Pope Benedict to Resign at the End of the Month — First to Do So in 600 Years

VATICAN CITY (TheBlaze/AP) — Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he would resign on Feb. 28 because he was simply too infirm to carry on – the first pontiff to do so in nearly 600 years. The decision sets the stage for a conclave to elect a new pope before the end of March.
The 85-year-old pope announced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals on Monday morning.
He emphasized that carrying out the duties of being pope – the leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics worldwide – requires “both strength of mind and body.”
“After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” he told the cardinals. “I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only by words and deeds but no less with prayer and suffering.
“However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of St. Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary – strengths which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.”
The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII, who stepped down in 1415 in a deal to end the Great Western Schism among competing papal claimants.
Benedict called his choice “a decision of great importance for the life of the church.”
The announcement did come as a surprise to many, including New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan. He was interviewed about it on the “Today” show and detailed his initial thoughts. He revealed that he wondered at first if it was just a rumor after getting a call from NBC’s Matt Lauer. That quickly gave way to confirmation:
“We did have fair warning, but at the same time since it is something that hasn’t happened in centuries, it always does comes as a surprise,” former Fox News reporter and Vatican spokesman Greg Burke told “Today.”
The move sets the stage for the Vatican to hold a conclave to elect a new pope by mid-March, since the traditional mourning time that would follow the death of a pope doesn’t have to be observed.
There are several papal contenders in the wings, but no obvious front-runner – the same situation when Benedict was elected pontiff in 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II.
When Benedict was elected pope at age 78 – already the oldest pope elected in nearly 300 years – he had been already planning to retire as the Vatican’s chief orthodoxy watchdog to spend his final years writing in the “peace and quiet” of his native Bavaria.
Contenders to be his successor include Cardinal Angelo Scola, archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, the archbishop of Vienna, and Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the Canadian head of the Vatican’s office for bishops.
Longshots include Dolan. But while Dolan is popular and backs the pope’s conservative line, the general thinking is that the Catholic Church doesn’t need a pope from a “superpower.” You can read TheBlaze’s detailed story on that from when Dolan was first named Cardinal here.
All cardinals under age 80 are allowed to vote in the conclave, the secret meeting held in the Sistine Chapel where cardinals cast ballots to elect a new pope. As per tradition, the ballots are burned after each voting round; black smoke that snakes out of the chimney means no pope has been chosen, while white smoke means a pope has been elected.
Popes are allowed to resign; church law specifies only that the resignation be “freely made and properly manifested.”
Only a handful have done so, however and there’s good reason why it hasn’t become commonplace: Might the existence of two popes – even when one has stepped down – lead to divisions and instability in the church? Might a new resignation precedent lead to pressures on future popes to quit at the slightest hint of infirmity?
Benedict himself raised the possibility of resigning if he were simply too old or sick to continue on in 2010, when he was interviewed for the book “Light of the World.”
“If a pope clearly realizes that he is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling the duties of his office, then he has a right, and under some circumstances, also an obligation to resign,” Benedict said.
The former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger had an intimate view as Pope John Paul II, with whom he had worked closely for nearly a quarter-century, suffered through the debilitating end of his papacy.
You can read the full text of the resignation announcement to the Cardinals below:
Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.
Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.
This is a breaking story. Updates will be added.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 12:51pmFor centuries, people mocked Christians because they believed the Bible when it said Israel would become a nation again, even though the Jews were dispersed around the world. After 2,000 years of no Israel, though, in 1948 Israel was born again in one day, just like the Bible said it would be. That fulfilled prophecy alone should give any unbeliever pause, because nothing like that has ever happened in history.
When speaking of the time before Jesus’ return, the Bible says men’s hearts will grow weak because of natural disasters that occur in the oceans. The fact that we’ve had two tsunamis of “Biblical” proportions (i.e., Indonesia and Japan) and several hurricanes of “Biblical” proportions (e.g., Katrina, Ike, etc.) in the past few years seem to be fulfillment of those prophecies. What about all of the earthquakes of “Biblical” proportions that have leveled cities in Turkey, Indonesia, New Zealand, etc.? The Bible says such things will also be signs. Actually, there are lots of prophecies that are being fulfilled right now, which seem to indicate we won’t have to wait long for the return of Jesus, but if people choose to mock, I guess that’s their prerogative. Ironically, such scoffing has also been prophesied in the Bible and is yet another sign that Jesus’ return is close at hand.

