New Details in Massive Manhunt for Ex-LAPD Cop Accused of Killing 3

LOS ANGELES (TheBlaze/AP) — An ex-Los Angeles police officer who authorities say went on a deadly shooting rampage to punish those he blamed for his firing killed three people, setting off a manhunt that stirred fear across several states and Mexico.

The search for Christopher Dorner focused late Thursday on Big Bear Lake, about 80 miles east of Los Angeles, where police found a burned-out pickup truck that belonged to Christopher Dorner. San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said officers were going door to door looking for him.

Throughout the day, thousands of heavily armed officers patrolled highways in the state, while some stood guard outside the homes of people police say Dorner vowed to attack in an angry rant posted online. Electronic billboards that usually alert motorists about the commute urged them to call 911 if they saw him.

Via the Associated Press:

“I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare” to Los Angeles Police Department officers, on or off duty, said the manifesto. It also asserted: “Unfortunately, I will not be alive to see my name cleared. That’s what this is about, my name. A man is nothing without his name.”

Dorner, 33, had multiple weapons including an assault rifle, said Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck, who urged him to surrender at an unusual press conference in an underground room at police headquarters where there was more security than normal.

“Of course he knows what he’s doing, we trained him. He was also a member of the Armed Forces,” he said. “It is extremely worrisome and scary.”

The nearly 10,000-member LAPD dispatched some of its officers to protect more than 40 potential targets across the region on Thursday. The department also pulled officers from motorcycle duty, fearing they would make for easy targets.

“I never had the opportunity to have a family of my own, I’m terminating yours,” the manifesto said.

At one point, officers guarding one location mistakenly opened fire on a pickup truck believing it matched the description of Dorner’s dark colored 2005 Nissan Titan, injuring two innocent occupants.

The chief said there had been a “night of extreme tragedy in the Los Angeles area” and that the department was taking measures to ensure the safety of officers and their families.

The search for Dorner, who was fired from the LAPD in 2008 for making false statements, began after he was linked to a weekend killing in which one of the victims was the daughter of a former police captain who had represented him during the disciplinary hearing.

Monica Quan and her fiance, Keith Lawrence, were found shot in their car at a parking structure at their condominium on Sunday in Irvine. Quan, 28, was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Cal State Fullerton. Lawrence, 27, was a public safety officer at the University of Southern California.

Police said Dorner implicated himself in the couple’s killings in the manifesto posted on Facebook. They believe he wrote it because there were details in it only he would know.

In the post, Dorner wrote that he knew he would be vilified by the LAPD and the news media, but that “unfortunately, this is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name.”

Dorner was with the LAPD from 2005 until 2008, when he was fired for making false statements.

Quan’s father, a former LAPD captain who became a lawyer in retirement, represented Dorner in front of the Board of Rights, a tribunal that ruled against Dorner, police said. Randal Quan retired in 2002 and later served as chief of police at Cal Poly Pomona before he started practicing law. Quan did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

According to documents from a court of appeals hearing in October 2011, Dorner was fired from the LAPD after he made a complaint against his field training officer, Sgt. Teresa Evans. Dorner said that in the course of an arrest, Evans kicked suspect Christopher Gettler, a schizophrenic with severe dementia.

Richard Gettler, the schizophrenic man’s father, gave testimony that supported Dorner’s claim. After his son was returned on July 28, 2007, Richard Gettler asked “if he had been in a fight because his face was puffy” and his son responded that he was kicked twice in the chest by a police officer.

After his dismissal, Dorner said in his online rant that he lost everything, including his relationships with his mother, sister and close friends.

“Self-preservation is no longer important to me. I do not fear death as I died long ago,” the manifesto. “I was told by my mother that sometimes bad things happen to good people. I refuse to accept that.”

Dorner said he would use all of his training to avoid capture and track his targets.

In addition to police work, Dorner served in the Naval Reserves, earning a rifle marksman ribbon and pistol expert medal. He served in a naval undersea warfare unit and various aviation training units, according to military records, and took a leave from the LAPD and deployed to Bahrain in 2006 and 2007.

“I will utilize every bit of small arms training, demolition, ordinance and survival training I’ve been given,” the manifesto read. “You have misjudged a sleeping giant.”

As officers searched for Dorner, there was a report of a shooting in Corona that involved two LAPD officers working a security detail, police said. A resident pointed out Dorner to the officers who followed until his pickup stopped and the driver got out and fired a rifle at them. A bullet grazed an officer’s head.

Later, two officers on routine patrol in neighboring Riverside were ambushed at a stop light by a motorist who drove up next to them and opened fire with a rifle. One died and the other was seriously wounded but was expected to survive, Riverside police Chief Sergio Diaz said.

