Comedienne Sarah Silverman’s Sister Detained by Israeli Authorities for Wearing Male Garb at the Western Wall

(TheBlaze/AP) — It seems American comedienne Sarah Silverman isn’t the only one in the family with a flair for the dramatic.  Israeli police detained 10 women on Monday, including her sister, as they tried to pray at a Jerusalem holy site.

Anat Hoffman, who was among those detained, said the women were stopped because they were wearing religious garb that Orthodox Judaism reserves for men only. The incident occurred at the Western Wall, one of Judaism’s holiest sites.

Silverman’s sister Susan is a Jerusalem rabbi from the liberal Reform stream of Judaism, and her teenage daughter was reportedly detained along with her.

Sarah Silverman wrote on her Facebook page that she was “SO proud” of her sister and niece for their “civil disobedience.” The original post included more explicit language typical of Silverman’s “humor.”

She wrote roughly the same message on Twitter (language warning):

The detained women belong to a liberal group called “Women of the Wall” that travels to the Western Wall each month to worship. They conduct certain rituals like wearing prayer shawls and skullcaps and singing out loud that strict Orthodox interpretations of Judaism reserve for men only. Hoffman, who was among those detained, is chairwoman of the group.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the women were detained because they acted against court-ordered regulations that bar women from wearing prayer shawls at the Western Wall so as not to offend Orthodox Jewish worshippers. Rosenfeld said the women were released after several hours.

The group has been gathering at the Western Wall for a quarter century, but in recent years its activists have been increasingly detained by police. But Hoffman said no woman detained has ever been formally charged with any crime.

“This is just attrition,” she said. “They want to the group to become frightened.”

The Monday detentions took place after about 300 people gathered at a prayer service at the Western Wall to protest Orthodox control of the site. Among the worshippers in the group, Hoffman said, were about 100 male supporters, including veterans from the legendary Israeli paratroopers’ battalion that captured Jerusalem’s ancient walled Old City, including the Western Wall, in the 1967 Middle East War.

In December, after Hoffman was arrested under similar circumstances, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the head of the semi-governmental Jewish Agency to come up with solutions that would allow for non-Orthodox women to pray freely at the site.

Hoffman said two of the women held by police were American rabbis from the egalitarian Conservative Jewish movement who, as a result of being detained, missed a scheduled meeting with the Jewish Agency chief to discuss the very issue that landed them in police custody.

Dumb stunt in a country that HAS a government sponsored religion and expects respect for those of that religion (While respecting other religions, as well, trolls).

What a foolish thing to take offense at… Wear what you want here. As a kid in Paris one of the high school girls on our tour group was refused admittance to Chartre because her top exposed her shoulders. She donned a scarf and we proceeded.

Anyone demanding others acquiesce to their expectations of dress and decorum outside their home country is asking for problems, and Sarah has no reason to be proud that her sister was flouting others’ culture and beliefs in such an outlandish way… If an Iranian jumped on stage to prevent her act because they DON’T allow freedom of speech, should she be proud of his action and agree to say only what his government wants?

Actually these women may not be that “Liberal” in a political sense. There are several divisions in Judaism, and many of them allow women to wear a tallit. My daughters were given a tallit at their Bat Mitzvah. Some women wear kapot as well. They wanted to pray wrapped in a symbol of prayer, what is wrong with that?

Typical liberal trash, whose only agenda is the destruction of society and traditional values. Regardless of “enlightened” thinking, women have since the beginning of Judaism have not been allowed to be rabbis. There are many reasons for this, and it has nothing to do with “equality”.

Those were Reform Jews who are very liberal. And while they are certainly free to do as they wish in their own communities this is a holy site recognized by all Jews. And while some Reform women choose to wear a Tallit, Orthodox Jews see it as obligatory. It violates no precept of Reform to not wear the Tallit while it does violate the traditions of Orthodoxy. Reform also opposes gender segregation so should we permit them to enter the men’s section or tear up the partition? These same women wouldn’t dare challenge Muslim traditions for fear of offending them. Yet Orthodox traditions are fair play?