I have no desire to quarrel with you.
I desire that each man be allowed to worship who, when, where and how he may.
You are free to interpret the scriptures as you see fit.
You are free to berate others who don’t interpret it the same as you.
You are free to wander the world calling everyone to repentance and exposing false doctrine with an iron tongue.
As for me, I will love my neighbor. I will speak my beliefs with meekness, patience and long-suffering.
I will do good to all men.
I will respect another person’s use if their ability to choose, even if I disagree with their choice; I will not hinder them in their ability to choose.
I will try to ‘preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary, I will use words’.
I will try my best to follow the commandments of Jesus Christ, and I will try my best to be like Him.
I will invite others to come into Jesus…to be washed clean of the sins of the world and to endure to the end that they may be held spotless before the judgement bar on the last day.
I will continue to preach that the Grace of God, all men may be saved through the atonement of Jesus Christ.
If you believe me to be on the wrong path, so be it.

Your hatred for the truths I speak, is veiled by your opulent opinion of yourself.
Pride is our worst enemy.
And you have continued to chastise me for such infractions as quoting Joseph Smith and pointing out lies, hypocrisy and error. All the while elevating yourself to some imagined, morally higher position, due to your kindness towards others.
However, I perceive that your unwillingness to stand up for the truth is more of a flaw than an asset.
I realize you believe that when you walk down the street, honey drips from your mouth and roses grow behind you, and everyone simply loves you. But you are still following a false prophet with a false gospel who teaches a false Jesus and a false God, and I’m not “afraid” of offending you when I tell you that you are not a Christian for that reason. Not only for that reason, but also because the founders of your church insisted that Christians were pagans, and because they taught that you should believe that the Jesus Christ of historical and orthodox Christianity is the false one and anyone who follows Him is of the devil.
My motives and methods are not misguided, as you infer, because truth has no agenda.
Your “agenda,” on the other hand, seems inclined to ridicule Mormon detractors into silence.
Again, you engaged me, remember?.