Diaz said news organizations should withhold the officers’ names because the suspect had made clear that he considers police and their families “fair game.”

The hunt for Dorner led to two errant shootings in the pre-dawn darkness Thursday.

LAPD officers guarding a “target” named in the posting shot and wounded two women in suburban Torrance who were in a pickup but were not involved, authorities said. Beck said one woman was in stable condition with two gunshot wounds and the other was being released after treatment.

“Tragically we believe this was a case of mistaken identity by the officers,” Beck said.

Minutes later, Torrance officers responding to a report of gunshots encountered a dark pickup matching the description of Dorner’s, police said. A collision occurred and the officers fired on the pickup. The unidentified driver was not hit and it turned out not to be the suspect vehicle, they said.

In San Diego, where police say Dorner tied up an elderly man and unsuccessfully tried to steal his boat Wednesday night, Naval Base Point Loma was locked down Thursday after a Navy worker reported seeing someone who resembled Dorner.

Navy Cmdr. Brad Fagan said officials don’t believe he was on base Thursday but had checked into a base hotel on Tuesday and left the next day without checking out. Numerous agencies guarded the base. Fagan said Dorner was honorably discharged and that his last day in the Navy was last Friday.

Nevada authorities also looked for Dorner because he owns a house nine miles from the Las Vegas Strip, according to authorities and property records.

Look, I get that people are mad at what was said about police officers, but tone down the anger and please try to converse like rational adults. I know a few police officers, and they are not like this creep that Reportanddeport is describing as a “typical police officer.” I argue that this creep is atypical as far as police officers, as most of my experiences with law enforcement types has been professional and courteous. Are there crooked cops? Most definitely, but they are few and far between. Please do not judge the forest for the tree.

This hasn’t gotten the national media attention it deserves.

But then it doesn’t placate to the current media campaign for making owning a gun an incredible hassle full of hoops to jump through.

The current rampage is being done by a man who:
Had an extensive background check by both state and federal authorities.
Passed psych/mental evaluations of both civilian and military types.
      Attained Top Secret clearances.
Was deemed trained and fit to carry by the State of California.

Basically all of the things that the media is currently saying that will stop psychotics from terrorizing your family this man has been through, and yet he is still trying to kill people.

This story demonstrates that no matter how many laws and loops people must jump through people will always try to kill people. It is wrong to take the tools away that people can use to defend themselves. And with the stories of a police department acting as judge, jury, and executioner, well, people need to be able to protect themselves from that too. It’s no wonder the massive amounts of national coverage one would expect in a situation like this isn’t occurring. A story like this only sells the idea that everyone should be prepared to defend themselves in all situations.

      @PacificNWRunner

The LAPD isn’t doing it’s reputation any justice by shooting up Innocent people in their quest to be judge, jury, and executioner.

The officers involved in these shootings should be in jail, the fact that they are not is a crime in and of itself being perpetrated my LAPD leadership and the CDLE.

That said, the man killing cops is a psychotic *****. But that doesn’t give the police the right to fire on innocent people. Again, these officers should be in jail. The LAPD actions are only making a psycho look like he has a point. A tidbit of the local coverage we are not seeing on the national level:

It involved LAPD detectives from the Hollywood division, who were reportedly on a protective detail for an LAPD captain and his family named in Dorner’s manifesto.

Emma Hernandez, 71, was delivering the Los Angeles Times with her daughter, 47-year-old Margie Carranza, when officers apparently mistook their pickup for that of Dorner.

Hernandez was shot in the back, and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Carranza suffered a wound from glass that struck her hand and received stitches.

“There was no warning, there was no orders or no commands… just gunshots,” Jonas told reporters.

@PubliusScipio: Far from moron here. If I owe PacificNWRunner an apology, consider it done. However the “sarcasm”, if it is such, is not real clear as it depends on who and which comment he/she was posting iin response to. PacificNWRunner did not state it was general sarcasm nor did he/she specifically mention who they were addressing with said sarcasm. You can take what they said different ways depending on who they were addressing with the comment. I am not real big on blanket statements and that’s what I perceived in PacificNWRunner’s comment and assumed it was my last comment that he was targeting. If this is not the case, and is truly sarcasm in response to the original post by ReportandDeport, consider this an apology to you, PacificNWRunner. Otherwise, the apology is null and void.

Usually if I post sarcastically I make it obvious by stating it’s sarcastic. You pretty much have to in order to be clear on these message boards, else comments can be misconstrued. I see it happen here often and elsewhere.

