Is Increased Drone Use in America’s Future?

Concerns over the U.S. Military’s use of drone attacks in the War on Terrorism was a hot media topic last week, as a leaked Justice Department memo revealed broad authorization for the U.S. government to use drone strikes, including to kill any American citizen who are believed to be a “senior operational” leader of Al Qaeda or “an associated force.” The issue was also magnified as John O. Brennan, often described as a leader in the pro-drone wing of President Obama’s advisors, appeared before the Senate for hearings on his confirmation to be the next CIA Director.

In March of last year, Attorney General Eric Holder gave a speech generally outlining and endorsing the legal justification for the use of drones to kill Americans, saying they could be justified if government officials determine the target poses  “an imminent threat of violent attack.”  Shortly after the election last November a striking, yet quickly pushed under the rug, report came out that the Obama administration had hastily put together a “rules of engagement” manual for a potential Romney administration as they relate to the president’s extensive use of drones strikes in countries that harbor terrorists. On Tuesday former Secretary of Defense under both Bush and Obama, Robert Gates, said he would back lawmakers’ proposal to form a special court to review the president’s use of drone strikes against Americans linked to Al Qaeda.

While many are horrified by the destructive power of drones abroad, some in the U.S. think they could be an asset for law enforcement within our own borders. Reports have emerged that police plan to use spy drones to hunt for suspected Southern California cop-killer Christopher Dorner, and the FAA has released an updated drone authorization list that reveals 81 entities that have applied for permission to fly drones in U.S. airspace. These entities include government agencies, universities, and police and sheriff’s departments.

Andrew McCarthy is a former Assistant U.S. States Attorney and author of “Spring Fever: The Illusion of Islamic Democracy.” McCarthy joined ‘Wilkow!’ Monday to discuss the increased use of and call for drones at home and abroad.

Citizens should be pissed that Goverment and LEO’s want to use this against us. I think that they should stop raping the Constitution and start defending our rights as Americans.

@Quality…..it may not be my right to awaken you from your Utopian slumber but put down the Starbucks and understand that you are not in Kansas anymore.

“Muslim terrorism in 2012 was non existent in the usa.” Really. I live in a suburb outside of Boston……we had 2 cases last year. In my town a case was broken where a Muslim terrorist wanted to fly large, jet model planes into the White House and other locations in DC. He was recruting others and had a plan all laid out. You may have heard about that. All the time he was planning this the FBI and Homeland Security played along with him and he was stopped. In the town North of me a Muslim terrorist planed to detonate a bomb in the food court at the large mall near me and other targets around Boston. Both of these cases may or may not have made the major news but they none the less happened. You did hear about Fort Hood, a certain terrorist attack. The Shoe Bomber, the Car Bomber in NY. Like the 2 near me, all these were done by Muslims and were all Americans citizens. These are the targets for Drones in the future.

“We are losing who we are.” Maybe you’re lost but be certain that you are well protected to live your life just as it is. Others will do the heavy lifting for you so you can pretend that things don’t go bump in the night and the Boogieman is really not out there to do you harm you. Your rights are protected.

This is a clear indication that there are al Qaeda terrorist cells inside this country at this time about to do us all some harm. Why else would they put this info out there for all to know about? Do you really think it was “leaked”? They want our enemies to know as well and I for one would rather know drones will be up there than not know about it. In the future we will see drones in the sky from time to time be certain of that. They are NOT going to attack the general population because of gun control or any other perceived reasons anymore than when F-16 fighter jets were flying above us after 9/11. Where was your “fear” of being shot at when that happened? There was none at all back then and you were all happy to see F-16 fighters were up there watching from above……that is as long as you were not an “American” al Qaeda member.

Stop being paranoid. Your eyes are being taken off our real target, al Qaeda. Like they said to us at Gitmo, “You have watches, but we have time.” Well we have Drones too A-holes and your time is up ^
“We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail.” This is still OUR game plan!

Woody your opinion is saddening. Allowing the executive branch to kill whoever they want in a secret program is a recipe for disaster. Muslim terrorism in 2012 was non existent in the usa. The threat does not warrant this type of action. We qre losing who we are. Country is unrecognizable from the year 2000. Stop trusting faceless government officials with my life, its not your right.

Random Drones flying over the United States, with or without weapons capabilities are without question a violation of the 4th Amendment, and a wake up call to all citizens that the government of this nation is making an undeclared war upon its citizenry.