Let me ask you this simple question: Are you a protestant? Because in the 1400s and 1500s Protestantism was hardly mainstream. And it was also called unchristian by many Christians of the time. Who are you to tell me that I am not a follower of Christ? I am not perfect but neither are you or anybody else.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 8:07pmJQP, I don’t know if Mormons are Christians, or not. To be honest, I’m not sure how low the bar is for being saved. After all, if you look at the thief on the cross, he merely admitted his own guilt, acknowledged the innocence of Jesus and then asked Jesus to remember him when he came into his kingdom, yet Jesus responded by saying, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).
Practically all of the Mormons I’ve ever talked to say they believe Jesus is the Son of God and that he died for their sins, which, to me, is what makes a Christian a Christian. Does it matter that Mormons have some weird beliefs about God once being a man and Jesus being created? I don’t know. It’s certainly not what I believe and some of their beliefs seem blasphemous, but I’m drawn back to the thief on the cross who didn’t know anything about Jesus other than he was the innocent Son of God who was being unjustly crucified and who had the power to grant him rest in the kingdom of Heaven. Regardless of how low the bar is, I do know one thing, which is our salvation is 100% dependent on what Christ did and 0% on our own works, so if you are a Mormon who believes Jesus died for your sins, keep in mind that your works play no role whatsoever in your salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 9:19amLTB, if miracle workers exist today, why don’t we know about them? Show me someone who can empty hospitals and morgues and I will believe you.
TITLE, I don’t “attack” Mormons for being “different” from mainstream Christianity, the Bible instructs me to point out error in the Church. A Mormon claiming to be a Christian is hypocritical if not deluded because your religion teaches doctrines that have nothing to do with orthodox Christianity. In fact Smith denounces Christianity as “of the devil.”
I don’t claim any “denomination. I believe in the Jesus Christ of the Bible and I follow His teachings as found in the Bible.
If you believe in the orthodox Christian Jesus Christ then you are not LDS. Jesus asked “who do you say that I am” Mk 8:29 and the answer will explain who you worship as your God. LDS teach such an extremely different God and Jesus, that the ones they worship fit the Biblical description of blasphemy and worshipping idols.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 10:07amtheotherberean, Just from reading your comment, it’s no mystery to me why you don’t see miracles in your own life. You don’t believe and are full of doubt, so no wonder you never experience any miracles (James 1:2-8). I’m guessing you’re a Calvinist, correct? I find Calvinists have a really difficult time with growing their faith. It’s like they get saved and say they believe the Bible 100%, but then they go around telling people that God doesn’t perform miracles anymore. I also find that Calvinists spend an inordinate amount of time rooting out “false converts.” Take this as loving advice: Spend more time cherishing your own salvation and less time worrying about whether other self-professing Christians are saved and I can almost guarantee that you’ll start seeing miracles in your own life.
As far as Mormons are concerned, like I said, I don’t know how low the bar is. Besides, I have enough sin in my own life to worry about without worrying if other people, who claim to be Christians, are actually saved. That being said, I do agree with JQP completely that anyone spreading the “gospel” of Mormonism should read Galatians 1:8-9, before they tell people that salvation = Jesus + works.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 12:05pmLTB, thanks for your concern, but I never said miracles don’t happen today, nor that I don’t see or expect miracles in my own life. However, I did say that I believe there are no “miracle workers” such as in Biblical times. Can anyone raise a dead person? And if they did I would think it was a Satanic deception for two reasons. 1. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect–if that were possible. Matt 24:24. 2. Miracles, signs and wonders were given for a specific reason – to substantiate the Gospel message. “But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” John 10:38
I disagree with the notion that Christians should sit on their hands and just be happy with their own salvation. 2 Tim 4:1 I command you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his Kingdom: 2preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching. 3For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts; 4and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside to fables. 5But you be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 12:11pmAlso, you admit you don’t know much about the Mormons, and most Christians don’t either. Mormons easily deceive Christians because they use the same words we use, but to describe entirely different things. They worship a false god, a false Jesus and follow a false gospel which came from a false prophet. They fairly well fit the description of all we are warned about in 1 and 2 Timothy. It is my duty as a Christian, to expose the LDS religion for the pagan mystery cult that it is.
Not only does the Bible tell me to speak out, President Joseph Fielding Smith, the tenth LDS prophet said:
Mormonism, as it is called, must stand or fall on the story of Joseph Smith. He was either a prophet of God, divinely called, properly appointed and commissioned, or he was one of the biggest frauds this world has ever seen. There is no middle ground. If Joseph Smith was a deceiver, who willfully attempted to mislead the people, then he should be exposed; his claims should be refuted, and his doctrines shown to be false, for the doctrines of an impostor cannot be made to harmonize in all particulars with divine truth. If his claims and declarations were built upon fraud and deceit, there would appear many errors and contradictions, which would be easy to detect (D. of S. Vol. 1, p. 188).
And they are. All one must do is know where to look.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 6:16pmtheotherberean, Miracle workers are nothing more than Christians who heal in the name of Jesus. If Jesus’ name had the power to heal people 2,000 years ago, his name still has the power to heal today. Sure there are charlatans who claim to heal in the name of Jesus, but I also believe there are people with enormous faith in the area of healing who can help Christians lacking faith in that area. When you have someone who is sick in your family, do you not pray for him to be healed? I hope you do and that’s the same thing the apostles did 2,000 years ago.
Also, I never said I just sit on my hands being happy with my own salvation, what I said is that you might see more miracles in your own life if you stopped concentrating on whether other people are saved and instead concentrated on how blessed you are to be saved. You Calvinists seem to spend more time accusing other people of being “false converts” than you do spreading the Gospel and it’s very off-putting. If there is someone in your church who is spreading a false “gospel,” then by all means, kick him out, but do you really think you lead more souls to Christ by telling people the true Gospel of Christ crucified, or by hanging around in discussion forums arguing with Mormons?

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 11:17amLTB, I believe a “miracle worker” is one who possesses and exhibits the very Authority of Christ to cast out demons, heal the sick and raise the dead. An instantaneously, miraculously, momentarily suspension of the laws of physics and nature. This is the type of miracle that Jesus, His Apostles and some 70 others could perform, at will. Do you know someone like that?
I never called anyone a “false convert.” False prophets, false Jesus, false god, false gospel perhaps, but not false converts.
And yes you are telling me to sit on my hands and leave everyone alone and stop sharing the Gospel. The problem is the Bible tells me the exact opposite. You can believe in the gospel of LTB if you like, I’ll take the one that’s in the Bible.

“…do you really think you lead more souls to Christ by telling people the true Gospel of Christ crucified, or by hanging around in discussion forums arguing with Mormons?”
I don’t think those two thoughts are mutually exclusive. Christians are to commanded to always and everywhere share the Gospel message and correct error in “the church.” When Mormons claim to be Christians, they are in “my church.” So are you if you claim to be a Christian, regardless of which denomination you claim or which discussion forum you choose to haunt.

