Once You See the Video of a Skateboarder Setting Off a Speed Camera at 68 MPH You’ll Realize Why Cops Are Looking for Him
It’s not just the video showing South African skateboarder Decio Lourenco speeding downhill in and out of traffic on a busy road that has him in hot water with authorities. He apparently set off a speed camera in a 60 kilometers per hour zone (about 37 miles per hour) going 110 km/h (68 mph).
Lourenco could face arrest.

(Image: YouTube screenshot)
“We have handed over the matter to traffic officials and want him arrested,” JP Smith, a Cape Town safety and security official, told Reuters.
“The speed limit is irrelevant. He is seen careering down the road in a reckless and dangerous manner.”
The road Lourenco was zipping down is called Kloof Nek and is sometimes closed and used for extreme skateboarding events. The law in the city, according to Reuters, does not otherwise allow skateboarding on the road.

(Image: YouTube screenshot)
Here’s what the National Skate Collective, a nonprofit in South Africa that serves support skaters and skateboarding initiatives, said on Facebook “the city is trying to shut us down. They want to arrest one of our own, Decio!”
“What do you think we should do? Mass action? More meetings?” the post continued.
Watch Lourenco’s dangerous “Spoofing the Traffic Camera — Longboard Without Limits” stunt, which has garnered more than 500,000 views since being posted on YouTube Jan. 26:
The video bears the description that the skater is “a highly trained professional” and that the group “insists that no-one [attempt] to perform this stunt.”

Great to be young with rocks the size of softballs.
I am a FL flatlandder and went up north when I was young to visit family. I had my board and went out and found the biggest hill that I could.
Unfortunately I had not tightened my trucks and they were still loose from trick flat land skating. I got the speed wobbles at about 35 /40mph and then lost all control. My feet just could not keep up so I ended up taking out a young apple tree (about 1” around) in somebody’s front yard and ultimately ended up bouncing to a stop about 100 more feet past the tree.
That’s what happens when you let a FL boy near hills LOL

Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:44pmIts more than him what if everyone starts doing chase car videos of these downhill stunts? Thats whats the most dangerous of this video. IF a car follows every foolish thrill seeker down this road there is bound to be an accident involving the Car doing the filming. You see the headlights on the skaters legs and them in the whole video. Or maybe you just need a new flat screen to see it.

Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:38pmWe used to go skateboarding in San Francisco, and one night on the way home at around 3am we got out of the car and rode down a long hill on the freeway. The car followed us and paced us at 60mph. We had to lay down on the boards to prevent speed wobbles, but it was doable. I’d never heard of a longboard back then.

Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:56pmIt’s physics. A regular skate board as we grew up with cannot attain the speeds safely that the long board can. Even with the long board you could see the slight wobble that a regular skate board would create at much slower speeds.

Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:04pmWell I watched it twice as I really liked the sound track. But you can see that their are “headlights’ in the video. The video was therefore captured by a chase car which was prolly also what tripped the speed radar. People are invisible to radar as they dont reflect the beam.
Mega balls anyway. Enjoy wingsuit vidos too.

Posted on February 8, 2013 at 1:03pmSo, a moron on a skateboard going 69 mpg in a 37 zone doesn’t concern any of you people? He doesn’t have any real way of controlling that thing – no brakes, no way to turn quickly. I suppose if he was on your road zipping past you in traffic, you wouldn’t think something should be done? If your kids were trying to cross the road and this moron ran into them, do you think the damage wouldn’t be so bad, since it’s just a board with some wheels and a flying sack of meat weighing well over 100lbs slamming into them at 68 mph?
I think you are right, the cops are over-reacting. He didn’t hit anybody. So what if he scared some people? Even if he hits a car at that speed, what kind of damage can his body Really do?

In fact, there’s a whole sub-genre of longboarding called “sliding” that focuses on slowing down in style. I reccommend checking out some downhill longboarding and sliding videos on you tube – it’s really cool stuff (and really not as dangerous as it looks).
