On Monday night, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” where he defended the U.S. government’s use of drones and answered David Letterman’s questions about gun control. During the exchange, O’Reilly called for gun crimes to be “federalized” while also laying out a proposal on gun registration.
Other subjects that the two men covered included the film “Zero Dark Thirty” and the new Esquire article that documents the purported life struggles of the Navy SEAL who killed Osama bin Laden.
But while the appearance covered a variety of topics, O’Reilly’s proposal for guns were some of the most interesting. Here’s a transcript of his comments:
“Here’s what you do with guns…you federalize all gun crimes, number one. You take it out of the local jurisdiction and state and you federalize it, right? So therefore if you’re caught in a gun crime holding up a 7-11, you get a mandatory 10 years if you’re convicted in a federal pen, on top of whatever Slurpee you stole.” [...]
The second thing you do is, if you buy a gun, you have to register the gun — just like you have to register your car, alright. Now, people say ‘Oh, slippery slope, they’re gonna come–. Hey, this makes it easier for the government to take a thug who has a gun that’s not registered and put him in jail for 10 years.”
Later in the interview, Letterman expressed some confusion surrounding the difference between automatic and semi-automatic weapons. After the host asked why people need automatic guns, O’Reilly corrected him, noting that these firearms are illegal (although he didn’t get into the nuance of acquiring permits for them).
“What about the … automatic weapons. I still don’t understand the need for an automatic weapon,” Letterman said. “I’m not against guns, but I don’t get the automatic weapons.”
O’Reilly tackled by trying to explain the difference between automatic and semi-automatic weapons.

Feb. 12, 2013 at 12:43pmA rediculous argument by Bill. What makes anyone think the Federal Government will enforce the 10 year penalty? They are suppose to be enforcing the border and illegal immigration too but they simply choose not to. Our prison system is already overcrowded and costs continue to go up which is one of the reasons we don’t simply toss illegals in prisons. It’s a no harm no foul rule. Gotta commit a bigger crime. No the government needs help from the states and its people on this. The discussion on gun control are so far away from the heart of the problem that I have no confidence that crime will be reduced which is the end goal or at least it should be.

Feb. 12, 2013 at 12:39pmAt one time, I recorded oreilly so I could watch him. Now, I watch Glenn Beck instead. Oreilly can kiss my arse if I will register my weapon. I’ve read many of the books he has co-written, and they are getting worse with each one. Probably won’t buy the next one.

Feb. 12, 2013 at 12:33pmBill is a loon. He has way too many loons on his show, as if he thinks alinsky radicals deserve some kind of ‘equal’ time. They do not. They get their time all day long out in the lamestream. What’s wrong with bill? Who needs to hear them arguing off their teleprompter, the same old thing time after time, only to cutoff anyone else’s ‘equal time.
the ‘o’reilly factor’ is much better with Bolling, or any number of guest hosts. Give the spot to Megan Kelly. Sheppard Smith and then O’reilly in 2 consecutive hours is a bore.

Feb. 12, 2013 at 12:30pmOld billie boy started drinking the koolaid some time ago and so he just confirmed there was a good reason to no longer watch him. This is the reason why it is really frightening about what is happening to our country – when we see people like him that at least seemed to have some brains, some common sense and some dedication to this country and our rights and then we see he is basically in bed with him. AND we think this can be turned around? Better pull your heads out of the sand and see what is happening to our country. Everything is upside down and inside out and getting worse everyday and things that never made any sense at all are now the norm!!!

Feb. 12, 2013 at 12:29pmBil O is completely on the wrong side on an issue concerning gun registration. He appears to admit the only reason for the registration is to put people in jail. A gun and a car are not the same. Driving on a public road is a privilege, firearm ownership is a right. You do not register a car unless it is being driven on a public road. You want to carry a weapon concealed that is a different story. So normal law abiding citizens will be locked up for 10 years for a paperwork crime? There is no reason for a gun registration for law abiding citizens other than to know where the guns are when they want to take them.

Feb. 12, 2013 at 12:28pmMr. O,
You’re failing to uphold the principles of Lincoln. Stay away from our Inalienable Rights and the Declaration of Independence which Lincoln held near to his heart and soul, as do many Americans in present day. The federal government was never intended to be a part of our daily lives, nor write legislation to control them. You might want to remove your foot from the Bill of Rights, registration and taxation is considered infringement.

But that would be redundant.
FOX is right next to The Blaze TV, not in alphabetical order.

Feb. 12, 2013 at 12:26pmI have a suggestion I would like to toss out to you guys. How about a background check that allows you to put a note on your drivers license that you are ELIGIBLE to own a guy. No registration at all , and all you do is show it at a gun store and buy what you want. No one knows if you have a gun or how many. Let me know how I am missing something if this will not work.

What does a NYC turd wrapped in flesh understand about the Mid West or anyone that has never bought a $7 cup of coffee? The 2nd Amendment isnt about hunting and sport, its about freedom from fear and i fear morons and stupidity more than i fear crime.

Bill is all about Bill. Always was. He is not right wing…he if popular wing. He will change stances as long as he can sell another case of t-shirts.
If guns were a privilege, like driving a car is, then go ahead and register them. But gun ownership is a right. You don’t need to register for a right. Nobody is registering for free-speech, or freedom of association.
What a tool.

Feb. 12, 2013 at 12:21pmThe problem is sentencing/judges; immediately after Sandy Hook we had two instances here of gun violence; one person (with a history of troubles) got the minimum sentence, the other got probation. And ‘plea bargaining down,’ drops the penalties before they even enter the courtroom! How about we shelve the gun-specific hysteria; getting KNOWN, IDENTIFIABLE violent anti-social psychopaths off the streets would make streets safer for all, and–incidentally for you liberals who feign such humanitarian concern–probably extend the lifespan of these adrenaline junkies.

Feb. 12, 2013 at 12:21pmThis is really no surprise coming from a semi-closeted liberal like O’Reilly. And, more broadly, Fox News is increasingly supportive of obama’s gun-control / gun-confiscation push, and many of obama’s, liberals’ and “progressive” Republicans’ destructive policies. Just days ago, Roger Ailes declared that he is pro-amnesty (for illegals) and that he would use Fox News to push the Rubio / obama amnesty plan. Ailes even went so far as to criticize the use of the terms “illegal” and “illegal immigration”. Fox News is quickly becoming a typical main-stream propaganda outlet.

Feb. 12, 2013 at 12:16pmMr. O’Reilly has it all wrong.
I agree, that the sentencing of crimes with guns should have a mandatory sentence. I don’t agree with him on making them “Federalized” crimes.
The problem is not with the laws, it is with the enforcement or should I say LACK of enforcement of the laws by Federal Prosecutors and the Judges not sentencing longer jail times to those committing crimes with guns .
The Federal Prosecutor for the district that covers Chicago has REFUSED to prosecute those arrested for crimes in which a gun was used. As a result, no punishment for the crime equals no reduction in the rate of gun violence in Chicago.
Americans should never allow for the registration of any weapons…..NEVER…
Just saying…

What are they going to do then? We outnumber them a good 80:1 in firepower, and even if they brought the entire Chinese military over to help, we’d still outnumber them 50:1 in firepower.
I say, we don’t register, we don’t comply, and we tell them to kiss our liberty loving @ss. You in?

What I meant by next is 5-10 years down the road when they say “you already registered in ’13, no just let us hold them for you…you can still check them out to hunt.” Take care.
