With President Barack Obama sitting just feet away, Dr. Benjamin Carson stood up for conservative principles in his speech at Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast, discussing the national debt, political correctness and even healthcare. Readers loved his speech so much that TheBlaze’s story on it went viral.
On Friday, Carson appeared on Fox News’ “Hannity” to explain why he felt compelled to speak out against the big government policies endorsed by Obama, in front of Obama.
Carson, a renown neurosurgeon, said the response to his speech has been “overwhelmingly” positive. However, he argued he didn’t make a conservative argument, but rather a “logical” and “common-sense” one.
“I don’t know where we left our brains,” he told host Sean Hannity.
Carson went on to talk about his life story, saying he grew up in a single parent home in a poverty-stricken area. He said his mother “refused to be a victim” and “never felt sorry for herself,” despite only having a third grade education.
Regarding his comments on political correctness, the neurosurgeon emphasized the importance of “freedom of speech and freedom of expression” in the United States.
“And yet, we have imposed upon people restrictions on what they say, on what they can think. The media, I think is the largest proponent of this,” he explained.
He lambasted the media’s outrage at Brent Musburger’s flattering comments about Alabama beauty queen Katherine Webb during the BCS National Championship.
Watch a portion of Carson’s interview on “Hannity” via Fox News below:
In the second portion of his interview with Hannity, Carson argued he didn’t craft his message based on who was going to be in attendance. In other words, wasn’t trying to stick it to Obama in his speech.
“It really didn’t matter who I was sitting in front of, because I always pray before I give a speech and I ask God to give me the right things to say. And I think that it’s very rare these days for people to speak the truth,” he said. “Meanwhile, the fabric of our nation is being destroyed.
One of the “real dangers” facing America, according to Carson, is the fact that people don’t know “anything” about things like history or technology. “They don’t think for themselves,” he added.
Seizing upon what many of Carson’s supporters are probably wondering, Hannity asked him if he would ever consider running for president. The doctor did not it rule out, but said God would have to “grab him by the collar and make him do it.”
The Wall Street Journal too in an opinion piece titled “Ben Carson for President” called up his potential for the Oval Office. Here’s a bit from WSJ regarding Carson’s “un-PC” ideas at the White House prayer breakfast, which included flat tax and healthcare:
Dr. Carson tossed over the PC police years ago. Raised by a single mother in inner-city Detroit, he was as he tells it “a horrible student with a horrible temper.” Today he’s director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins and probably the most renowned specialist in his field.
[...]
Not surprisingly, a practicing physician has un-PC thoughts on health care:
“Here’s my solution: When a person is born, give him a birth certificate, an electronic medical record, and a health savings account to which money can be contributed—pretax—from the time you’re born ’til the time you die. If you die, you can pass it on to your family members, and there’s nobody talking about death panels. We can make contributions for people who are indigent. Instead of sending all this money to some bureaucracy, let’s put it in their HSAs. Now they have some control over their own health care. And very quickly they’re gong to learn how to be responsible.”
The Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon may not be politically correct, but he’s closer to correct than we’ve heard in years.

You and others who can only see color/race–you wouldn’t know a truly brillant, patriotic, sensible MAN if you saw one!!!
As I have said about OB since hearing him for the first time early in his campaign desires years ago, I wish he were purple or green so that people would believe me that I DO NOT AGREE WITH HIS IDEOLOGY AND PURPOSES FROM THE BEGINNING! His early “slick” talking immediately let me know that he was not the type of patriot that I was willing to let run my country and life!
Dr. Carson on the other hand, even though I strongly disagree with his choice of religious affiliation, is a man of intelligence, common sense, integrity, work ethic, and love–all those things that God can give to good leaders whatever they personal pursuits and use for a period to keep our Country on track.
If not Dr. Carson, may God show us another he has anointed for the purpose and may we be able to understand the brilliance of God’s lead.

He did however speak about bad policies, some of which the president is responsible for, and then offered some sound and wise options and ideas. Feb. 9, 2013 at 6:42amKatzkiner seems to have some obstacles in his view.
What we need in our leaders, representatives and legislation are the principles of freedom and Dr Carson clearly runs with those principles
while the Democratic Party, Obama, the wider roster of Communists, Socialists and marxists and some opportunists who registered as Republicans run opposite to the principles of freedom and with the principles of manipulation, micro management and THEFT of property!
There are clear reasons why the opposite crowd has worked to gain so much power and influence in our society and culture and now that they have, the same reasons are behind
the dumbing down, history revision, manipulation and alternate distractions of our our education system.
The massive debt build up
the attempt to add precedents to denial of the 2nd and other amendments
the lack of attention to or corruption of truth by our media, pundits and schools
WHere Dr CCarson goes from here, I will be interested to see, but I ask him not to sit down!
That is a real “American” mind that we need to help steer the debate and the country.

