Texas Lesson Plan Instructs Students to Design Flags for a ‘New Socialist Nation’
A curriculum system used across the state of Texas reportedly includes a lesson plan for 6th graders instructing students to create a flag for a “new socialist nation” using “symbolism to represent aspects of socialism/communism.”
The following was taken from the CSCOPE curriculum lesson plan: “Notice socialist/communist nations use symbolism on their flags representing various aspects of their economic system. Imagine a new socialist nation is creating a flag and you have been put in charge of creating a flag. Use symbolism to represent aspects of socialism/communism on your flag. What kind of symbolism/colors would you use?”
Upon discovering the controversial material, members of the Texas Senate Education Committee grilled the creators of the CSCOPE curriculum system in a hearing on Thursday.
Several witnesses testified before the committee and accused the program of promoting far-left, anti-Christian values while others called the program openly socialist, the Star-Telegram reports. Other critics said it is difficult for non-teachers to review the program.
“Discontent is rampant across the state,” said Peggy Venable, the Texas director of Americans for Prosperity.
Wade Lebay, director of state CSCOPE at the Region 13 Education Service Center in Austin, defended the program and its content.
“It’s built by teachers, designed by teachers and that’s what’s powerful about CSCOPE,” Lebay said.
In regards to the assignment asking students to create a flag for a new socialist nation, first-term Sen. Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood) asked whether the assignment makes it appear that “we’re sympathizing with those types of countries.”
He went on to call the lesson plan “very egregious as a Texas and an American.”
Linda Villarreal, director of the Region 2 Education Service Center in Corpus Christi, further defended the assignment and accused lawmakers of singling out “just this one” assignment.
Sen. Donna Campbell (R-San Marcos) argued that CSCOPE also reinforces uniformity in Texas schools.
“Our teachers don’t need to be scripted,” Campbell said.
TheBlaze’s Mike Opelka previously reported that the same curriculum, CSCOPE, also includes a lesson plan that calls the Boston Tea Party an act of “terrorism.”
The following was included in the lesson plan for the Boston Tea Party:
News report: New Act of Terrorism
A local militia, believed to be a terrorist organization, attacked the property of private citizens today at our nation’s busiest port. Although no one was injured in the attack, a large quantity of merchandise, considered to be valuable to its owners and loathsome to the perpetrators, was destroyed. The terrorists, dressed in disguise and apparently intoxicated, were able to escape into the night with the help of local citizens who harbor these fugitives and conceal their identities from the authorities. It is believed that the terrorist attack was a response to the policies enacted by the occupying country’s government. Even stronger policies are anticipated by the local citizens.
“[T]his lesson comes from a non-profit group called CSCOPE. They are an offshoot of an educational program that traces its roots back to 1965 when the state established media centers / Education Service Centers (ESCs) throughout each of the state’s 20 school districts,” TheBlaze reported.

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 10:13pmWhen they talk about Texas changing in the future, it’s not because of Latinos. It’s because they’re in the damn schools changing it.
Better learn Russian, because pretty soon the US is going to be far left of the former Soviets.

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 9:47pm“It’s built by teachers, designed by teachers…” The whole education system in this country is a product of it’s own process and is rotten throughout. Education is too important to be left in the hands of “educators”. GET YOUR KIDS OUT OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS!

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 9:36pmA massive act of sabotage that caused significant financial losses for the most powerful nation on earth, and ultimately led to tremendous loss of life. That sounds like a terrorist act to me. In 1773, they didn’t have the benefit of history to help them interpret events. Britain was like America is today, and was the richest and most powerful nation on the planet. They felt justified in their taxation policy, just as we feel justified in policies that affect other nations. I don’t think it’s as simple as teaching kids the most pro-American narrative. That excercise makes the very important point that “History” wasn’t always in the past…it happened to people just like us, and they reacted just like we do. Likewise, people have/had pride in their communist nations. They laughed like us, they got married, they had children, etc. It wasn’t always cloudy and cold in Moscow. Creating a flag is an interesting excercise in perspective taking, it’s not an endorsement of communism.

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 9:08pmI have come up with a flag for this assignment.
On a blood red field a hammer comes down on the head of and a sickle goes through the body of the citizens.
There is no doubt though I would fail the assignment the way I failed my political science class because I wouldn’t support my teacher’s socialist views.

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 8:08pmSimple economic law; Socialism always leads to accelerating debt; mostly because human nature can never be happy with enough. Mostly the leaders never lead by example (see Democratic Social Justice Party).
Moreover, the universe requires competition and balance between consumption and acquisition. Debt is always punished.

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 8:01pmIs what’s sauce for the goose also sauce for the gander here?
If Texas 6th-graders can be mandated as a lesson plan to design a socialist flag, then maybe some school districts of which conservatives have iron-fisted control can design their OWN lesson plan in this realm: having students envision a future Texas which either all by itself or as the anchor of a whole confederacy of other like-minded states has thrown off Washington DC’s control and is now an independent republic (we’ll say for argument’s sake that the new republic will NOT be using the same flag Texas flew as a republic from 1837 to 1845).
And for extra credit, these students can be encouraged to craft a constitution for the new republic, or at least the foundation for one, which will ensure that the foolishness that led to the breakup of the former United States of America will NOT be repeated in this new republic.

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 8:05pmOOPS:
Forgot to mention, although I trust it was implicit enough to be understandable if not explicitly stated, that in this lesson plan, the students would be designing a flag for this new republic that is now independent of the rest of what was formerly the United States of America, a flag that cannot mimic the flag of the original Republic of Texas from 1837 to 1845.

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 8:25pmBravo! Check Mate. Austin is full of Lefty nut jobs and Sodomites. They like to twist History in the fashion that suits their agenda. The Majority of Texans will light up the phone lines in this Bastion of moral decay and let them know they will have to COME AND TAKE IT FROM US. The result won’t be pretty. The Communist who are perpetrating this agenda will soon be faced with a come to Jesus moment at the hands of some REALLY PISSED OFF Texans . They better stop pretty quick because WE won’t tolerate it. PERIOD.

This is exactly what the current pres.’s wife meant when she said “We have to change our history.”
Baby steps, that is what they continue to use.
They will never stop pushing their agenda.
We must never stop pushing back.
If you see something, speak out against it. Explain it to others in a rational way.
Show them examples. Show them what the difference is, even if it’s a small difference.

Posted on February 4, 2013 at 6:58pmI love it when they say they want more parental involvement. Our education system is a complete sham and will continue to be a sham until parents have the power to choose where to send their kids to school. Why is it that in a liberal utopia parents can choose to abort their babies but not choose where to send them to school?
