Danish Critic of Radical Islam Survives Assassination Attempt — and His Partner Reveals Possible Motive to TheBlaze

Danish free speech advocate and critic of radical Islam, Lars Hedegaard, survived an assassination attempt by a gunman Tuesday at his Copenhagen home.

Hedegaard’s partner, Swedish journalist Ingrid Carlqvist, told TheBlaze that the young man appeared to be of Arab descent and that she and Hedegaard are certain the motives for the attack stem from the launch of their new weekly newspaper, “Dispatch International,” which contains content critical of Islamic extremism.

Hedegaard was shaken but not physically injured in the attack at his apartment, where a gunman, posed as a deliveryman, rang the doorbell under the pretense that he had a package to deliver. When Hedegaard opened the front door, the man pulled out a gun and began firing.

“The bullet flew past my right ear, after which I attacked him and punched him in the face, which made him lose the gun,” Hedegaard told the AP. Carlqvist said that the gunman attempted to shoot twice more but that the assailant’s gun jammed each time.

“I am so happy that he was such a lousy shooter, that he missed.” Carlqvist told TheBlaze. “The bullet went right beside Lars’ head. It is really a miracle that Lars is alive.”

Those who have followed the Islamist-led carnage surrounding Danish cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Muhammed might be familiar with Hedegaard, a journalist, scholar, and leading advocate for free speech as it relates to Islam. As president of the the Danish Free Press Society and The International Free Press Society (IFPS ), Hedegaard has consistently come under fire for refusing to capitulate to those seeking to silence voices critical of Islam’s radical elements.

Hedegaard’s role in the IFPS is not what Carlqvist believes is the problem, however. “He [Hedegaard] has been chairman for ten years,” she told TheBlaze. “We are sure the attack has everything two do with the weekly newspaper.”

At the end of 2012, the duo launched Dispatch International online, which contains articles in English, Swedish and Danish, spanning a range of topics, including Islam. The print version was just launched in January and is now due to complete its sixth installment.

“We do have a point of view critical of Islam,” Carlqvist noted before stressing that the ethnicity of the shooter, who she and Hedegaard believe to be Arab, “is crucial information” that directly correlates to the attack.

She added that police have sequestered Hedegaard away to a secure location and that, for safety reasons, he may not be able to return to his apartment for an unknown period of time.

“I can’t go to my house tonight either,” she told TheBlaze. “If they want to shoot the Danish editor in chief, then they want to shoot the Swedish editor in chief.”

Despite concerns of retribution from the Islamist-community, Carlqvist emphatically stated that she and Hedegaard are undeterred in their commitment to speak truthfully about Islam.

“We are more determined than ever with the [goals of] our newspaper,” she said.

Mirroring Carlqvist’s sentiments, Hedegaard was able to send TheBlaze the following statement explaining that he will, under no uncertain terms, alter his course concerning Islam.

“What was the truth yesterday remains truth today,” he said.

The print edition of International Dispatch is available in Swedish only, but the subscription-based online version is available in English.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt called the attack “despicable” and noted that “it is even worse if the attack is rooted in an attempt to prevent Lars Hedegaard to use his freedom of expression.”

Fellow free speech advocate Geert Wilders echoed the prime minister’s sentiments via Twitter, stating that the attack was “terrible” and that his “thoughts are with him.”

The Free Press Society said it was “shaken and angry,” but “relieved that the perpetrator did not succeed.”

Information concerning the attack, particularly the motives and description of the assailant have not been widely reported. Carlqvist indicated that Danish media has in fact reported that the shooter is Arab or Arab-looking, but that both Swedish and international media, perhaps for reasons of political correctness, are refraining from mentioning what they believe to be the shooter’s ethnicity.

Additionally, most reports regarding the attack state that Hedegaard had been “fined 5,000 kroner ($1,000) in 2011 for making a series of insulting and degrading statements about Muslims.” The mainstream reports to date have not included, however, the fact that in 2012 the Danish Supreme Court acquitted Hedegaard of all charges, striking down his conviction 7–0.

I hope the Muslims do convert they would find out what true love is in Christ. He forgives and his blood covers the sin Because we all sin and that is why Jesus Christ died. By the way what happen to the fort hood creep also make copys of the stories and if they something about how good or you can’t say anything show them the stories also show them the 1 where there telling people in east london who pay taxes to that they must leave mosque area and put the alcohol down disturbing the grown men did, and tell the women what to wear who are not muslims and she said she don’t believe . They cannot tell people what to do. Anyways copy these stories and show them these. Peaceful huh.