According to Saint Malachy’s Prophecy of the Popes, the pope who comes after Benedict will be the last pope and is the pope who will be the false prophet described in “Revelation.” Although Malacy’s prophecy is not part of the Bible, his descriptions of popes up to this point have been undeniably accurate. When you consider Malachy’s prophecy, in conjunction with the multitude of prophecies in the Bible that are being fulfilled in this day and age, it’s amazing.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:49am@LBT… That came to mind as well. I don’t know if that guy was a true prophet or not; suffice it to say that many other events seem to indicate that we ARE in the “Last Days” and scoffers DO abound. Of course, I’m in good company in that feeling: Paul, Peter, and the 1st Century Church, Luther, … Do a word-search on “Ephraim,” “House of Joseph,” “House of Israel,” “Whole House of Israel”… consider the “two sticks” of EZ 37. There is a lot that needs to be fulfilled that I don’t know that the church realizes. I’m not so sure we can count on the Rapture to save us from it all; we may be players in the “Last Day” scenario. If the government ever wants to mark/chip my right hand or forehead, I don’t think I’ll allow it.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 12:01pmAs soon as I heard the news this morning I had to contact my folks right away. In the 12th century Saint Malachy gave a prophecy of 111 Popes and then the 112th Pope being the last one which leads into the book of Revelation. This news kind of made me nervous because Saint Malachy was correct on all of the 111 Popes – who they would be and/or where they’d come from. He said Benedict would be the last “good Pope.” Wow- the time has arrived! Are you ready?
See video below for more information on the final Pope

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 12:09pmIf the Rapture doesn’t happen pretty soon, the Lord has arranged private transportation for me. When I was younger the prospect of the Rapture was much more exciting to me than it is now. At this point, I would rather see another soul come to Christ before it happens. There is nothing else in this world that excites me other than the prospect of the Holy Spirit bringing individuals to the Salvation of the Lord. I really couldn’t care less what the Pope is doing, what Obama is doing or what people think they’re doing. As prophecies clearly come to fruition it will only mean that there is a more convincing reason to submit to Christ before the door of mercy is closed.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 12:18pmSageInWaiting, Irvin Baxter, whom I like a lot, doesn’t believe in a pre-tribulation rapture either. The reason I believe in a post tribulation rapture, is because not removing Christians before the tribulation would go against the nature of God and how he has handled similar situations in the past. For example: The last thing God did before bringing the flood upon the world was to close the door on the ark after Noah and his family were safe inside (Genesis 7:16); he didn’t destroy the cities of the plain until Lot and his family were safely outside of Sodom (Genesis 19:15-17); when the first born in Egypt were killed, all of the Israelites were kept safe from harm inside their homes (Exodus 11:7); we (i.e., Christians) are not appointed to God’s wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9); and, finally, I believe “once saved, always saved” (Isaiah 51:6, Romans 11:29), but if Christians are around during the tribulation they would be at risk of being damned to hell by taking the mark of the beast (Revelation 14:9-11). There are lots of other reasons I believe in a pre-tribulation rapture, but Irvin does make a good case for a post-tribulation rapture. I do hope you guys are wrong.

Well I’m glad I don’t have to wait long hahaha. I doubt the world will be here as I know it in 20 years either. I mean the world always changes quite a bit in 20 years…especially from a human perspective. Being that the earth is 4 billion years old and a human generation is truly here for an unnoticable period of time…to our minds eye a lot can change in 20 years. But I can pretty much gurantee, it won’t be the end because Jesus is coming back from outer space to call up the rest of his space zombies. I mean who would believe that?

When all you believe in is what your senses tell you and you don’t realize how fragile your life is and how easily it is beset by suffering for both you and those you love and you are not aware of just how short time is, then there is nothing for you but disappointment. If you continue on your present course, you will weep, and you will gnash your teeth. The real shame is that so will those whom you love. If you have a wife and children, you have been give a sacred duty to their souls as well as your own. What a wasted life, to have known the truth and so fully rejected it that you are overjoyed to take others with you into a pit of lies. If there is anything worthy of pity it is you. If there is anyone in need of mercy it is you. You are just a sensual roulette player who’s bet everything he has on black. You are like the prodigal who would rather fight with pigs over scraps than humble yourself and return to your father’s house so that you can feast at his banquet table. You’ve turned your back on the Fountain of Living Water so that you can suck what you can out of the sands of time. Your thirst will not be quenched. You are no threat to anyone who believes and what you consider clever will eventually destroy you. I truely hope for your sake and for those around you that God has mercy on your soul.

