A curriculum system used across the state of Texas reportedly includes a lesson plan for 6th graders instructing students to create a flag for a “new socialist nation” using “symbolism to represent aspects of socialism/communism.”
The following was taken from the CSCOPE curriculum lesson plan: “Notice socialist/communist nations use symbolism on their flags representing various aspects of their economic system. Imagine a new socialist nation is creating a flag and you have been put in charge of creating a flag. Use symbolism to represent aspects of socialism/communism on your flag. What kind of symbolism/colors would you use?”
Upon discovering the controversial material, members of the Texas Senate Education Committee grilled the creators of the CSCOPE curriculum system in a hearing on Thursday.
Several witnesses testified before the committee and accused the program of promoting far-left, anti-Christian values while others called the program openly socialist, the Star-Telegram reports. Other critics said it is difficult for non-teachers to review the program.
“Discontent is rampant across the state,” said Peggy Venable, the Texas director of Americans for Prosperity.
Wade Lebay, director of state CSCOPE at the Region 13 Education Service Center in Austin, defended the program and its content.
“It’s built by teachers, designed by teachers and that’s what’s powerful about CSCOPE,” Lebay said.
In regards to the assignment asking students to create a flag for a new socialist nation, first-term Sen. Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood) asked whether the assignment makes it appear that “we’re sympathizing with those types of countries.”
He went on to call the lesson plan “very egregious as a Texas and an American.”
Linda Villarreal, director of the Region 2 Education Service Center in Corpus Christi, further defended the assignment and accused lawmakers of singling out “just this one” assignment.
Sen. Donna Campbell (R-San Marcos) argued that CSCOPE also reinforces uniformity in Texas schools.
“Our teachers don’t need to be scripted,” Campbell said.
TheBlaze’s Mike Opelka previously reported that the same curriculum, CSCOPE, also includes a lesson plan that calls the Boston Tea Party an act of “terrorism.”
The following was included in the lesson plan for the Boston Tea Party:
News report: New Act of Terrorism
A local militia, believed to be a terrorist organization, attacked the property of private citizens today at our nation’s busiest port. Although no one was injured in the attack, a large quantity of merchandise, considered to be valuable to its owners and loathsome to the perpetrators, was destroyed. The terrorists, dressed in disguise and apparently intoxicated, were able to escape into the night with the help of local citizens who harbor these fugitives and conceal their identities from the authorities. It is believed that the terrorist attack was a response to the policies enacted by the occupying country’s government. Even stronger policies are anticipated by the local citizens.
“[T]his lesson comes from a non-profit group called CSCOPE. They are an offshoot of an educational program that traces its roots back to 1965 when the state established media centers / Education Service Centers (ESCs) throughout each of the state’s 20 school districts,” TheBlaze reported.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 3:48pmInstead of slamming the creators and teachers of this program we ought to be praising them for preparing these youngsters for the inevitable.
As long as the Boehner/McConnell style Republicans insist on getting in bed with Obama/Reid, and the Libertarians and hard core Evangelicals continue to throw their temper tantrums and refuse to vote, Socialism is and will continue to be the Zeitgeist.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 3:46pmThe only way to stop this BS is to read your childrens text books and lesson plans! GET INVOLVED! Teachers are notoriously left leaning. This isnt new, it part of the socialist/marxist plan. I recently spoke with some young adults from UCF, Orlando about a history course they were taking. They were being taught that during a recession, socialism is the best gov’t so everyone is taken care of. Our kids are being misled. Nothing is being taught about rolling up your sleeves and work hard to get out of a recession.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 4:28pmBecause that doesn’t work. “Rolling up your sleeves” sounds good on paper, but it doesn’t matter when there simply aren’t any jobs to roll your sleeves up for, genius.
Wow, your education must have really been top notch to get that kind of well-thought out rhetoric on paper.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 5:08pm@Iggies, you’re quite the dolt by your comments in this forum… I can understand how you might not relate to “rolling up your sleeves”. If you’ve never done it, its likely foreign to you. You might not be aware, but when businesses undergo slowdowns, they generally cut expenses where possible, possibly complete work manually to cut expenses, analyze economic factors in their business and re-prioritize budgets and growth plans for sales, marketing, production, etc. All of this is referred to as “rolling up your sleeves”. Another term we have for it is “work”, something you also may not be familiar with.

This is what has happened to our public education system. It’s been highjacked by the Progressive Left and turned into a Communist organization. It’s not about the students anymore, it’s about their agenda and how much they can indoctrinate people’s children with their crap!
I hope the people of Texas take a stand and demand that this garbage be removed immediately!