I love how the article states that the Sweddish guy bascially beat the piss out of the Arab, who was probably much younger. After working with Muslims, believe me, they are sickend at this behavior. The problem is, if they are vocal opponents, their lives are in danger, so that is why many “muslims” are no longer practicing their faith. I’m telling you folks, Chritianity will dominate Iran some day, normal people don’t like what has happend to their religion and they are converting to Christianity.

  Thanks for the reminder. It is important to remember. However, evil has flourished where ‘good men’ have fallen silent. They must speak out, against obama as much as radical islam at large. Ask them what their take on obama is. obama has sided with evil in every event (as usual, citing “evil” that was actually friendly as far as giving up WMDs is concerned).
  They must reject obama to have any credibility. They should do so openly, or they continue to stand with evil. We got the 5 years and the actions as undeniable proof.

  I believe this! People in Egypt are fighting for a freedom their grandparents lived in. They have been told how it was when they could go to England to go to school, own their own land to farm, and the freedom to worship who and how they chose.
  We are at cross roads now and we watch every day our freedoms being taken away, not even for the good of all, although that is what the fools with power and money tell us. It is a horrible thing to put power and money into the hands of fools.

I just read a few articles on islam and copyed them 1 was a dad who killed his daughter she was 5 and he was worried about her virginity and he did not get much time for this and he was bragging on T.V. And there are more stories and yet the U.S. gov just sent jets and stuff to these arabs and north korea still has nuclear stuff and they do nothing. Do the people of the gov think they will be immune. they are fighting among themselves in these countries. Did I just read that the president is going to Israel? Now that he gave the arabs planes drone etc. He better read the bible and it is (Israel that God blesses) and GOD Curses any1 against Israel. Oh yeah as a christian he knows this.

  RADICAL followers of Islam are the bad ones. Try to remember the old testament has some pretty dark and crazy stuff in it as well. MODERN Christians choose to not have a literal interpretation of their holy book. The same is true of moderate followers of Islam. It makes you look stupid when you paint ALL the followers of a religion with the same brush. Progressives love doing this with Christians all the time. It’s not right when they do it and it’s not right when YOU do it.

  What you say is not true at all. The difference between the Quran and the Bible is like night and day, literally.
  In both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, the command for believers is to love God and love others. The Quran on the other hand, does not command Muslims to love others. It in fact commands Muslims to kill infidels (non-Muslims). See the difference? The Bible commands believers to love others, the Quran commands believers to kill others. One book is from heaven, and the other book is from hell.

  “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.”

  “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
  —Mark 12:31 and Leviticus 19:18
  
  The Quran on the other hand, contains no such noble verses about loving others. Here are some commands by Mohammad to Muslims:
  
  9.5 – So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
  
  48:25 – Muslims are harsh against the unbelievers, merciful to one another. –
  
  48:29 – Muhammad is Allah’s apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another. Through them, Allah seeks to enrage the unbelievers. –
  And no doubt the captors of Daniel Pearl had the following 2 verses in mind when they performed their demonic deed:
  
  47:4- “Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers, strike off their heads.”
  
  8:12- “I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off.”

  Furthermore, in both the Old and New Covenants, the Bible forbids murder. Our Book clearly warns that all (unrepentant) murderers will go to hell (Rev. 21:8). By contrast, the ONLY way an M-mad is assured paradise is if he murders himself and takes as many infidels as he can with him. And if his victims are children, so much the better.

Followers of Islam DO NOT have the best interests of ANYONE in mind… They only do what their “religion” has indoctrinated them to do… I do not hide my dis-like for Islam from anyone, and anyone who wants to give me trouble about it, will get NOTHING but trouble in return…

Followers of Islam beware… I am more trouble than your worth… (As are most REAL Americans…, at least the ones who refuse to roll-over for you).

One argument to advance the First Amendment is to promote peace. When individuals do not believe they can express their point of view then they may resort to violence. We see this in the West when someone commits a crime in order to get attention so they can make their voice heard. What’s odd here is that Islamic Radicals have the same access to a Free Press… but they find that their arguments do not find a receptive audience. Westerners are skeptical… and Islamists make wild and unsubstantiated claims… and this “social rebuke” leads to violence. What a strange society that rejects *more* freedom for *less* – and seeks to restrict it for others. Stranger still are those who surrender their freedoms (self censorship) to pave the way for those who would take your freedeom by force. What an odd world we live in.
