Once You See the Video of a Skateboarder Setting Off a Speed Camera at 68 MPH You’ll Realize Why Cops Are Looking for Him

It’s not just the video showing South African skateboarder Decio Lourenco speeding downhill in and out of traffic on a busy road that has him in hot water with authorities. He apparently set off a speed camera in a 60 kilometers per hour zone (about 37 miles per hour) going 110 km/h (68 mph).

Lourenco could face arrest.

“We have handed over the matter to traffic officials and want him arrested,” JP Smith, a Cape Town safety and security official, told Reuters.

“The speed limit is irrelevant. He is seen careering down the road in a reckless and dangerous manner.”

The road Lourenco was zipping down is called Kloof Nek and is sometimes closed and used for extreme skateboarding events. The law in the city, according to Reuters, does not otherwise allow skateboarding on the road.

Here’s what the National Skate Collective, a nonprofit in South Africa that serves support skaters and skateboarding initiatives, said on Facebook “the city is trying to shut us down. They want to arrest one of our own, Decio!”

“What do you think we should do? Mass action? More meetings?” the post continued.

Watch Lourenco’s dangerous “Spoofing the Traffic Camera — Longboard Without Limits” stunt, which has garnered more than 500,000 views since being posted on YouTube Jan. 26:

The video bears the description that the skater is “a highly trained professional” and that the group “insists that no-one [attempt] to perform this stunt.”

These same a-holes who hate him for doing this awful, dangerous thing would have no problem drafting him into war to risk being dismembered, ventilated, or blown to bits.

I love people who live. I despise people who try to stop them.

    Nice ride.

This story starts of by saying that he is speeding in and out of traffic. Can someone please show me where in this video he is weaving in and out of traffic? Yes he is speeding and excessively at that, but he never passes a single car. He slows as soon as he approaches traffic, and when he does he does so safely.

I hope this was just relayed as is by The Blaze not written by them, because the line is very in accurate. Yes what he did was dangerous to others on the road (personally do not care if he chooses to risk his own life), and even if he is highly skilled unacceptable, but that is not an excuse for misleading reporting.

I hear long boards are on the Feinstein weapons ban list. “If we can save one person…”

It’s true, It does take a lot of disciplined riding to get to where you can handle the speeds you reach on downhill rides even with tight trucks. Looks like a lot of fun. The music set to the video was waaayyy cool, too!

I have lived in Michigan all my life, and I have never seen a road that smooth.
All our roads are built by the lowest UNION bidder.
WE are living in a 3rd world nation.

Are we sure it wasn’t the CAR FOLLOWING HIM that set off the speed camera?

Maybe 68 on a snowboard, but I would never do that on a skateboard. Thats asking for some major road rash. I would be wearing more than shorts. Dude has got balls the size of grapefruits.

Not the smartest thing to do. Glad he didn’t get hurt or hurt anyone else. It looks like a stupid kid trick to me. Maybe they should put license plates on these to raise revenue? I don’t find this any worst than an obnoxious bike rider.

Meanwhile, there are websites devoted to help with avoiding the ever present car-jacking/rape/murder; rampant in South Africa. Maybe their priorities are a bit “off”?

Didn’t do much skateboarding back in the day. Houston is flat as a table top. The only hills are the overpasses on the freeways. I used to get a friend who had a Cushman motorscooter give me a tow on my J. C. Higgins bicyle until my teeth started shaking. It was fun when I was 15 or 16, Doubt that it would be as much fun today.

It would be so fun to travel like this during the summer.

Of course, it would be fun until you squashed yourself like a bug into the front of someone’s windshield, or ran a red light. Did you guys see the scratches this guy made on the road whenever he tried to stop?

I would do this if there were no cars on the road. I would have the time of my life, WOOH!

Well, I’d have the time of my life until I was killed, anyways.

Amazing run! I didn’t see him weaving in and out of traffic. I saw him in complete control of the board at all times including the maneuvers to cut speed in preparation for the turn. I have experienced my own share of road rash, albeit on a motorcycle, not a skateboard (which I could not master in a few tries), this guy has great athletic skill. Cite him for exceeding the speed limit and nothing else as I saw no endangerment to drivers or pedestrians.

Liked the song and loved the kid, I watched this video twice.. I agree with others that said he had really good control of the road. I have a son that loved to do stuff like that..he’s older now (thank God) I personally don’t think this kid’s hurting anyone, he seemed to be paying more attention then many drivers. Now that being said, not sure if I would want to be driving on that road as I think he might make me a bit nervous– I don’t even like driving near bikes (mostly because I am not sure what they will do next and it is hard to look and text at the same time). Just kidding, I DO NOT text while driving..though their are many that do…this kid wasn’t.
