The 55th Annual Grammy Awards aired on Sunday, providing viewers with a lens into performances and acceptance speeches from the world’s most popular musical acts. While mainstream artists were in attendance and given prime attention during the show, Christian, gospel, jazz and other “alternative” performers weren’t, as they are not typically included in the main program.
Instead, a separate pre-telecast was held and the awards given to these acts’ were announced during it (this pre-event was broadcast live on the Grammy web site). But, in case you missed the faith-based acts who walked away with accolades, TheBlaze has put together a brief recap.
As the Examiner notes, singer Matt Redman walked away with two Grammys — one for Best Gospel/Contemporary Music Performance and the other for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song. Both awards were for his popular tune, “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord).” Listen to a past performance of the song, below:
As for Redman’s latter award, he ended up tying with Israel Houghton, who also took to the stage to accept the Grammy for his song, “Your Presence Is Heaven.” Hear Houghton’s song, below:
The tie is something that isn’t too common at the awards show. In fact, these two artists were the only two to share a Grammy win during the 2013 festivities. Watch the surprise moment when both artists were announced, below:
And that’s not all on the gospel front. Christian rap artist Lecrae won Best Gospel Album for “Gravity” and popular artist Toby Mac was awarded Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for his project “Eye On It.” Mary Mary, a duo that has been a staple in gospel music for well over a decade, also won for Best Gospel Song for the tune “Go Get It.”
Watch Erica Campbell (one of the members of Mary Mary) and her husband, Warryn, accept this latter award, below:
The pre-telecast was held at Nokia Theatre L.A. on Sunday before the Grammy Awards’ main stage event unfolded at the Staples Center.
