‘Hercules’ Actor Kevin Sorbo Bashes Hollywood’s Liberal Hypocrisy and Rips Obama: ‘One of the Worst Records’ in American History
Editor’s note — We’ll be discussing this story and all the day’s news during our live BlazeCast from 1pm-2pm ET…including your questions, comments & live chat:
Kevin Sorbo has had a fascinating and successful entertainment career. Perhaps best known for his lead television role in ”Hercules: The Legendary Journeys,” the actor has also been in a multitude of feature films, including “Soul Surfer” and “Prairie Fever,” among others. TheBlaze spoke with Sorbo this week to discuss his new movie, “Abel’s Field,” and to get his perspective on faith and the current political climate in America.
A unique individual, especially when juxtaposed against others in Hollywood, Sorbo is a Christian and, on the political front, he’s independently-minded. Rather than subscribing to Tinseltown’s leftist slant, his sociopolitical views are middle-of-the-road. Both of these attributes are rare in an industry that pushes Democratic politics, while embracing and touting less-than-conservative theological views.

When TheBlaze asked about his faith, Sorbo was candid, saying that he’s considered himself a Christian all of his life. He was brought up going to church and recalled being in middle school when he truly understood the Bible’s message.
“We’re not perfect — I’ve gone through trials and errors,” he said, claiming that his faith has experienced both ”ebbs and flows.”
Considering Hollywood’s ideological slant, we asked Sorbo if it is difficult to be a believer there. His answer was intriguing, as the actor explained, in detail, the challenges he regularly faces. To begin, unlike other entertainers, despite a busy career, Sorbo doesn’t really consider himself a part of Hollywood.
“I kind of removed myself from Hollywood a long time ago. I’m not really good about going out to schmoozing fests,” he said. “It’s such a phony atmosphere. It’s hard to make true friends.”
He went on to say that he despises the “politics of Hollywood” and that the industry is all about people doing favors for one another. In Tinseltown ”yes…means maybe,” he told TheBlaze. But his critique didn’t end there. Extending beyond the ins and outs of the industry, the ideological affiliations and liberal nature of the entertainment sphere also frustrate the actor.

“Hollywood screams tolerance, but they’re the least tolerant people you’ll ever meet in your life,” he continued. “The hypocrisy just reeks in this town. Why can’t we all have a point of view?”
As for his own political affiliations, Sorbo is neither a Democrat nor a Republican. He describes himself as “a true independent” — one who has strong views against socialism and the path that Europe has taken (one he fears the U.S. might be on).
“I voted for Reagan. I voted for Clinton. I [select] who is honestly the best person at that time to run the country [and I] think there’s problems on both sides of the aisle,” he said, later adding, “I keep asking my far-left liberal friends to show me where socialism works — show me where socialism has ever been successful.”
Clearly, Sorbo isn’t one for mincing words, calling political correctness a habit that is “absolutely destroying this country.” As far as President Barack Obama goes, Sorbo believes he “has one of the worst records” this country has ever seen, despite being elected to a historic second term.
The actor is well aware of the fact that his views separate him from other entertainers. After all, he doesn’t consider himself a part of the establishment. Plus, Sorbo admitted to TheBlaze that he’s been blacklisted by those who disagree with his politics. Still, the actor notes that he gets along with people from all political standpoints and that he enjoys a good debate (throughout the interview, he made reference to the fact that he has liberal friends).
Considering his gripes, one might wonder why he continues acting — something he also addressed. Despite the pitfalls, he loves being on set and making films and television, so much so that he looks past the industry’s anger and negativity.

Sorbo, who has made his fair share of family-friendly movies, encourages Christians and others who want to see more positive messages to continue voicing their support for faith-based and uplifting entertainment.
“It’s all about making a buck,” he said, claiming that the industry will respond to increased demand for more favorable messaging.
Sorbo continues to have a busy career. In addition to a book entitled, “True Strength: My Journey from Hercules to Mere Mortal–and How Nearly Dying Saved My Life,” the actor has a new movie called “Abel’s Field.” A description of the film reads:
Left motherless by tragedy and fatherless by abandonment, high school senior Seth McArdle (Samuel Davis) is under enormous pressure to support his young twin sisters. At home, he has no one to turn to. At work, he struggles to earn enough money to make ends meet. And at school, he endures the daily bullying from members of the football team.
When Seth fights back, he’s singled out by the football coach and assigned to an after-school work detail. Laboring alongside reserved groundskeeper Abel (Kevin Sorbo) to get the football field ready for the big game, Seth is surprised to discover that Abel understands his struggles … and his dreams. Abel encourages Seth to ask out popular Katie and even steps in to babysit so Seth can go out on the date. Yet as dark circumstances lure Seth toward a desperate decision, a reluctant Abel could be the one person who points him back toward the light.
Here’s the trailer:
Sorbo tells TheBlaze that it is “a story about redemption [and] finding a place to forgive yourself.”

