District (she did not, however, attend Sandy Hook as originally reported).

Too many of those little wimps in D.C. want to leave us defenseless against the real enemy. The real enemy to us are the sick individuals who, for whatever reason, went over to the dark side.

    Yeah, it’s a Constitutional issue!

Stu the other day on Blaze noted that 99.997% of the guns in the USA are used ENTIRELY LAWFULLY. That’s a whole lot higher percentage compliance than motor vehicles and traffic deaths.

The theoretical rationale behind a Constitution is to protect the rights of minorities from the oppression of the majority. Best and most often cited example of this is Black Civil Rights in the deep South during segregation reform.

Bring this same view into the discussion on “gun control” — just change the terms:

Instead of “gun owners” substitute “negroes.”

In place of “gun control” substitute “segregation.”

In place of “separate but equal” substitute “common sense controls, limits on ‘assault weapons’ and ‘high capacity magazines’ . . . etc.”

And all of a sudden Constitutional Civil Liberties starts looking like a 1960′s progressive issue.

I hear what you are saying brother, but know this-gun owners are NOT the minority in this country. And as far as blacks go, I completely detest their elevated status in the eyes of the govt. Never before has a group been so undeserving of “protected status”. That is a fricking joke. Equal rights, yes, special rights, hell no. They cannot compete on an equal playing field. That is why most of them are employed by the govt. Because no private company wants them around. There are exceptions of course, and to those individuals, disregard my tirade.

There were 11,078 firearm murders in the US in 2010.
    30 a day
19000 committed suicide by shooting themselves
    (607 accidental firearm deaths)
I believe less that 10% on the people shot actually die so 300 people are shot in the US every day, on average

I did a calculation using other statistics found in the arguments in favor of the national right to carry legislation and came up with 526 people shot in the US every day.

    School shootings are aberrations.

Check your sources on suicide, they’re fake, and have been long discredited. You’re reading from Handgun Control Inc’s playbook. The same playbook that miraculously tells us that 40% of all gun sales are private and unrecorded, which is a feat given as unrecorded sales cannot be tracked nor quantified as a percentage.

Fact is, there were far less deaths attributed to individuals wielding firearms since gun laws were loosed from the late 1990′s forward, than there were before when people like you had your way and criminals had their pick of who they wished to victimize.

If you don’t like my rights, tough ****, I will give up not one more inch to your kind. You get no compromise, no “discussion”, no “conversation” and no debate. You’re wrong, I oppose you, and I will defy any laws your kind tries to foist on me, openly. Go straight to hell.

VANCIEPOOH, Of the over 9,000 federal laws that regulate, restrict, and control guns, purchasers, and owners already, why are most just not enforced? Why are some bragging about the 1.4 million turn downs of gun purchasers through the instant check system, much like Gabby Giffords’ husband yesterday on Fox? If there is any hit of any kind the ability of purchase only is turned down. Nobody is arrested or even further investigated. Why, CAPT Kelly himself said they were arrested and 1.4 million criminals were taken off the streets. I had to laugh at that, and it may have been a slip up on his part. The instant check system is rife with problems and often prevents law abiding citizens from making such purchases simply because of errors. And, those errors are usually not just corrected by the government until the citizen has exhausted a large amount of time, effort, and personal funds.
If you don’t want to own a gun that is your decision, but it is not your decision to take away the rights of others.

The reality about background checks… Capt. Kelly stated that 1.4 million sales were denied because the background checks flagged the potential purchaser. However, where the system really failed is when none of the denials resulted n arrests. Our gun store had a system whereby a purchaser, who was denied due to a failed background, was stalled by the sales clerk while another clerk would call the local sheriff. In every case, including those who were flagged as felons, the sheriff just told us to refuse the sale and let them walk. These are criminals who know they are felons, that have committed a felony by just coming into the store and handling the firearm prior to the purchase… they don’t even have to purchase… the handling is a felony… now they are caught by the background check (and in our state, the State Police), yet we are told to let them walk! Who knows how many of them eventually find someone to sell them a gun illegally? The point is this… If you truly want to reduce criminal assaults with a gun in this country… arrest and lockup according to federal laws the 1.5 million criminals that are caught every year by the background check system. As for the rest of the millions and millions of law-abiding citizens who purchase firearms to protect ourselves from the bad guys… leave us alone!

      @allison
Doesn’t need to be explained. We have regulated what arms are legal in civil society since the 1920′s. If legal restrictions, regulations, and procedures on sales were equivelant to infringement of the right to keep and bear, then I could own and operate automatic weapons, grenades, and a nuk in a suitcase. I can’t. Yet my 2nd Amendment rights are not infringed. So says every Court in the last 90 years.

“I googled “Bill Stevens” along with “Sandy Hook”. There were no hits from the major media networks.”
      Kudos to the networks:
Billy Boy has no association with Sandy Hook, none what so ever. This idea was forged by Faux News, NewsBusters.org and some of the other right wing outlets and producers of “home cooked news” .

      Billy Hallowell writes:
“Now, viral video of his impassioned defense of the Second Amendment is making its rounds today — and it’s certainly worth watching.
In it, Stevens delivers a blow to other parents who proposed tougher gun restrictions at the hearing and wonders aloud whether they have “failed American history.””
The major media networks, that tend to focus more on presenting news than inventing their own. Billy Boys views had no value before FauxNews made them news.

To spare Stevens from making a complete fool of himself as he delivered his low blows to all the grieving parents, that still are in mourning after the gunning down of their little most prized possession, was nice of them thou probably not intentional. It was most likely caused by the fact that Billy Boys views are as relevant as any & all American that has no connection to the school.
He first attacked them for having the audaciousness to propose sensible gun regulations. Then he wonders aloud on whether the parents have “failed American history.” Why would anyone want to be on national TV talking in such a dim-witted way?

I like Oathkeepers. I used to be a member but got disheartened by the 2 tiers of membership where those that are not active duty military, cops or firefighters (joke) are relegated to 2nd class status. Are not all patriots the same? I think they are. But, if that is what they want to do, they are only shooting themselves in the foot. I will put my tactics and skills against any firefighter or cop in this country. I may not best them, but I will show my mettle. I don’t like being cast aside as a chump. That is what OK thinks of us regular schmucks. That we are just shoe shine boys.