Exegesis = Making your beliefs fit scripture
Jesus gave Peter and Peter ALONE the Keys to HIS Kingdom.. Some try to equate Jesus Keys to the power to bind and loose but Jesus gave Peter both the Keys to His Kingdom AND the power to bind and loose so clearly both are not the same thing. Jesus also did not tell the other Apostles that He was building His church on them. Jesus also told Peter and Peter alone to STRENGTHEN the other Apostles after He was gone. Jesus also told Peter and Peter alone to FEED MY SHEEP (3 times) You see some people are so invested in rejecting the fact that Jesus chose Peter that they have no choice but to reject Jesus own words to Peter. The question then becomes, what exactly would Jesus have to say to Peter or Paul or any Apostle in order for someone to accept the fact that Jesus built His church on him, gave him the Keys to HIS Kingdom, gave him the authority to bind and loose and commissioned him to strengthen the other Apostles after He was gone? If Jesus were to tell YOU that He is building His church upon YOU and giving YOU the Keys to HIS Kingdom and giving YOU all of HIS authority to Bind and Loose and ordered YOU to strenghten His Apostles after He was gone, would you take that to mean that Jesus is telling you that you are insignificant and have no authority at all and Jesus expects nothing of you? Maybe so….

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 8:25amDon’t confuse the charism of papal “infallibility” with “impeccability.”. infallibility also belongs to the body of bishops as a whole, when, in doctrinal unity with the pope, they solemnly teach a doctrine as true. We have this from Jesus himself, who promised the apostles and their successors the bishops, the magisterium of the Church: “He who hears you hears me” (Luke 10:16), and “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven” (Matt. 18:18).

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 9:10amScripture shows that Peter’s authority was shared by the other apostles (Ephesians 2:19-20) and the “loosing and binding” authority attributed to him was likewise shared by the local churches, not just their church leaders (see Matthew 18:15-19; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; 2 Corinthians 13:10; Titus 2:15; 3:10-11). Thus, the foundation of papal infallibility—the existence of the papacy itself—is not scriptural.
2) Nowhere does Scripture state that, in order to keep the church from error, the authority of the apostles was passed on to those they ordained (the Roman Catholic Church teaching of “apostolic succession”). Apostolic succession is “read into” those verses that the Roman Catholic Church uses to support this doctrine (2 Timothy 2:2; 4:2-5; Titus 1:5; 2:1; 2:15; 1 Timothy 5:19-22). Paul does NOT call on believers in various churches to receive Titus, Timothy, and other church leaders based on their authority as bishops, but rather based upon their being fellow laborers with him (1 Corinthians 16:10; 16:16; 2 Corinthians 8:23). What Scripture DOES teach is that false teachings would arise even from among accepted church leaders and that Christians were to compare the teachings of these later church leaders with Scripture, which alone is cited in the Bible as infallible. Posted on February 11, 2013 at 9:48amWhile I am not an apologist I do know that the only time a pope is infallible is when he makes decisions from the Chair of Peter.. Keep in mind its not some chair he sits in literally, but in terms of Catholic teaching the pope can have his opinions, which faithful Catholics can disagree with, and he also has the authority to make decisions in regaurds to catholic teaching, that the faithful must be obedient to. I think most of the time it comes from councils ( council of Trent, council of Jeruselem, council of Nicea) The last one we had was Vatican Council 1 and 2. When they rule on such matters of their specific time. So to answer your question, no, he is not infallible once he leaves the Chair of Peter.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 9:50am@theotherberean = You are ignoring a “KEY” fact. Jesus gave Peter and Peter ALONE the KEYS to the Kingdom of Heaven
Isaiah 22:22 I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.
Matthew 16:19
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
The Old foreshadows the New and the New fulfills the Old. Jesus gave Peter and Peter ALONE the KEYS to the the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth.
In Luke 22:31-32 during the last supper a dispute arose among Apostles as to which of them was considered to be greatest and Jesus interrupted them and addressed Peter saying.
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you [plural] as wheat. But I have prayed for you [singular] Simon, that your [singular] faith may not fail. And when you [singular] have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
Jesus made this pronouncement in front of the other Apostles at the exact moment that all of them were disputing which of them was the greatest.
Jesus also told Peter “Feed My Sheep” 3 times.
If God Almighty were to look you in the eye and say “otherberean, I am giving YOU the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven” would you turn to Jesus and say “No Lord, everyone who reads scripture has your Keys” and If Jesus told you “Feed My Lambs” would you turn to Jesus and say “No Jesus, everyone

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 10:14am@theotherberean – Saul Saul, why do you persecute me……..
From the beginning God has appointed sinful men to lead His people (Moses, Abraham, King David, Paul and the other Apostles) and throughout salvation history there are those who have rejected the authority of these sinful men that God appointed to lead His people. For those of you in this forum who believe that God did not give Peter the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven and that the gates of hell did prevail against Jesus church I encourage you to read about Korah’s rebellion (Numbers 16:1-50) and take heed to what happened to Korah and those who questioned Moses authority and rebelled against him. They made the same argument that you are making today, that Moses was no greater or had no more authority than they did. Also Paul is VERY clear that we are to be obedient to those in the church who have AUTHORITY over us. (Hebrews 13:17) It is in our broken and sinful nature to reject authority and to convince ourselves that all that we have to do is read scripture and we can be in authority over ourselves and no one can tell us what to do but God gave Peter the keys not you. God has ALWAYS placed men in authority over his flock and Jesus gave Peter His Keys for a reason. You can choose to reject Jesus authority or submit to it in obedience. The choice is yours, there is still time to repent and put aside your pride and stop persecuting Jesus church.

