‘F**k Off, German C**t’: Death Wishes and Hate Swirl on Social Media Following Pope Benedict’s Resignation Announcement
Editor’s Note: The following story includes offensive themes and language.

Pope Benedict XVI (Photo Credit: AP)
This morning, the world learned that Pope Benedict XVI will become the first head of the Catholic Church to resign in 600 years. The Vatican, citing illness, announced that he will leave his position on Feb. 28. While many have responded with prayer and favorable words for Benedict, others have taken to social media to show contempt and to hurl hate-filled insults. From death wishes to overt disrespect, the themes and messages are overwhelmingly troubling.
Among the more prominent individuals to make his voice heard on the matter was Frankie Boyle, a BBC star and comedian. He took to Twitter to joke that the pope is likely hell-bound, writing that Benedict will soon be laughing alongside Adolf Hitler.
.@pontifexDon’t worry, in a few months you’ll be laughing about this. With Hitler in Hell.
— Frankie Boyle (@frankieboyle) February 11, 2013
He followed this up with additional tweets, quipping about Benedict resigning after having sexual relations with a woman (obviously something he conjured up in an attempt to spawn laughter) and making other bizarre comments.
The Pope must have done something even the Church finds unacceptable. I’m guessing he’s shagged an adult woman.
— Frankie Boyle (@frankieboyle) February 11, 2013
There’ll be a resignation ceremony for the Pope, where he fires electrical rays from his fingers as Darth Vader throws him down a lift shaft
— Frankie Boyle (@frankieboyle) February 11, 2013
Boyle wasn’t alone, though, in spouting such commentary. Twitchy captured other instances of offensive messages emerging in the wake of the Vatican’s announcement. From wishing death upon Benedict to using offensive names and expletives to describe him, the statements coming from many Twitter users were especially vile.
Here’s a sampling:
Hey, @pontifex: why don’t you die like every guy before you.
— Jens Vanderbeke (@JenzlWashington) February 11, 2013
Fuck the pope and every practicing Chatholic.Evil people
— Anup the S’eair (@MatthuMiller) February 11, 2013
Hahahaha yes @pontifex, congrats on the retirement, now DIE
— Kieran Morris (@hipsterscumbag) February 11, 2013
So, Pope Benedict XVI @pontifex has resigned. Good fucking riddance, you hate-filled, homophobic, divisive, antediluvian little Nazi.
— Darren (@MetalOllie) February 11, 2013
#Pope Benedict XVI Resign you sick bastard!!
— Blackout Sappy #MTV (@BlackoutSappy) February 11, 2013
@pontifex is abdicating in 17 days – BEST. NEWS. EVER. You were an absolute disgrace, hating women, aids sufferers… Fuck off, German cunt.
— Jay (@jasmine_marien) February 11, 2013
Resignation via slitting your wrists in a bathtub please @pontifex.
— Morally Bankrupt(@snaisy) February 11, 2013
Some even created fake messages and pretended to re-tweet (share) them as though they were coming from the pope’s Twitter account (@Pontifex is his username). Here are some examples:
Steady on old boy. RT @pontifex: fuck you and fuck your shitty job!!!1!!
— Ben (@ben_postgate) February 11, 2013
RT @pontifex Fuck this, i’m done.
— Max Vedel (@SoGreeen) February 11, 2013
RT @pontifex: Fuck the lot of ya. Go to hell. Cunts.
— something in the way (@AllApologies_) February 11, 2013
So, there you go. And that’s only a sampling, as there’s sure to be more hate flying across social media in the wake of the announcement. It’s one thing to disagree with a religious system or the leaders that comprise it, but wishing death upon someone crosses moral boundaries, no?
What do you think about these responses? Let us know in the comments section.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 12:22pmI am not Catholic, but I’ve admired Benedict for most of his tenure. His trilogy on Christ, regardless of your philosophical view, is one of great strength and courage, as he continuously challenges his own convictions and beliefs throughout them, and many of his encyclicals. Benedict has endured taking the seat for the longest held Pope (and much adored) in history, assassination attacks, perpetual scrutiny from both in and outside The Vatican, and the nonsense of the self-righteousness of modernity.
We only need to take this vitriol with a grain of salt, as it won’t matter who the Pope is because of the church’s history, especially now with the child abuse cases. The left thinks there are no individuals, alas, no individual thought, or responsibility. They also transfer their world view on all their enemies as well, thus, Benedict is just as guilty with the child abuse cases as those whom were/are guilty. No different than America; no matter that we have a black POTUS, black Supreme Court Justice, black whoever, we’re always going to be racist country because of events long ago. When Billy Graham (bless his soul) passes, we’ll here the same thing.
A fallen world hates anyone who works hard in trying to be something other than fallen. A fallen world rejects redemption.
Bless Benedict for his time, knowledge, and grace. The community of faith will be a little weaker with his absence. The community of humanity, a little less bountiful.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 12:17pmPeter the Roman – This final Pope will likely be Satan, taking the form of a man named Peter who will gain a worldwide allegiance and adoration. He will be the final antichrist which prophecy students have long foretold. If it were possible, even the very elect would be deceived. The 112th prophesy states: “In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Petrus Romanus, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End.”

