Parents Shocked After Their Down Syndrome Daughter Comes Home From School With Her Feet Duct Taped So Tight She Bruised

Parents are seeking answers from a school that sent their 8-year-old with Down syndrome home with feet bound so tightly with duct tape that it cut off circulation to the point where she couldn’t even walk off the bus.

Indiana 8 Year Old With Down Syndrome Has Shoes Bound to Socks With Duct Tape

Shaylyn Searcy (Image: Indianapolis Star video screenshot)

The parents of Shaylyn Searcy, who attends Westlake Elementary School in Wayne Township, Indiana, recalled their confusion to the Indianapolis Star when their daughter wouldn’t get off the bus because her socks were duct taped to her shoes:

“She said, ‘I can’t. It hurts.’ So we had to carry her off the bus,” said Elizabeth Searcy, 29.

“She had duct tape all the way from her feet up around the tops of her ankles. And it was industrial duct tape. It literally pulled fabric off her socks and vinyl off her shoes, it was so strong.”

Watch this report about the incident:

Elizabeth Searcy said her daughter sometimes has trouble leaving her shoes on, which might have prompted someone to tape them onto the child, but Searcy said, ”I don’t know why they couldn’t have called me again this time.”

The Star reported Shaylyn’s parents taking her back to school with the tape still on her feet to help get it off. It took 30 minutes and left bruises on the girl.

Here’s The Star’s video interview with Shaylyn’s parents:

The school released a statement to RTV6 that read:

“We have had the opportunity to meet with the parents of the student involved in this reported incident and have begun our own investigation. We have notified the Indiana Department of Child Services of the incident, and if warranted, we will file a report with the agency. We have also involved our own law enforcement officers in the investigation. When the investigation into this incident is concluded, we will take appropriate action.”

Kim Dodson, the director of the special-needs advocacy group Arc of Indiana, told The Star the situation is an “outage.” The organization is advocating for laws that would protect children like Shaylyn from abuse of “seclusion and restraint” policies.

In the mean time, Shaylyn’s parents have removed her from Westlake to send her to the school she attended last year, WTHR reported.

Another tragedy at the hands of “Assault Duct-Tape”.
    Congress should act immediately!…
How many children must suffer before something is done about this?

Don’t listen to those “Tape-Nuts” either. How much tape do you need to wrap a deer?

CONGRESS: STOP TAKING BRIBES FROM THE “NATIONAL DUCT-TAPE ASSOCIATION” AND DO YOUR DUTY TO ENACT TAPE CONTROL….. for the children.

That’s ridiculous, no one is advocating a ban on duct tape and to even suggest that is complete fear mongering.

What we are saying that obviously this wouldn’t have happened if we limited duct tape spools to under a foot and a half of actual tape. California already limits tape to 15″ while New York limit’s duct tape spools to 12″. A common sense compromise would be a federal regulation of no spools of duct tape over 15″.

Also, we should create a national database for all those people who buy any duct tape. All tape will have a laser signed serial into every thread of the tape as well.

Obviously assault tape (aka electric tape) is the most vile of all tapes and will be banned as it has no reason to be on American streets unless it’s in the hands of your local power company’s trained staff.

For the rare occasions you think you will want electric tape you can use Scotch. A father in Idaho just last month patched a wire in the attic that squirrels chewed through with Scotch tape and it’s working fine for him so it’ll work fine for the rest of you.

      KEV…

OK Smarty-pants- what about the “Tape-Show” loophole?
If i want to sell my 15″ of tape to another tape enthusiast, am i going to be responsible for the costs incurred by the background check? Will i be held responsible when a psycho buys my tape & uses it for nefarious purposes?
I’ve been a responsible tape owner for years. I don’t deserve this grief!

And what about those quick release tape guns. There light and easy to manuver. Even Piers Morgan can operate one with 76% accuracy. Those should be banned as well. There is no reason any person should need to release more than 3 sq inches of tape at a time.

I guess tomorrow I will get on down to the local hardware store to apply for my concealed carry permit for my PACKING tape.

As a parent of special child, what I have come to learn is that the attention they need is really what all children need…..but it isn’t available in most schools, so like so many we home school……way less problem that having a special child who is also mentally damaged by brutality.

Truth is my child is one of 7 and the smartest…..just has a hard time socially.

Not all Duct Tape needs to be banned. Just the black, Military Grade Tape. The ones with the rapid rolls. No one needs black, Military Grade Tape to tape boxes. It’s only used to tape other people.

You’re talking about mass-taping aren’t you? Yeah, we don’t need automatic or even semi-automatic tape guns on the streets. Our forefather’s never envisioned these types of adhesives or they would have been more explicit about who could have them: regular citizens or just our postal workers and professional movers.

I don’t mean to sound like an insensitive d1ckh3ad, but this is one of the reasons why I really have to question the logic of the fools that decided mainstreaming special needs kids was a good idea.

More than once my kids came home and complained about the special needs kids completely disrupting the class, and destroying a learning environment. Taping the kid down is wrong, but having a class of normal kids held up by a behavioral problem is just as wrong. Why not have a class capable of properly educating kids with needs out of the scope of the “norm”.