I don’t think this guy is dumb, maybe mental, but not dumb. The majority of the cops after him are dumb.
He’s going after current and former LA cops. After shooting a few, he somehow “attempts” to steal a boat in San Diego? What happened? And her dropped his badge and wallet there? Really? Fishy.
Then somehow he appears at other locations, including having his truck show up in Big Bear on fire. Huh? Why Big Bear? On fire? Why not park it hidden way?
I think he’s in LA and leading the dumb cops to search for him in a variety of other locations than where he, and his targets are. I think he is trying to throw off the cops from his real trail. I think we will hear about another cop being shot in LA soon.
I feel for this guy, as I know what it’s like to be set up, lied about and fired from a career you hoped to do you whole life. Still gives him no reason to go on a wacko killing spree.

I do not agree with his killing anyone, but I do remember back to what happened to my law enforcement career, sometimes you are just guilty because that is the way some people want it, facts don’t matter, truth doesn’t matter, people will protect other people’s secrets because other have or will return the favor. These are not the actions of a guilty man (his firing) these are the actions of someone who finally had enough and snapped, the fact that he supports President Obama shows that he is now insane. BTW… Thank you Mary Applegate for ruining my career in 1982. Unlike this Officer, I was able to recover. If any of his words are true, I hope those people feel guilty for pushing this guy over the edge. I hope that he does the right thing, to lay down on the ground, look up at the bright blue sky and end his own life before hurting anyone else.

The LAPD hold a neighborhood hostage all for one target? Why not move the target to a jail cell and protect it there? After all a jail is full of cops and a gun free zone so it is safe, right. Why start taking out their problems on the innocent. I guess they don’t think like decent human beings. Just kill anything that comes within 100 yards without warning. I expect bad things from LAPD but this is incredible. And they will get a pass I am sure. I need to get out of California, this place is crazy.

There is a bigger problem with the police these days. Paranoia is rampant. Steroid use is epidemic. An attitude of being more valuable and important than anyone else in society justifying extreme violence to protect themselves at all costs. Covering for other officers bad behavior. All this is disturbing and is coming to a head. Why become a cop then live with the paranoia and fear? A sense of being trapped? This is either mind control or the sociopath hiring sociopath, filling the organization top to bottom. Are these guys being made or is it something else? One thing if for sure, the boiling point is here.

I TRIED to give the POS a hearing. Went to Gawker, got as far as “list of places I have lived.”
    The following conclusions were inescapable.
    1. He’s mental.
    2. His fellow cops are often pieces of sheite and of no noticeably higher Moral Integrity than the rest of us. Which begs the question–WHY should such immature and undisciplined individuals have power over ANYONE? This in SPITE of the fact we have only Officer Sheitebag’s Word for anything that happened. Even if he made up 90% of it and Spun the rest, NOBODY here comes across as worthy of the Badge. So why should they HAVE one? Why should THEY have the PRESUMPTION of Ordering their scarcely less honorable Fellow Dumbcits around?
This tends to confirm, my recent experience that reversed a lifetime of honoring the uniform and badge, I now believe, based on those recent experiences, that most cops do NOT have even BASIC integrity or sense of SERVICE, just a Glorified Pack Instinct. I’ve SEEN it. It disappointed while piszing me off. But then that’s the Nature of Our Debased Republic.
    3. Even granting the Principle of “presumed innocence” and “not wanting to unfairly smear someone in the press” The LAPD is COVERING UP for their own “Blue Line” here. UNACCEPTABLE!
    4. It is hard to avoid the suspicion, if not the cogent conclusion that the LahPeds and their Fellow BlueBoots simply hosed the VERY people they are charged to protect simply because they were in the wrong color truck! TWICE!

At minimum I have contempt for the low amount of physical courage that gives rise to such horrendous Fire Discipline.
      5. One suspects the murder of some ordinary civilian would not inspire the Zeal with which the LahPeds are responding, if nervously and incompetently. It is UANACCEPTABLE that “The Thin Blue Line” should regard the death of one of their own as MORE significant than the death of an ordinary citizen. THAT is the VERY attitude that DISQUALIFIES one from having POWER over his fellows. The SERVANT attitude that MUST be foremost in anyone we Trust with Power would automatically and naturally reject even the CONCEPT of “one of our own.” The SERVANT says “my OWN are those I am tasked to protect!” THEIR Lives and well being are ORDERS of MAGNITUDE more important that “Us” in Uniform. Anyone with ANY other attitude CAN NOT be trusted with POWER. Once again, and for reasons polar opposite to the reasons most people think, the LAPD stinks. Another sterling consequence of the Rodney King/OJ Simpson Travesty of Political Correctness, which should be called by its proper name: “The Van Jones Doctrine”–aka Eff Whitey.

