Chicago Police Superintendent: ‘Stop Adopting the Rhetoric Of Gun Advocates — Chicago Does Not Have Strict Gun Laws’

CHICAGO, IL – FEBRUARY 11: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (R) listens as Police Superintendant Garry McCarthy (L) speaks during a press conference which they called to promote a plan to increase mandatory minimum sentencing for serious gun crimes in an effort to combat the city’s growing gun violence problem on February 11, 2013 in Chicago, Illinois. President Barack Obama is expected to speak about the city’s growing gun violence problem during a visit to Chicago on Friday. Last year the city had more than 500 murders. Credit: Getty Images
Despite having some of the toughest gun laws in the nation, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says the Windy City “does not have strict gun laws.”
“One of the things that I would like to again try to clear up, and I ask you to please stop adopting the rhetoric of the gun advocates,” McCarthy said, addressing the press.
Unsurprisingly, no one is buying it. The Washington Times reports:
Despite the superintendent’s claims, Chicago has some of the strictest gun-control mandates in the country. “Assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines are completely banned and, until a 2010 Supreme Court decision, so were handguns.
Residents now can get a permit to own a gun, but the process requires training, background checks and a firearm owner’s identification card.
“We’re here today to talk about the fact that we need mandatory minimum sentences in the state of Illinois,” he said, accompanied by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. He says that increasing punishments will help prevent guns from coming into the Chicago from various outside areas.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 12:56pmI was born and raised in Chicago.. moved out 8 years ago.. let me tell you a few things about Chicago.. Chicago is run by the DM (democratic machine).. they have NO gun laws UNLESS you are or try to be a law abiding citizen.. THAN there are laws.. GANG BANGERS and DRUG CARTEL are running the city and last summer RAHM gave them a million dollars in stimulus money to lay low.. it didn’t work ,, they needed MORE so UP went crime.. It’s like cities in MEXICO in some area’s..Qinn is letting prisoners out of jail.. Judges let gang bangers go on a regular basis.. and those that are suppose to keep those let out of jail on a short leash don’t even report when they go back to doing the same thing,, either the those running the city are SCARED and are failing to do their jobs or they are just inept., HOWEVER.. while they CAN’T get the guns from the bad guys they sure come down heavy on those just trying to protect themselves.. THIS is OBAMA’S LEGACY.. it’s his community organizing and buddies the keep Chicago a city where ILLEGALS are the only ones who really want to live there..

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 8:24amWow. This guy is either deluded or simply a complete moron. Let me clue you Mr. Copman…..Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the nation…..with D.C. as the possible exception. Both cities had a near total ban on ALL guns prior to the Supreme Court striking down their bans. Both cities have the highest gun related crime in the nation. How does that happen mr. chicagodude? Ban guns….gun crime goes up…..does not compute….danger will robinson….danger.
Open carry states……lowest crime rates. Concealed carry states….crime rates have dropped amazingly. It’s not rocket science people. What are the odds some punk ass thug is going to try to mug me seeing my .45 on my hip? …..exactly! Cowards prey on the weak and defenseless. An armed society is a polite society……

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 12:00amYou do have strict gun control laws, what you don’t have is control. You never will. Get rid of the bad people, the crime rate will drop, get rid of the drugs, the gangs, graft, corruption, and especially Rahm Emanuel, the crime rate will drop. Guns are not your problem it’s the people commuting the crimes.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:44pmIf Chicago DOESN’T have strict gun laws, then they MUST HAVE weak law enforcement against the criminal element that constantly misuses guns and abuses the 2nd Amendment, correct?
Pick one.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 10:01pmYou don’t get it — if a progressive-liberal says they don’t have strict gun control laws, that’s the gospel and anything contradicting that is a lie, including pointing out any laws and regulations that would support this lying notion. Always remember, if a progressive-liberal says something is so, then that’s the truth, even if it is a lie.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 8:59pmThe right to purchase arms that were legally sold in the past, and buy them in the future, shall not be infringed, that’s exactly what the 2nd Amendment says, and it is this nonsense about gun free zones that kills innocent people, while politicians and their followers worship, have sex with each other, popping out babies so they can murder them, then demand us to pay attention to their pleas for their control over our lives and attack our civil rights?
No. I neither understand your attempts at attacking civil rights, neither will I be silent while you do it, I will practice the freedom of assembly to electonically assemble our opinion to apply peer pressure that we do not believe in what you are doing, how you are doing it, why you are doing it, and once we articulate that it does not matter when or where you want to do it? It’s not allowed?

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 8:49pmHello,
Firstly thank you for what you do for the state and for the people who call Washington home. I am writing today to express my sincere wish that you as a state representative will oppose House Bill 1588 and
House Bill 1676.
Both of these bills are prefect examples of bad legislation proposed for the wrong reasons in a time that those proposing said legislation feel that they can get it passed. Please oppose these bills in their entirety and do not allow them or any bill along there lines to ever pass in this state.
It is already illegal to transfer a firearm to a criminal and Washington already has a reckless endangerment law on the books. Adding new laws, especially ones that punish people for doing non criminal things is absurdly insulting and burdensome to preservation of freedom. As a people, we are all reasonably able and willing to manage our own lives and make choices for our selves. We are not criminals and we should never allow legislation to pass that would make us criminals for non criminal activities such as giving a gift to ones own child, spouse, or loved one.
Knowingly transferring any firearm to a known criminal is already illegal so why add additional laws to our books that clearly target lawful citizens and not criminals? It makes no sense at all. Why should we let the criminal actions of one affect millions? Sadly it seems that so many others are willing and eager to sell out common sense by fighting so hard to criminalize l

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 8:43pmThese people all need mental evaluations immediately – they sound insane and beyond reality in any of it’s several levels. The Chicago cops have already gone door to door confiscating firearms of otherwise law abiding persons who have tried to comply with impossible regulations.
If they can do this to the second amendment how long before they can just say due to local restrictions, you may no longer have a lawyer, and go back to rubber hoses to elicit a confession. How long before they declare rape a right of criminals and elected officials.