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 12:06pmI don’t like the Catholic Church much. I personally think Rome had hi-jacked Christianity…among other things.
Regardless of anyone’s point of view, their feelings should be honed to match God’s general attitude…even towards the worst of people, such as hypocrites, liars, & murderers.
No one should desire evil upon another.
I just want everyone to leave one another alone. I don’t like it when people die. I don’t like the thought of anyone going to Hell. To wish such a thing isn’t Godly.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 12:19pmRome has hijacked Christianity? Where do you get your information? The first pope was St. Peter. In the first century the converts to Christianity were already calling themselves Catholic. Catholic, meaning “universal.” The Universal Church teaching Christianity. Protestantism (protest) has only been around for 500 years. Ignorant is all I can say about you.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:24pmHoly freaking crap.
Rome had already installed King Herod & the Pharisees along with all the other major religious clergy of Judaism. THEY RANSACKED THE TEMPLE OF SOLOMON TOO!
So Jesus was crucified by the Romans through the fooled Jews.
Peter requested to be crucified upside down when he was killed by the Romans.
Christians were SLAUGHTERED IN AN ATTEMPTED GENOCIDE
Christians were tortured, forced to fight in the Colosseum , fed to lions
Rome was in the middle of a 4 way CIVIL WAR through it’s Empire
Christianity was the Religion of the Slaves
SUDDENLY CONSTANTINE DECIDES TO PUT THE CHRISTIAN SYMBOL (a P & an X) ON ALL HIS SOLDIERS SHIELDS.
CONSTANTINE THEN WINS THE WAR & DECLARES THE ROMAN RELIGION CHRISTIANITY & THE EMPIRE INTO A GOD-DAMN THEOCRACY!!!!!!
How the **** is forcing Christianity on everyone Christian?
HE SLAUGHTERED THE PAGANS AFTERWARD. THERE WAS NO FREEDOM OF RELIGION!
The Jews were oppressed ever since!
Even Major Protestants such as Calvin & Luther, called the Catholic Church, “THE ABOMINABLE CHURCH” & “THE WHORE”
Just shut the **** up about me being Ignorant you arrogant *****.
Go read history. There’s alot more I haven’t even mentioned!
ps: The Catholics forced every Christian to be Catholic & to abide by Doctorine that was decided upon at the Council of Nicea …. EVERYONE WAS FORCED. THERE WERE NO DIFFERENT SECTS OF CHRISTIANITY. THERE WAS ONLY CATHOLOCISM OR DEATH.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:49amDoes this now open the door for the anti-Pope…?
Is there not a prophecy concerning the next Pope?
Being the LAST Pope!
So quite possibly the expressions concerning his resigning
are right in line with this anti-Christ spiritual atmosphere
we see whipping up in a frenzy this year especially!
While their attitude is sad and deplorable, it is quite revealing…
It just might be far later than you think…..

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:46amSt Malachy lived in the 15th century and made many predictions which have come true. He also predicted how many popes there would be until the end of the papacy and the present pope is next to the last. The installation of the next (final) pope may be an unpleasant time and eye opener for many.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:39amIt is a sad day even though I left the Catholic church a long time ago I find to do what no Pope has done in 600 years takes great courage..Yes the Catholics seem to be the only ones praying for the thousands of babies aborted and all religions have skeletons in their closets..but the Anti-Christ in the WH HE whos Name can not be Mentioned is more evil than anyone i have encountered in my 60 years of life…these are hard times a coming and i intend to hunker down with my Large Print Bible and find comfort in the Lord.. his word..living a almost Amish simple lifestyle off the grid..those people who typed those foul tweets well they are lost to evil evermore