The Big Mick, My point precisely! “They”, the police and government officials, need the weapons they don’t want us to have in order to protect “themselves” from the bad guys, but we should be disarmed or lowly armed and hope the police arrive in time to save us from harm. This is exactly why we should be allowed to have AR15 and AK47 to defend ourselves if we so choose. Personally I do not own a modern sporting firearm, but do own handguns and shotguns to defend me and my family. The 2nd Amend was founded to allow citizens be armed equal to the arms of the military at the time. Musket = Musket , AR15 = AR15, if the police need them to defend themselves , then so do we!

I certainly appreciate the work they do and immagine that news reporting is likely very hectic, but it seems they try to cram so many adjectives into a sentence that they never step back and make sure that the sentence actually meets the definition of a sentence. If he is determined to pick a war with the police then he should have never warned them nor said anything. He should have just commenced. They would soon realize who it was eventually.. He has given them a lot of info when he sent his manifesto to them. They have scores of psychiatrist and psychologist gleaning a lot of info about him just off of his writing. He will be killed.

Dude is making a big splash with the manifesto. He is terrorizing those that he believes terrorized him first. I question the idea that this “altercation” is 100% his fault. Realize that I do disagree entirely with this line of action, but a lot of his statements have the ring of truth. I am about 1/2 done with the letter, so gonna finish up now.

If he would have done that, the MSM and LAPD can shape the narrative. He bipassed them and provided his own narrative. He doesn’t care if he dies. He will take as many of them as possible before he does though. I read his manifesto, he had declared all out war against the LAPD.

And I count 11 pages. Are there two versions?

You deserve a salute, GC, I couldn’t make it past the “list of places I have lived” which ain’t even half-way to the good part, and teaching 8th Grade English I’ve read some BAD prose.

      THEGREATCARNAC

It would be an even Greater Carnac if you were as aware of your issues and demons as we all are. This situation has nothing to do with race, but your stereotyping has everything to do with the divide of this nation.

It is extremely difficult to get a conceal carry in LA county… I have friends who still live there. You have to prove you have to make business deposits of large amounts of money and need to carry a weapon. Self defense isn’t good enough. So he is running around in almost a gun free zone

Um, he wrote a letter-they dub it a manifesto. How do we know who wrote it? He complained about one of the most corrupt police depts in our nation & he got fired. All news today had already judged this guy to be worst human on planet armed to the teeth & wanting to kill the entire nations police & military. Wow that’s a lot to believe. Police seem to be releasing only what they want to poison public opinion of this guy so he really has no choice now but to commit suicide by police. What other choice have they given him. Makes me wonder why?

Is it bad to find amusement in all of this? Not the loss of life the the possible police cover up and an ex cop turned rambo vowing to bring justice to his name?

His politics aside, I see his dilemma and I find it amusing as well that the tail seems to be wagging the police dog. Not how I would have solved my issue, but he has the skills and training to do a lot of damage and leave a lot of corrupt cops in his wake. More power to him…Hollywood is already writing the script on this one. LL Cool J could play this guy.

Why is it that I heard reports on the radio, that this deranged person, wants to make a difference regarding gun control, and is a President Obama is Lord lover?

This man is probably the most dangerous man in America, and is probably the type that would take a shot gun to one your elementary schools, or some other mass shooting? You people in the press, stock up on energy drinks, because this guy wants your wet dreams of Americans dying in the streets with blood to come true?

His target is not the LAPD, but the 2nd Amendment, and he has the training and skills to make his threat not be ignored?

Yeah, and I bet you he is being hunted down because he has dirt on corrupt cops like your “Buddies”. I don’t trust pigs. But I do trust a pig who is a whistleblower. The LAPD is as crooked as our Presidents Administration. I’m not gonna judge this guy until I hear him speak live on TV. That “Manifesto” could be some BS prepared statement the LAPD spawned as soon as this guy started sayin names. Don’t believe your TV,Radio,or Glenn Beck

He doesn’t want to be caught alive. He knows he will die. He considers himself dead already.

And for those that claim he’s a *******, obama lover, etc….

” I didn’t vote in this last election as my choice of candidate, John Huntsman, didn’t win the primary candidacy for his party. Mr. President, I haven’t agreed with all of your decisions but of course I haven’t agreed with all of your predecessors decisions.”

Doesn’t sound like a far left liberal, although he may be closer to Libertarian. I’m not ashamed of that association. If the corruption in his manifesto is true and only just the tip of the iceburg, I can understand why he has this hatred. I don’t agree or condone murder, but his anger is understandable…

He compliments Obama but also compliments Bush Sr.

Outside of him going on a murderous shooting spree, support of AWB, Obama and Feinstien, I kinda like the guy.

Yeah but when he calls “Biteme Joe” “charismatic” you KNOW he has lost any tether to reality, so all other praises and blames are suspect.
