Rep. Elijah Cummings Says Nixing Saturday Mail Delivery Will Hurt Minorities, Women

After the United States Postal Service announced that it intends to stop delivering mail on Saturdays in an effort to cut costs beginning this August, many praised it as a relatively straightforward way to save roughly $2 billion a year.

Some lamented the inconvenience of the change and others were alarmed at what that means for post office employees. Not many, though, tied the matter to race or gender.

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) was apparently one of them.

He explained on MSNBC:

“You’re talking about just this reduction … from six days to five days, will cut anywhere from 25,000 to 30,000 employees.Β  And with regard to Asian, African-Americans, and Hispanics, they comprise about 40 percent of the Postal Service employees.Β  So it’s logical to believe if they were to lose that 30,000 jobs, easily 40 percent of them would be African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asian-Americans.”

According to The Hill, Cummings proceeded to point out that over 40 percent of the post office’s employees are also women:

“So you have a lot of women, many of whom are single women β€” head of household, and they depend upon that decent wage, decent working conditions and benefits to take care of their families.”

But Cummings’ bottom line is that stopping Saturday mail delivery is harmful for the nation at large.

“So, yes, it would have a devastating effect in an economy that is already very, very fragile,” he concluded.

The Post Office recorded a net loss of $15.9 billion for 2012, according to the Washington Post.Β  That’s three times the loss recorded a year earlier.

      This race card crap is way past the point of ludicrous. Anytime the government makes any attempt to curb the overspending some dolt throws out the race card. Get over it fool, these people need to do what the vast majority of others do when this happens regardless of race, get another job.

      Myself & the wife were talking the other day and have decided that Obama has even split the country down the middle. We’ve discussed Americans as – Us rather than we & them. The other day I caught myself a s saying them! The only problem I see is the poor having to wait until Monday for the welfare and food stamp checks. It’s time to go to direct deposit. to save billions.

      What kind of racist crap is that. This man doesn’t belong anywhere near a Gov.position. He’s worried about 40% of the layoff being a minority but could care less about the 60% of the lay offs that would be whites. Not even considering that all the aly offs would be AMERICAN.

      I agree 100% … Especially as I sit in my gender class at school and hear non-stop how I am the privileged gender and race ..I am tired of it , I can’t go about acting as any other gender or race, calling victim as the excuse for my actions. I have to toe the line as a result of being a white male, from birth, having pulled the burden that I must work, that I must also carry my family, that I must act in a manor that is conducive to this the integrity and moral code I prescribe too. … Sorry, I don’t mean to sound like I am some kind of “hater” or something, I am just tired of hearing that this world isn’t fair to anybody else but white males, when there is no benefits, or special programs for a me,scholarships for me, and so on I feel society has leveled the playing the field, if not having over compensated…

      Maybe the Post office should stop hiring so many minorities, then the proper business decisions it makes would not affect them so much. His 40% number is probably off quite a bit depending on the area you live, most of the Postal workers are minorities. Blacks make up 13% of the population so it seems they are over represented in the Postal service.

    There are a few reasons the USPS is doing poorly….

    One is the huge bonuses management gets and their lavish spending on their offices.

    Another is that Congress pasted a Bill in Dec 2006 that mandated the USPS completely cover (come up with) the all the money for its pension plan in 10 years.

    The federal government is losing money at a collossal rate. This won’t help much, but it will help.

    It seems to me that all western governments should start making cuts wherever they can. Any starting place is a good place.

    This playing of the race card by spoiled, coddled, leeches at the first sign that the general free ride might be coming to an end is getting really old and worn out…

      Under FMLA all fathers are allowed to take time off for their childs birth. Depending on how an individuals company allows them to accrue leave it could very well be paid.

    Currently I am a federal employee with the high probability of having my job cut due to budget cuts. I guess my job doesn’t matter though because I am a white male. If I do lose my job I will grab my ol’ boot straps and pull myself back up, move out of California, and get a new job else where. Texas sounds pretty good right about now.

    They lose their jobs – so what? I lost my job going on three years ago, live in a small rural community, can’t afford to drive 50 miles one way to work in the city. They can share in some of the obama policy blowback like the rest of us. I say all that voted for obama should get the pink slips first so they can reap what they sowed.

    The Post Office isn’t going to deliver mail on Saturdays. So there are 25,000 to 30,000 Asian, African-American and Hispanic postal employees who only work on Saturday and they’re going to lose their jobs. Really?

      The truth is that there are a HUGE number of PT people at the USPS who ONLY work weekends so the USPS doesn’t have to pay O/T. Killing Saturday delivery would kill many of those jobs.

      He went on to say women were 40 % of the work force. So either white & white hispanic males are 60% or 20%.
      Since blacks are 13% of the population ,that is a serious over representation of the work force.
      But then again the government veterans ,court and prison employees are 50-70% minorities .

      Pure racism .

      Exactly right. That was my first thought as well. As for the average white male being “privileged”, how can that be when he is the one group that has no entitlements whatsoever? If the average white guy hits a rough patch, he is mostly on his own and is last in line for anything….even a job in many cases.

      As much as I hate weigh in on this, I doubt that 60%b of Postal Employees are white, and here’s why.

      Years ago I went and took the P.O. test, twice over 3 – 4 years in fact. There were about 200 people taking the test both times. It was easily 65% African-American females, 20% A-A males, and the rest of the people sprinkled around were White, Spanish, Asian, and in that room of 200 people there were [and I counted them] 4 white men.

      Now I’m no mathematician, but any child with a pencil and paper can see there are not going to be 60% of the work force being white, given who takes that test. I’d bet you in large cities the numbers are just as weighted toward minorities getting hired by USPS. Having said that, WHEN did the Postal Service become a ‘jobs plan’ for the country? It’s not the WPA, or CCC, it’s job is to get the mail from point “A” to point “B”.

      And just what P.O have you been in where 60% of the employees are WHITE? Personally I don’t care what color the mailman, mail woman or mail’person’ is, but I do object to this kind of racially based lying. And truthfully, our problem in America isn’t (D)’s or (R)’s, it’s the people from BOTH sides of the aisle who refuse to throw the BS Flag on stuff like this and who refuse to point out the racially biased remarks of people like this for what they are.

      @ Schtevio He said (his numbers, not mine) 40% were asian, hispanic, and black minorities. 100% (USPS employees) minus 40% (minorities) equals 60% (all other races). I’m sure there is a small percentage of middle east and native american among others, but according to him, 40% are of the race HE stated. To break that down even more for you, that would mean roughly 13.3% are black, 13.3% are hispanic and 13.3% are asian. I’m sure you feel everybody is a racist if they don’t agree with you. Grow up.

    How about we do away w/all but truly rural delivery. The Post Office provides at no charge boxes for all street addresses.

    That would save a ton of money over time!

      In our small rural community, I live 1/4 mile from the Post Offfice so my P.O. Box is free. But if our small post office is closed we would have to get our mail by rural carrier, which costs the post office more money.