When you are finished determining what I should and should not do, it might be beneficial to address my comments directly. It is a common tactic when faced with facts that you cannot refute to attack the person or the method that person uses to question you but doing so doesn’t really advance your posiiton it just makes you look petty and condescending. At the end of the day people can listen to you (and I think you will agree that you are fallible and the only assurance you have that your beliefs are true is your own fallible personal affirmation that you are right) or they can study the writings of those who lived with and learned from the Apostles and their successors (such as Polycarp, Ignatius. Iraneaus, Agustine etc) and see for themselves what they taught and believed. Otherwise, they are just taking the word of some guy on a blog who is defined more by what he denies and rejects than by what he affirms and who launches ad hominem attacks when faced with questions that he cannot answer. To be frank, my posts are not for your edification as you have already infallibly determined that you hold the fullness of the truth and anyone who disagrees with you is in error. Posted on February 11, 2013 at 8:08amThe beauty of the Catholic Faith to me is simply that it’s the SAME yesterday, today and tomorrow. It is the ROCK that Jesus asked Peter to build His Church upon. In a world where people run around hysterically trying to be ‘all things to all people’ the Catholic faith is rock solid. Yes, because there are sinful human beings (all of us as we were born into a world of sin) there will be incidents of sin…Satan roams around trying to discourage us, defeat us, make us doubt the very existence of GOD. If any one out there is experiencing this doubt, turn back to God and ask for His help. Satan loses of course but don’t let yourself become one of his victories!
When you go to any Catholic Church for the first time you will notice that all of the people come to worship, rich, poor, inbetween. All over the world the same lessons are taught that day. The service is the same world wide. Christ is present and the Alter becomes a tiny view of Heaven for those who have ears and eyes to see. It is not a place where personalities compete…it is the pure word of God. You will notice that people are not dressed like peacocks and/or looking around to see who else is there; you will come to understand that the Truth is spoken there. There is nothing about the Catholic Church that outsiders try to say: “we worship statues” etc. Go see for yourselves.

COMPLETELY fabricated by the church to try and “win over” the peasants of the day. This is just one of a dozen examples of “the church” trying to change its doctrine to win people over.
Again, I don’t have any problem with catholics, ALL faiths have good and bad people/doctrine…but let’s not pretend that the Catholic church has been some unmovable rock or something.

PATTY: I am under the impression that God alone is immutable. Here is the actual verse from Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” I’m sure it was an oversight, but your version substitutes “Catholic Faith” for Jesus Christ.
I’ll defend Jesus Christ all day long, but I wouldn’t have any part in defending ANY physical church. I’ve read quite a bit of what you’ve written in this forum and I agree with much of it, but I think if we knew each other the only place we would be able to have real fellowship is around Christ. “And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ (I Corinthians 10:4). When Jesus calls Peter by name, he uses the word Petros. When he references the Rock upon which He will build His church, He uses the word petra. Which if read in context seems to refer back to verses 15 and 16: “He saith unto them, ‘But whom say ye that I am?’ And Simon Peter answered and said, ‘Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God’” (Matthew 15-18). It is not on Simon Peter but on the Christ that Jesus says He will build His church–On Himself. Peter is more like shifting sand than a rock. We see him resisting Christ, like all we sinners do, even in Acts 10:14 after Pentacost.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 9:13amFor example just in the pope’s case. The RCC says the pope is infallible. Only Jesus is infallible. He is not the Holy Father as your religion calls him. God is the Holy Father. The pope is not the head of the Church. Jesus is. He calls himself the vicar here on earth. No no the Holy Spirit is.
You are practicing a pagan religion worshipping saints and statues. You pray to Mary and worship her. That is idolatry my friend. You are breaking the 1st and 2nd Commandment. Mary is not an intercessor to God. Only Jesus alone can do that. Your priest cannot forgive your sins. That is absurd. Why would you confess your sins to a priest? What if that priest was a pedophile? Do you think your sins are forgiven by a sinning priest? Why would you go to a priest for marriage counseling, the man has never been married.
You can not find a bible in a Catholic Church. Study your bible not some man made catechism. You are being duped. You have the wrong Jesus in that church. The pope is a joke. He is a sinner and needs to repent and trust in Jesus alone or he and the rest of his flock will be in the lake of fire at final judgement. It is not to late for you. Repent and trust in Jesus alone. Not in works or being good or infant baptism or indulgences and on and on.
By the way folks, if you even read the bible you would know Jesus referred James and John as the Sons of Thunder.

