Once You See the Video of a Skateboarder Setting Off a Speed Camera at 68 MPH You’ll Realize Why Cops Are Looking for Him

It’s not just the video showing South African skateboarder Decio Lourenco speeding downhill in and out of traffic on a busy road that has him in hot water with authorities. He apparently set off a speed camera in a 60 kilometers per hour zone (about 37 miles per hour) going 110 km/h (68 mph).

Lourenco could face arrest.

“We have handed over the matter to traffic officials and want him arrested,” JP Smith, a Cape Town safety and security official, told Reuters.

“The speed limit is irrelevant. He is seen careering down the road in a reckless and dangerous manner.”

The road Lourenco was zipping down is called Kloof Nek and is sometimes closed and used for extreme skateboarding events. The law in the city, according to Reuters, does not otherwise allow skateboarding on the road.

Here’s what the National Skate Collective, a nonprofit in South Africa that serves support skaters and skateboarding initiatives, said on Facebook “the city is trying to shut us down. They want to arrest one of our own, Decio!”

“What do you think we should do? Mass action? More meetings?” the post continued.

Watch Lourenco’s dangerous “Spoofing the Traffic Camera — Longboard Without Limits” stunt, which has garnered more than 500,000 views since being posted on YouTube Jan. 26:

The video bears the description that the skater is “a highly trained professional” and that the group “insists that no-one [attempt] to perform this stunt.”

The rush and exhilaration are very real!

I’ve hit 61mph on mine and routinely hit mid 50s on the hills in my neighborhood, clocking myself with my GPS.

I own 11 different longboards for different purposes, all built by me. Speed, cruising, carving, etc.

I’ve left patches of skin all over the streets since I began skating in 1978. I’ve tumbled down streets and into front yards. Two years ago I pushed my separated scapula through the top of my shoulder skin while suffering a grade 5 AC separation, resulting in five hours of reconstructive surgery requiring tissue donations (hamstring tendons to replace my ligaments) and removal of 1/2″ of bone from the end of my collarbone.

The rush and pull is so strong that I got back on board six months ago; much to the cries from my friends and family, but I’m in my mid-40s and a grown-up…

    … right?

I really doubt he set off that traffic camera, It was the car following him to film him that set it off. At any rate…he’s a douche 20 nothing who thinks he can do what ever he wants, whenever he wants because he is so damn special.

Throw his A$$ in jail and flush the key.

So, the racists want to cite the skateboarder for speeding and not the driver of the camera car?

Clearly the only real problem here is that progressive leftists are upset someone is having fun without paying a tax on it.

He was not “careering down the road in a reckless and dangerous manner”, he was staying in his lane, demonstrating good control. I would be more concerned with giving the car filming him a ticket, but nobody needs to be arrested over this.

The song was interesting too. I’ll have to check out that band.

Other than the Plastics in the wheels and the board, looks like pretty green transportation to me.
Looks a lot safer than some of the cars coming this way too.

Cool …. but who pays for his medical expenses and those of others if he goes flying across the road or someone in one of those parked car mistakenly opens a car door at the wrong moment or if some other unexpected thing occurs … He is obviously very talented … and he’s not using and gas or adding to the carbon footprint … but he’s taking needless huge risks at a potential risk to himself and others for what … a great thrill for himself … rather selfish. But no harm, no foul, so leave him alone but if you find him, tell him if it happens again there will be a price to be paid.

Now, if he’d been on a bicycle the city would’ve built him his very own lane.

Awesome! Ii wish we had long stretches of smooth pavement like that here in W.Pa. Nothing but pot holes and rotten pavement for the taxpayers here.

They want to arrest this kid? C’mon… he was just having some fun and didn’t hurt anyone or their property. Lighten up!

Is there a term stronger than crazy….? Maybe it is time to revamp the plot for those death race movies, call them downhill deathboard. I don’t know how you would survive a fall without a VERY long hospital stay. To me that’s not guts that’s just plum crazy….and “one step beyooooond”….remember that show? He would be the star for sure!

We were street-lugein’ on steel-wheeled boards in the late 60′s – early 70′s on our bellies. Man alive, I MISS those days!

Pretty cool, we used to do the same 20 years ago on roller blades. Find a big hill or a parking garage and let it rip. This difference was we did it at night when no one was around. You could hit 50-60mph pretty easily on most hills, 70-80 if you used a car to get going. If you fell, you only fell the few feet to the ground so no ever got hurt other than a little road rash. Something solid in your way would be a different story, but hey you’re invulnerable in your teens/twenties right? A few of us got speeding tickets, it was well worth the look on cop’s face and the points didn’t hit your license anyway so who cared.

No, somehow I think basket balls there would be 20 feet in the air for 100 ft. or better. Can’t keep a good man down. Hope he lives to feel the arthritis in the broken bones.
