A Congressman Actually Fired His Spokesman Over This Embarrassing Tweet

Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) actually fired spokesman Phil Hardy this week over an extremely awkward tweet was posted on the congressman’s official Twitter account during the Super Bowl.

“Me likey Broke Girls,” the tweet read. The message was reportedly posted shortly after a risqué commercial for the CBS sitcom “2 Broke Girls,” in which the show’s two female stars danced around a stripper pole.

Yeah, awkward. It was deleted just 14 seconds later, however, the Internet never forgets.

Apparently, Hardy intended to send the tweet from his own account but got mixed up.

Labrador’s office apologized for the tweet, but the congressman decided to take further action and fire Hardy on Monday.

“That’s Raul’s call…I did not make the decision,” Jake Ball, Labrador’s district director, explained.

I think the Tweet stuff is out of control and don’t understand it either, but it is a big deal in society today. I find the bigger issue here to be the PC police. I really fail to see what’s so offensive about the tweet. Have we gone down the PC road so far that what he said is a fireable offense? PC is destroying this nation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z85X6im-4Qs

Pass out buttplugs and ****** at the universities (see Drudge), educate children with fisting kits in grade school (see Cass Sunstein). Tear the moral fabric of America and destroy the family. “Social media” is generally a bad idea. Sure folks, go ahead and put all your likes, dislikes, feelings, rantings, pictures of you, pictures of your kids, pictures of where you were and what you did last night or what you’re doing now……..all to be recorded, forever, in a realm of space that’s open and available to everyone. “Private settings”…..you really think your stuff is private once you click that button and send your life to cyberspace???? If yes, then you’re an idiot.

This guy is working for a boss that’s in full public view anyway. I would fire him immediately for bad judgement and immaturity. Who knows what he’ll screw up. This was a warning sign to the congressman and he took action.

Having read the threads before yours I was wondering if I read the article correctly. I had to reread it to make sure.

Of course the Rep. was right and justified in firing HIS SPOKESMAN for the tweet. Not because of what he said, but because he sent it out on the Rep’s OFFICIAL account, thereby suggesting the Rep. saw the tweet and approved of it’s sending. He was fired because of his mistake in not using HIS account, instead of the Rep’s.

In this idiotic society, the Rep. could and probably would be crucified for this tweet at some point, even though he knew nothing about it and never approved it. Not to mention the embarrassment it could cause his wife (if he is married.) Look at the condemnation Romney went through for Bain and taxes, even though it was never proven or substantiated he did anything wrong. People believe anything they read without letting facts get in the way. They don’t investigate further because, well because, it would mean they would actually have to expend effort and energy. It might take them away from ‘Housewives’ or ‘Bachelor’ or ‘Survivor’ or ‘trying to make a million by blowing your nose.’

The Rep. had no choice if he cared anything for his political future. Maybe the spokesman made a regrettable silly mistake, but maybe it will help him not make another one in the future which may cost American lives. You know, like Clinton!

I think we are all missing an important part of this picture. We don’t know what was going on behind the scenes in the work place. Was this guy a problem in other areas? Did he do a good job for the congressman? Were there reasons that his job was on the line and the Congressman regarded his poor judgment as the final straw? We can’t judge the Congressman’s actions without knowing what was going on behind the closed doors of the office.

As for Twitter, anyone in any position of responsibility is a fool to ‘tweet’. Twitter is for the kardashians, the Lohans, teenagers and others who think that their lives are of un-ending interest to others. Adults should learn from these lessons and not ‘tweet’.

I agree, we don’t know the whole story. But I believe in a second chance when it comes to someones livelyhood. It’s a tough economy and I see stories everyday of people “losing it” over lost income. If this was the only thing he did wrong, I would have laughed it off. On the other hand I’ve said many times that professional people need to keep the thought of the moment to themselves.

I don’t think I’d have fired him. He clearly logged into the wrong twitter account from a home or work computer while watching TV, realized it, deleted it. I’d smack him on the back of the head, sure, for not paying attention to what he was logging into. I wouldn’t fire him though. This rates on the level of sending a risque text message meant for your wife instead accidentally sending it to a guy friend or your mom.

Sadly, in today’s day and age, everyone is offended about something and some liberal activist group will step forward with a press conference about how that tweet denigrates women and “Sets them back” a few decades. Yawn.

People do not understand social media, neither do they understand the rights that protect them? Fire me for a tweet, and I might have to hire a lawyer to demonstrate you had no grounds to do so, since the design of Twitter basically makes it impossible to communicate in the legal context necessary to articulate the context of communication, with only 140 characters, or what ever it is, up to community standards?

Someone puts your name and photo on a member ship for clubbing seals, or sex torture clubs, or whatever it is that could harm your reputation, a revenge porn site, your photo and much of personal information is owned by your copy right?

The same people that want to regulate your guns, have fired a spokesman for a tweet, a communication medium not designed for anything but informal communictions that could be easily taken out of context or misunderstood, this is not Mom, this is not Dad, this is a LEGISLATOR?

I hear the words “Broke Girls” don’t know what that it is, I can go to a search engine and find out what is MIGHT mean? 2 Broke girls is basically two professional actors on tv a show, who, with the support of a media production company, try to walk the fine line between humor and suggestive behavior, similar to the 2 1/2 men show, (get it, the number 2 – duh?), talking about the possible situations of young people trying to get through life sharing an apartment?

Freedom of association, freedom of speech?

This may have been merely silly but it certainly doesn’t constitute something over which a person should be fired. Raul Labrador should be ‘fired’ from his job by being voted out of office. Rather than sucking up to hispanics, the GOP should let them go over to the Democrats, where they really belong anyway.
What’s a guy like Labrador doing in the congressional delegation from a nice state like Idaho, anyway?
