Second Grader Playing ‘Rescue the World’ at Recess Suspended After Throwing Pretend Grenade at ‘Evil Forces’ (With Adorable Interview!)

(Photo: Fox 31)
It’s getting harder and harder to be a kid these days. Back in the day, children frequently played “cops and robbers” and other good vs. bad games at recess and around the house. Now they’re getting punished for it.
On the heels of three 6-year-olds being suspended for making gun signs with their hands during recess and a 5-year-old girl being suspended and labeled a “terrorist threat” for threatening to shoot her friend with a “Hello Kitty” bubble gun, a 7-year-old Colorado boy at Loveland’s Mary Blair Elementary School is reportedly in a similar position.
So what did he do? Apparently the 2nd grader was playing “rescue the world” at recess when he threw a pretend grenade at a make-believe box full of “evil forces.” There wasn’t actually anything in his hand, nor was there a real box.
“I was trying to save people and I just can’t believe I got dispended,” Alex Evans said. After demonstrating how the game is played, he said he threw fake grenade at the box “so nothing can get out and destroy the world.”
Fox 31 has more on the story:
But his imaginary play broke the school’s real rules. The school lists “absolutes” designed to keep a safe environment. The list includes absolutely no fighting, real or imaginary; no weapons, real or imaginary. Click here to see the Mary Blair “Absolutes”
“Honestly I don’t think the rule is very realistic for kids this age,” says Alex’s mom Mandie Watkins.
Alex is like a lot of 2nd graders, perpetual motion. His mom says the little boy doesn’t understand why pretending to be a soldier was wrong. “I think that when a child is trying to save the world, I don’t think he should be punished for it.” [Emphasis added]
The mother adds that Alex will be staying home until they can get the issue resolved.

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 5:37pmWhere in the hell are all these loonies coming from. Are they so indoctrinated in college that they can’t use common sense any more. Someone was right recently when they suggested we fire ALL of the teachers and then after very careful review, hire the sane ones back.

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 5:07pmNote to parents at Pooosay Elementary School, in Loveland CO:
Take your children home and keep them home, until the school board agrees to allow your child to use his/her imagination and until they actually mean someone harm, they are to be treated like the innocent children they are!
Each day a child misses school, the school loses a good sum of money in state aid. If a hundred + parents protested in this way, it would definitely leave a mark.

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 5:07pmWhen I was a kid some of the parents worked at places that made them wear goggles and safety-type goggles. They had old ones laying around. Our bunch would all wear these goggles and then go out and have BB gun wars. It was fun. I had a Daisy Pump which I liked very much. It was an accurate little gun. We were playing war and having a great time. We threw many a fake grenade.

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 5:04pmThere is only one way to stop these idiots from doing this to your children; Take Them Out of The School! Public school funding is based in large part on the number of kids attending that school. If enough parents withdraw their kids, then watch how fast they cease and desist with this idiot policy. I can assure you if this had been my child he would have alrady been withdrawn from the school. “We deserve What We Tolerate”. Send him to a private school or home school. Public schools are dumbing down and blatantly teaching things countrary to most Americans core belief systems, even in places like Texas.

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 5:42pmI committed. I sent the school an email via your link, telling them that I’d contribute to his tuition if Alex Evans’ parents transfer him there. Thank you for the opportunity to do my ‘good deed’ for the day!

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 4:58pmWe played Cowboys and Indians when we were little. Try that today and you will be labeled a racist and a threat. I wonder if showing re-runs of the Lone Ranger is “allowed” under this new regime?
Is there any common sense left in the world? Especially in schools where the teachers and administrators are supposed to understand child behavior.

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 5:02pmNow they will demand this kid get put on Ritalin or he won’t be allowed back in school. Years from now, after the drug has deteriorated his brain, he’ll do something stupid and the left will tell us it was because of his penchants learned when he was a seven years old. There will be no mention of mind or behavioral altering drugs.

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 4:54pmIf you really love your children, what ever the expense get them out of the Public Indoctrination System. The brainless liberal cretins running Loveland’s Mary Blair Elementary School are dangerous to your children.

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 4:53pmThe tax paying citizens of this community need to call and demand that everyone involved in this inane decision be fired immediately. The kid is just being a kid. The adults are being idiots and we shouldn’t allow people with this mental disability left in a position with that much influence over our children.

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 4:50pmSo many kids getting hammered by zero-tolerance obsessive-compulsive adults projecting their irrational fear and shortcomings on immature kids. Obsessive-compulsive/projection/irrational … some physician should, for the safety of the community, put out a 5150 on those teachers/principle requiring their 72-hour involuntary admission to a psychiatric facility for evaluation. This would dampen down such knee jerk reactions and permanently place the psych admission in their records… now wouldn’t that be the best revenge.. er… solution?

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 4:37pmI imagine that several posters ALREADY have expressed a similar thought as I am about to (like MRPHIL3399 at 4:18pm), so I’ll join that chorus to say:
all the kid had to do to avoid a suspension, or indeed ANY punitive action taken against him by his school, was to tell the school authorities that the “evil forces” he was trying to “rescue the world” from were Tea Partiers, anti-abortionists, 2nd-Amendment defenders, home-schoolers, people who oppose affirmative action, and other such “evil people”.
Not only would his school NEVER have suspended him for THAT, but as MRPHIL3399 posted, the kid would probably have been made class president!

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 4:36pmWell…maybe as they treated this child with a “pretend grenade” just like it was real threat…then using that same logic, I’ll just send the government a pretend check for my taxes. Seems turnabout is fair play.

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 4:26pmPerhaps the kid should have been running around with his arms out like an airplane dropping rocks and playing “Drones and Terrorist Operatives”. Then he could cite President Bonobo’s latest declaration that it’s legal to fire Hellfire missiles into cars and houses without regard to “collateral damage”. Yes, THAT is today’s school playground game!

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 4:16pmOh man. I have two boys getting ready to go to school. All they do is play around the house fighting with swords, cap guns and the like. It’s what boys do. My school district is pretty good though, so I hope this doesn’t happen where I live. I was sweating bullets (no pun intended) when I found out my older one took to school a an empty shell casing he found on a hike. It’s ridiculous we have to sweat this stupid stuff.