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 1:32pmI didn’t know much about Sorbo until the past few years; he is truly a good honest man of God.(rare in Hollywood). If you ever get a chance, read about his near death experience – it is remarkable. Also, his Christian themed movies are awesome. Usually they air overnight on TBN or GODtv so be sure to record them – great family movies (see links below). Plus, Cloud Ten Pictures, which he’s involved with, produce amazing flicks that prove the existence of God for anyone who “needs evidence.” I loaned one to a guy I weight lift with in 2011 who still sort of believed in “Darwin/Evolution” and after we watched it he admitted to me how stupid he felt for not looking into all of the holes in evolution before. Sort of one sentence brings the situation crystal. They would probably Hire Jamie Foxx though. Racism -violence, not against blacks, no problem. Funny even, ha ha make movie with kill the white people as the main joke, get nominated for an Oscar. The climate of right and wrong is terrifing right now. Somehow O has used his Dictator 101 skills to successfully bring the country back 40 years, except now skewed the other way. His policies have only one objective- to destroy. He can’t come up with even a piece of paper with a note jotted on it for an economy. He gives money to all our enemies for ARMS, yet no one seems to find fault with this? Sorbo is great to stand up for his beliefs. Socialism doesn’t work, the Countries who are under it ,are trying to move away from it. zero success rate, yet, how stupid can you be , I studied it in school and did one of my major papers on it. I was a zealous young person, and was set to defend Socialism in written form, and set in, studied, learned and ended up realizing was completely wrong, Had to get an extension on the paper and completely overhauled it. Went on to debate (successfully) socialism in a debate. Changed my world view, that one paper, more than anything else I have done, all 3 degrees worth.

Posted on February 7, 2013 at 8:13am@GODFATHER1 Yes, ironically, many famous communists have been very wealthy, and therein lies the rub: besides being hypocritical, it reveals the truth about communism in reality. Communists always have a wealthy and powerful elite politely distanced from the rabble. (In Hollywood’s case, it’s a bunch of self-loathing wealthy people who pretend and make fiction for a living trying to absolve themselves of their guilt.)
Doubt it? Read your history. There’s a bit of a chasm between the flowery theory and the rock hard fact.

As such, I support industry veterans like Bill Shatner, JJ Abrams, Joss Whedon, Jeff Goldblum, and George Takei (among others). I hear that Robert Downey Jr. is more conservative than most in Hollyweird, which is good to know (I’m not wanting to blacklist the Iron Man or Avengers films).
I actively avoid Tom Cruise, Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Jamie Foxx and Jackie Chan (among MANY others). I have not viewed (in any format) a single Tom Cruise film in more than eight years, and I’d like to keep that going.

I don’t think that he was calling them out on any level by saying “anything for a buck,” what he was doing was letting us know that we need to vote with our pocket books. If you want Hollywood to start putting out movies that fall in line with your values, then you need to support those movies when they are made. If those movies only make a few bucks they will stop making them. That’s just the nature of business. No company continues to make a product that nobody is buying.

So just why is it progressives want the entire country to go in that direction again?

It was godless heathen who subscribed to darwinian evolution that felt it was justifiable to kill those not like them. These same people put blacks in chains. It was conservative Christians that put an end to slavery and the butchering of the Indians. This is why a large percentage of blacks and Cherokee are Baptists. The same liberal minded powers that enslaved africans and stole the land from native americans would fit right in with the hollywood types of today. Socialism is best summed up with the words of Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other people’s money”. Posted on February 6, 2013 at 9:37amHey Fast….
you know what else is weird…hmmm…
all those hippie socialist/marxist/commune living gals and guys from the late 60′s and early 70′s…. yeah…all those great thinkers…
all left college and got jobs and became… OH THE HORROR….the Yuppies of the 80′s and THEN…the CEO’s in the 90′s and the politicians…. YEAH…hmm….some of them even went BACK to college as the professors…WOW….
and look where we are now…look at the country now…Hmmmm…makes you think…yeah…but blame the Jews..the Zionists…yeah…go ahead with that…you blind fool….
ignore the man behind the curtain…go after the low hanging fruit…
and if you call yourself a Conservative or a Christian… stop…we don’t need bigots, racists, and morons in either group…. go back to the psycho Ron Paulbots you hail from…
maybe you should list to Mr. Sorbo…just like Hollywood are hypocrits and intolerant….why is it that the “libertarians” that follow Ron Paul are the most intolerant, bash everyone that doesn’t agree with them, and tend to spout the most VILE, bigoted, and racists comments….
doesn’t “libertarianism” profess live and let live, that what does not pick my pocket or take my life doesn’t not matter, the philosophy that I can live how I like by any means I like as long as I follow the basic “common” law…no murder, theft, infringement on liberty of another…
Paulbots = IDIOTS!!