Christian means follower of Christ Jesus — Catholics are Christians and I am Roman Catholic and I have been crying over this because I am a former student of the Catholic Schools and the way the world is today I was praying for Papa to get well and stay as Papa. (Papa = Pope).
Peter was the first pope as Jesus said – “Upon this Rock, I shall build my Church.” And He told Simon Peter this — He would make him a fisher among men. I am a Christian, and will never deny Jesus! He is the way, the truth and the Light!

Mormons are not your “brothers in Christ,” unless the attributes of that “christ” are those of a man, a total and separate being from the Father, a “spirit child” — one of many, the physical offspring of the mating of a mother god and a father god. http://tinyurl.com/8o2uzzl http://tinyurl.com/9e4ec97
The Christian Jesus is the Only Begotten Son of the Father, who is Spirit and never was a man, by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary. The Christian Jesus said: John 10:30, “I and the Father are one.”
I consider Catholicism a pseudo-Christian cult. It wasn’t until 200 years after Christ’s death that they said oh yeah, by the way, we claim apostolic progression and authority. Unfortunately there are no miracles, signs and wonders to support such a claim.

I can only say one thing – a quote that I heard a Latter Day Saint say before a debate with someone of another denomination – “Don’t tell me what I believe, tell me what you believe.”
Unless you are a member of a faith, it is difficult to articulate their doctrine, because you lack their point of view.
If you are a former member, you have a chip on your shoulder.
Either way, your statements regarding their beliefs cannot be accurate, no matter how much you think you know about them.

All Christians are instructed to “remain in that which we have been taught” (meaning that which is in the Bible) and expose all other gospels as heresy. Since Mormons and Catholics like to include themselves in my church, and include extra Biblical teaching in their doctrines, it is my job to point out excursions into error..
What about the anti-Christian comments that come from LDS founders, prophets and apostles, (which curiously can only be found in 3 of your standard works?) Surely you’ve seen them also, since they routinely accompany the “many” of my comments that you claim to have seen. Why do you pick and choose which ones are anti Mormon and which ones are not? Most of my comments come directly from Mormon literature. It is your religions own worst enemy, when it comes to exposing the false teachings of Mormonism, if one knows where to look. They don’t make it easy for you to discover the truth though. How is posting references from these LDS sites, bashing Mormons? That “LDS point of view” which you say I lack, is not hindering me from discovering the truth about Mormonism, it is only a detriment to you because you refuse to look beyond the Mormon influence.

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:04amHumility is an attribute of the Savior.
I can admit that I do not know everything and that I may be wrong.
I believe that as we continue to seek, we shall find.
I believe that not all members of my church (or any church) are all at the same level of understanding – we are all learning.
I do not chastise someone who does not have the same level of understanding I have for their ignorance, I allow them to learn. Nor would I appreciate being chastised by someone who has a higher level of understanding than me.
Eventually, if you dig deep enough, you get to a point where an adherent – especially a founder – has to say: “We are right, you are wrong”, but civility requires us to acknowledge the divisiveness of such a statement and we should do our best to avoid contention.
The Holy Ghost will testify of the truthfulness of our testimony, that should be our goal; to speak the truth in order that the Spirit may testify to its validity.
This is not done by demeaning another – that is the spirit of contention, which comes from the adversary.
I realize that many of our doctrines are different than other denominations and, yes, that is because we believe the philosophies of man have crept into the church, but I don’t go to people of other denominations and say, “God thinks your church is an abomination.”
Jesus allowed people to NOT follow him, and I try to emulate him.
My salvation is not dependent on your belief, nor is yours dependent on mine.

Furthermore, to quote Joseph Smith when he said Heavenly Father and Jesus told him not to join any churches; that they were all an abomination to Him is disingenuous, he was simply relating the account of his first vision.
Any other leaders quotes (of which there are many to that effect) are either direct answers to direct questions, or they are taken out if context, or they are intended for the ears of the members of the church.
I’m sure we can find many quotes from leaders of many modern churches that are similar when asked why I should join their particular church instead of the church down the road – few churches would say, when pushed, that any church you go to us ok. They all think their way is best – you included!