I once visited Europe with a group and while there we visited an old Cathedral. Being Orthodox and feeling obligated to keep my head covered, I chose not to enter due to the requirement that I remove any head coverings out of respect. I didn’t complain or worse, actively violate the traditions of that place. These women should show the same respect.

I’m going to go out on a limb here & say this was not a mistake on their part by just so happening to wear an article of clothing that is offensive to surrounding religious sects. That was not America they were in and they failed to realize that other countries don’t “tolerate” like we do in the United States. It was a stupid move on their part & probably some kind of desperate attempt to increase the relevancy of their Left leaning little group. Could they do this in the United States…yes. Israel…no. Even here it still would have been offensive but we have freedom of expression & speech here protected under our Constitution (if it still means anything at this point).

If you had read the story more carefully you would have seen that they weren’t all reform Jews, two of them were Conservative. Taken together the Reform and Conservative branches of Judaism account for the vast majority of Jews in the United States and the United States has almost half of the Jews in the world. Both sects have been ordaining female rabbis for years. Chances are, if you have never asked your Jewish friends what branch they are, they are either Reform or Conservative. I don’t blame them for being annoyed that the authorities in Jerusalem are denying the legitimacy of the faith of millions of their fellow Jews and thwarting their desire to worship at the holy places of their faith.

I am fully aware of what the Reform and Conservative movements are, what they represent, and the behavior of their members. The simple truth is that many Jews who call themselves Conservative do so because they attend services at a Conservative synagogue, not because they observe the laws of Judaism as the Conservative Movement would proscribe. Conservative Judaism, on paper, differs from modern Orthodoxy only on the matters of egalitarianism, and a few minor legal differences. Many so-called Conservative Jews will drive on the Sabbath even though Conservative Judaism only allows driving as a concession to those for whom walking is impractical or extremely inconvenient and even then it should be limited to getting to and from services. Many Conservative Jews, in terms of practice, would actual be far closer to Reform.

I was born into a non-Orthodox household so trust me I know the differences. Don’t pretend to know more about Judaism and its many forms as I do.

If you were born into a non-Orthodox Jewish household then you know that the Orthodox religious authorities who dictate so much of the public policy in Israel regard you as a JINO, basically apostate, and you should have a little more sympathy for these women who have the guts to speak up and say, “No, we are as much Jews as you are. Incorrect yet again. Israel recognizes anyone as Jewish who can prove that they were born to a Jewish woman. Specifically, all I’d have to prove would be that my great-grandmother of my matriline was Jewish, a rather simple task. What they don’t recognize are non-Orthodox conversions and “Jews” whose only Jewish ancestry is on their father’s side. Even the Conservative movement in Judaism uses these factors for determining if one is Jewish or not.

For example, the actor Kirk Douglas is considered to be Jewish but his son Michael Douglas is not.

Wait, how does that make me wrong? If they refuse to recognize non-Orthodox conversions, that it is tantamount to declaring that you are not Jewish in any religious sense of the word. You may be “Jews,” but your rabbis aren’t rabbis. If they were they would be able to perform conversions. The attitude of these old Orthodox Israeli creeps is exactly as I stated – you are an apostate JINO.

While I don’t think this is a crime in any way, this level of disrespect is unacceptable. If you say this is acceptable behavior the next step will be these women wanting to pray in the men’s section. There is a huge plaza behind the Orthodox section where they could do their service but they choose to walk in to where they know Orthodox Jews are praying so as to be disruptive. If that’s acceptable, why not allow them to do the same at historical Orthodox synagogues (of which there are dozens) as well?

Sadly, the orthodox rabbis have control of most of Israel. They even decide who can get married and who cannot in Israel. People who give to charities in Israel need to know that Jewish people who believe Jesus is the Messiah are not allowed to get access to that money as the orthodox rabbis also control that. Messianic believers are persecuted in Israel (still.) They are attacked by the ultra orthodox and persecuted by many (still.)
I don’t support what these people are doing but there are a lot of things that need to change in Israel, a country that is supposed to have a secular government. The ultra orthodox Jews do not have to serve in the military and they live off of tax money and charity as the say they must study all the time. Not a friendly group to the country either.