As a libertarian I can spell, and use grammar to form coherent sentences. Since it’s clear you cannot do this; if I’m an idiot what does that say about you?
Libertarianism is anti-collectivist, which includes racism. The person you are responding to isn’t libertarian, you can’t be a racist and libertarian any more than you can be socialist and libertarian. You can certainly be conservative or liberal and racist.
Clearly you aren’t libertarian since you are even more angry and hateful than the person you are replying to.
One way libertarianism can be boiled down is simply this. The government must obey the same moral and statutory laws as everyone else. Since the government only has powers granted to it by the people, the government cannot possibly have any power the people do not.
You may pick up your gun to stop a murder, rape, or theft. Therefore you may delegate this moral authority to police. You may not pick up a gun to force your neighbor to pay to build a library or fund someone else’s food stamps or buy F16′s for for Egypt. You may not do those things. It is morally impossible for you to delegate an authority you do not have.
It is even less moral to anonymously & cowardly going into a voting booth to authorize sending police to put people in jail if they dare refuse the demands for funds for those things. If you VOTE for the government to do anything you KNOW is wrong, because you would not do it YOURSELF, you are acting immorally.

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 9:18am“Hercules” was good, a little campy for my taste, but he was great in “Andromeda” in which he plays a somewhat altruistic man-out-of-time who refuses to give up on the idea that light can triumph over darkness. Even for sci-fi, it’s overlooked.

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 1:38pmHercules was supposed to be campy, as was Xena- Sam Raimi. That’s why I liked it. The movie “Darkman” is one of my favorites.

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 2:13pmI know it was meant to be campy, I’m just not a huge fan of camp. Doesn’t make it a bad show, just not a perfect fit for my individual taste is all. But then I liked Babylon 5, which could get me thrown in the Klingon Jail at the average Sci-Fi con… Yep, a pastor and a sci-fi geek!

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 9:05amIt’s refreshing to have a person in the acting profession speak up about his Christian belief and the hypocrisy of Hollywood without fear of reprisal.
Good for you Kevin. Stay strong, America needs more men like you.

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 9:24amI’m horrible with the names of entertainers, but there are more than those two and they all have repeated the same “blacklisted” message; Tom Selleck, the “dark haired nurse from the heyday of ER” (yep, that’s as close as I get) and I believe Linda Carter as well.
I’m way out of my element here, but, how many people would it take, assuming limited ability to contribute from each, to fund a production company to make quality, competitive, family friendly movies using conservative entertainers?

Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Gary Sinese, Stephen Baldwin, Kirk Cameron…and those are just off the top of my head….some of these guys even talk about “secret meetings” of the conservatives and right of center members of Hollywood…the true Christians, social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, even libertarians and true independents…..
Glenn has talked to David Mamet quite a bit…writer and producer…and there are other writers and producers out there as well that might work on shows with left of center views and actors and producers but they try to get in what they can….
and don’t count out the sound guys, the camera guys, the grips, the stuntmen and women, and all the behind the scene people that are just doing their job and can’t stop or influence or help that the writer, producer, and actors spout off socialist stupid comments….
it is always the vocal minority that gets all the attention and the press and the donations because the silent majority is working and sweating and trying to make ends meet…
Obama received only 30% of all possible votes
Romney received just over 27%
90 million possible voters either were not registered or did not vote…over 40%
We have a President that should not be in office… NONE OF THE ABOVE won the election at the Federal and State level….we are a nation ran by NONE OF THE ABOVE and that is why we are a Banana Republic today

We hope you and Mr. Beck will have a great future, we know Mr. Beck would love to be a greater influence in the film industry, with technology and an abundance of actors without work, you never know when that next miracle is around the corner?

right there with you…that is because it is a REAL story….about REAL problems and conflicts….the movie touches the “why” Glenn has been talking about for weeks…
it reminds me a little of “****** Vance” and “Meet Joe Smith”….
chills would be an understatement…near tears thinking that “but for the Grace of God, go I”

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 9:43am@jungle J……………….. Why do people like you think they always have to critize people for things they feel and say? As another human being, others have as much right to express themselves as you do without some insecure, selfish, childish minded person trying to cut them down and make them look foolish just to pump up his own ego. Grow up why don’t you.