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 11:25amED, Jesus had no problem chastising the Pharisees, using words like whitewashed tombs and vipers, devouring widows, when they were in error. He spoke the truth, sometimes with a sarcastic and even a demeaning tone, and it is His Words that I use to separate truth from the lies and traditions of men. I use Mormon literature to expose the heresy taught by the LDS.
Since the Bible says all men are liars, perhaps you should do the same. Just being a nice guy and sucking up to those in error, being careful not to offend, certainly won’t assure your salvation, nor do anything to help those you are attempting to correct, to gain theirs if you only coddle them they feel comfy in their error.. LENKIA, the RCC is not the first Church, the Church that Jesus started is the first church. The RCC never came into existence until the 3rd century. And I never said you are not a true follower of Christ. I said the Roman Catholic Religion is a pseudo-Christian cult, based upon the fact that it places its own traditions (of men) over the Word of God.
ED where does the Bible say we are to avoid contention at all cost, when it comes to pointing out heresy?
How can an argument designed to expose Joseph Smith as a heretic, possibly be disingenuous by quoting Joseph Smith? That notion is astounding, if not laughable.
Mormon doctrines are a direct attack on Christianity, because you use the same words to describe entirely different things, and use the familiarity of those words to deceive people into believing Mormonism is a Christian religion, founded on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Nothing could be further from the truth, and if you find that revelation offensive, you are either misinformed or not being intellectually honest with yourself.
You can’t find a church (other than the CJCLDS) calling itself Christian, that insists that God is not Spirit but instead was once a man as we are, or that the true Jesus Christ is really someone other than who the Bible speaks of, but shares that same name.

“Though the church has never really officially acknowledged the prophecy of St. Malachy, (well, he’s still a Saint after all) it’s amazing how close it’s been followed.”
Not really. Say you have a prophecy already, and you’re in charge of selecting the next pope. All you need to do is look at the prophecy and line it up with some criteria of the next pope. That’s why Malachy’s prophecy is so silly. It’s like saying “The next pope’s line is about apples! And OH MY GOODNESS! We picked a crest that has an apple on it! The prophecy is fulfilled AGAIN!”
Not to mention the lines have been interpreted incredibly broadly to “align” with the popes; they’ve referred to birth places, things that happen during the papacy, papal symbols, etc.
It’s even easier if you’re looking at past popes (and are the one writing the prophecy). You already know who they all are, and some details of their lives. So just write the lines to include those details. Voila! Prophecy! And this is exactly how it was believed to have been created in the first place in the late 16th century.
The prophecy of Malachy is convincing in the same way that a card trick is convincing – if you never bother to look closely it’s easy to be amazed. As soon as you learn how it work, the magic is lost.

And when he comes, he must continue a short time. The beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition. (Revelation 17:9-11 NKJV)

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 9:39amTheDoors: “There is just as much proof that what I am writing this very second is the inspired word of god as there is for the bible being so…” If you want to have some credibility, quit making baseless, shallow arguments. I suppose you have multiple manuscripts thousands of years old that have been tirelessly compared with one another and analyzed by scholars who have spent their lives reading the scriptures in the original languages. Is that the kind of support you have for that drivel you posted? Or is there still fecal matter clinging to it from whence you pulled it?

Posted on February 11, 2013 at 10:49amDoors: If one dedicates himself to study the scriptures, the internal consistency becomes obvious. There is historical support for the veracity of the scriptures. There were hundreds of people who saw and testified to the life of Chirst. Every Apostle was dramatically changed at Pentacost when they received the Holy Spirit. The prophets themselves testify that the Word is inspired. Scripture claims to be inspired and that is a theme consistent throughout. The fulfillment of the prophecies concerning Christ’s first advent should be enough to convice most people. But I doubt if you could be convinced by any kind of evidence. What do you gain from your attempt to spread your poison? I doubt anyone here takes you seriously. Since your thoughts are so small and immature regarding Christianity and the Scripture, why don’t you find another interest?

What I am saying right now is the word of god, if you doubt it, just read again because I am telling you this is true. Oh and my buddy right here agrees and sees it too…”yep this is the word of god”. See? My goal? For people to stop believing in things that hurt themselves and other people because they believe The Lord of The Rings is reality. Beliefs matter.

What is your standard of truth? Yourself.
What is your standard of reason? Yourself
What is your standard of reality? Your own!
And if you really have read the Bible, even once, you know that all of those things you mentioned are not Christian beliefs.
Delusion? Yes. Obviously there is much.
