The Day’s Cute Kid Viral Video Will Have You Gushing: 3-Year-Old Caught Red-Faced in the Sprinkle Jar (But Wait Until You Hear His Denials)

It has been quite the week for cute viral videos. There’s been the little girl gushing over her first train ride and the baby that wakes up instantly and dances in her car seat when her favorite song comes on, just to name a couple. And now, meet little John.

John’s mom caught him this week raiding the sprinkle container. How did she know? the evidence was written all over his face:

Child Caught Stealing Sprinkles but Denies It in Cute Viral Video

But 3-year-old little John was adamant when confronted that he “did not” get into the sprinkles. And he denies it several different ways, and using “grown-up” language that will melt your heart.

Watch the dialogue between John and his mom:

Now before you go thinking that the video only glorifies lying and is teaching little Johnny bad habits, read what his mom wrote on the video about teaching him a lesson:

After I filmed it we had a VERY long talk about the difference between telling the truth and not telling the truth. He has an amazing imagination and loves to tell us stories. I saw this as a sweet moment, something that every child goes through…where they try to push the boundaries to see how far they can go. And I thought I’d share it with my friends and family. And apparently, the world seems to enjoy it, too. We are currently working on the difference, and he is doing really well. :)

Side note: My son does NOT have a filling or a cavaty. He was eating breakfast at the time of Sprinklegate, and that is just some of his breakfast cereal in his food. It is a low quality video, and it just showed up in a funky color. But he does NOT eat sweets all the time (ah! Hence the binge!), and his teeth are healthy and beautiful.

Now watch it again — because we know you want to.

Cute??!!! Are you kidding? Liars at any age aren’t cute.
Note: When he opened his mouth, I saw that this is probably not the only “treat” that he has imbibed in. He has a cavity beginning in a lower tooth. Take away the sprinkles out of the house and all the rest of the garbage. However, since I am not Mrs. obama, I guess I will not tell others what they can and can’t eat.

This is an adorable child. Please don’t politicize it.
BUT, let me point out that a shame based approach at an early age only teaches avoidance, and how to lie better. More than anything in the world that child wants to please his mom AND stay out of trouble. (See him backing up holding his bottom? He knows what’s coming! I’m NOT opposed to spanking, but in this instance there’s a better approach IMHO.)
If we first teach the VALUE of the truth, lying will become less desirable. (Ask for the truth and praise the giving of the truth from young children. THEN, gently explain why he shouldn’t do whatever it is he did.) Over time this builds trust between the parent and child, fosters a desire to do the right thing AND helps the child learn to make good decisions even when mom isn’t around. (Isn’t that the eventual goal? Good decisions even when we’re NOT around?)

A perfect example that children will lie as soon as they learn to talk. This is why they need moral guidance, and I agree with GURUMEDITATION. Yes, we are born with original sin.

Shawn’s (child) public spokesperson clarified the matter in the daily briefing ….

“Shawn’s statements were moral, ethical and legal.”

The spokesperson went on to comment:

“At this point … What does it matter if Shawn ate the sprinkles?”
