Parents of students at a high school in Tennessee are speaking out against a survey students took without parents being told that involved questions asking if their families owned guns, among other potentially controversial topics.
ABC 24 reported that Arlington High School allowed students to take a survey that included questions about guns, abortion and religion, which some parents feel should not have been administered, at least not without their knowledge.
Here’s some of the perspective from parents and students regarding the survey:
April Heath used Facebook as her sounding board after she says her daughter was given the questionnaire at school. In her post, she says her daughter was asked her if her parents owned guns; it also asked for the student’s opinion on the legalization of marijuana, abortion and what her religion is.
Student Phillip Beasley said, “It’s not that big of a deal, it’s just you don’t need to get into other people’s business that’s not yours, you know?”
“To tell you the truth I can’t think of any good reason to do that,” added grandparent Sharon Starlings. “It doesn’t seem right.”
Parents in Arlington say the questionnaire was out of line.
“I would be not OK with that,” said parent Martina Ashmore.
In a statement, Shelby County Schools said the survey was driven by the AP psychology class students and teacher-approved for a project teaching them about the scientific method. Here’s more from the statement:
Topics reflect current issues that students are seeing and reading about in the news, as well as the related laws and policies that address them. To support their research, students were permitted to conduct the surveys in several classes. The surveys were permitted only under the condition that they are completely anonymous and optional, and students were informed prior to the survey being handed out that it was completely anonymous and optional. Teachers of multiple subjects seek opportunities to incorporate current issues in their curriculum, including those included in this survey. Teachers and administrators at Arlington High School supported this research project because they believe the best way to effectively educate students about the issues that concern them is allowing them to be engaged participants in conversations about them.

Feb. 9, 2013 at 2:12pmTell you what: Let’s do a different survey. Ask gun owners if their kids can do age-appropriate math at a competent level. Maybe we can campare the failure rate of students to the percentage of legal gun owners involved in gun crime. Perhaps we can give back one seized gun per every student who drops out.

Feb. 8, 2013 at 5:48pmBefore being allowed to ask questions like this, teachers, administrators, doctors, hospitals, etc. should first complete a “questionaire” detailing their church and religious affiliations, civic, cultural and political associations and groups, and whether they have any intention of voicing opinions on any issues facing them or the nation as a whole and if they have submitted those opinions to the government and obtained a permit before being allowed to speak. I seriously doubt these people will enjoy having their First Amendment rights onfringed and it might make them think before attempting to infringe on others rights under the other 9 amendments in the Bill of Rights!!!

Feb. 8, 2013 at 9:40pmSimple solution is to teach your kids that questions like this from schools or school officials are not OK, even if they do use some kind of “class” to cover why they are being asked. Frankly, I think my kids would have answered the questions was a very polite” Sorry, but that is none of your business.” Then if they were punished for not answering, well then the folks in the school administration that already hate to see me coming would have one more reason to justify that feeling.
Kids need to be taught that these questions are only one step above a “bad touch” and should be reported to parents ASAP.

Back when I was in school, they would give us surveys to do, telling us that they were important, and we had to answer them honestly.
Most people did not read them, but quite a few stated in the instructions that they were not mandatory.
Others, we were told were mandatory, and it later came out that they were not, with no prior notification.

Feb. 8, 2013 at 5:32pmIt’s an advanced placement Psychology class studying the scientific method. What don’t these people get? The high school students in AP classes are, virtually without exception, the most sophisticated intellects in the student body. They are trying to challenge these kids with advanced sociological methodologies so that they can qualify for college credit and avanced placement in their fields of study. Do you expect them to collect sociological data on fruit-buying tendencies in their homes or bathroom usage trends? These kids are not in the fifth grade and most of them I suspect are more intellectually mature than the parents complaining about the survey. What’s so sensitive about public opinion on relevant social issues? Are these parents ashamed of something? Perhaps their afraid to learn that their well-educated children don’t cling to the same reactionary world view that their parents do. It’s why conservative parents burn thoughtful books and brand teachers as ‘the intellectual elite’ isn’t it, afraid that the brighest of their kids will become educated enough to potentially disagree with their parent’s antiquated world view.

I am the parent of twins that are both in the AP program and have been in the gifted and talented program at their school since entering the second grade. I agree that they, and others like them are some of the brightest minds in society today. Having said that I call B.S. to virtually everything else that you have said. If this is an exercise to teach them the scientific methodology behind surveys, then why not choose more innocuous subject matter like toileting habits as you suggested? One of the problems is that through conflicts of interests and lack of fiduciary responsibilities many educational body’s have lost the public trust. Teachers unions do not ensure a good education, they serve as a political voting block and ensure that sub-standard teachers remain employed. This is but one example. As a result of the political relationship of most teachers unions, teachers, administrators, and board of education members Constitutionally protected rights should remain private. Whether or not their parents own firearms, the child believes in a “right to choose” or a “right to life,” or even whether or no marijuana should remain illegal have no bearing on the effectiveness of teaching scientific methodology, but they could have a huge bearing on society if this information were to be used in a non-judicious manner.
For the record, I collect books not burn them, and t’s been my experience that few teachers are intellectual at all not to mention “elite.” Tr

Feb. 8, 2013 at 7:18pmI don’t believe in censorship, that is the specialty of liberals dictating to us what we should or should not be exposed to. High school AP courses are awful. The high schools have nine months, five days a week to prepare the student to pass a 3 credit hour college course (that is a 3 hour per week for four months college class) and most students fail the end of course AP exam. They don’t get any college credit. It is a joke how ineffective the high schools are at teaching these courses. If they wanted a survey for the scientific method, why not ask questions about preferring taco bell over burger king? I think we all know this was not an innocent survey.

Feb. 8, 2013 at 8:27pmRegardless of its purpose I find it inappropriate for anyone outside the family to question any minor child about the personal security of their home. Most responsible gun owners should teach this lesson to their children. However I suspect many non gun owners would be concerned about their children being questioned on the subject, which is probably something they never gave much thought to before.
An advanced placement course or not, even as supposedly anonymous, I’m pretty sure you’d find at least one student in that class or maybe even a teacher you wouldn’t be totally comfortable having a pathway to discovering that information about your family.
The subject of an individual family’s personal security has no place in a classroom regardless of the purpose. That’s not paranoia that’s just common sense.

Feb. 8, 2013 at 6:26pmHi MONK, Hardly anybody but family and well known friends bother to come that far up my drive. If they did, they might be able to see the bumper stickers on our vehicles. Then, there is the sign that warns not to be as worried about the dog as much as the armed home owner.

Feb. 9, 2013 at 9:23pmMarine25, I’m being to doubt you have ever been a Marine. I also am convinced that you have no idea about being an American. No school has the right to ask children or teen in any school one question about their homes, their parents, or what Mom or Dad own no matter how you spin it.
Do you work for the lamestream media by any chance? MSNBC would love to have you!