Feb. 9, 2013 at 7:03amREALINDEPENDENT,
It’s not about being anti Obama.
It’s about being PRO AMERICAN PRINCIPLES and ANTI anti-American principles.
In Obama’s election victory speech, he said the founders knew that no matter who you are, you can make it in America. What Obama and so many like him refuse to recognize or respect is that the founders knew that because they didn’t give the government much power. Minimal interference!
Alexander Hamilton argued that there was no need for a Bill of Rights because the Constitution clearly only gave specific power to government. As James Madison said in Federalist Paper 45, ” “The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined.” They did add the Bill of Rights to place an exclamation point on the Constitution to be sure that government understands that it is LIMITED in power to interfere with our private lives, freedom, rights and prosperity. The 10th amendment is an additional clarifier. It was all written clearly so that even the least educated could understand, but now, it gets very little clarification or explantion or homework time in our schools.
THAT enables people like Obama to say (without alarming his followers) the Constitution says what government can’t do to you but doesn’t say what it can. IT DOES say what he can do! TENTH Amendment! He can leave the power in its legally defined place, with the states and the people!

A lot of conservatives have just seen an example of the kind of person they want to represent OUR nation, and to be OUR steward of OUR Constitution. Yes, with thorough vetting we may well come to realize that Dr Carson is not the man that he appears to be in his speech. Dr Carson may not be qualified to represent the needs of OUR nation, but the very nature of the man he portrayed himself to be is the nature of the person that we would trust with OUR Constitution. Maybe another person would better fit the nature represented in Dr Carsons’ speech.

Feb. 9, 2013 at 9:38amIf anyone wants to see for themselves how the media works in this country, go to the NBC news website and type Dr. Carson or Dr. Benjamin Carson into the search box. You will find ONE small story from an Alabama NBC station, and that small story only talks about Christians being warned to speak up (and noted it was a “mostly Christian” audience )
Go to CBS news and you will find NOTHING about Dr. Carson and the Prayer breakfast.
Go to ABC news and again…….NOTHING about the prayer breakfast.
Some of the sites had glowing articles about Dr, Carson from the past, saying that he is a wonderful gifted surgeon. Watch to see if these stories disappear.
These are the lengths this media will go to protect this president. Can you imagine the coverage if the keynote speaker at one of Bush’s prayer breakfasts had gotten up and politely slammed all of his policies ?

Feb. 9, 2013 at 9:53amI was an early supporter of Herman Cain, and made contributions to the campaigns of Allen West and Mia Love. That said, I would now have reservations about the Republican Party nominating a black candidate for POTUS. The Democrats, their allies in the media, nearly every so-called “black leader” and black organization would employ their usual dirty tactics when faced with a black conservative. Only a small percentage of blacks or even slightly liberal whites would vote for someone they considered an “Uncle Tom”, while a Democrat would have to make a campaign appearance wearing KKK robes to turn them against him. (Even that would be no guarantee — look at the career of Robert Byrd.) What’s more, Obama has set the concept of a black POTUS back by a century among many whites.
I may be old and cynical, but the GOP has to purge itself of the conciliatory “old guard”, take off the gloves and fight with as much or more spirit and resolve as the Democrats. It has to stop “bringing a kinfe to a gunfight.” It has to realize that the politically ignorant comprise the largest voting bloc and launch an aggressive information war. Only at that point will a black Republican become a viable candidate for POTUS.