The shunning by traditional Jews of messianic Jews is not a new event. From the Jewish perspective, Jesus is merely one false messiah out of several. And like all such false messiahs, there were numerous followers, some of which continued to follow these pretenders long after their death. Shabbatai Tzvi is one the more well known examples of this occurring but there was also Jacob Frank, Bar Kochba, and others. Most recently, there was a movement among the Chabad Jews that the Rebbe, Menachem Schnerson (I may have misspelled that), was the Messiah and they continue to believe this even though he recently died. These Jews are also shunned to some degree or another.

From the traditional viewpoint, Messianic Jews aren’t following the Jewish religion.

Praying is not enough for these imbeciles, because prayer is not their intent (pretty obvious, huh?). Their intent is to make a name for themselves, and the Holy site is their conduit.

If I were an Israeli representative, I would pass a law making it legal for the women to do what they want, on the Palestinian side of Jerusalem. The basis for the law being freedom of choice and that Israeli religious laws do not apply on the Palestinian side. Then, the arrested could be transported to the Palestinian side, freed, and told they may pray as they wish there, or they can choose to pay a large fine and agree to cease and desist breaking Israeli religious law.

    Free to choose, no?

There are good reasons for religious strife. There should be religious strife. As long as spritual truth and false notions are contending for the human mind there will be religious strife. The worst times are when, in the absence of Christ, religious strife ceases. “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword” (Matthew 10:34).

I guess what you really mean is that everyone should just roll over and agree with everything you believe. Also, comparing anyone with an opinion to a radical Islamist is really a cowardly and unfair response. I’m not saying the following verse applies to you, but you might think about what Christ means here: “So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth” (Rev 3:16). Peace can be a good thing, but it is not universally good. Where ever there is peace it has been settled on someone’s terms. Spritual light and spiritual darkness have no terms on which to meet–Thank God! The peace I am looking for is one that is permanently settled on Christ’s terms alone. In order to do that, He will conquer His enemies and capture all enemy territory. I include myself among those who need to be thoroughly conquered. This world has been, is, and will be full of strife until Christ returns to rule with an iron rod.

Witness. I agree with you on the issue of strife when it comes to logical problems. Religion is illogical and not worth killing or dying for. It’s like going to war over fashion or one’s perception of beauty.

Liberals everywhere are trying to tear down standards in every area. People must fight back against this attack on morals and traditions.

That’s not correct. She wouldn’t pull this kind of stunt in Saudi Arabia. Leftist are only brave when they are assured that their “defiance” won’t be met with actual real consequences. Her smug look wouldn’t be visible in Saudi Arabia because if she went there you can bet your last dollar that she’d dutifully put on the burkah and stay quiet. Their arrogance is exceeded only by their cowardice.

Do I find this law/requirement reasonable? Nope, not even vaguely, it’s legally sanctioned sexism. That being said, she knows full well that Israel won’t have her put into the town square for a beheading, in fact, now she gets three meals a day and to be a martyr without any pain.

They must be so proud (ha) of themselves to be a disgrace among women of honor and integrity. I am not Jewish but I am one that are ashamed of the women and men who are trying to break up the religion, faithful and those all other who believe in something other then themselves.

Well it is clear that rabbinical law and sharia law have nothing in common. I mean its not like they are telling people how they must dress in public or where they are allowed to congregate legally. and the authors attempt to infer that these religious practices are not codified in Israel’s laws but rather was a court ruling is lame at best.

Would you approve if these women doing this at an Orthodox synagogue? These people come from a sect of Judaism that has previously, and may still, rejected the very idea of a rebuilding of the Temple. This movement once even tried moving the Sabbath to Sunday. And yet they want to have their views be the basis of everything.

@Jrook. It is about respect. There is a bases for traditions. We have them in Christianity. I have often asked what is a jew. God knows what is in the heart.

    Shame.