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 12:24pmThe Word of Truth can provide everything you need…Not only is it a comfort, it is a handbook on how to live life and how to operate in the toughest of situations…As in the days of old, God’s provision was written of for a purpose (to give voice & proof of divine provision) The Word is more than a feel good book! It is not a fanciful tale as some have alluded. It is a practical book of application, a way to live your life on so many levels you cannot quantify them all! You can go as deeply into it’s instruction as you choose to go…most wade around in the shallows, knowing very little but surface truths, feel good items to lift the heart…but if you get hungry after the things of God…seeking to learn more of Him, He will by His Holy Spirit reveal depths of truth, growing your faith, understanding & way of life…learning his great immutable laws written in love. Changes you forever. Revealing in your hEARt, Truth the mind cannot hold..a sustainable provision from heavenly sources on every level of need. If all you had was the Bible, it really would be all you need…for God will provide for you! That is no fanciful tale…it is application of His TRUTH in life!

These filthy, dirty creatures never cease to amaze me on just how bold there are. RE”Morally Bankrupt ” She outright says and apparently knows she is, and she is proud of it.
There is no question that the amount, intensity and proliferation over just the last 4 years has been remarkable and amazing. So much so it does fulfill Bible prophecy, Luke 17:26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man” We are in the last days!
Now there is only one more pope before Jesus’s return. How many people will wake up and realize this?

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:17amThe Pope has made a brave and difficult decision. He had decided that he has lost the physical and possibility mental limit of his ability to perform his duties. This is a difficult decision to make, and he has proven his ability to make it. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if many of our present leaders in our government had the same strength of character? To realize that they have gone beyond the limits of their abilities, and have the character to admit that and walk away. And I am not speaking of just one side of the political spectrum. There are both Republicans and Democrats that need to make that decision. These incompetent public servants are present from the bottom to the top of the political world. Sadly, they usually do not even know who they are, They tend to think that they are brighter, smarter, more capable that anyone else in the room.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:17amIf there are any believers in the Christian teachings left, I am way beyond just a ‘feeling’ that we are in the end times. It may not be a rain of fire and Jesus coming back, but possibly the end of religion and faith. We are at a time where there are more young people who have zero respect – and only ‘want’, than there are people with good values and ethics. Many will argue that “Social Media” is just a fun way to let loose and be someone you really aren’t. I tend to agree with those who have stated that the Internet was the opening of Pandoras Box. It’s beyond belief how a ‘blog site’ has destroyed marriage’s, families, and caused suicides. The joke about banning ‘porn’ will take away 90% of the Internet is nothing compared to the laser focused “hate” that comes out of the most polite people when they ‘change’ in to their social media personalities. It’s like the ‘freedom’ of saying what ever they want without concern is like some kind of chemical is released in the brain that makes them feel powerful. Just the user name of that one chick – “Morally Bankrupt” – that says it all in two words. And the shock is that she’s proud of it.
I did a school report back in the 70′s called “The Antichrist”. Classmates laughed when I predicted the Antichrist will come as a “large bank of super computers” that will cause society to destroy itself. There were no PC’s back then. I guess it was true.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:55amGee, interesting Icon for the comment, BT. Not that I don’t appreciate the view, but neither am I naive enough to think it likely to be actually you.
Having said that, when I read thinking like yours, I like to suggest a broader, more oblique, and sideways group of questions.
American Revolution v1.0, the Original, was greatly influenced by The Great Awakening which occurred some years before. Revival preceded Revolution.
Could it be that in the 21st Century, if The Republic they Created SOLELY to Secure our God Endowed Unalienable Individual Liberties is going to SURVIVE, that REVOLUTION must PRECEDE Revival this time?
Is it in any way or sense possible that we are being Tasked to “Cast down the High Places” and “put the prophets of Baal to the Sword”? If Matthew 25 tasks us with PROACTIVE deeds of Mercy, does Romans 13, given that in THIS Constitutional Republic THE INDIVIDUAL is SOVEREIGN and ALL GOVERNMENT exists SOLELY to SECURE INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS, does Romans 13 task The INDIVIDUAL CHRISTIAN in THIS Republic with PROACTIVE DEEDS of EXECUTING JUSTICE AND JUDGEMENT on EVILDOERS?
In the 70s I was key punching hundreds of cards to program a huge computer in the bowels of Burris Hall at VA tech, only to have the run stopped every time with “syntax error line 121.” Which meant NOTHING to me of course being in my FIRST computer class.
I was convinced the REAL programmers DID sacrifice virgins, or at least goats, to the Computer Gods.