Feb. 9, 2013 at 1:38pmHere are the differences I see in Dr. Carson and our President… His mother worked to support her children.. and I am almost certain that Obama’s mother was on welfare off and on throughout her life. Carson is well spoken.. and clearly well educated.. Obama can’t give a speech without a teleprompter. And they are never his own speeches.. they are written by one of his Socialist or Marxist nimwits. He couldn’t speak from the heart if he wanted to. Although Carson’s mother only had a 3rd grade education she made sure her children spent their time educating themselves and probably took them to church every Sunday.. while Obama’s family were Marxist and sent him into the hands of Communist’s/Marxists and Socialist. I don’t think Obama ever earned a thing on his own.. he had to many evil people around him brainwashing him and giving him everything..thats why he’s never in the White House when things like Benghazi happen! Feb. 9, 2013 at 11:09pmYour naive if you think President Obama didn’t realize this person wouldn’t speak against some of his policies. Bush would never have allowed anyone to speak at this event if he knew they weren’t supportive of his opinions. But our current President isn’t afraid of that and, in fact, invited him to speak.
But SendTheMeteors will answer your questions for you. Will this person ever run for President? Answer: no. Will there be a flat tax enacted in your lifetime? Answer: no.
Dr. Carson says, “I ask God to give me the right things to say.” So is he giving voice to the Word of God? Answer: no, he’s giving his opinion. And if he thinks God is telling him what to say, well so does the Westboro Baptist Church and Pat Robertson and that unshaven guy on the street corner and every evangelist who ever took to the airwaves. Not to mention those those Mullahs in Iran.
Everybody and their brother thinks God is talking to them. And every single one of them is hearing something different from God.
So he has asked God to tell him what to say. That’s fine. But please don’t say God told you what to say.

Feb. 9, 2013 at 1:41amCarson is an independent voter, he doesn’t like labels. He doesn’t like either party. He is not on either side, but for anyone who has common sense. He also doesn’t like being called conservative.
Also his health care reform ideas which he goes further into his book are decidedly middle of the road. Somewhere between some of the better ideas represented in Obamacare with plenty of other ideas that were ignored.

Besides, I’d rather depend on someone with God on his side than someone who follows Alinsky and other writers, some who dedicate their writing to SATAN.

Feb. 9, 2013 at 12:05pmThis last election proved that the MSM runs this country. The masses of people who get their news exclusively from the MSM are the ones who were scared to death of Romney and conservatives in general. The MSM reports what they want and how they want to spin it. Basically, the MSM will do anything, tell lies, manipulate the story or just not report the facts to Obama’s favor. That will not last forever. It will fail when the people wake up to the MSM’s treachery. Then there will be consequences.

Carson ideology is “common sense/logic” in regard to the issues.
He said God expects a flat tithe which is perfectly proportional at 10 percent — applied to government, that would be a flat tax.
“Well some people say, ‘well that’s not fair,’ because it doesn’t hurt the guy who made 10 billion dollars,” Carson said, anticipating the counterargument. “Where does it say you have to hurt the guy? He just put $1 billion in the pot. We don’t hurt him…..”

That’s exactly what I said he’s all about common sense. His book is great btw.
He’s about common sense healthcare reform. One aspect he goes into in his book is tort reform, to stop frivolous medical lawsuits. he points out cost of medicine is high in part because doctors have to buy very expensive insurance to protect from frivolous lawsuits. That is to say they do something to save a person’s life and it’s the only option, but then that person, is ungrateful and sues them. He also talks about how doctors are more likely to go towards high paying jobs because they have to pay back incredibly expensive school debt, so he is also about education system reform, make it cost less to offer incentives for people to work in areas that they will be payed less. So there will be less doctor shortages in areas that need doctors. This he believes would also lower cost of medical care.

I would also like to hear his views on foreign policy and the events going on in the Middle East. What is his view of Israel and does he support Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. What I see so far is a man who is more of a Statesman than our current President. Would he consider running for President? He seems to have what it takes and he would be hands on; not run and hide like BO does when things get tuff and leave decision making for his cabinet in case things turn out bad like Benghazi.

I maybe wrong, but I believe what Dr. Carson was saying or implying, was that conservatism of today, or at least as it is projected by the Republican Party is not true conservatism, but has lost it’s bearing and is one of the main reasons we have lost the last two presidential elections. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish the present Republicans from the Democrats, and that failure to distinguish themselves from the Democrats is a major disaster. If it is not rectified soon, there will be another disaster in 2016.
Solution: the Old Guard has got to go. Don’t think a check up from the neck up will be sufficient.
They have been around Washington too many years, and they have drank the polluted waters all too often with the result that the Republicans think like the Democrats and neither of them have the interest of the American people at heart – talking about the real American people – those who work for a living and those who are truly working for a living, not the mindless robots on the public dole. If possible they need to be dragged kicking and screaming out of the prisons of the welfare system that into which they have permitted themselves to be enticed.
Dr. Benjamin Carson? A true American, a statesman and a friend.

Posters there are reacting to Dr. Carson’s statements probably because they have never heard this sensible alternative to current insurance, despite it being a Republican idea from years ago.
Of course their chosen “news” source would never explain the Medical Savings Account idea, as the MSM has failed to do also, so this “breath of fresh air” is really an old, but eminently logical proposal.
But, I forget, the Republicans have no alternatives to offer to Obamacare, right?