Hey, at least she wasn’t lobbing make-believe grenades into make-believe boxes. Might have to start duct taping them too.

Now you can buy duct tape at the hardware stores and K-Mart that is imprinted with pretty colored patterns and child appealing graphics like animal patterns. Targeting tape sales to children is reprehensible as are the movies where tape is used to commit crimes like kidnapping. Stop glorifying tape ownership! Tape has no use outside the battlefield of construction sites.

But no ,she had to be taugt a lesson. And that lesson is ,if you don’t do what you are told you will feel pain. Hi-ler told the jews to sit down and shut up. At worst, our comments were off topic. But, as I have read in another place, sometimes this is the reaction. When day after day you read about all the sick and terrible things people do to one another, people really don’t know how to respond because there are no more words that can be used to describe the anger.

Sorry I am not feeling very PC today. Think I will pull a Ron Paul and say the following….
It is rewarding for you, because you feel like you have done some great thing, and maybe you even put a smile on the kids face. But to the parent that has to deal with the difficulties of this type of child it is no blessing. For whatever reason your unfortunate enough to have a handicapped child, you make the best of it. And no matter how much you love that child you would much rather that child have a productive normal life. If you really want to help out, take the child for a few hours so the parents can have a break.

Cbrian, you’re so full of crap. I have a special needs child. He’s down syndrome and autistic. I was asked one time if I cold change him, and “cure” him, would I? I said no, because he wouldn’t be him. I would only make it where he could communicate better. I have bad days that I want to tear my hair out, of course, but I have those with my “normal” child, too.

This is straight up child abuse. This is not wanting to deal with the fact that the child takes her shoes off. My son would undress on the bus…I made him a bright orange jump suit that zipped up the back and we drew flames on it…his idea. Problem solved.

Simple answer to that – teachers union membership, A teacher would literally have to murder one of the kids in order to be fired, and even at that, he / she would be able to collect his / her union pension while in prison. I’m not being sarcastic – this happened in Michigan several years ago to a teacher who was jailed for molesting several of his charges.

How is not keeping your shoes on running amok? How about give the parent a call before restraining. These people are trained to deal with a lot worse than a kid who won’t keep shoes on. Not to mention the child was harmed.
On top of that, it is the principle of the matter. If the parents had done this they would be dealing with CPS, and may even loose their child. So if I don’t have the right, the school sure the hell doesn’t.
And one more thing, you tie my kids feet like that, you won’t have to worry about finding a new job.

There is a physical reason that kids with DS do not like to wear shoes….they have very wide feet and most shoes do not fit them very well-if they have any sensory issues, which is also common in DS, it makes shoes ten times more uncomfortable,

Hello rj. Its pretty bad when these progressive bloggers make fun of a special needs child. Makes you wonder who is raising their own kids to be bullies. The same ones that spat on us and called us baby killers when we got back, turned out to have abortions. Huh

This family lives right down the street from me! Incredible that someone would do this to her! I wondered if the blaze would pick it up!

Criminal charges against whoever did this, in addition to being FIRED.

Then sue the **** out of the school, at least for FULL TUITION THROUGH 12TH GRADE AT A PRIVATE SCHOOL THAT CARES.

I bet if a kid did this physical harm to this girl, that it will be far less of a punishment than a child making a paper gun.
    End Public Education!

Just keep sitting on your azzes, Parents, twiddling your thumbs while allowing the Public Schools to abuse your children. If that’s your attitude; if you haven’t regularly visited the school, or gotten a copy of the schools behavioral standards and read them to make sure they’re not stripping your children of their innocence, you’re not worthy.

I do believe that homeschooling is the best option.
No one would tape my daughter’s socks on. In fact, there is no need for shoes in my house while school is going on.
When my daughter (ADD and dreamy) entered 1st grade, she was continually put to the front of the class, after I ask that she remain in the back. The year before, the Kindergarten teacher was able to keep her on task by putting her in the back (with no one talking behind her), I know what is best for my kids, so I pulled her out and started homeschooling her and her 4-year-old sister. Today at 14 and 12, they are in Early College.
While this isn’t akin to the duct tape, it was not the best environment for my daughter. I educated her myself with the help of Alpha Omega Publications, Saxon Math and Khan Academy.

Charges need to be filed against whoever did this. That person has no heart! Parents, take her out of that school! If she has pain in her legs in the near future, have her looked at for blood clots.

This is nothing compared to what the eugenicists will be doing to the handicapped in a few years.

Yes, it is an outage. An outage of human decency.
…On another note, it is getting really soppy here. Er, slippy here. Er, slotty here???
Also an outage of an Indiana school that deserves, methinks, a drome/drone strike.

Getting real sick of the blaze censoring my posts, when I don’t use any words that I can’t say on the radio, nor attack other posters. They’re censoring for content and ideas now it seems. Their forum layout also is horrid and clunky.

Stop sending your special needs child to a system full of teachers that doesn’t consider her special.

In most cases parents cannot afford to send their special needs children to any other school.

Why send them any wheres in 99.9% of all cases no one is going to love and care and teach a special needs child better than a loving parent. Parents keep sayin g they want their child to have a normal childhood and send them to public schools….here’s a clue normal childhood sucks nowadays and public schools are a nightmare.