Feb. 4, 2013 at 3:27pmCome on you guys. The lesson clearly is speaking to symbolism relating to economies. It asks the student to consider how the countries use the symbolism in their flags, and then, as a means of asking kids to think critically, has them think about a country and its economic system.
For example, the hammer and sickle represent industrial and agricultural workers…so it would lead kids to think about what types of industries exist in a country. Our stars and stripes don’t offer the same basis for this lesson when compared to flags of socialist/communist nations.

I am appalled that any school district anywhere in America, no less Texas would allow this to be taught in any American school.

This is not the same school system you went to. The public education system is the strongest arm of liberal indoctrination, and it does not end after high school, the methods are ramped up in college.
Do whatever it takes, home school, or private school. Your children are not being educated they are being brainwashed and robbed of critical thinking skills.

I lived all my life in N.Y.C except for my time served in the U.S Marine corps and I know real conservatives when I see them, We conservatives exist everywhere San Francisco, Boston ,and even here in New York, We still stand for the right things and continue to fight, but are overwhelmingly outnumbered.Decades of liberalism taught to our kids have taken their toll culminating in an illegal mayor like Bloomberg. Take a stand Texas we will stand with you and we believe that if any state in the union will stand against these fake conservative politicians ,administrators and progressive educators it will be Texas.DO NOT LET THEM TEACH YOUR KIDS!. Feb. 4, 2013 at 3:13pmComrades, yours fears are misplaced. You rage against progress, against equality, against the collective prosperity of all Humankind? This is madness. These are not your enemies. Your enemies are the great and terrible hierarchies of the world: racism, sexism, classism. These systems ensnare and entangle you, and prevent you from and millions more from reaching their true potential. Today you are slaves, the playthings of capitalists. You must fear not, because a hundred years of working towards the destruction of these hierarchies is coming to fruition, and the liberation of the People is now at hand!
White privilege is being abolished, the Patriarchy is being toppled, and soon no one will be forced into a life of wage-slavery under the altar of Capital. The egregious fabrication of “private” property will be torn asunder, and all shall return to its rightful place as the collective inheritance of the People.
Your factories will be ours. Your farms will be ours. Your schools, your hospitals, your land: all will belong to the People. This conclusion is inevitable, comrades. History demands it. In the words of Benjamin Franklin: Join, or Die.

Feb. 4, 2013 at 5:51pm“You rage against progress, against equality, against the collective prosperity”
I rage against regression towards centralized planning and tyrannical control in the hands of the few. The Masses beg for leadership b/c that’s easier than taking control of their personal life & charting their own course.
“Your enemies are the great and terrible hierarchies of the world: racism, sexism, classism.”
My enemy is anything that attempts to revoke my natural rights. Those “ism”s are tools of the those who seek power, to engender hatred towards false enemies.
“These systems ensnare and entangle you, and prevent you from and millions more from reaching their true potential.”
Laziness ensnares. Laziness prevents true potential.
“White privilege is being abolished”
This is not a race issue?
“The egregious fabrication of “private” property will be torn asunder”
Private Property is a Natural Right. The Government Usurps it through Royal Land (Real Estate) taxes.
“Your factories will be ours. Your farms will be ours. Your schools, your hospitals, your land: all will belong to the People.”
The Bolshevik Revolution attempted this already. The farmers were killed for protecting their personal property. The “People” took over; Didn’t know how to work; the “People” didn’t see a need to work hard, b/c there was NO INCENTIVE to work hard; then the “People” starved.
No Incentive. No Productivity.

“Join, or Die”
Threaten Much?
Socialism is fun and stuff, until you run out of other people’s money.
There are still “Class Struggles” in Socialism / Communism, Fascism, Democratic Socialism; however you brand it.
Why else would the “Party” be able to drive in vehicles, while the “People” starve in the streets?
There is NO opportunity in a Centrally Planned Gov’t.
Why should one work harder than another if they will receive the same reward at the end of the day?
To see this in action, look no further than your local unionized government office. One person usually runs the office, while the rest (by their own admissions on surveys) work only 25% of the time.
The Freedom to Fail is the KEY to Constitutional Capitalism.
Allowing someone to Fail is how Ingenuity and Productivity Soar.
With Great Risk comes Great Reward.
If one is too lazy, afraid or unwilling to take risk, then one has the OPPORTUNITY to work for someone who IS willing to take a risk on running a business, building a company, or inventing a new thing.
Opportunity abounds. It’s NOT a Class- or Race-Struggle in the United States.
We are SO far ahead of the rest of the world in ingenuity: (most 1st gen millionaires in world).
And SO far ahead in educational opportunities: (EVEN in 1970 a U.S. black man had a better chance at College Education in U.S. than one in the U.K.).
