Chicago Police Superintendent: ‘Stop Adopting the Rhetoric Of Gun Advocates — Chicago Does Not Have Strict Gun Laws’

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy: Chicago Does Not Have Strict Gun Laws

CHICAGO, IL – FEBRUARY 11: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (R) listens as Police Superintendant Garry McCarthy (L) speaks during a press conference which they called to promote a plan to increase mandatory minimum sentencing for serious gun crimes in an effort to combat the city’s growing gun violence problem on February 11, 2013 in Chicago, Illinois. President Barack Obama is expected to speak about the city’s growing gun violence problem during a visit to Chicago on Friday. Last year the city had more than 500 murders. Credit: Getty Images

Despite having some of the toughest gun laws in the nation, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says the Windy City “does not have strict gun laws.”

“One of the things that I would like to again try to clear up, and I ask you to please stop adopting the rhetoric of the gun advocates,” McCarthy said, addressing the press.

Unsurprisingly, no one is buying it. The Washington Times reports:

Despite the superintendent’s claims, Chicago has some of the strictest gun-control mandates in the country. “Assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines are completely banned and, until a 2010 Supreme Court decision, so were handguns.

Residents now can get a permit to own a gun, but the process requires training, background checks and a firearm owner’s identification card.

“We’re here today to talk about the fact that we need mandatory minimum sentences in the state of Illinois,” he said, accompanied by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. He says that increasing punishments will help prevent guns from coming into the Chicago from various outside areas.

I would rather die of a gun shot wound trying to defend myself with a gun, then die of a gunshot wound without access to a weapon.

I have gotten to the point where I will go through the hassle of declaring a weapon so I can transport it in checked luggage when I fly commercial, which is every freaking week….but even then, I gotta check to see if the state I am traveling to will recognize my C&C.

Get a CCW from a few other states as well. May I suggest Utah, Florida, and Virginia? Reciprocity will mean a much easier time for you in your travels.

Also, if you have an iPhone, it’s worth looking at downloading “Legal Heat”, and app which keeps current states laws regulating firearms.

FYI the “Legal Heat” rating for the State of Illinois is a gravestone, signifying that compared to other States, Illinois has killed 2nd Amendment freedoms.

Like most liberally run cities and states have two types of gun laws. One for law abiding citizens- you can’t have one and we’ll severely punish you if you do, and one for criminals- well boys will be boys. It’s much easier, and safer to abuse law abiding citizens than criminals. After all you don’t want to make a criminal mad, he might hurt you

Politicians are amazing, so lets see, murder is against the law in Il, so Supt McCarty, can you tell us how making other gun related crimes carry a mandatory minimum will reduce gun crimes when the punishment for murder does not? BTW, IL abolished the death penalty a few years ago and right after that murder in Chicago soared. Coincidence? I thin it is. However, having the death penalty as an option may allow for more murders being solved and taking those bad guys off the streets may actually REDUCE crime (you hear that Rham?) making guns you dont like illegal wont reduce crime as criminals are called criminals for a good reason because they break the law. Duh. Man most of these guys went to Ivy League schools. what are they teaching there?

@Keatonc333 You’re a moron. Chicago just lost a lawsuit wherein the Supreme Court stated that the city’s ban on handguns was unconstitutional. It further stated that Chicago residents had a right to own and use a handgun, a right which the city, not only prohibited, but punished those who exercised it. Go back to your cave, you’re opinions are worth nothing in the real world.

“In another dramatic victory for firearm owners, the Supreme Court has ruled unconstitutional Chicago, Illinois’, 28-year-old strict ban on handgun ownership, a potentially far-reaching case over the ability of state and local governments to enforce limits on weapons.

A 5-4 conservative majority of justices on Monday reiterated its 2-year-old conclusion that the Constitution gives individuals equal or greater power than states on the issue of possession of certain firearms for self-protection.

“It cannot be doubted that the right to bear arms was regarded as a substantive guarantee, not a prohibition that could be ignored so long as states legislated in an evenhanded manner,” wrote Justice Samuel Alito.” http://articles.cnn.com/2010-06-28/justice/us.scotus.handgun.ban_1_justices-two-years-gun-control-justices-john-paul-stevens?_s=PM:CRIME

Well Garry if you have one ‘gun law’ it’s too many and unconstitutional but not to worry this country hasn’t followed the constitution in over a century and it’s statists like yourself that makes things worse.

“Assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines are completely banned and, until a 2010 Supreme Court decision, so were handguns.

Residents now can get a permit to own a gun, but the process requires training, background checks and a firearm owner’s identification card.

Training a permit and ID card are infringements on our second amendment right to bear arms and I challenge anyone to prove otherwise. Just because constitutionally illiterate congresses have over stepped their authority and created ‘gun laws’ doesn’t mean they’re constitutional, none of them are.

These guys all live by the model that if you tell a lie often enough, it eventually becomes truth. It amazes me how they can just blatantly lie and not be challenged. But with the media in the bag and not doing their job, what do you expect? This tactic is used all the way up to the President and they don’t even stutter. They have an agenda and that is full blown gun control. That will make the sheep much easier to slaughter when they open up the welcoming doors to the UN to come in, take over, and expand their “New World Order”. BTW, for those of you that consider yourself a Republican and want to defend George H.W. Bush, you should know that his Daddy was a banker that helped fund Hitler’s rise to power. Hitler’s rise was one of the banking cartel’s attempts at forming the New World Order. When Hitler decided to mint his own currency and told the bankers to take a hike, they turned on him. I wonder what the Fed and the rest of the banking cartel will do to the US and its citizens once they have decimated our currency.

Neither Emmanuel or McCarthy will look into the fact that many economists have told them when the public is armed there is less crime…Read John Lott’s book “More Guns Less Crime.” Gun bans increase crime. Chicago’s murder rate rose after the 7th Circuit US court of Appeals upheld its ban on new handguns in 1982. Over the 19 years following the ban, there were only 3 years when the murder rate was as low as it was in 1982. As shown in Lott’s third edition of More Guns Less Crime, before the ban, Chicago’s murder rate was falling relative to the nine other largest cities, but after the ban Chicago’s rate rose relative to other cities. Illinois is the only state not to have conceal carry, and that is pretty Draconian. McCarthy has broken up the police force’s gang units and moved officers around the city. This is a mistake as it takes years for them to get to know who the good and bad guys are on any given street….This includes the street where 7 year old Heaven Sutton was gunned down last June while she sold candy and snow cones with her mother and other family members. Stopping gang violence and making city streets safe again is a complex and difficult job. Bust neither Emmanuel or McCarthy will consider getting out of the way of residents constitutional freedoms, thereby letting the people be equal citizens on their own streets.

I honestly believe that the goal of Democrats/ Progressives is to create an unarmed populace with huge crime and drug problems so the people can always depend on government for protection. It is like the oppisite of the gangsters charging protection money, Which crooks do you want to be beholden to, the govt or the Al Capones. I think the goal is to prosecute the out of state/city sellers more than the actual criminals. They think the only problem is the fact that all the other cities and states are still allowed to sell firearems. With the help of “moderate conservativs” like Bill O’Reilly, the statists are going to push a federal registration program for all firearms in the name of safety. That opens the door for taxation, confiscation, and legal liability. They want to hold gun owners accountable for privately sold and stolen firearms. That way the criminals in Chicago are no longer the problem. It puts the liabilty on regualr citizens who choose to own firearms.
